Money for Nothin' was from the album Brothers In Arms released in '85. The lead singer, Mark Knopfler cowrote this with Sting. It's about the perspective of 2 men working at an appliance store and complaining about the easy money MTV stars were making..great lyrics. Great production. MTV was 24/7 back then, it was huge. Loved your reaction. Good song to get people's mind off today's wacky election process. Good jam!! Dad gets 3 Kit Kat bars!❤❤❤😎
On the point. Rumour is that they were watching a Mötley Crüe video while Mark was watching them. They're pretty much quoting them verbatim, like that "That little faggot with the ear ring and the make up" - that's taken word for word from them. And because people didn't understand that they got stick for it and changed it to "that little fragger" in later versions
@@saschaschneider6355 At the time, everyone I knew assumed that was about Boy George, but that'd be a little on the nose. It makes more sense that it'd be a glam/hair metal video. Sting only got a cowriting credit because Mark wanted to use his tune from The Police hit Don't Stand So Close to Me for 'I want my, I want my, I want my MTV'. Everything else is pure Knopfler. :) Dire Straits were recording their Brothers in Arms album on the island of Montserrat and Mark commented that it would be a nice idea to get Sting to sing that line, only for someone to tell him Sting was vacationing on the island! Mark invited him over and the rest is history.

Finger-picking guitar wizard Mark Knopfler.. I could listen to him play for days on end. BTW. the "I want my MTV" in the beginning was part of a MTV campaign in '82 although the song itself is from '85. As others have said, this is from the perspective of two blue collar workers Mark Knopfler had watched in a department store and he's quoting them verbatim - rumours are that they were watching a Mötley Crüe video, hence "Yeah, buddy, that's his own hair". Dire Straits are one of my favourite bands, and it's one of the bands that I listen to when I'm down. It's such a feel-good music and they always make me feel better. Dire Straits (and especially Mark Knopfler) are magic. edit: recommendations for songs: Brothers In Arms, of course! Just a warning, it's a very slow song for most of its runtime and you need to allow yourself to immerse into it. Another good one would be Romeo and Juliet. And: Your Latest Trick. The Sax on it is just fantastic. Your Latest Trick and Brothers in Arms are from the same album as Money For Nothing and you could take any song from it, every single one of the is absolutely great - maybe react to the whole album, you wouldn't regret it. So many amazing songs, like The Man's Too Strong, Walk of Life, So Far Away and Why Worry. I need to stop or I'm going to list every single track here ;)
Just in case somebody's interested, that guitar sound is a Les Paul through a Cry Baby at about half-cock. IDK what amps he used back then but I saw him get that same sound through a Soldano...
Money for Nothing's music video was the first to play on MTV Europe (The Buggles, Video Killed the Radio Star's music video was the first to play on MTV)
Watch the MTV video on yt. The song is about these guys who are doing actual physical work (moving refrigerators, etc.) and they see people on MTV playing music, making millions. They're literally mocking the system, saying how insane it is that people who work hard 'for a living' don't actually get that much of a living (they basically live paycheck to paycheck), while these guys who aren't working are making millions. "That ain't working. That's the way you do it. Money for nothing." But in a way they're also laughing, since they're literally those guys who are making a living 'not working'. I think this is partly why the song became a huge hit, because people kinda related to it in quite a literal sense.
@@fatherandsonreactions You're welcome. Nice to see you on Daniel's channel too. Daniel says he's going to be reacting to the U.K. song 'In the Dead of Night' I told you about. He reacted to it a few months ago, but only part 1. I forgot to tell him it's a 3 part Suite : )
I seem to be in the minority because I always saw the song as people watching MTV thinking it was so easy to be a rock star but clearly if it was so easy we'd all be playing guitars and making lots of money doing it.
@@myst0dreamer you're right in one sense. However, it IS easy to learn how to play, but it's almost impossible to make it in the music business. Of the millions that try, only thousands make it, and only hundreds make it big. Of all the amazing singers you've seen on American Idol and AGT and The Voice and many other shows, how many of those people do you know by name, yet thousands of them are amazing singers, but only a few have a ton of success. Most only perform locally. The reasons we're not all playing guitars and making lots of money is simply because there isn't enough room in the market for that many to succeed in huge ways, but anyone can play locally, if you practice enough. Anyone.
Have always loved this song. This IS the song that makes me think MTv. Did you guys know the singer at the beginning singing "I want my MTv." is Sting of the police. Great reaction fellas
Great pick again 🙂 ....this got a Grammy Award in 1986 as well as the music video in Music Video Awards... you might want check out on their "Walk of Life" and "Once upon a Time in the West"...👍
It's probably one of their most famous tracks but it got played to death at the time when it came out in the 80s but they do have equally good ones that are worth checking out - Once Upon A Time In The West, from Sultans of Swing era, Romeo And Juliet, Tunnel Of Love and their 14 minute epic Telegraph Road. Brothers In Arms is arguably their true masterpiece - written at the time of the Falkland war when British soldiers went thousands of miles to defend the islands and it deals with experiences and comradeship in battle.
@@fatherandsonreactions I think you will enjoy them when you get to listen to them. They are a great solid rock band and Mark Knoplfer is one the guitar greats. The war time motif is rather underwritten - ("these mist covered mountains"), increasingly marked by destruction ("these fields of destruction - Baptisms of fire") and death ("Now the sun's gone to hell - And the moon's riding high - Let me bid you farewell - Every man has to die"), suggesting the insanity of war: "We're fools to make war - On our brothers in arms."
I think the point of the song is that the “average man” doesn’t realise how much work is involved in being a professional musician. They assume it’s easy, but they won’t make any effort to actually become good enough to make it a reality for themselves. They have to move refrigerators and furniture, and see that as hard work. Not saying it isn’t hard work, but they have no conception of how hard it is to be a famous musician.
Nice reaction to a fun song. A lot of different vibes when you listen to Dire Straits. Even on the same album are songs like Brothers in Arms, Your latest trick or Walk of Life, which all have a different vibe. I think if Son hasn't heard the Police, that needs to be fixed. I'll go left field and say to start with one of their last (and best) songs, Synchronicity 2. It was partially recorded at LeStudio in Quebec, which is where Rush recorded many great albums. The Police were also a huge influence on late-70s/early-80s Rush. You hear it most obviously in the song "Digital Man", but there's bits all over Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, and Signals.

If you want to hear Dire Straits set a really moody vibe, give 'Private Investigations' a listen. Failing that, give their magnum opus 'Telegraph Road' a go.
It's a good song. Somehow Dire Straits never been something I would put on and listen to on purpose, but I wouldn't change the channel on the radio if their song came on. I don't know why it is so, because it's nothing wrong with it, it's pretty good. Maybe time to get my hands on their best of album and listen to it.
Imagine trying to decide back in the day whether to buy a color or back and white tv. It won’t be long before kids have no idea what it was like to go to a big box store to get a stereo, fridge, tv or microwave....
Even in the early 80s, B&W TVs were on the way out here in the USA; most of what you could still buy in B&W was smaller portables, as I recall, rather than big heavy consoles that movers would have to carry around. :-) They *were* still a thing over in the UK, though, because your annual "TV tax" was cheaper for B&W sets than for color (sorry, "colour") sets back then, so some households still bought larger B&W sets since they didn't want to pay the higher tax on colour sets. (Yes, in the UK, they actually charge you an annual tax for each TV set in your household. The tax funds the BBC. )
Well kid, you probably should consider making me your agent, cuz this is not the one I would have started off with. That said, it's a classic eighties tune no doubt, and for a bit of rare trivia, this was Mark Knopfler's attempt to sound like Billy Gibbons of ZZ top. Do yourself a favor and do a reaction to Sultans of Swing, the live version would be best. With that, you will get the proper opportunity to experience Knopfler's unique guitar style. Keep On rocking boys!🤘 Ps, tell your pops that I'm definitely going to try that Kit Kat plus three musketeers combo!

Amazing song, production, feature and genius riff. It's interesting to note how bad the lyrics age. I get that any song reliant on mentioning the tech of the time will age like milk but color tv, movies and microwaves arent nearly as impressive anymore.
@@fatherandsonreactions Supper's Ready is considered by many to be one of their best and this live version is quite theatrical - th-cam.com/video/K04HYw25zdY/w-d-xo.html It's long at 23 mins but it doesn't ever get boring. Can't find anything live that doesn't have the thing in the description saying it's owned by EMI. The channel Just JP has been uploading loads of their stuff so perhaps it's just that it can't be monetised? Worth a look any way mate, the album Selling England by the Pound is one of the very best in rock history.
Eh, I gotta say I wasn't really into this one. The music was pretty good, but I thought it was much better in the beginning and end of the song when it was a little more experimental. But everything in between felt a little too basic and middling to me. Wasn't bad, but didn't really grab my ears making me want to check out more. The drum and guitar didn't really offer much to me, in that there wasn't much variation to me, and the vocals weren't too impressive to me (not bad, though). But if you guys have more reactions from them, I'm still willing to check out more! There you go, Ethan. If you got candy, have to protect the Halloween stash at all costs! (though as you said, it's been about a week at this point, so yeah guess it's all gone now. lol). But Sting? Okay, interesting. Wasn't a huge Sting fan, but I know that's sacrilegious to some. Haha. You don't like Milky Ways? /GASP!/ I mean, when I was a kid the caramel got in the way of the chocolate, but now I love it almost as much as 3 musketeers. Haha. Ah, so that's what the song is about. Yeah, I guess that's a good trade-off instead of money. Haha.
Hey Brian! Glad to see you commenting even if you might not have enjoyed the song that much. And Yes! Someone gets me!! The caramel gets in the way of the chocolate! Maybe it has to grow on me, just like some of the songs we’ve done on the channel! -S
@@fatherandsonreactions Haha! Yes! Caramel was very annoying to deal with to me, and I didn't agree completely with the flavor. But yeah, I eventually did grow to love the caramel flavor mixed with the chocolate. The sweet, light flavor now feels more complimentary and pleasant, even the variation of the texture I think adds something different. I will say though... if you ever have a chance to try Caramel hot chocolate... preeeeetty worth it imo. :P (Love hot chocolate. I tried a decent amount of flavors, too. Peppermint hot chocolate. Gingerbread hot chocolate. White chocolate mixed in with it. Vanilla hot chocolate. Many kinds. Lol Caramel hot chocolate is nice, though.)
@@fatherandsonreactions Pro tip: if you're at a place that makes hot chocolate, and want to try different flavors, ask what syrups they have to add to the hot chocolate. They're not pancake syrup. These are syrup flavors that people add into coffee and such to bring out a specific flavor. Pumpkin spice, for example, is a syrup flavor that is typically the rage for the Autumn season for coffee lovers. But those syrups can be added to hot chocolates... you got to ask for what they have though, and if they can add a flavor in. ;) (Like cinnamon flavored syrup, for cinnamon hot chocolate! Agh! Another favorite! The options! Lol)
@@fatherandsonreactions Haha yeeep. I love trying new flavors of food and drinks (and as I said, love hot chocolates), so when I saw different syrup flavors... the world of hot chocolate flavors opened up. Lol (and have had zero regrets since. 😆)

Here is Nocturnal Rites - The Sinner's Cross (th-cam.com/video/sli0sh7YMdc/w-d-xo.html). I was just listening to this album in my car yesterday with it just cranked...great album! Cheers!
Thanks for always leaving great comments Mike! -S
If you want to hear Dire Straits set a really moody vibe, give 'Private Investigations' a listen. Failing that, give their magnum opus 'Telegraph Road' a go.
Mark Knopfler inspired by a man in a Stereo shop. watching an Elton John video!;
I know you guys have seen Sultans of Swing, but did you do the live Alchemy?
If not, do us all a favour and check it out.
We haven’t! Thank you ! -S
You just summed up my relationship with Dire Straits’ music. I really enjoy them however they’re only on my radar when I happen upon them.
Planet of New Orleans is a great song from the album On every Street cheers
Thanks Mark! Cheers! -S
You're very welcome. If you like money for nothing you will like Heavy Fuel from the same album. Cheers. All the best. Love your channel
Keep On rocking boys!🤘
Ps, tell your pops that I'm definitely going to try that Kit Kat plus three musketeers combo!
Hey Doug, Ethan already knows sultans of swing , so when there is a song we both know we will not react to it. We would absolutely do the live version though, so we will put that on the future list. Great song and I would think it would be so cool to watch live. Thanks so much for commenting and being a part of our channel. Absolutely try the Kit Kat 3 musketeers mix. It’s outta control ! I shouldn’t be eating that stuff so I will have to wait till next year to do it again. Will be worth the wait for sure ! Hah. Thanks for commenting and being a part of our channel Doug -F
@@fatherandsonreactions sounds good. Yeah, definitely consider reacting to the live version, it's really impressive as far as the guitar playing and overall dynamics of the song. ☮️
Definitely Private Investigations next then Romeo And Julie both very different but both awesome
You know what?? I Who loved sting didn't gues who hahaha
We gotta get Jamel to see this!! Someone send it to him!
Great song. By the way, have you ever listened to “Father to Son” by Queen?😊
I have! Not sure my father has. Great suggestion!! Thanks! -S
I'll tell you what this song is about for three Kit-Kat bars.
Symphony X :The Odyssey...............please:)
Willy Nelson??jk. I know its Sting..😂 , hey Larry, do you have a bottomless bag of musketeers..my son ate all the chocolate and left only the garbage bcandy Ethan, that was a huge time for MTV, it was like all we watched, videos and concerts all day, as far as Stings part in concerned..good jam guys,! Thanks as always for entertainment 🙂 I love the anticipation of what your final review of the song will be.. sometimes Larry I think you're loving the song, and then you say it sucked 🤣 Ethan, sometimes you might not necessarily look like your enjoying the song, band then you'll come back with a banging review! That's what makes you guys great , you don't always reveal..some of the other reaction channels you know immediately when they're jumping out of their chair and flipping their desk over✌️😂take care my brother's, hey Ethan, one last request for the Stones, " emotional rescue" maybe you already have it on the side👍see ya
Thanks for your awesome comment David! Glad you enjoy our reactions and we are glad you think we are different than other reaction channels! And yes, we have the song written down! Thanks!! -S
@@fatherandsonreactions love it bud! Thanks so much, talk soon😊
Amazing song, production, feature and genius riff. It's interesting to note how bad the lyrics age. I get that any song reliant on mentioning the tech of the time will age like milk but color tv, movies and microwaves arent nearly as impressive anymore.
There's not a chick in the world that comes for free. Classic song though. Have you done any early Genesis yet?
We haven’t! Sadly though, we know they get copyright blocked on YT. Any specific live versions we could try that you’d like to see? -S
(Love hot chocolate.
But those syrups can be added to hot chocolates... you got to ask for what they have though, and if they can add a flavor in. ;)
(Like cinnamon flavored syrup, for cinnamon hot chocolate! Agh! Another favorite! The options! Lol)
Oh man oh man that sounds AMAZING! Thanks Brian! Wow that’s a lot of different flavors you’ve had! -S
@@fatherandsonreactions Haha yeeep. I love trying new flavors of food and drinks (and as I said, love hot chocolates), so when I saw different syrup flavors... the world of hot chocolate flavors opened up. Lol (and have had zero regrets since. 😆)
Back when mtv was great. No today’s mtv.
Mtv stopped being fun when they stopped playing music videos all the time.
