    Man I can’t tell you how much your videos help. I work for Wagner caterpillar in Aurora, co maintaining the field service trucks. I’m the only fleet tech that I know of in Wagner. There’s the truck shop but they work on customers trucks. The cats we have are C7 WAX series in the gmc trucks which completely suck to work on and one 3126B that’s in a T300 kenworth. I’ve been a tech for about 5 years but cats are new to me so your videos on c7 and 3126 engines are a huge help. I’m getting pretty good at using SIS but it’s helps so damn much to actually see it. I just wanted to say I reference your stuff often so thanks for the help!

    Hi Josh. Great videos. I have a questions I was HOPING you could help me with (I’ve been troubleshooting for 4 weeks now). My CAT 259B3 is in limp mode. After about 5-10 mins it starts to crawl and exhaust smoke was blue/white sometimes. I changed - all 4 filters (oil, fuel, air, hydro). Then flushed coolant and changed thermostat and sensor. Then changed head gasket. Problem still continues. PLEASE HELP

    I've been trying to diagnose low power on my NXS for a long time. I've spent a great deal of money at different shops to achieve no result. Recently I found out the problem could be a spring in the fuel pump and it's suggested to replace it with part# 339-4983. Anyone else done this? Also I believe the wiring harness to the VVA and injectors has a short again for the fourth time. Anyone know how to fix that for good? Thanks

    Thanks for the info. My 98 Freightliner FLB stop engine light comes on now and again and the accelerator stops working while I'm driving until I tap on it rapidly. The engine is a M11 Celect 400 Cummins. It's been this way since I bought it 6 years ago. I hardly drive it as I'm slowly restoring her. The last owner did tell me about it and said it's something to do with the electronic accelerator thingy under the pedal and just tap on it a few times when it happens. Any advice would be appreciated.

    this segment has helped settle me down a little. My marine diesel de-rated a few days ago. I suspect contaminated fuel. But I'll have to pay to have it coded and cancelled. Or, maybe it's something terrible and expensive. Fingers crossed. My primary water/fuel separator had crud in it.
    Secondary wasn't perfect, but not nearly as bad. I'll have all the fuel in my tank dumped out and then cleaned out.

    My dad's work has a Freightliner Colombia from Fitzgerald Glider Kits with a 60 series Detroit that de-rated because it ran low on coolant, and instead fixing it they just let the truck sit so now the batteries are dead. That all happened 5 or 6 month ago... Also before that when my dad was still working for a company doing fleet fueling he and I took the company rollback out one Saturday to move fuel tanks from a small rental office lot to the main lot. Truck was a T300 KW with a Paccar engine and a 6 speed Alison transmission. One of the speed sensors on the transmission was failing so every bump we'd hit it would make the transmission controller derate the engine to 1500 revs and would lock the trans in what ever forward gear it happened to be in. Could push the R or N buttons all you wanted on the dash and I wouldn't do jack. Had to turn the truck off and restart it probably 20 times on the way back. Was really fun when it did that trying to pull out of the rest area. Think it may have been the output speed sensor since the speedometer would also drop to zero.

    Hey this is Jeff was at your shop few weeks ago with ECM problem on 3126. ECM was bad new ECM ran ok but topped out in 5th gear at 1950 rpm about 45 mph. What a slow ride going anywhere lol. The PTO engage for sweeping was a nightmare too would not fast idle when engaged. Since you are away no one there knows how to reprogram the ECM so I did it myself with one of the eBay link devices I showed you. Reset all parameters now I can go 120 mph max in 5th etc. Turns out the Allison would kick out the PTO at 1940 rpm not controlled by the Cat ECM. A complaint I always had with sweeper. I reprogrammed the Allison as well now cuts out at 3000rpm for PTO. Only concern is motor is rated at 300hp with this ECM I like the the added power but don't want to damage it as was original my 215hp. Regards

    Any vehicle that has any form of De-Rate built into should also be required to have an OVERIDE switch within the operators reach and clearly visible. When that vehicle is in any way in any form of jeopardy it should be the operators decision and NOT the computers whether the engine is De-Rated. If I'm stranded on a train crossing and there is a train coming, I don't give a damn if there is any oil pressure or anything else, I want it off the tracks now. Period.

    • @stanpatterson5033
      @stanpatterson5033 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I agree with you. But.... the over-ride switch is also subject to abuse. I saw a case of this back in '02 where a co-worker's truck broke down on the interstate. He didn't feel like walking, so he used the over-ride switch 12 times to get him to a truck stop, only he stopped short of the truckstop when the engine gave up. The drain plug bung had been twisted in the pan probably due to some over-zealous tech-mech over-torquing the drain plug back in after a service. So the thing had slowly pissed out its oil over about a half-day, to the point where the computer was red-lighting and shutting down the engine, but he wanted to keep going. Bottom line is, it cost our company about 40 thousand to replace an engine in a leased unit, and cost him his job. The ECM showed the whole event, including 12 uses of the over-ride switch. Truck was an '02 FL with a 12.7L Deestroyit. I got sent out to take the substitute/loaner unit back to its location, and bring our leased unit home after the lengthy "fight" over who was going to pick up the tab. Not saying that every driver would be that stupid, but hey if one guy can do it, how many others might try it, too?

    • @CumminsDslPwr
      @CumminsDslPwr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I really don't care about what "other people" do in their situation. That's on them, not the majority of actual operators, NOT wheel holders. $40,000 would be a cheap price to pay IF that truck had been sitting on a railroad crossing wouldn't it? That is MY point.

    • @alanack67

      CumminsDslPwr fire trucks and other ems vehicles have a disable switch for the emissions system.

    • @CumminsDslPwr
      @CumminsDslPwr 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alan, I'm not talking about an emissions overide, that's a separate issue. I'm talking about the De-Rate and Cripple mode, or Automatic Engine Shutdown mode that the manufacturers use and abuse. EXAMPLE: A faulty coolant level/flow sensor shuts an engine down in the middle of traffic on an interstate even though the engine isn't overheating. Now you have a 80,000 pound road block that is an accident waiting to happen. IF the operator had an overide, the truck could be moved to safety.

    A few years ago I was stuck behind a semi truck in a 1 lane construction zone going 5mph with his 4 ways on. I asked him on the radio what was going on and he said about a mile into the 1 lane construction zone (it was 1 lane for 8 miles) his truck derated and wouldn't allow him to go above 5mph. I was stuck behind him for well over an hour, traffic was backed up for several miles, and OH troopers were waiting at the end when we came out. All this to supposedly save a tree...

    Here's a tip if you're in a pinch on the side of the road with a Volvo. If the truck is derated, disconnecting the wheel speed sensor will remove the derate. I recommend only using this to bring a truck straight to the shop though, and obviously not with a code that could possibly do harm to the engine (low coolant, high coolant temp, low oil pressure, ect)

    • @sarge4000

    Sooo I heard about early 2000-2006 diesel engines' DPF getting clogged with soot, backing up the EGR coolers, and bursting some shet up. This is why DPF regenerator juices and ports for ijuice insertion were made, because many engines were not sustaining speed and duration requirements for the self-regeneration process of the original port-less DPFs. Wouldn't a clogged DPF derate it's engine plus more, so an ECM derate instead would save backed-up engine havoc?

    • @SOU6900
      @SOU6900 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you sure about that time frame? I've never heard of a 2000-06 diesel with DPF. EGR coolers didn't even come until 03, and DPF came out in 07 or 08 I think.

    And this crap is why people hate the EPA and start fuming about how it should be shut down. Unfortunately we need emissions controls to cut lung damaging exhaust emissions, and we are still in the first generations of the equipment to do it on Diesels. On gasoline engines the system is pretty much seamless and transparent at this point, but it didn't use to be that way (pellet type catalytic converters), and because of "once bitten, twice shy" some people still don't trust it. Hopefully in another decade the Diesel emissions controls become just as unobtrusive as gas ones are now and this is no longer an issue. Either that or Musk is right and we have electric trucks, hopefully from companies who don't share Tesla's negative attitude about selling parts or how to treat people with damaged or salvage vehicles.

    • @jellyfrosh9102

    • @jellyfrosh9102
      @jellyfrosh9102 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And people hate the EPA because the EPA are a bunch of dipshits. They don't actually fix the problem of pollution, they just make pointless regulation and act like they're helping. 2/3 of the smog on the west coast (L.A., which has some of the worst smog in the US) is from China. But rather than pressure China to actually stop polluting, we instead cripple ourselves and put stupid shit like DPFs on our vehicles, and require USLD making trucks both more expensive to buy and to run. And when your economy has 700 billion dollars a year based entirely on big diesel trucks shipping goods, it's not exactly a good idea to make those trucks more expensive.

    • @danielthechskid
      @danielthechskid 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FWIW both DPF and ULSD have nothing to do with smog. As I understand it smog is NOx, hence the urea SCR system, and unburned hydrocarbons, hence the DOC, being cooked by sunlight. The DPF is for catching soot that is small enough to embed in lungs like coal miner black lung and ULSD is to get rid of sulfur which becomes sulfur dioxide which becomes sulfuric acid in acid rain.

    Thanks A-A, I think my Duramax did that to me 2 years ago. I probably got some bad diesel at a station and it eventually clogged the fuel filter which had a water sensor on the bottom. On the way home from S Dakota the motor home suddenly died. I was able to restart it but could not go over 60 mph. I think the engine service light came on. Made it home to Houston and changed the filter with the special tool for the sensor removal. All is fine now. Do you have any input on exhaust brake compressors. I am on my second unit in 4 years. That is way to short to replace a $400 compressor for the exhaust brake and air horn. Some Caddys use the same compressor for air ride systems. J K

I was driving down a steep grade in the mountains outside of Leeds Alabama a few years ago and the trio valve blew and it was a loud hiss and pop and I coasted down the mountain with no brakes at an excess of 80mph and I rolled thru 6 stop lights before the truck slowed to a stop. I tried gearing down with the automatic selector and it didn’t even slowdown the truck. I was driving a 25 foot freight liner box truck with the Cummins engine. Thanks

      Stan Patterson I am not a diesel mechanic but anything gas I can tell you about. I don’t have a CDL. The truck I was driving was just under weight. It was automatic with air brakes. My company called road service and while I was in wal-mart the repair man fixed it in the parking lot. All I can tell you is that on both gauges for the air tanks I could watch the needles drop to the red when I touched the brakes and the brake went to the floor. The repair man said he replaced a trio or ABS valve.

    • @stanpatterson5033
      @stanpatterson5033 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, well as another commenter said, if the system experienced significant loss of air pressure, the spring brakes should have began to apply with no way to over-ride it. It's the way that air brake systems work. I'm not calling you out, but I've never heard of a trio valve (except in home plumbing). Could it have been a relay valve at the back over the axle?

      Any engine with an ECM is capable of it. Whether or not the automaker enables a feature like that, probably depends on where the engine (and vehicle) will be sold, what its' intended function will be, and will depend on what faults they want it to react to. For instance, while a car with air pressure sensors on each wheel... if the ECM picks up a very low pressure, it could derate the engine's power, limit the speed for safety, so that you don't get sailing along at 95 with only 17psi in a steer tire. It could save the car from experiencing a bad accident. But to you and me, we would see it as a pain-in-the-ass, when it's really a major motivation for the operator to get the tire properly inflated or get the leak fixed. Just an example. I don't know if any automakers really have a feature like that, but anything is possible, it's just a matter of writing another subroutine for the computer to check on, and programming it into the ECM. And then deciding whether to turn it on or not.

      The Cadillac north star was the first that I know of that would kill spark to cylinders if it got hot. Didn't work. They still pull head bolts out of the block and blow headgaskets. People still burn down engines. They say " I drove it till the computer shut it off". Nope! You drove it hot till it burned down

Same with Allison. I went to the local dealer here for a PTO issue not turning on and asked them to change PTO max rpm parameters they said they couldnt was controlled by the Cat Ecm lol which is true but after trying to change parameters with the Cat ECM still would cut out at 1940 rpm so all that was left was Allison. That fixed it.

    Another fucking burden on your wallet in already struggling trucking industry. This really hurt the o/o and small trucking companies

    What a shit system. What happens if you're stuck somewhere dangerous like over a rail crossing? Or a single track road so you block traffic for hours? Yet another utterly moronic decision in the pursuit of emission control.
