  • UWM professor Janis Eells’s research focuses on the ways to treat retinal degeneration and disease. In her Oct. 22, 2016, presentation "Unblinded by the Light: Light Therapy in Eye Disease," Eells gives the broad overview of that research at the Wisconsin Science Festival.

I had been told by an ophthalmologist that I have macular degeneration, which I consider to be a mild case. My symptom is that when I wake up in the morning and open my eyes, I see a small dark area that goes away in about a minute or two. I had not seen this video, but I thought about the idea that just the normal light in the room causes the spot disappear. So I had previously replaced all of the lightbulbs in the house with 9 Watt Daylight LED bulbs, which are equivalent to 60 Watt Tungsten filament incandescent bulbs that you can buy in stores. I thought if light makes the dark spot disappear, what if I just stare at a 9 Watt Daylight LED bulb and see what happens. So the last couple of days I stare at the bulb from about a foot away for up to five minutes. The only way I can describe this is that I am blown away by the results. In two days my symptoms are about 95% gone, and I expect that in a few more days I will no longer have any symptoms of macular degeneration. I don't believe these bulbs are bright enough to cause eye damage although after look away from staring at the bulb I see a round purplish area for a couple of minutes. The LED bulbs I am talking about are what you find in stores as a replacement for normal incandescent bulbs and have translucent covers that disperse the light. There are some LED bulbs that you should never look directly at, like LED bulbs that don't have a translucent cover like flashlights because the light is concentrated to a pinpoint and they will cause eye damage. From what I know about some of the causes of macular degeneration, alcohol and smoking are some of the biggest causes, although I have never smoked and never drank alcohol, I do have diabetes. My opinion is that almost any drug can be a factor in causing macular degeneration. I had taken medication to help with getting to sleep and I noticed that when I take it, the macular degeneration gets worse, so I am going to try and stay away from any type of medication if possible. Since I have diabetes, I have to keep my blood sugar under control and I use insulin to accomplish that. I believe that diabetes pills like glucophage are a big factor in causing macular degeneration, so I use insulin instead because insulin is a hormone and not a drug.

try berberine, pretty sure it is also good for both diabetes, mitochondria and a lot more!

Ahhhh the spuds in space project of the early 90s. I was at the Food Research Institute at UW Madison when it was in full gear. I didn’t know the eye findings originated there. I’m a big proponent of red light therapy. I’ve used a full body panel now for 3 years. I just went to my ophthalmologist this week in preparation for cataract surgery. He has nearly 15 years of scans on my optic nerve, corneal cells and retina, as well as images of the progression of the cataract. He reported to me that all my eye health parameters have improved significantly and I attribute it to the red light. The morphology of the corneal cells were vastly improved and the cataracts actually decreased in size. I have had no diet or supplement changes and have continued to wear the same gas permeable contacts. I’m going forward with the surgery because I’m inserting a multi focal IOL in the process so with gain on the refraction. I can only anecdotally conclude there was a benefit attributable to the daily use of the panel (has near red and infrared wavelengths).

The companies that ship light panels with safety goggles are aware light goes through them , into your eyes where it matters .

I have a platinum full body panel and have used it 3 years with no eyewear. I just got back from my ophthalmologist in prep for cataract surgery and he told me there was marked improvement in the morphology of my corneal cells, retina and even a small decrease in the size of my cataracts. I’ve had no changes in contact lens wear or diet or supplement usage. I attribute the improvement to the light therapy. I’m still moving forward with the cataract surgery because I’ll get the refractive benefit of the IOL. I plan on using the light therapy in recovery once the short term light sensitivity abates. Hope this info helps others .

If the retina ages faster, and is unable to produce as much atp, what is the mechanism by which the red-light benefits persist *AFTER* the therapy is over? Is it stimulating stem cells?
Is there a point where too much red light into the eye may be harmful?
Any thoughts on Glen Jeffery protocol (University of College London) that uses 670nm 3x a day for 2 weeks?

Laura I would suggest go to end all disease. Com and they have a number of red light devices to choose from. I have the lowest price one at $99 but I don't have results yet since I just started using it. I will say the light works fine and the owner of end all disease seems very knowledgeable. I hope this helps you.
