"Do you think God gives a damn about miniature donkeys, Colm?"
"I fear he doesn't. And I fear that's where its all gone wrong."
    Such a beautifully written movie.

Assumed Colm Sonny Larry might be an old rural Irish way of saying “*first name* son of *fathers name*”

the whole thing is a metaphor for the Irish civil war, it was a pointless feud between friends and neighbors that hurt everybody, not just the ones fighting and accomplished nothing and left people bitter.

The use of color is interesting. Yellow seems to symbolize hope, red is death, distruction.

I think Colm's issue is that he can't accept that he isn't really much better than Padraic and the other men on the island. Cutting his fingers is an excuse to not have to leave a legacy, in a way where he can blame Padraic for that.

In my top 3 movies of 2022, been waiting for someone to react to this
I recommend Triangle of Sadness which is another one of my faves from 2022 no one’s reacted to

PLEASE watch The Guard (also starring Brendan Gleeson btw) it's also written and directed by the same director as this movie.
    It's so funny!

I think your commentary reveals that Padraic isn't a great friend either. Like Colm said he only talks about himself. Like you said maybe if he made an effort to get into Colm's interest or learn an instrument to join him then he would've added value tot he friendship. The fact that he only wants him to join him in the pub and has no interest in his life says that he is selfish too despite labelling himself as a "good guy."

Not so much a metaphor for the civil war but on the nature of conflict. Conflict can arise from the smallest matter but eventually after the tit for tat action/revenge it escalates. At the end scene when there is no resolution to the conflict it is not because of what started it but the actions taken during the conflict that can`t be forgiven. Isn`t that true of so many conflicts.
