In the early 2000s me and some friends used to run an internet Cafe and all our pcs used asrock boards. Those things took a beating, they ran for years. 18 hours a day, 6 days a week, all the games.. we would swear by asrock. Now I wouldn't even want to touch an asrock board. I am a bit sad about it, but it is what it is.

What do you mean with an expensive kit of DDR5? Like the ram price compared to the price of a DDR4?

Great video Brian!! Very informative ! Here's the thing.. I have time to decide, as my funds are no where near being ready to upgrade. That being said you covered things pretty darned well ! If I were to upgrade though.. I definitely think I would go with ASUS first (not the highest end) but the tough choice would be a ddr4 or ddr5.. it is a tough call.. luckily my monetary constraints means that by the time I feel I need to retire my 9900k , that ddr5 will be more readily available , more cost effective , and by then higher performance then it already is . My advice? Just like with windows 11 .. Don't be an early adopter for the sake of being an early adopter.. it will only cost you unnecessary money , and possibly buyers remorse in the future. If what you have works well enough for now.. then wait and let the prices and kinks get worked out for a while to allow you to make a more well informed decision..

Thank you, this was so very helpful. I've been in tech for 25 years working on multi-million dollar projects, this new upgrade had me stumped at first. New chipset, new memory, new motherboard innovations, and I want to keep my Noctua!. I'm probably going to go for the Strix Z690-G and a 12900K - it will be the first upgrade since 2017 so might as well be for something meaningful. I will hold off for a few months though - let's see how it beds in and it gets Christmas out of the way.

I had a negative experience with them, but it was back in the z97 devils canyon days. Replaced the AsRock with a gigabyte back in 2015 and I’m just retiring that build. I tried the MSI pro series and it was junk. Long post times, no wake after sleep and many more bugs, sure enough returned and purchased a gigabyte z690 board and haven’t had issues since.

Im inclined to stick with my current machine until new features justify the cash required...

    Great video, as always, Brian.
At first, I was disappointed, only one current offering of mATX. But then, I realized: SLI/CF is dead. I don’t use a sound card for well over 15 years. I don’t use a PCI-e card other than the single GPU in my system. Everything else is either m2 (including the wireless adapter) or USB. I don’t expand memory over the two DIMM slots. So why not mini-ITX? I really don’t need to go back up to the ATX/eATX sizes. Now if only mini-ITX weren’t outrageous expensive for what they offer…
Thanks for filling the gap on what else exists aside of performance and AMD vs Intel discussions others are focusing on.

My wife is building a new machine here (I let her go first as we can't afford 2 PC's at once and she games on PC much more than I DO)
She recently bought tha ASUS Z690-E Motherboard for her new PC.
We've been Buyying components since the beginning of the month as we see them going on sale or at a good price
    So far
We have her machine 70% ordered Needing just a GPU, PSU and Windows Key left to buy
But none of the parts we ordered have yet arrived.
Once she gets her new machine her old Laptop will sell and recoup us most of the money we spent on the new machine. and then in the spring once I am able to get some Holiday bonus money etc etc then I should be able to afford to buy a PC for myself. to replace this old aging I7 4000 Series "Beast" i have going now.
We actually both wanted similar components in our new builds except for the GPU so we opted to buy the lower of the 2 GPUs we wanted at first (In hopes I can convince her that that GPU is in fact enough for her needs) and then if she still does want a bigger GPU once I am able to afford my PC I will buy the bigger GPU and swap with her.
