      I'm happy to hear you enjoyed this one. It was good to visit some of the Eastern Cape towns we've never been to before. Some places are in desperate need of attention and are hanging by a thread, but others seem to be bustling and thriving, which was great to see. Thanks for your company on every mile, we always love having you on board! 🚙🤩

    Hi you two! Thank you for taking me along on this interesting trip. Beautiful approach under blue skies an open fields . The town is so spacious and clean, beautiful churches and buildings, but I get a feeling that it reaching the end of its road. The Gariep Dam is bigger than I imagined it to be, really a spectacular sight!
    Glad you two found time to enjoy our victorious rugby game!
    I'm ready for our next trip.
    Keep safe!

      It felt good waking up a World Champion that Sunday morning, despite the long road home which lay ahead. 😁🏆 Both these towns appear to be struggling somewhat. We chatted to some folks who intend sticking around and making it work, so I can only hope they succeed. 🤞🏻 The Gariep Dam, despite its defunct holiday resort, is a stunning location. Thanks for coming along! 🚙🤩

    I am glad you were able to see the rugby 🙂. I was in Venterstad and Oviston somewhere in the late 70's, and then it was still a bustling little town. I even met Ms Venter of Venterstad...she was then the Divisional Council Secretary. But these places have now gone to ruins...and then I think of those words...."a better life for all"...anyway let me not dwell on it any further...Awaiting the next adventure....which I see will now hit the screens on 18 December!

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wasn't going to miss that game for anything! 😁🏉 When I read your comment, it's hard for me to imagine that these two little places were bustling once upon a time. They're far from it today and I hope the residents can somehow secure a prosperous future. I wish I saw the places you describe during your visit. 🚙😥

      Yes, both of these towns were super quiet and we're quite frankly a little worried for both and hope the current residents will rebuild what they can and live happily there. I appreciate your company on this trip and look forward to sharing our current trip with you soon! 🚙🤩

    I get so mixed up with Venterstad, Ventersdorp, Ventersburg, Ventersborts.....there are too many of them! Lovely little town, beautiful old buildings. Good that you could view the beautiful old reformed church up close. A bit of luck encountering the Oviston nature reserve. So awesome to see Gariep dam. Very interesting to read about Orange Fish Tunnel.I first heard about this massive project when I stayed in PE, it brought a lot of relief to drought stricken Sundays river areas. Love the watch. What a pity about Lake Gariep Resort. Such a divine location. Wonder what happened.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was rather cool to drive through the Oviston Nature Reserve, we'll never say no to that! 🚙😁 The Orange-Fish Tunnel was a remarkable story to read and made us proud. 🇿🇦 My feeling is that mismanagement led to the demise of the Lake Gariep Holiday Resort, but it's pure speculation on my part and I don't know for sure. It was sad to see it in all but ruins. 😥🏘️

    Hi to the 2 bugs,it is Alan the Molteno man again. If you go to the Gariep dam wall it is rather spectacular and there is a lot of activity with boating and water sport.There is a large resort or resorts for holiday makers. In the winter of 1969 on a Sunday I went to the opening ceremony of the then named H F Verwoerd dam. We arrived at around 10h00 and found a position on the dam wall. Well the wind was blowing in from the south and it was freezing. It was later reported that the temperature was on 1 degree Celsius at midday.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, what an experience to have witnessed the opening ceremony of the largest dam in our country! 🤩🌊 We visited Gariep Dam in Episode 202 and it was a fantastic experience. Dam wall tours are not easy to arrange post-COVID. One has to apply at the Department of Water and it has to be done well in advance, which we didn't know before our visit. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    The buildings that looks like railway stations are old RTS Road Transport Services depots that were serviced by the old Railway busses and goods trucks from the nearest rail station. Property of the then Railways

    Hi guys loved the drive in wide open landscape Blue skies and fluffy clouds. The town as seen better days as always the sports fields seem to go first the kids playing in the ruins reminds me of when I was a young kid playing in the bomb ruins in London 10 years or more after the blitz .the abandoned property amazes me in a country that as a acute lack of housing. Positive that the school is being fixed up.the guys getting water in the wheel barrows mind blowing you are upset with outsiders getting jobs so you cut off your own water .the Romaneques Anglecan church looked strange in this environment but not for the first time they are sharing with the Methodists. The little Gospel church was intriguing. The Reform church was interesting and I'm glad you worked out the different dates we'll kept and with a low fence! Another Positive the bowls club is going strong. The newest thing in the town seems to be the monument in the park. The town had a sleepy vibe and I was just waiting for a tumble weed to come down the road let's pray it can thrive again interesting future 🙏. The Geriep lake views were outstanding and those tunnels sound brilliant what a idea those guys deserved a medal. The prefab housing looks good so interesting about the name. Shame about the resort I've said it before I love how you can drive right down to the lake .the team building place was great with the assault course!!! The little grotto on the road was brilliant if you ever go to Greece they have them all along the roads. Great you got to see the rugby final I never doubted you would 👍 more education for me of rural SA thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one

      How fascinating that you played in bomb ruins as a kid. I'm amazed every time at how many interesting experiences you've had! That marble monument was for sure the newest structure in town, the rest needs a whole lot of TLC. It was interesting for us as well to check out those prefab houses that have stood the test of time and which folks literally built a town from. 🚙🏘️

    Go Bokke!!
    Methodist churches tend to be on the simple side, almost out of a feeling that "adornment is sinful", I think. Adornment is of-this-world (not quite as bad as drinking a glass of alcohol, but it's frowned upon.) That's why there's never much in the way of architecture in a Methodist Church on your travels (I suppose they were also quite a small sect everywhere, too.)
    I suppose Oviston just came to its end a bit less quickly than originally expected? Part of the demise of the resorts might simply be due to the people who supported them ceasing to do so - so their reason for existence just ceased, as people got into other things. Maybe. It would be interesting to know the full facts.
    Also Ventersdorp, although it looks run down just looks to me to have reached its "natural end of life". Small towns in remote places, the world over, are dying out as the urban trend continues everywhere. I've seen videos of Texas towns that look like they have less life in them. Sad but not tragic, one might say.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The depopulation of small country towns is by no means a new phenomenon. For me, though, the few remaining folks made it their business to keep what was left beautiful and in good condition. There doesn't seem to be many more of those folks around, which is sad to see. I think the current population will keep these town alive, but I'm not sure a prosperous future is on the cards. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I hate to be this guy, but some pointers.....
    1. When you walk around it sounds like you are dragging chains. Probably your keys and stuff in your pockets. Very annoying.
    2. The laughing, i have no problem with laughing per se, but it is a bit overdone.You giy laugh and smirk at everything it seems. Annoying.
    3. Why so many ads all the time? Too much. Distract from overall viewing pleasure.
    4. You focus and spend too much time at graveyards.
    5. Finally, light a fire sometimes and braai n tjoppie dude. 😊
    Sorry to moan and groan, but you need some polishing. Otherwise i like the format and want you to have more viewers.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Our videos are completely free to watch and the ads help towards our high fuel bill. It doesn't sound like we're your cup of tea, dude. You should look for less-annoying content and we'll continue making our videos exactly the way we want to. Thanks anyway for watching! 🚙😁

  • @funkdunk
    @funkdunk ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The late and perhaps of the greatest musical artists of our time...Theuns Jordaan was from Venterstad...it is unfortunately on a downward trajectory, its people will be better served with jobs and as in Sonia's perennial optimistic words "what still can be accomplished..." monuments are meaningless when citizens are worse off, still having to wheelbarrow water and firewood...in comparison to the engineering feat of 82km of an underground tunnel ...ensuring sustainability for the future back then. Speaking of marvels, your trips are a marvel too, where you take us to, all corners and every conceivable place...quite fitting that you watched the beautiful game in Beaufort West 😊

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      While I accept that monuments and such have no significance in the lives of those who struggle, I still can't fathom the destruction of them because of that fact. So one day when prosperous times hopefully roll around again, the towns will be in all but ruin because of that sentiment. 🤷🏻‍♂️ What a beautiful game it was! I felt quite proud leaving Beaufort West that morning as a World Champion! 😁🏆
