    I think you’re the only reviewer that’s actually used the Reverse properly. Everyone else says it doesn’t work and the reason it doesn’t work is because of operator error!

    This is a great bike. But you must ride the newest Gold Wing Tour. The lower seat and center of gravity combined with it’s DCT transmission is sublime and it’s also got a TFT screen and back lighted handlebar switches make for easy on the eyes night riding. Excellent fit & finish to a luxury Touring bike.

    • @RevMonkey
      @RevMonkey  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aye, serious bikes those Goldwings. Nothing really comes class to what they achieve.

    My wife and I test drove this bike a year ago when I was going to exchange my 2014 HD streetglide special. I wanted to love it. My wife complained she sat too high and was getting a lot of wind. I didn’t like the way I sit. Felt kind of a sport bike and no floor boards. I got a 2018 Indian Chieftain Limited instead. Very happy with my choice. BMW certainly has the bells and whistles.

    • @RevMonkey
      @RevMonkey  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aye, it's a cracking bike but I think, to be fair, coming from that bike background, the Indian was always going to make more sense and that is the beauty of biking - different bikes and setups mean different things to different people. Myself, if I had the money I would likely go with the Gold Wing but I would certainly try them . I have been to the Indian dealer a few times now - about 40 minutes from me - and they do some really cool Stuff. I do like what the brand is setting out to do and would have no issue at all owning one.

    TFT screen on BMW touring bike will add $2 or more thousand of dollars to the retail price I'm guessing, pushing the 1600GL over the $30k, the goldwing has analog dash, I agree with you but like to see the cost remain fairly constant. Finger are crossed. Keep up the great work! ✌🏽

    • @RevMonkey
      @RevMonkey  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, fair point. It's already an expensive bike with so much kit on it. A full TFT screen is a bit of a luxury and we never needed one before though I do like them.

    To say "BMW spent a lot of time getting the wind off the rider as *effectively* as possible" is wrong in my humble opinion. It's either wrong or BMW engineers are incompetent, and I certainly don't believe that. If you want wind protection, the K1600 is good. You have more wind protection than on competing sport tourers like the FJR but much less than a pure tourer like the Goldwing.
    I believe this is by design and BMW wanted to leave a little bit of air on the rider for a feeling of sportiness. The K1600 was designed from the beginning to be, as the Motorrad design chief put it, "a shark and not a whale" when he was asked about comparisons to the Goldwing. I believe this means the design is intended to be sleek and slim... as opposed to being a design that maximized wind protection as effectively as possible (which it is not).
    The same can be said for rain protection. The K1600 is good, but not great like the Goldwing.
    With that said, which bike is in my stable? The K1600. The straight-six engine is German engineering at its' finest; it is absolutely MAGICAL. Paired with a suspension that challenges you as a rider to become good enough to use it, and this becomes a bike that other bikes dream about.

    • @RevMonkey
      @RevMonkey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Beautifully put. Nice one. I totally get the point about a shark vs a whale.

    • @RevMonkey

      It depends on how you look at it. BMW develops their fairings in the windtunnel. My old K1100RS for example, had just a little screen, but with a small spoiler on top you could adjust to your height. It did a good job at keeping the wind off my helmet. It was too small for rain protection, but as a wind deflector it worked great.
      BMW did it's best to make the best compromise between wind/rain protection, aerodynamics and try to give the bike a sleek look. While it's still a big bike and everybody can see that, if you make the fairing bigger, it would look like said whale.

      I have only ridden the Bagger for a very short distance, and it not much different to the GTL. The Bagger, I guess is more for the American market and more for one-up riding. I have asked BMW for a Bagger, but they still don't have one in their press-fleet. I guess the South African market is not Bagger-country.
