Hello my friends! Some time ago my friend, true artist and craftsman Igor Polasiak (igorpolasiak.pl) asked me for some kind of round plane. He wanted to match this plane to one inch round bit, which can't be used on curved cabinets fronts. We decided to make it with two sets of depth stops (one shallow and one with full height of round profile), that's why they are screwed into the body, but finally one shallow set is enough. In the wideo i'm gonna show you my actual setup, which is very close for making hollows & rounds. I hope you will like it. Cheers! Stavros
The beauty of your previous vineo's were the fact you do everithing with your hands... and not using any power tool. The precision of you cisel, the inovative way you find solutions to hand craft... it was a pleasure to watch... the smal tools dand made... perfectly adjusted to the tight spaces inside your planes. You chose to step out from what make me look to your video's, I dont know if this was a good idea or not, not for me to judge, but I step out from here. Wood have to be treated with love of your hands that you use to do... machine it... anybody cand do. By Stavros... wish you good luck.
I echo other voices here to say I really miss watching you do everything with hand tools, but I also understand that if you’re going to make money from selling your planes you need to use the power tools. Still enjoy watching you make your planes. It is such a pleasure.
I love the machining. It is still manual woodworking, just with powered tools. You’ve already demonstrated your competency with hand tools; no reason to add additional labor hours for a contracted build. Saved yourself and your client billable hours. Beautiful result.
I don't know much about woodworking, but I can always recognise high quality craftsman shift. I recognise that this object is not just a work of art, but truly functional. I know enough to know I do not understand or appreciate everything about it, and it would take a true craftsman to even understand it fully. But I can tell quite easily that this is an execution of design excellence, not only aesthetically, but in practical use too. Every angle has been carefully considered, every cut is made with masterful confidence. And the end result is absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing this :)
Another beautiful piece of artisan workmanship, nice to see you embracing technology but still finishing by hand thank you for another amazing video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Absolutely amazing craftmanship. I believe your planes are amongst the best ever made. I, much like many others, will point out that the love of working with hand tools is what got me here, but I will always watch such a wonderful plane being made!
I very much like your hand builds and I’ve learned so much from them. I would love to see a few more builds by hand. I’d like to see you tackle a H&R matched pair and a pair of snipesbill plates. Only because I’d like to make these myself.
nicely done. I love the acrylic sheeting containment system you made for the wood chips on you milling machine. I'm sure that makes cleanup a lot easier and prevents a lot of rust issues.
As always, a superb video detailing the precision and incredible craftsmanship ( both hand and machine) that is required to produce such wonderful planes (hollows and rounds in this case). The close up content is superb and highlights all the combined skills to make such glorious working hand planes. Most grateful to you for continuing to provide such content - it really is appreciated on so many levels!
*Outstanding work. Love how you crafted this piece, regardless of weather it's hand crafted or machine made it's still a work of art. Job well done and great video*
Chociaż generalnie dłubię w metalach kolorowych oraz stali to za każdym razem oglądam kolejny twój film z zainteresowaniem . Maszyny sterowane komputerowo także są interesujące . Strug pierwsza klasa aż chce się go przytulić 😆👍
Great video as usual. Like most, I miss the hand tool videos but you can’t stop progress. The machine videos are equally fascinating and you can’t argue with the results. One tiny bit I disliked was the styrofoam packing. Whenever I unpack something and find the stuff I curse and rage. Cardboard, paper, shavings… so many options that are less annoying and better for the environment.
This is very similar to one I was thinking of. No bullnose, but a square Rebate that can do 1/4", 3/8", 1/2". I imagine it would still need an iron per size though.
Like many other commenters, I feel that your 'hand made' videos were more visually appealing and offered a more romantic view of traditional plane making, so perhaps this move towards machining might impact your viewing figures? However, I can see that you have built jigs and fixtures which will offer huge efficiencies for upscaling to mechanised batch production, so maybe your intention is to earn your living manufacturing planes rather than making youtube videos. If this is the case I wish you every success, because you make superb planes!
Thank you👍 Some time ago i switched my daily job to planemaking. I have to work fast and repetitively. About my TH-cam video's - this channel was always kind of report of my planemaking progress and still is. I still make planes and i still show how i make them - there is no change 🤟

Always happy to see a new video from you, Stavros! I’ve been binging your videos lately because I’m planning to make a jack plane soon using Nicaraguan woods.
I really enjoy your videos. I'm curious. Did you always make your own blades, or is this a new development as a result of starting a business? All the best in all your endeavors.
Thank you! I started make my irons some time ago. I make them as i want - any shape, any thickness and width. That was always a huge problem to find a lot of the same vintage irons. Cheers
Love the machining, if you are going to make a viable business, this is the way to cut the time, but keep the accuracy, at 7,41 could you have used a mortice drill to keep the squareness, I have done the exact same thing, it worked well, greetings from Wales,🏴
A low angle works well for end grain. The normal pitch of 45⁰ is kinda "general purpose". A higher angle (usually 55⁰) is good for stubborn ignorant woods, twisty grain and such. The lower the pitch, the more itll tend to tear, but it's easier to push. The higher the angle, the more it prevents tearing, but it gets harder to push. I think 55⁰ is called "York pitch", but I could be wrong on that 😂
Part of the fun of watching your channel is seeing your tooling evolve. Hope the selling of your products works well for you. If I can figure out instagram, I will order one. I did see some Japanese plane maker who had a hydraulic set up that would do most of the chopping out of the blank by machine. It was a pretty neat invention. If you haven't seen it, I will try to find it for you. One can never have too many tools! Errr, toys....
Thank you :) i saw that Japanese machine, but i don't know if the angle of the blades is adjusted. I work with different angles. You can write me an email stavros.gakos.handplanes@gmail.com Cheers!
People complainng about using power tools and machines need to remember that Stavros has done all these tasks by hand tools only. Using machines is just to get more repeatable results. Are you driving a car now? Why not stick to bycicles? Does driving a car make you incapabable to ride a bycicle? And the atitude of "You changed. You should be using hand tools." is like telling your kids you are not cute any more. Can you go back to being 5 years old? Come on people. What's wrong with optimizing workflow? Should we go pick our own firewood, make charcoal, grow our own food now?
Hey :) For some people pleasure of watching is the most important and the only thing, but i work in my workshop for profits and customers pleasure of using my tools 🤟
