G Scale | Rebuilding track for better operating. Awesome new track from

  • The Rockwall Canyon RR has taken on some major rebuilding projects on each end of the line. The triple track mainline at Rockwall has been deteriorating over the years from UV damage. Much of the Aristo and USA trains track was quite old and had faded or crumbling ties. On the other hand, my LGB track, which is actually a bit older was fairing much better because they used a more UV tolerant plastic. I decided to try use another German made track with similar plastic ties : TrainLi's proline track which is made in Germany. The track includes high quality 6ft brass rails and flex ties already mounted (huge time savings!).
    My old tracks were not discarded!These sections were spray painted with rustoleum to reinvigorate the ties with a few more years of UV protection and placed at St Patricks. Eventually these ties can be replaced, but for now they live on just fine, especially those placed on the elevated sections where they are fully supported anyways.

    3:29 Aristocraft and USAT use 1:29th scale or #1 scale on G gauge track. Europeans use 1:32 scale or I scale, #1 in Roman numbers, also on G gauge track. Originaly. G scale refered to LGB narrow gauge trains, 1:22.5 scale on G track.The whole thing got messy later on by making up the term G scale which means nothing. Manufacturers followed the trend, which will be impossible to break. I, however, wil call them either #1 scale or 1:29th scale.

      Thanks for writing back with your explanation. So, I agree with you that 1/29 scale is a much more accurate description for Aristo and USAT trains.
      However, the term "#1 scale" was introduced by aristocraft only on their later packaging. This term was largely rejected by the garden train world because it confuses the scale and gauge. American models (by Accucraft, Bowande, etc..) are also being produced in 1/32 that are called Gauge 1 or 1 Gauge, and for once, there is a historical precedence for that.
      In this case, Gauge 1 refers to the size track they run on, and the scale is implied to be 1:32 as that is the proper standard gauge scale for gauge 1 track.
      It fits in within the existing gauge system. Gauge 3, 2, 1, 0, H0 (half 0)
      The same confusion happens in the small scales 0 Scale, H0 scale, etc... They're really talking about gauge, and the scale is implied.
      So even though 1/29 scale trains run on Gauge 1 track, we are careful not to call them gauge 1 trains, because the implied scale is 1:32. Thus, we have G scale..🤡

    Like the 44 toner, glad you got her gears repaired, great layout update. Is your track floating for the most part?

      Thanks Ron! Yes, I'm really happy to have it running properly (for the most part)! The ground level track is indeed just floating on crushed stone. I also use split jaw clamps in strategic places (usually just on one rail at each joint to save $). The elevated sections are also floating on crushed stone as well due to the wet clay soil they help navigate across.

      Thanks so much! I know exactly how that feels!! The prices are absolutely crazy. My best advice is to join a local club. Every now and then, you'll find someone local who is selling off large track lots they really don't want to ship. That's when you can get some really great deals! I have one friend who moved up to ride on scale and needed to raise funds for that, so that's why he sold his track to me. He still occasionally visits to run his F scale steamers! You never know what opportunity will present, just hard to work out the timing!

    Super lot of engineering work done there brilliant idea hauling out thestation with the tractor hehe, I used peco track from the start after seeing all the issues with Aristo ties falling apart so far after twenty years almost all still good, do you have a part number for the gears for the 44 tonner, mine is almost done only running on one axle,, cheers and thanks for the update 🛤👍

    what is the grade rise on the underpass spiral. Looking at adding a extension of 72 foot run with a 19 inch rise.

      Hi Kendra, Thanks for watching! You would certainly be good to go. The 19in climb divided by 864in length indicates a 2.20 percent grade. My overpass track is actually more like 4%. So that's a lot steeper than I prefer, but since it's not mainline I let it go. My mainline max grade is 2%.

      Oh man, it's really great!! Heaviest engine in the fleet and it sure is a puller! It's a USA trains GP38-2 with modified paint by me and weathering by J&A Trains.

      That's totally fine...it's messy! Which scale do you consider to be G scale? Or do you just prefer the term G gauge?
