Salem, Massachusetts is always buzzing with Sanderson Sister trio costumes this time of year. I met three guys as the Sanderson Sisters there in 2018 and I have a photo with them. It's pretty awesome. 😂
Totally agree about the acting, her delivery of “you sold your soul, you’re the ugliest thing that’s ever lived, and you know it!” Is one of my favorites in cinematic history.
Bette Midler, Winnifred Sanderson, is on record as this is her FAVORITE role she has ever had. Along with having a very successful music career Bette has had a very large movie career. But as said the role of Winnifred is her favorite.
Absolutely everyone in this movie does a perfect job playing their role, but I agree that Thora Birch (Dani) does an especially amazing job for someone her age. This movie motivated me to study the Salem Witch Trials, and I learned that I'm actually a direct descendant of Mary Parker, who was tried, convicted, and hanged as a witch in 1692. I now live in Salem, Mass and it's crazy to think that an ancestor of mine was hanged for witchcraft right outside of what is now a Walgreens, lol.
Wow that’s amazing and the fact you found that out is incredible! And now you are living in the place where the tragedy of your ancestor whose life was taken
Bette Midler is such an icon, and such a phenomenal voice. Kathy Nijimy and Sarah Jessica Parker we’re brilliant too in this. It’s a so so movie but it is SO much fun that it doesn’t even matter.
That is the joy of many holiday movies . . . they don't have to be cinematic masterpieces, they just have to hit you in whatever holiday place you reside. One of my favorite Christmas movies is "Holiday in Handcuffs". Totally cheesy ABC Family/Lifetime type movie but a lot of fun without the excess of many Christmas movies.
the kid actress Dani (Thora Birch) has a pretty decent filmography and is always good. she has been acting pretty much all her life and still is i think most recently in the walking dead and going to be in the Wednesday series i believe
Someone probably already said this but the moths in Billy's mouth was done with practical effects. Doug Jones had a lining in his mouth to keep the moths both dry and separate from his mouth.
The sequel was surprisingly delightful and expanded the lore in ways that didn’t feel hurtful to the original. I would strongly urge you to give it a chance
My only problem with the movie is that even though the witches are the highlight of the movie, the movie still suffered from how the protagonists were put on the back burner to the point where when they actually do focus on them, it's somewhat of a drag. I didn't feel that problem with the kids in the original because they were fleshed out enough as characters. For plot reaosns, it wasn't until literally last minute I was just starting to find the new kids interesting.
thora birch is the actress that plays dani and she has been in quite a few movies from the 90s and 2000s. she was also in "now and then" and when she got a little older..."american beauty". both good movies! she also did an indie film called "ghost world" with scarlett johansson when they were both younger. another interesting movie to check out.
This made my day watching this with you for Halloween season. It's so much fun seeing first timers reacting to this film since it's so special to me. I love how you embraced the campiness and how you get the jokes like how over dramatic Winnie is ("I feel the icy breath of death upon my neck.") And I have so much praise for this film overall, like Dani. I'm glad you could see how awesome she is. She has the best lines too "take her to the movies like a normal person" and how extra she was when she said "a virgin lit the candle" when she could simply say he lit the candle lol. Then there's the disgruntled wife of "Satan", as well as Ernie and ICE 😂...I could literally go on and on, but I think you get the picture haha. By the way, I know you were kinda roasting the kids for not being careful sometimes but I see a bit of Max in you. Underneath that veil of maturity I sense a bit of cynicism/ insolence in you Thor. Can you honestly say you wouldn't have lit the black flame candle given the chance? "It's just a bunch of hocus pocus." I could totally see it! - Anyway, off to rewatch the highlights cause this movie is like a drug. As you said, it has that magic feeling like Home Alone. The jokes never get old :)
24:46 Well spotted plothole here, which was caused by a deleted scene/storyline where the witches actually used poisoned candy to bewitch their victims. In the original storyboard, Emily's bed has an apple on it with a bite taken out of it. The witches then made "candy crows" and distributed them out to the kids in order to make them suseptible to Sarah's song.
While it does add a bit to the lore...I'm glad they dropped that plotline as it empowers the witches more to not have to use the candy. I would fanwack that the reason Allison and Max aren't affected is not an age thing. There's actually teens in the mob if you look closely...I think is because Allison before floored the whole room with salt. Yes is a stretch...but I think it figures. Regardless...love this movie!!! 💯🤗
Interesting thing a good part of this movie was filmed in Salem MA and California. Salem is a lot of fun especially if you research where or what you want to do while you're there whether it be eating locations, historic locations, pubs or just for fun. Max's house, the grave yard, first scene houses, school, Allison's house and even the town hall is in Salem.
definitely a treasure, so glad its getting more attention with the recent sequel! honestly sarah jessica parker did such a good job as sarah sanderson that its actually hard to tell its her at all
I chuffin love this film. Its so funny. All three ladies are brilliant in it, but Bette Midler was hilarious. I love it when she sings "I Put A Spell On You". I think its one of those movies you (well... Me)don't mind watching again and again. 🎬❤🧙♀️🧙♀️🧙♀️ BTW.... Glad you liked it, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it with you.
I love when people watch this for the first time; they never expect the witches to be as hysterical as they are, and it's great to see reations to it! I definitely watched this as a kid, but appreciate it more as an adult; it's my #1 Halloween must-watch, only tied with Halloweentown. I do recommend checking out the sequel; it's not QUITE as good as this one, but the three actresses return as the witches and do a phenomenal job and it's still highly entertaining.
Great reaction! The new Hocus Pocus is a sequel and was surprisingly good. You should watch and react to it. The 3 witches look exactly the same and fall right back into their roles
I love Thora Birch so much, and she was such a cute little girl as Dani. It would be cool if you did a series of Thora Birch movies, some of the ones I remember most are Now and Then, American Beauty, and Ghost World (which happens to be one of my favorite movies as well). She has such a diverse career, it would be a really weird series of movies to watch, but entertaining!
YAY!! LOVE THIS MOVIE!! Steven Spielberg was going to direct this film, but sadly had to drop out to direct the Oscar Winning Dinosaur Epic JURASSIC PARK.
I think it was for the best. This movie wouldn't look as good if they kept shining spotlights to the camera lens or backlit every character's head making a greyish outline.
18:16 That's siblings Penny Marshall (most recognized for playing Laverne on the sitcom Laverne & Shirley) and Garry Marshal (most recognized for directing classic TV shows like The Odd Couple, Happy Days, and Mork & Mindy).
I went to see this with my mother and aun and cousin. We loved it. My mother passed away last Feb., this will be the firsts Halloween I've watched it without her. But I'll always remember the fun first time and all the good years that followed.
The little girl is Thora Birch. She is a good actress. She has been in American Dream and Now and Then.I like that these Witches act like the Three Stooges. I met the actor that played the Zombie at comic con. He is Del Toro’s go to guy to play monsters in his movies. He is in the Hell Boy movies as Abe Saipan the merman. He also plays the Merman in Shape of Water and the Sliver Surfer in the second Tim Story Fantastic Four movie.
This movie ticks a few boxes for me. It's my favorite Disney movie. My favorite cult status movie. And Winifred Sanderson is my favorite Disney villain
I would love if you watched the sequel too! I saw a lot of people hating on it but honestly it brings the same energy and fun as the first movie and that’s what Hocus Pocus is all about!
There is a couple of reasons I was not keen on the 2nd one, firstly the story wasn't as good in my opinion and they were trying to hard to teach a lesson.
I cannot tell you how much I love these 3 theatrical, quirky witches… just, bizarre levels of joy 😂. I also became obsessed with I Put A Spell On You bc of this movie, was listening to every cover I could find. Awesome that your reacting to this classic!
Follow the connection of the kid sister and add cult classic film Donnie Darko to your list. She isnt as in the spotlight, but its worth the watch for sure. Then link Patrick Swayze from that to Ghost 😁
"Hocus Pocus" comes from "hoc est corpus", the Latin words from the eucharist where the priest says "this is my body". The magic that supposedly turns the bread into the flesh of Jesus is called on to turn something into something else.
The first one is a classic because it was done in the 90s when everything just seem to have more humor and laughs and jokes. But now the new one is fine. But it doesn't compared to this one. This one is and always will be the best Hocus pocus. I think they shouldn't have added a second one I feel they almost rued it.
Ice and Jay are my favourite random side characters in a movie ever 🤣 especially Jay, I always had a huge crush on him and just his line delivery. Love Thackery too “there are not enough children in the world to make thee young and beautiful” 🤣
I didn’t even know this movie exist until 3 years ago at Spirit Halloween. It’s also pretty dark that they actually killed a kid in the first 10 minutes. 😅🎃
Thora Birch who played Dani was in a lot of movies as a child my other two favorites were Alaska and Now & Then. Of the two I think you would really enjoy Alaska
Was it weird for anyone else to see Sister Mary Patrick (Sister Act) as witch when they were kids? Bette Midler (Beaches made me cry) said she did this movie because her kids couldnt see her other movies. This was before Sex in the City, I knew Sarah Jessica Parker from Flight if the Navigator (still a family fave), Girls Just Want to Have Fun gwith Helen Hunt), Footloose, and later The First Wives Club.
There's committing for a role and then there's the three witches in this movie, beyond awesome. I haven't been able to hear I Put A Spell On You since childhood without thinking about Bette Midler.
Fun fact: Did you know that the word Cob is Old English for Spider. So cobwebs literally means spider webs. Lob is also another Old English word for Spider. (Shelob means: She Spider)
Great reaction to a great movie. I guess there are a few theories for the origin of Hocus Pocus. The one I'm familiar with is that it's a corrupted form of a Latin blessing in the Catholic Mass: Hoc est corpus meum "This is my body."
Love this movie! Thora Birch was in one of my favorite angsty teen movies, Ghost World. The sequel is ok, not as fun. Someone did SJP dirty in the eyebrow dept. Also, if you watch HP chamber of secrets you’ll probably need a trigger warning for…something.
I've watched this movie atleast 400 times... I have the book... been to all the places they filmed... Max's house, town hall, the school, Allison's house, the park with the fountain after they burn the witches... and read all the trivia 😂😂😂
the girl who played dani, thora birch, was in a lot of movies. she was a big child actor. my two favorites of hers are ghost world (with scarlet johanson and steve buchemi) and now and then which has a great cast and is kind of a girl version of stand by me.
The origins of Hocus Pocus are simply this: During the early 1600s, Hocus Pocus was name commonly adopted by a juggler or magician. The name and the words "hocus pocus" which were often chanted during tricks involving sleight of hand is believed to be a perversion of the latin blessing from Catholic mass, Hoc est corpus meum, or this my body. According to google anyway
I know this was one year ago but the last part of the explaination is not completely accurat. It's not a latin blessing but part of the transformation of bread into the body of christ (and the whine into the blood of christ) which is the most important part of the mass. Similar words are spoken when the prest hands out the bread to the people (Hoc est corpus christi).Back in the middle ages only educated people understood latin and latin was the only language used for the services. So to most of them the words of the prest sounded very secretiv and outlandish. And we all know what happens sometimes when we hear a strange language we don't understand at all: We may not hear the words corretly. That's why those holy words were turned into Hocus Pocus at some point. Which is actually kind of ironic since catholics opposed any kind of magic and started hunting witches. Some catholics even opposted the Harry Potter books when they came out because they are about witchcraft and magic.
Thank you for enlighting me. I saw about the last 5 minutes of this movie when I was a child (I remember the talking cat dieing) and know I finally know the name of the movie.
Idk if you noticed, but "Ice" is Larry from Buffy s2 & s3. At least he got a character arc in Sunnydale. He's the closeted and misogynistic bully who became decent after Xander accidently got him to come out in the first werewolf ep.
I heard that the reason why no one else can hear the cat speak is because only the ones involved in lighting the black flamed candle can understand him.
13:17 - The part with the black river when you said "c'mon, does it look like the water is moving?"...Well, actually as a kid I was thinking it could've been a black river of tar. A VERY SLOW moving river, but still haha. Also, just wanted to add to your point about child actors. Yes Dani (Thora Birch) is an excellent actress, but honestly growing up, almost every movie I remember had incredible child actors. I grew up on movies like The Goonies, A little Princess, Jumanji, Home Alone...even the kids in Hook were quite good. Of course you have the ones that stand out, but I do think the calibre of child actors were top tier especially in the 90s. Even TV shows. I grew up watching Joseph Gordon-Levitt on "3rd Rock From the Sun" for example. I don't watch many modern movies but I think you'll find that the more you watch older films, the more you'll realise how many talented child actors there were beyond the obvious (like Home Alone) :)
The term "Hocus Pocus," as I learned it, came from the days when all church services were conducted in Latin and only the clergy were educated enough to understand it. The priest would lift up the bread and say "Hoc Est Corpus Christi" - "This is the body of Christ" - and it (according to Catholics?) becomes the literal body. But to your average peasant, the priest says "Hocus Pocus Christi" and the bread magically turns into something else, so if YOU want to do magic, you say the same words.
Hocus Pocus is definitely in the line of Disney Channel Original Movies (before it was a thing) so this movie is more cult classic than "classic" classic. For want it is, it nails the fun of Halloween comedy. And the dramatically musically adept Sanderson Sisters deserve the place they have in the Disney Parks. The second one lacks the heart and a lot of the originality of the first one, but it is still campy and fun and probably will be a cult classic for the younger generation.
This is my all time favourite Halloween movie, and I genuinely loved the sequel, and I'm happy the moment the fans found out they were thinking of making a new one that they told Disney we'd not watch anything that didn't bring the original witches back! My sister who never saw the original as a child, liked the sequel more=)
I'ts such a fun and loved movie because it knows it's ridiculous but it goes all in on it and doesn't care. It sells it. And the witches, despite their comedic stuff, are also legitimately menacing. They can do what they claim.
When you think about it, the witches choosing to sing probably saved his high school reputation. Now, rather than the weird kid who panicked over a costume, he's the cool kid who introduced the mystery trio who were dressed as the witches, which was the most popular act of the night.
Me, I'm a bit jealous when I see everyone celebrating Halloween because in France, where I live, it's only a kids' thing and there's less and less kids who celebrate it
I adore this movie. As opposed to other comments, I think the sequel isn't great. But maybe because I'm such a fan of the first that anything was gonna be a disappointment. However, the 3 actresses are fantastic in their same characters in the sequel, but the plot and other characters are not great
I absolutely love this movie! Back in the day when Disney put adult jokes into the movies for the adults watching. The cast was just phenomenal in general! Have you ever seen Sister Act 1 & 2? Just a movie recommendation I thought you might enjoy.
omg omg omg this was the childhood halloween movie for me & tim mcgee from ncis is binx :( also the scream series is so much fun! (so long as you are a viewer & not Sidney)
i paused this and did something else for a bit now i'm finishing & the lil sis was Thora Burch she is mostly known for movies she did as a teen I just checked wiki & she's a year younger then me and also a pisces her most recent movie was just last year & oddly this WASN'T her first
My own version of Hocus Pocus: 1. Helena Bonham Carter as Winifred Sanderson 2. Aidy Bryant as Mary Sanderson 3. Margot Robbie as Sarah Sanderson 4. Judah Lewis as Max Dennison 5. Brooklynn Pierce as Dani Dennison 6. Mackenzie Foy as Allison 7. Johnny Depp as Billy Butcherson 8. James Spader as "The Devil" 9. Chris Hemsworth as the bus driver 10. David Harbour as Dave Dennison 11. Thora Birch as Jenny Dennison 12. Asa Butterfield as Thackery Binx Check this out: th-cam.com/video/YymXzH1G6Co/w-d-xo.html
I've started wondering about Winnie on the Hallowed Ground at the end. I THINK it's what turns then to stone. While the sunlight itself exploded them. And the reason it took a minute for her to start turning to stone had to do with the potion, as she was in the middle of it, before being interrupted.
@@a.g.demada5263The way they talk about it, it's implied they can't step even a SINGLE step on it. Yet Winnie gets about 2-3 minutes, and several steps. (Edit) And while it's indeterminable since the other didn't. You'd have to assume SOMETHING is delaying the effects, if they were saying the witches "can't set foot on Hallowed Ground."
Even when the witches make smart moves they don't think it through. They chose to resurrect a zombie as they couldn't touch hallowed ground. Yet they specifically chose an ex lover and the spell only brought him back. He still had free will and decided to fight against them. The sequel does have the same actors as the witches and they are still as good as they were all those years ago. I would describe it as a Halloween movie but definitely not a horror. Which works to its advantage making it family friendly. The sequel is good. Even if it doesn't beat the original it is still a good movie. Its best to just watch it and make your own opinion on it
The Sanderson sisters are definitely the kind of villains that are more likeable than the heroes.
Evil charisma off the charts!!
For sure. They are a delight on screen
Yeah. They just have so much more personality. And the witch actors clearly are just having so much fun with their roles.

Will you watch "Interview With The Vampire" once? With Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas and Kirsten Dunst. It would fits in October too. 😉
Love that one. I believe fans of the book hate Tom Cruise’s Lestat but I think it’s one of his best roles.

That spell-book is one of my favorite “ character “ or prop in this movie
There's committing for a role and then there's the three witches in this movie, beyond awesome. I haven't been able to hear I Put A Spell On You since childhood without thinking about Bette Midler.
you did a great job reacting to hocus pocus Thor you should react to the sequel next
You should definitely watch the sequel, I watched it and it's great.
Fun fact:
Did you know that the word Cob is Old English for Spider. So cobwebs literally means spider webs. Lob is also another Old English word for Spider. (Shelob means: She Spider)
When u watch the second movie, watch it right to the end, their a end credit scene
It was a kiln not a furnace. I just love it that Winnie absorbed the French to English tape.
Please watch the 2nd movie. The story is a bit weaker than the 1st, but the sisters come back to play, and they hit the ball out of the park.
the girl who played dani, thora birch, was in a lot of movies. she was a big child actor. my two favorites of hers are ghost world (with scarlet johanson and steve buchemi) and now and then which has a great cast and is kind of a girl version of stand by me.
Yes the sequel is also worth the watch for sure 😊
Thank you for enlighting me. I saw about the last 5 minutes of this movie when I was a child (I remember the talking cat dieing) and know I finally know the name of the movie.
You should now react to the sequel. It’s amazing.
Ice/Ernie is in Buffy too. He played Larry.
I believe Billy in this movie is also the great Doug Jones. He is in 2
Idk if you noticed, but "Ice" is Larry from Buffy s2 & s3. At least he got a character arc in Sunnydale. He's the closeted and misogynistic bully who became decent after Xander accidently got him to come out in the first werewolf ep.
Woo hoo thanks for the reaction!
I heard that the reason why no one else can hear the cat speak is because only the ones involved in lighting the black flamed candle can understand him.
Oh, that's interesting
I had such a crush on Binx when this came out. He was up there with Devon Sawa 😅
It irritates me so much that Max says Halloween was invented by the candy companies, haha. It’s just not true.
Me, I'm a bit jealous when I see everyone celebrating Halloween because in France, where I live, it's only a kids' thing and there's less and less kids who celebrate it
I’m not sure anyone ever recognises that thackary binx in human form is baby McGee from NCIS 😂
Just a movie recommendation I thought you might enjoy.
please watch the second Hocus Pocus it’s so good!!!
21:17 one year later. This place where max and co are right now was known for the intro in F.R.I.E.N.D.S on 1994.
omg omg omg this was the childhood halloween movie for me & tim mcgee from ncis is binx :(
also the scream series is so much fun! (so long as you are a viewer & not Sidney)
The sequel is actually pretty good!
i paused this and did something else for a bit now i'm finishing & the lil sis was Thora Burch she is mostly known for movies she did as a teen I just checked wiki & she's a year younger then me and also a pisces her most recent movie was just last year & oddly this WASN'T her first
Hocus Pocus 2 is not as good as the original, BUT it is still worth a watch because they do things a little different.
My own version of Hocus Pocus:
1. Helena Bonham Carter as Winifred Sanderson
2. Aidy Bryant as Mary Sanderson
3. Margot Robbie as Sarah Sanderson
4. Judah Lewis as Max Dennison
5. Brooklynn Pierce as Dani Dennison
6. Mackenzie Foy as Allison
7. Johnny Depp as Billy Butcherson
8. James Spader as "The Devil"
9. Chris Hemsworth as the bus driver
10. David Harbour as Dave Dennison
11. Thora Birch as Jenny Dennison
12. Asa Butterfield as Thackery Binx

I hope you check out the sequel sometime this month 😊 love your reactions
An icon of halloween!!
Billy Butcherson, not to be confused with Billy Butcher from The Boys
The last time I seen Danny was in the eat you alive music video from Limp Bizkit lol😂
I've started wondering about Winnie on the Hallowed Ground at the end. I THINK it's what turns then to stone. While the sunlight itself exploded them. And the reason it took a minute for her to start turning to stone had to do with the potion, as she was in the middle of it, before being interrupted.
Are you sure it's not because the witches can't walk on it because it's sacred or something loke that ?
Its best to just watch it and make your own opinion on it
This is my FAVORITE Halloween movie!!! My sister hates it, but she watches it once ay ear with me on Halloween. :) So glad you enjoyed it!!
Absolutely watch the sequel!!!!!
HP2 is great and good music.
I would say check out the sequel it's not quite as good but still worth the watch
