I put off watching this movie for years. I wanted nothing to do with it for the longest time. But I caved and watched it for the first time last year and I totally get why people love it so much. I get the hype.
The school where they tricked the witches didn’t have an incinerator, it was a large kiln in the art room for the large amount of ceramics and pottery students make in bulk for art class. Also this movie is one of my absolute favorites, I will watch it year round! And your intro was hilarious 😂😂

I love how the head sister turned to stone because she touched hollow ground but was the last to explode because she got a couple mouth fulls of Max's energy right there at the end.

Great funny movie that you never forget after seeing it as a child. Bette Midler is an absolute legend as Winifred, has had an amazing career. Won Golden Globes, Grammies, Emmies, Tony awards and nominated twice for best actress at the Oscars. They are currently filming Hocus Pocus 2, be interesting to see how that turns out.
Midler did an early 90s WW2 era movie 'For The Boys', its a light comedy drama about an elderly actress-singer recalling her time in Hollywood. Its incredible. I have mixed feelings about her now. She has ranted some outright racist crap recently.
I absolutely love movies like this when you can CLEARLY tell that the actors are having the time of their lives playing their characters 😂 It makes watching the movie 20 times more enjoyable! Lol
I always like how some of the characters, like the bus driver, and Lucifer and his wife, had North Shore Massachusetts accents. It’s a small touch, but made it more immersive and relatable watching as a kid
The fact that their harmonies and music is part of their spellwork is probably my favorite aspect of this entire movie. It's just original and amazing (and honestly a great way for Disney to incorporate the amazing writers and musicians they had back in the day- now it sucks, sorry! Them Frozen songs make me want to end myself lol) But mostly their harmonies genuinely feel like they could be part of the magic of the spell, especially when they're being hanged it sounds tbh kinda actually creepy af, and I think it's just a great concept for a fantasy about witches. Edit: Also, I love how each sister has her powers: Mary can smell children, Sarah can lore them in with her song, and Winifred control the book and is by far the most powerful of them. In ADDITION, I love that you're digging on SJP, because so many people are ass holes who call her ugly and she's totally not. It's not that everyone has to find her hot, it's more like people have always made fun of her nose, and man... she's JEWISH lmfao. I'm glad you liked the movie, glad you gave it a try, and glad you have great taste :)
The little girl who plays Dani is Thora Birch, and she actually did a film when she was older called THE HOLE that costarred Kiera Knightly! They’re peers. It’s a dark but good film.
this movie is so good, i dont usually like Disney's live-action stuff, but they blew it out of the park with this one, Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker were all fabulous with their performances and they sang like birds together.
Love Jason Marsden's role of Thackery Binx in this movie. He's the voice of Max Goof in A Goofy Movie and Haku in Spirited Away which are two very awesome animated movies.

Kenny Ortega went on to direct "This is It" 2009 & written by Mick Garris, who worked on Michael Jackson's Ghosts 1997, The Zombie Billy is Doug Jones who played Abe Sapien on Hellboy 1 & 2 and the fishman on Shape of Water & for whatever reason the Cat version of Binx is voiced by Jason Marsden, voice of Max Goof.
As you say, I love how heartwarming the ending is. Binx dies, but shows himself in his human body that he’s free from their curse, pretty much going through the gates of heaven as he reunites with his sister. 🥺

I don't know if you watch NCIS but Thackery Binx is played by Sean Murray (McGee), but Binx the cat is voiced by Jason Marsden whose voice you might recognize as Max Goof as well as many other Disney, Nickelodeon, Marvel & DC animated series, films & games. I remember Marsden most for his recurring role as Erik's friend in "Boy Meets World " and as J.T's best friend in "Step by Step".

Which, to me, come to think of it the pacing, budget and general feel of the movie has a 'Harry Potter' quality of production to it- LOADS of years before Potter was even a book series! XD
This movie is so nostalgic for me. I was 11 years old when it came out, and I've always loved it. However, there are a few scenes in which I believe the creators sort of dropped the ball, and those parts have always irked me (it's more like a disbelieving, "come on, really", with an eye roll) each time I've watched it. To be more specific, it's with the Sanderson sisters and their dialogue. So, this movie came out in (and was set in) 1993. The sisters had been "dead" (if that's what you want to call it) for 300 years, which would make 1693 the year in which they were hung. And that would make complete sense with how they speak (the antiquated "thy", and "thee" speech), and the fact that they know nothing about modern inventions such as lighters, tar paved roads, and public transportation (buses), but the areas in which I believe the creators dropped the ball are . . . #1. The scene where the sisters are singing "I Put a Spell on You" at the Halloween party. That song, "I Put a Spell on You," wasn't released until 1956, so if the sisters were hung in 1693 and didn't come back a single time until 1993, then there's no way they would know that song. They also wouldn't know anything about how microphones worked nor how "girl groups" performed (with backup singers doing choreograped movements). #2. In the scene where the kids are driving and Winifred flies up alongside the car on her broom and asks Max to see his driver's permit. Again, coming straight from 1693, she wouldn't know anything about driver's permits either. #3. The scene where Winifred calls Max "dude". And once again, she wouldn't know anything about that type of slang, coming directly from the time period that she did. There may also be more that I can't think of at the moment, but even with the inaccuracies with their knowledge of modern things, I still love this movie.
I've loved this movie since I was a kid. Watched it nearly every other year since. It's just a lot of fun and a great way to start off Spooky season. Also, that wasn't an incinerator in the school. It was a walk-in pottery kiln for their art department. You could see the clay pottery on the shelves. I've personally never seen one that big. My old school only had a small one that maybe 2 people could squeeze down into.
I was 9 when this movie came out (yes I'm old haha) but it was so iconic among kids back then (it didn't do well cause I guess it came out in the Summer or somewhere around then) but it definitely had a cult following with us 90s kids. This movie was actually kinda risque for a Disney movie back then (virgin talk, etc.) I hope the new one has the same spark!
This is peak Disney films back when they still did original well written movies. Bette Midler Sara Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy were absolutely killing those roles and having so much fun with the roles.

The little girl actually played in American Beauty w Kevin Spacey and Annette Benning... a movie that i would love to see you react to! If you're a movie lover its a must. I love this movie. I like the chemistry of the women. Bette Midler is awesome. She was great in The Rose, and Wind beneath her wings. The First Wives Club is a great Bette Midler movie. Sarah Jessica Parker is the young Witch. She is from Sex in the City series. She was in a Bruce Willis movie once.
I always thought Bette Midler had enormous bucked teeth until I saw other movies she was in haha. Ahh this is such a fun Halloween movie. Always saw this one every year with my family since I was a kid.
I love this film! I watched it sooooo many times as a kid, so much so that me, my sister and my best friend knew every single line to it and would act it out together! I still have to watch it every year around Halloween! So glad you enjoyed it and recognised it for what it is, a silly, over-the-top, funny and fun film. Bette Midler is so good in this, but all the cast played their parts well, with so much fun and silly energy.

However, there are a few scenes in which I believe the creators sort of dropped the ball, and those parts have always irked me (it's more like a disbelieving, "come on, really", with an eye roll) each time I've watched it. To be more specific, it's with the Sanderson sisters and their dialogue.
So, this movie came out in (and was set in) 1993. The sisters had been "dead" (if that's what you want to call it) for 300 years, which would make 1693 the year in which they were hung. And that would make complete sense with how they speak (the antiquated "thy", and "thee" speech), and the fact that they know nothing about modern inventions such as lighters, tar paved roads, and public transportation (buses), but the areas in which I believe the creators dropped the ball are . . .
#1. The scene where the sisters are singing "I Put a Spell on You" at the Halloween party. That song, "I Put a Spell on You," wasn't released until 1956, so if the sisters were hung in 1693 and didn't come back a single time until 1993, then there's no way they would know that song. They also wouldn't know anything about how microphones worked nor how "girl groups" performed (with backup singers doing choreograped movements).
#2. In the scene where the kids are driving and Winifred flies up alongside the car on her broom and asks Max to see his driver's permit. Again, coming straight from 1693, she wouldn't know anything about driver's permits either.
#3. The scene where Winifred calls Max "dude". And once again, she wouldn't know anything about that type of slang, coming directly from the time period that she did.
There may also be more that I can't think of at the moment, but even with the inaccuracies with their knowledge of modern things, I still love this movie.
I've loved this movie since I was a kid. Watched it nearly every other year since. It's just a lot of fun and a great way to start off Spooky season.
Also, that wasn't an incinerator in the school. It was a walk-in pottery kiln for their art department. You could see the clay pottery on the shelves.
I've personally never seen one that big. My old school only had a small one that maybe 2 people could squeeze down into.
I was 9 when this movie came out (yes I'm old haha) but it was so iconic among kids back then (it didn't do well cause I guess it came out in the Summer or somewhere around then) but it definitely had a cult following with us 90s kids. This movie was actually kinda risque for a Disney movie back then (virgin talk, etc.) I hope the new one has the same spark!

This is peak Disney films back when they still did original well written movies. Bette Midler Sara Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy were absolutely killing those roles and having so much fun with the roles.
I remember watching this movie every Halloween when I was a kid, they used to air it on the TV for quite many years in a row. And I definitely remember being just a silly dumb kid who didn't understand the meaning of being virgin, I always thought it was about the zodiac sign. 🤦🏻♀️

Oh, weird. I was just looking for info to answer my own question and I just found out that apparently they made a Canadian spinoff / sequel series called Eerie, Indiana: The Other Dimension. I'd never heard of it before now.

When Bette is singing she says to the audience "Hello Salem. My Name's Winifred, what's yours"? This is a reference to the musical Gypsy, which Bette Midler had recently starred in.
Also, both the leads were 17 at the time.

My fav Halloween movie as a kid. Bette Midler stole the whole show. The little girl actually played in American Beauty w Kevin Spacey and Annette Benning... a movie that i would love to see you react to! If you're a movie lover its a must. The acting, cinematography, directing etc was pretty different from anything else being done at that time. ✌❤

Definitely some darker moments for a Disney film, but it still stands the test of time and is a Halloween tradition in our house.

A sequel is coming out next year with the original three actors reprising their roles as the Sanderson Sisters :)

Funny story, in 6th grade we watched this movie for the first time in a couple years. I asked my woman teacher "What are 'yah-bo's?" In the middle of class.
I love this movie. I like the chemistry of the women. Bette Midler is awesome. She was great in The Rose, and Wind beneath her wings. The First Wives Club is a great Bette Midler movie. Sarah Jessica Parker is the young Witch. She is from Sex in the City series. She was in a Bruce Willis movie once.

I always assumed Zachary Binx had to re- learn how to talk with a cat mouth which is why he didn’t speak to his family.
I always thought that he could not speak till the black flame candle was lit again and the witches come back from the dead.
Remember, this came out the same year as Jurassic Park. It was a good year to go to the movies.
I always wondered why Binx didn’t talk to his family. My only guess is he had to learn how to speak in that form.
Or maybe he could only talk once the candle was lit.

I always thought Bette Midler had enormous bucked teeth until I saw other movies she was in haha. Ahh this is such a fun Halloween movie. Always saw this one every year with my family since I was a kid.
I love this film! I watched it sooooo many times as a kid, so much so that me, my sister and my best friend knew every single line to it and would act it out together! I still have to watch it every year around Halloween! So glad you enjoyed it and recognised it for what it is, a silly, over-the-top, funny and fun film. Bette Midler is so good in this, but all the cast played their parts well, with so much fun and silly energy.
I haven't seen this in so long. But I confess that even as a kid I wanted Binks as my cat.

(Somewhere around when I saw something mentioning that someone had recently written a book which acts as a sequel to this movie.) I still hear Zachary when his name is mentioned. But whatever.
