    The pause on releasing reactions to content struck by SAG-AFTRA is still in effect. The content featured in this post, according to our research, does not fall under any of the struck categories issued by SAG.
    This video was published during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, this episode of Fawlty Towers being covered here wouldn't exist. #SAGAFTRAstrike #SAGAFTRAstrong

      @@Mr_M_ Technically, but it's very limited. SAG-AFTRA did actually post guidance for TH-cam reactors, though I've not seen or read it. The reason why most reaction channels are still chugging along like normal is because they're ignoring it. Most aren't members of the union, don't plan to be, and aren't interested in showing any sort of solidarity. They're doing it for profit.

    • @garethlawton5278
      @garethlawton5278 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@willsofer3679 Well that's just it. We aren't part of the striking union. I am not in solidarity with people who are paid a much higher wage than me and are campaigning for better pay and job security. What exactly do I have in relation to stand in solidarity with them? People are still reacting because they rely on that income as they aren't paid SAG or WGA wages and can't afford to have a lul in income like the striking actors and writers can.

      I believe I recall hearing that there had been a large influx of construction laborers from Ireland into the UK in the 1970s, which led to an overall impression that Irish builders weren’t as skilled. There is no hint of that prejudice here, however; Sybil doesn’t dislike O’Reilly because he’s Irish. It’s because he’s “no bloody good.” And indeed the man seems more interested in standing around having tea and biscuits than doing the job - he hasn’t even finished the garden wall.
      Similarly, Manuel existed as a non-English-speaking server because Cleese observed that this was a hiring trend of the time by businesses looking to save money on cheap labor. As a character, though, Manuel doesn’t seem particularly quick on the uptake. That’s not saying anything about Spanish people generally, but about Manuel specifically. Characters are allowed to be flawed. And Basil is the most flawed of all of them, lest we forget.

    When you get to the Anniversary episode, make sure you switch in Cleese’s commentary track - he laughs so hard at the conclusion of the episode, it’s hilarious to hear.

    I wrote a show called DIe Kasteel (Afrikaans for The Castle) here in South Africa a few years ago. It was our rip off of Fawlty Towers. We made no secret of that. A farce set in a hotel. My writing partner got a chance to make it, and managed to convince me.
    It was SO HARD! Like, until you've done it, you can't understand how difficult it is. We each have 20 years of scriptwriting experience under our belts. We've run dramas, sitcoms and soaps. But this was the most difficult job we ever had. Writing farce is like scripting Math. Everything is so intricate, and has to be so well-timed, or it all falls apart. That's why I admire this show so much. It was the pinnacle of it's art form.

    Though it's a cliche to say it at this point, Fawlty Towers may indeed be the best British sitcom (and one of the top English language sitcoms) ever. Though only basically a handful of episodes by US standards, it really left a lasting impression across the decades. (Similar, if obviously different in context, to how Chappelle's Show left a mark on the half-hour sketch comedy programs despite also only being a relatively short number of episodes.)

    There's not too many old sitcoms that still hold up today well as this one does. John Cleese has exceptional comedic timing.

    David Kelly, the Irish actor who played Mr O'Reilly, loved appearing in the episode and thought it was hilarious. He didn't sound like that in real life but put on that accent for the episode. When people accused him of perpetuating stereotypes of Irishmen he would reply that no one criticised John Cleese for playing ludicrous Englishmen.

    8:35 - David Kelly who played O'Reilly said in an interview that the umbrella Pru Scales who played Sybil holds was filled with thick padding so when she hit them with it, it was supposed to not hurt. However the production didn't fit the padding properly and so when she hit them, it really hurt.

    Airing the 'PIlot' episode is a very American thing. Usually IF UK shows even make a 'pilot' episode, it isn't what we see (Sherlock is a good example, they released the pilot as a DVD extra). They usually film it, show it to the execs, then re-films a better, finished version.
    IF they do that at all. Most UK shows film everything (shorter series) before anything airs, like filming a movie.
    It's also why no UK shows call their first episode "pilot" as an episode title, unless they are making a joke.

    David Kelly, who played Mr O'Reilly the builder, appeared in a number of British sitcoms. Amusingly he later played "Wobbly Ron" in "Cowboys", a comedy series about a firm of inept builders. My strongest memories are of "Albert Riddle", the one-armed dishwasher (truly!) in "Robin's Nest" - an excellent actor.
