First time I've seen a handheld version of a game have more content than the console version. Feels like the 3ds version was built with love and care instead of settling for lowered settings to fit on a handheld.
Both versions of the game were clearly made by people who absolutely adore the series. They each have their own charm to them, but I was very surprised by the sheer wealth of content in the 3DS version.
IX pushed the ds to its limit its one of the reasons why u couldnt have multiple saves on one cartridge gotta admit i still can kick back into that game and i do own dqXi fucking love Stornway
I prefer the ps4 for the graphics, but not be able to see all the party members it's a let down, and the camera always looks too far away from your character, can you get the camera closer? In the 3ds version at least in dungeons looks like it's closer.
Even though I watched this video after I played through the PS4 version a while back. I really hope a lot of the 3ds versions make it to the switch, like having your party members follow you in the open world for example.
Its crazy how despite the hardware and power of the 3DS it still manages to hold it's weight and offers compelling enough features that makes it hard for you to choose which version to buy (if you could only choose one and... well if you live in japan where the 2 options are available)
I love the 3ds version just as much as the ps4 , the 3ds version is so charming and cute while the ps4 looks gorgeous, but i love how they basically remaked the whole game on the 3ds which would take way too much.
The 3DS is more kid friendly and they want the game to be far easier to navigate. I'm fine with not having this feature on the PS4 because it will give me actual time to just explore the world and it's nooks and crannies instead of having the ability to just land anywhere.
i wish the 3ds version was localized. the extra content seems really cool and idk if its just me but 3ds graphics and their somewhat jankiness is kind of charming to me, especially this game.
@@zeltingle Pffft.... well, it did return, but not in the way it was. in 3DS version, DQ1 and 4 dungeons were in 8-bit style, while DQ7-10 dungeons were in 3D... while in Switch version, all old DQ dungeons are in 2D, including the DQ7-10 dungeons. Mwahaha, i told you it's NOT a Definitive Edition, but nobody listened. ...*sigh* how long must i wait for a fan-translation...
Damn I wish the ps4 version included those throwback dungeons, but I can see why they wouldn't bother. Re-creating all of those dungeons in gorgeous HD would be very time consuming and costly. Still...just a casino minigame is disappointing.
The game was developed by 2 different studios so not likely but would be nice. If you want dungeons get Ni No Kuni 2 because that game is also awesome.

I like Heavenly Flight but I kinda wish we'd get newer tunes for DQ Games. I know Sugiyama is getting up there in age, and I can fully understand he's slowing down in terms of compositions. They used it in III, VIII and now XI. And they've used Sea Breeze (Ship) for DQIV, DQIX, and now XI. They're great compositions but a bit over used. And to play devil's advocate against myself, I understand this game is a celebration of classic DQ games so it's excusable.
I personally think this will be his final mainline Dragon Quest. I just hope that the new composer/s don't lose the charm that his music has had all these years.
Project COE Yeah, he had a great run though. And to his credit, Ishi, Castle Theme, Normal Overworld, Normal Towns, the Battle and Boss themes are among his greatest works. The Battle theme is probably his best one since DQVIII. I'd like to think he's been sifting to find a successor, and I think the composer who did Dragon Quest Swords would be a decent choice to succeed him, but we'll see. It's gonna be sad to see him go though.

The switch version clearly isn’t the same as the 3DS version , graphics , the extra dungeons,following party members, landing anywhere, more dialogue, 2d version(yes I’m aware switch has it) and I’m sure there’s more that the SWITCH version doesn’t have. There are some people who would even enjoy playing the game with the 3DS graphics proffered bc of the the specific style it’s made in and it could just be interesting to see all the cutscenes and how they were executed with the 3DS screens and how just different they may look (the switch has the PS4 graphical style) and many more things , so a 3DS version would be so appreciated and I couldn’t care less about the switch version

Number 2 is the reason I like 3ds more, I cleared yochi village AND got all the yochi hats, which took me clearing the "time traveling maze" about 16 times (glad I got a lot of s rank metal yochis in my VIP list)
A point to anyone learning Japanese: the 3D mode of the 3DS version has furigana over 90% of all of its kanji (all dialogue text, some menu text, no combat text), making it very readable if you know katakana and hiragana.
Heres hoping the 3ds version releases along the switch version later down the road. I have a switch but would rather play this game on 3DS. Something about the art makes the 3ds graphics better suited for me.
I will be exploring this game on the PS4. I do not own a Nintendo 3DS. I am so excited for this release in September. Watching this gameplay, I cannot wait.

Square Enix is simply genius. They said "why worry about trying to satisfy both audiences, when we can just satisy both audiences entirely?" They created DQ XI on the PS4, giving it a modern upgrade; it's the dragon quest that everyone has wanted on a current gen console. While on the otherhand, DQ XI on the 3DS shares many upgrades that the PS4 has, but caters towards the handheld players with the changed overworld and battle system. It's almost like playing two different games. Bravo SQEnix
I imported the Japanese version and it's always been like that no matter what I tried it will tell me to wait 5 minutes. Maybe there's an update online that removes it, I guess. However, at one point I even looked online in Japanese for help and guides on bypassing it.

I’m wondering if maybe that has something to do with it. The 3DS has the penalty regardless so this is quite curious.
dragonknightttt Just wanted to give you an update, a friend of mine said her pot would not allow her access for five minutes so clearly there is more to this story. The video footage here clearly shows the restriction was removed somehow. I either never tried during the main game and did something to remove it and therefore didn’t realize. Time to investigate! I've always wanted a game where I can go on an adventure with Android 17's son and SSGSS Goten Jr. So hyped for the PC version and the Inevitable fan translation of the 3ds ver.
That's a damn shame that the PS4 version doesn't have the retro areas.... I would really love to see them add those in via DLC or something, as I naturally want to get the PS4 version but don't want to miss out on all of that retro goodness either, specially being a huge fan of the series since the very first game.
As a long-time fan, those areas are incredibly special, but I understand why Square-Enix is putting all of their efforts into the PS4 version. They want to focus on only one version and they believe it has the greatest chance of bringing the series to new heights. I get that.

I think the cetacea being able to land anywhere was gonna implented on the PS4. Because if you can actually trigger a dialogue that says "It's not safe to land here, look for pillars of light..." Seems odd that is in the game considering you can only land on very specific spots

HelloFiora you'd still be able to read the stats for them numbers, and after playing through once you'd know all the items sprites and where to go as far as the story is concerned. You probably wouldn't have to much trouble playing it.
The PS4 and PC version does indeed have a penalty for quitting out during forging. Smoke will float out of the forge and you can't use it for 5 minutes.
#2 definitely seems like something that would be pulled for DLC or a later update to the PS4 and PC versions. Full games these days are much more than $60.
I'm wondering if the 3DS content will make its way to the Switch version due to both being Nintendo consoles etc. Would be nice though if they bring that extra content from the 3DS version to the west in form of DLC. I'm playing DQXI on PS4 and it's stunning I can only imagine how more beautiful it looks on PS4Pro.
How sad that america lost the 3ds version of DQ XI as well as the 3DS version of monster hunter generations ultimate. I assume we'll see a lot more of these while NOA completely lost interest in the 3DS but in japan the psvita is still getting love
That load screen jab was great:D Luckily the Steam version with a decent solid state hard drive should minimize that problem. I can see how PS4 users might get annoyed with that though. Also interestingly enough you can zoom indoors in the PS2 version of DQ5 but only in safe areas like towns. I'm not sure if it's like that in the DS version as I haven't played that one yet. Hopefully Deborah is worth playing that one.
I'm sure there are other little things I have missed just because of how much of this game I have played. I was SOOOO close to missing the zooming inside. It was really a fluke that I even did that, as I selected the wrong option haha.

The 3DS version will always be something special. Even with the Switch version hitting, I'm glad I got to experience the 3DS version and know that I will return to it again in the future. It's a true gem and one that we will talk about for years to come, especially since it won't ever officially come out in North American and Europe.
LOL I thought it's weird that you can Zoom from indoor locations in the PS4 version. The 3DS version has the text "you bumped into the ceiling" if you try that.
My guess is that the 3DS version has more content than the PS4 version because most games were on Nintendo systems while only 2 or 3 games got released on a Playstation consoles. Also Dragon Quest/Warrior is much bigger in Japan as well than it is in the west, meaning most gamers here have no real connection to the older titels in the series. Which could also one of the reasons why the 3DS version wasn't localized.
I don't know much about game development, but doesn't it cost them a lot of money to develop all these different versions? I hope they turn profit for their efforts.
Yes, this wasn't cheap. This is the very first time that I know of where one game had three completely different versions on day 1. A LOT of work went into developing this game.
I disagree with the blacksmith penalty. I messed up an item and loaded my save file. It said my hammering arm was tired and needed to try again in five minutes. This is on the PS4 version. Maybe this was changed in the western version.
I beg to differ because I own the ps4 version and it's loaded with a ton of great extra side missions even if it's not exactly like the 3ds version it's still great
Well when they release dq12 and hopefully it’s not region exclusive! It will have the graphics of dq11 ps/pc and the end game content of the 3ds/upcoming switch version. because I played on the pc while a great nostalgia trip of dq9 I did feel that the end game was a bit eh though the final boss was preety good too but after that there is literally nothing after Ps I may have another go at the slime quest game but ehh I got plenty of tokens with the other games
Wrong the PS4 has the 5 min black smith penalty. You can bypass this by making two different saves right before you use the tool. Then if you fail reload the FIRST save that you made.
May not even make it to the Switch because of adult content and rumor has it that SONY's PS4 may have locked up console exclusivity. So, The 3DS version was developed by a different studio and the Switch will likely get the 3DS version with beefier graphics.
#9 is wrong. PC version is the same as PS4 and the penalty is there. Although some of these differences are super peculiar. I wonder why some things are so different like how Zoom and flying works especially. Plus l wanna go to Trodain too! :(
I doubt we're getting 3ds but maybe it'll launch around switch port which was confirmed for 2019. I couldn't wait & bought it on steam holiday sale for 35$ playing on my PC to 4k tv. I'll buy it again for switch CE probably & just keep it sealed
We will find out all the details about Dragon Quest XI S (Switch version) on January 1st. That isn't too long to wait. I'm excited to find out when it will be released in Japan, and hope I won't be in school at that time.

now that the game is out in the west ( ps4 and PC version ) they could take their sweet times on making them and then release them as a free DLC.

Actually there is also Blacksmith penalty in PS4 version, and also says that please come back about 5 minutes later
Yes I added that to the video afterwards. There’s one blacksmith anvil that’s is penalty free for one round towards the end of the game.

Yeah I'm just wrapping up my third 100-hour play-through of the game actually. To think I get to do this all over again in September is just awesome. :D
Square Enix is simply genius. They said "why worry about trying to satisfy both audiences, when we can just satisy both audiences entirely?" They created DQ XI on the PS4, giving it a modern upgrade; it's the dragon quest that everyone has wanted on a current gen console. While on the otherhand, DQ XI on the 3DS shares many upgrades that the PS4 has, but caters towards the handheld players with the changed overworld and battle system. It's almost like playing two different games. Bravo SQEnix
Unfortunately, the penalty for the blacksmith machine is actually in the Japanese PS4. I've done it many a times and get penalized.
? Are you certain about this, as the footage you're seeing was a reload, and there was no penalty.
I imported the Japanese version and it's always been like that no matter what I tried it will tell me to wait 5 minutes. Maybe there's an update online that removes it, I guess. However, at one point I even looked online in Japanese for help and guides on bypassing it.
dragonknightttt Very interesting as I never experienced that and the video you’re seeing shows precisely what happens when I fail and reload a save file. Have you done all the post game? I’m wondering if maybe that has something to do with it. The 3DS has the penalty regardless so this is quite curious.
dragonknightttt Just wanted to give you an update, a friend of mine said her pot would not allow her access for five minutes so clearly there is more to this story. The video footage here clearly shows the restriction was removed somehow. I either never tried during the main game and did something to remove it and therefore didn’t realize. Time to investigate! No thank you. You may be on to something because I haven't finished the main game yet. I know I'm horrible, right? I'm at the point in game after defeating the monster in the portrait who entrapped souls. I've really been taking my time with this game I guess. Great video! That's a damn shame that the PS4 version doesn't have the retro areas.... I would really love to see them add those in via DLC or something, as I naturally want to get the PS4 version but don't want to miss out on all of that retro goodness either, specially being a huge fan of the series since the very first game.
As a long-time fan, those areas are incredibly special, but I understand why Square-Enix is putting all of their efforts into the PS4 version. They want to focus on only one version and they believe it has the greatest chance of bringing the series to new heights. I get that.

This video just makes me wish the 3DS version was getting localized, but perhaps it's time I finally learn to read Japanese. Even though I think it's unlikely, perhaps the 8bit version will be unlockable for the Switch version? I'd really like that.

I can almost guarantee the Switch version will have the added content from the 3ds version, most likely as a way for Square to apologise for screwing us over and not giving us the 3ds version in the west.

Because if you can actually trigger a dialogue that says
"It's not safe to land here, look for pillars of light..."
Seems odd that is in the game considering you can only land on very specific spots

When the games comes in September, and if I play the game super hard and 100% it, you think it would be easy to catch on if I get the 3DS version? But then again I could’t read the items....
I'm sure you would have a good idea of what to do, if you took some notes, or if you use the PS4 version as a reference.
HelloFiora you'd still be able to read the stats for them numbers, and after playing through once you'd know all the items sprites and where to go as far as the story is concerned. You probably wouldn't have to much trouble playing it.

The PS4 and PC version does indeed have a penalty for quitting out during forging. Smoke will float out of the forge and you can't use it for 5 minutes.

#2 definitely seems like something that would be pulled for DLC or a later update to the PS4 and PC versions. Full games these days are much more than $60.
I'm wondering if the 3DS content will make its way to the Switch version due to both being Nintendo consoles etc. Would be nice though if they bring that extra content from the 3DS version to the west in form of DLC. I'm playing DQXI on PS4 and it's stunning I can only imagine how more beautiful it looks on PS4Pro.
How sad that america lost the 3ds version of DQ XI as well as the 3DS version of monster hunter generations ultimate. I assume we'll see a lot more of these while NOA completely lost interest in the 3DS but in japan the psvita is still getting love

Yeah it's the fifth party member that's exclusive to the 3DS version. You get it as a reward for finishing off the final super boss.

That load screen jab was great:D Luckily the Steam version with a decent solid state hard drive should minimize that problem. I can see how PS4 users might get annoyed with that though.
Also interestingly enough you can zoom indoors in the PS2 version of DQ5 but only in safe areas like towns. I'm not sure if it's like that in the DS version as I haven't played that one yet. Hopefully Deborah is worth playing that one.
I'm sure there are other little things I have missed just because of how much of this game I have played. I was SOOOO close to missing the zooming inside. It was really a fluke that I even did that, as I selected the wrong option haha.
Why would us PS4 users be annoyed with that? You do realize that we can use solid state drives as well correct? Or are you one of those that consider PS4 owners peasants?
Not to mention that the loadtimes are super short, even w/o an SSD.

I couldn't add an annotation, but there is no penalty for the last blacksmith anvil, if you fail once. No idea why I thought it was permanent.

The 3DS version looks so ambitious! Wish it came to the US. Still, the Switch version will be just as good.
The 3DS version will always be something special. Even with the Switch version hitting, I'm glad I got to experience the 3DS version and know that I will return to it again in the future. It's a true gem and one that we will talk about for years to come, especially since it won't ever officially come out in North American and Europe.

LOL I thought it's weird that you can Zoom from indoor locations in the PS4 version. The 3DS version has the text "you bumped into the ceiling" if you try that.
My guess is that the 3DS version has more content than the PS4 version because most games were on Nintendo systems while only 2 or 3 games got released on a Playstation consoles. Also Dragon Quest/Warrior is much bigger in Japan as well than it is in the west, meaning most gamers here have no real connection to the older titels in the series. Which could also one of the reasons why the 3DS version wasn't localized.

Yes, this wasn't cheap. This is the very first time that I know of where one game had three completely different versions on day 1. A LOT of work went into developing this game.

I disagree with the blacksmith penalty. I messed up an item and loaded my save file. It said my hammering arm was tired and needed to try again in five minutes. This is on the PS4 version. Maybe this was changed in the western version.
I beg to differ because I own the ps4 version and it's loaded with a ton of great extra side missions even if it's not exactly like the 3ds version it's still great

Well when they release dq12 and hopefully it’s not region exclusive! It will have the graphics of dq11 ps/pc and the end game content of the 3ds/upcoming switch version. because I played on the pc while a great nostalgia trip of dq9 I did feel that the end game was a bit eh though the final boss was preety good too but after that there is literally nothing after

Wrong the PS4 has the 5 min black smith penalty. You can bypass this by making two different saves right before you use the tool. Then if you fail reload the FIRST save that you made.

May not even make it to the Switch because of adult content and rumor has it that SONY's PS4 may have locked up console exclusivity. So, The 3DS version was developed by a different studio and the Switch will likely get the 3DS version with beefier graphics.
#9 is wrong. PC version is the same as PS4 and the penalty is there. Although some of these differences are super peculiar. I wonder why some things are so different like how Zoom and flying works especially. Plus l wanna go to Trodain too! :(

We will find out all the details about Dragon Quest XI S (Switch version) on January 1st. That isn't too long to wait. I'm excited to find out when it will be released in Japan, and hope I won't be in school at that time.
