Ford Lightning vs Rivian R1T | Which EV Truck Is Right For You?

  • Which EV truck is the best? While not the first EV truck in America, the Rivian and Lightning are the first EV trucks designed for regular truck duty. (Yes, I'm throwing a bit of shade at the insanely fun and cool Hummer EV). Both offer high payload ratings, both offer around 10,000 pounds of towing ability, both seat 5 and both have a frunk. One however is a regular truck with a battery and some motors while the other is an off-road luxury truck and there are pros and cons to both approaches.

Hi Alex, just a small clarification. The onboard air compressor on the Rivian has it's own standalone compressor. The air suspension has it's own air supply.

My own money was on the line and I went with the F150, honestly could not be happier. The 80A charger comes with the extended range truck, so only had to pay for install. It is worth it. I have seen some Rivians around and their owners seem to love their choices too. So both great trucks.

Heated & cooled front seats, heated rear seats. 9.6 kw power which includes the 240 voltage 30 amp 7200 watt twist lock receptical. 10 - 120 volt - 20 amp recepticals. Enough power to run a home that's daily usage is 30 kwh or less. 9600 watts will run a lot of appliances and 131 kwh battery will power those appliances for a long time.

I have absolutely fallen in love with the rivian. I get mine in a few weeks. I like the company's vision, it fits in my garage, has gear guard, gear tunnel, variable air suspension, motors on each wheel, incredibly comfortable interior, exceptional handling and power, overall luxury feel, and it doesn't look like every other truck on the road. It is an amazing vehicle.

As of right now, each of these vehicles is effectively unobtainium; the only difference is that the F150 is expensive unobtainium, whereas the Rivian is STUPID expensive unobtainium. How about service availability? Do all Ford dealers handle repairs on the Lightning? There are very few Rivian service centers (22 in the US, with 5 in CA, but none in many states), so if you need to get that tonneau cover repaired, how easy will it be to do so? It sounds like there was a suspension recall that was a very easy fix, but if I have to drive 2 hours or more to get to a service center, it's not so convenient to get something fixed. I'm also concerned about Rivian's long-term viability, but Amazon's contract alone should keep them afloat while they build up their support network.
I like the idea of the Rivian and what they did with it (except for those oval headlights), but my money would be on the Lightning. It's a great truck if you need a truck, especially for truck things that the F-150 has been the leader in for a good long time. There's definitely a draw for a truck like the Rivian, especially for those that have outgrown their Outbacks. The Rivian is a cool product, but it's way too new to gamble my hard-earned money on.
As the Shark Tank investors say all the time, "what are you doing that the other companies can't do and squash you like a cockroach?" Ford has said that they're going to be building a new EV truck in Tennessee, and my guess is that it will be aimed at the same market as the Rivian that they are already (lightly) tapping into with the Maverick. The Bronco brand has off-road credibility, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if they came out with a Bronco-branded EV adventure vehicle in truck and SUV forms.
I believe that if Ford thought Rivian was doing something they could not, they would have bought out the entire company and absorbed the R1T into their lineup. It's probably cheaper to compete with their own product offering and push Rivian into the history books. I hope the best for Rivian, but I think it's long-term survival is very questionable. At best, the Rivian is a 3-year lease to minimize its risks.

The Rivian is a luxury SUV or CUV with the roof removed from the third row and storage. It is not a pickup truck, it is a toy. Don't get into the Rivian with your oil-stained jeans after working on a farm vehicle - that faux suede will never clean. The Lightning is most of the way to the same impracticality, but it has some working truck features. Neither is useful for me. I can't take either to the gravel pit and have them drop a front-end load of gravel in the bed. I can't put 72 sheets of 1/2" by 4' by 8' sheet rock in either of them. I can't put a cord of wood in either of them I have done all of these things with a 1977 Ford F-250. Sure, I got 12mpg whether I was driving loaded or empty. But I did so for 350,000 miles and I doubt these will last as long. When it comes to carbon emissions, it won't be until these reach 60,000 miles that these two vehicles will have produced equal carbon as my old F-250 at that mileage. The carbon released in the production and shipping starts them at 20 tons already sent into the atmosphere. If you add the power generation to charge the Rivian or Lightning they will only be 20% less by the time they hit 100,000 miles. Just getting the materials for their batteries requires mining and processing 250 tons of minerals and rock. I'm sure these are great for dilettantes and faux environmentalists - but not for me.

Sir, you have a LOT to say in these comments for not having a clue about the vehicles. Rivian does have regenerative braking too, the two trucks get very similar efficiency numbers both on the highway at sustained speeds and also around town.

The price comparison is not accurate. For the specs you mentioned (835 hp) the minimum you’d need to spend if you were to buy a Rivian R1T TODAY would be $87,000

That vampire drain is unacceptable. Using ~30kw of capacity in 2 weeks doing nothing? Someone needs to do the math and see if that 30% efficiency gets cancelled out because of this. That drain probably happens whether you use it or not so you have to put it back in the battery pack somehow.

Went to pick up my platinum lightning last night these seats are no longer built. Which is a load of crap since the platnium upgrade was 10k+ all ford did was give a $300 credit. Terrible from a customer retention and satisfaction perspective.

The problem is when these trucks start to age, who is going to do the repairs? At least with ford you have the whole dealer network at your disposal, and with rivian.. well, as a brand new start up and no dealer support, plus with already having that massive recall… I’d put my $$ on the ford. I’m curious to see which one Alex is planning on keeping!

It blows my mind to think that someone would spend $80,000 to buy a gadget loaded truck from a company that has never built a truck before when they could spend a similar amount to buy a truck, perhaps not as gadget filled, from a company that has built millions of trucks and has the know how that is only gained from experience. Where is the dealer you can take your Rivian to when you have problems and you certainly will have them? I can take my F-150 to my local dealer who has a thoroughly equipped service department with highly trained service specialists.

Funny how that "under 40K" Lightning Pro now stickers out at $55K (with no options added), plus requires another $10-15K dealer extortion fee to actually drive it home. I'll keep driving my ICE F150 Lariat until Toyota starts selling a hybrid Tacoma in a year or so, buy it for $20-25K less, then own it for far less than these overpriced PEV trucks.

The Rivian truck bed is all plastic . It definitely is not the hard working truck bed . I feel like if your going to use your truck as a truck , I put all kinds of stuff in my truck. And feel like a plastic bed is not going to do it . At least in Texas will turn white and crack

  • @BumbleBeeJBG

Am I the only one who cares about the actual ability to use these as 4x4s? I wouldn't buy an F150 Lightning to see how well it could rock crawl but doing it on a Rivian is new and exciting. Frankly the Range Rover is too expensive and the Grand Cherokee is a bit underwhelming when you have the 4-Door Wrangler sitting right there in show room. You don't see too many 2022 Grand Cherokees out in hard spots for a reason. Punctuating the review comparing it as the "truck" version of these I think misses the point.
I feel like in spirit it's better to compare the R1T to a Gladiator Rubicon than it is a truck version of the Grand Cherokee and Ranger Rover. If you were an alien without human emotion you'd find the latter logical but the human emotion side of me just sees it as a very poor cross-shopping reference.
The R1T is a more compelling off-roader on many levels than the Hummer EV which set out with the specific goal of being the most "ultimate off-road machine ever" and is being sold starting at $70k for the next few years instead of $115k+ that the Hummer goes for.
The F150 is the better work truck, hands down. If that's what you need in your life in a light duty truck, that's what you should get. For almost any other application, including very picky off-roaders, the R1T is an absolute steal @ $70k for the quad-motor and will probably be equally as so when it's $70k for the dual motor. The things the Ford does better is not worth the $90k you're going to have to pay to get that trim. Not over the advantages the Rivian offers.
