Thanks Tom for your very through analysis. I am still happy to have a Lightning on order. I test drove the Rivian, but it was too much of a high off-road vehicle for me. I am looking for a practical on-road vehicle and am glad that you and Munro Associates really like it!
Hello people from US, i'm currently in the market for such pick-up in Europe (i love all of them specially Rivian), my question is : will any of these ever sell in here ?..
As a Lightning owner, I am glad to see it get the win, but the Rivian is a very compelling product. If it met my needs (mainly bed size and rear seat room), I would likely have gone that route. Very interested to see where the company goes in the future.
I have the same Lightning as you Tom. This video makes me even more happy with my purchase. Plus, I installed the Intelligent Home Backup System a couple of months ago and it works “as advertised”. Ford 👍🏼
Great review thanks! I'm waiting for delivery of my 2023 Lightning Lariat. As someone who is going to use this for my small renovation company and as a daily driver, I think it ticks the boxes for me. However, I do agree that all these vehicles (and others coming out) have benefits to suit a person's needs. I always laugh when people say "durpa durp durp this is garbage! What about towing my camper across the country?" To which I reply "Friend, maybe these aren't the vehicle for you"
Great video as always. My Lariat is scheduled for production week of Dec 19. Hope Ford is actively trying to get these in customers’ hands by year end for the potential tax credit. Keep up the great work.
Re ride - I can’t agree more. I owned an r1t and a lightning and the lightning is on another leveI ultimately kept the rivian but the lightning is lush and a 70s caddy definitely comes to mind. So quiet so lush. It’s def the road tripping champ
Very good review Tom. Final ranking can depend on our own priorities. But as far as your rationale for each category, it makes sense and seems fair. Great video !
This is a awesome video. I have ordered most EV trunks but for now I will be going with a Power Boost. I am in a rural area and no charging network. I also need a truck that can tow now.
The power boost is a great truck. I would've got one if I was going to do a lot of long distance driving. Our charging infrastructure just isn't there yet for all electric. But all my driving is done locally and can charge at home so I bought a lightning platinum. It will tow 10,000 lbs and even though the platinum payload has been reduced because of the trucks extra weight it's plenty for my needs because anything really heavy I hook up my trailer. I guess one of my favorite things about an EV is no more gas stations, no more ICE maintenance. 9.6 kw generator that also doesn't require any gas. That said, EV's certainly aren't for everyone.
I'm surprised you talked about frunks but failed to mention the Rivian gear tunnel (and potentially the tanto cover). That gives the Rivian more lockable waterproof space than any of the others.
Rivian halted the problematic powered tonneau cover production and there are plenty of tonneau cover options for the Ford..... and the gear tunnel is a poor substitute for a frunk, when it comes to ease of loading and unloading...
Excellent comparison based on categories chosen. Regarding the Hummer charging curve, I agree the software is unfinished. The oscillations in power look like the battery is overheating so power is reduced until cooled, then higher power is applied. It’s an on/off function instead of a variable automatic adjustment based on battery temperature. They need a linear ramp down in charge power as the battery reaches a high state of charge.
The F100 is the clear winner for me. It did everything that a truck needs to do, it only lost out on things like the sound system, & sports car handling, & came second to the Hummer's for the sunroof (even though it's more practical).
Great comparison review, however I felt the Rivian’s gear tunnel should have been included in one of the storage categories, frunk or bed. It obviously would still have finished 2nd, but it is a nice feature that the other two don’t have.
Yet another thoughtful and fair assessment. I am not an off-roading person and bought the truck for luxury (at least that is what I thought it would be) which is why I have the lightning Lariat trim. It makes the most sense for me. Glad I feel like I have the best of the three. I was wondering what you thought about Lordstown. I was considering waiting for it but I just stuck with Ford. How can you go wrong. 😊.
Great comparison and something I’ve been waiting for. I’d still probably go with the R1T since my primary reason would have been off road and it’s the strongest in that category. If I can also offer my unsolicited 2 cents about the rating, if you assign marks, say 3 points for first place, 2 for second and 1 for last across each category then when you add them all up it may more easily communicate which one is first second and third. You did allude to that when you said the R1T was second in most of those categories but before you made the point it felt weird that it and the hummer were equal.
Great video, love the indepth comparisons of all 3 E-trucks on the market right now. Really enjoyed the vast amount of information and definitely the best video of its kind I have seen so far.
Tom, thanks for comparison. I agree VERY large packs attached to VERY inefficient vehicles need OBC rated for 80 amps, and owners may want to consider getting dedicated 80 amp circuit, but for most people, a 50 or 60 amp circuit is sufficient. I hope you stress this more because for majority of EV drivers (M3 and MY are majority today in USA), the car is efficient enough that 8 hours of charging (while sleeping at night) at 16 amps feeding car will replenish over 100 miles of range, more than adequate for most people. That being said, 32 amps feeding car is over 200 miles of range in 8 hours of sleeping. 400 amp home service is way overkill for almost anyone and just about anyone with 100 amp or 125 amp service has panel space and spare load capacity to add a 20 amp (16 amp EVSE) EV circuit, if not load share a 30 amp dryer circuit using a smart splitter. To get more people into EVs we need to be honest about EVSE needs vs wants, which I know you understand. When I exhibit my lowly e-Golf at car shows I always talk about daily replenishment and not focus on maxing out OBC. Granted, the Hummer is woefully ravenous.
@@0HOON0 The battery is more like 222 kWh Gross... Everyone is speculating the numbers based on what they see(and charge losses) and no one is actually looking at the specs of the Cells... If you look at that and do the calculations it is around 222.
Thanks Tom. I am happy with my R1T. I am looking to put some running boards on it so my short wife will be happier with entry. Fun to be on the leading edge of electric pickups.
Thanks Tom. Fair and comprehensive review. The only place we might agree to disagree is the ADAS. I think it's important to mention that you can't even activate GMs Super Cruise on most roads. That's an important mention if, like me, you don't do a lot of highway driving.
Definitely a review focused on work truck capabilities. Ford wins hands down. That’s the market they already own. R1T and Hummer are a niche market for people that don’t plug a welder and table saw into their vehicle. Things like comfort and fit and finish are a more important consideration for a lot of buyers. The top trim package for the Lightning and R1T are in the same price range, but the specs clearly favour the R1T. The smaller size of the R1T is also a plus for a user that just needs a 5-passenger truck to fit in the garage for charging.
Great comparison video, Tom. I agree with you in most of the categories. I would select the Lightning because it seems to be more focused to existing truck owners. I like the roof capability of the Lightning much more than the other two. I really don’t see any advantage (for me) of the removable roof panels on the Hummer and I like to be able to close out the sun. Unfortunately, the biggest drawback of all of these is range and time to recharge when going long distances. Towing with an EV really seems to reduce range significantly (based on other TH-cam reviews on the Rivian and Lightning). Price is still too high as compared to ICE and diesel trucks. With increasing interest rates it becomes a greater challenge for many people who need a truck for small businesses.
As much as I want a Rivian or Lightning truck I refuse to pay their price hikes. They basically took away our Federal tax credit and that stinks! I appreciate the work you put into your videos! The Hummer may have finished last but it's always been a good looking design.
This guy either has shares in ford, or got bought out. The lightning wasn’t even built from the ground up to be an Ev. Wait until the Silverado comes out and probably the ram. It will make this ford lightning look like the half step it truly is. Rivian is by far the best out of these 3.
He only compared the Trucks available at the time of comparison. So the Silverado is irrelevant. Also, there's inherently nothing wrong with being based on existing architecture. If it works, it works. He gave his criteria for his decision. But in think that in other areas the decision comes down to personal preference.
I'd go for a lightning. Cheapest of the 3 and honestly it's not to bad. For only 3k you can get the 302A package and it's got tons of stuff for convince
What about the ergonomics? I have had both GM and Ford vehicles and the GM were the clear winners. As the sports car magazine writers used to say, the GM controls “fall readily to hand”, while I was always reaching or stretching to get to a frequently used switch or button on the Fords. For a daily driver, how comfortable the controls are to use is a major issue in how much I like a vehicle.
I would believe the weight of the Hummer, about 2,000 pounds heavier than the R1T, would be the deciding off-road factor giving the R1T the win. The weight really effects the Hummer's performance. See TFLEV taking the Hummer off-road.
You'd think that would be the case, but in reality it can be different. I have excellent front visibility out of my 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe. Must have something to do with the almost vertical windshield.
They must have done some updates because my new 2023 Hummer starts in the 300s with DC charging starting at around 20% SoC and will hold 220-180 all the way to 80%, where it will dive to like 70-80kW for 80-90 and lower from 90-100.
I’m waiting for the Ford Explorer electric, however the F150 lightning is very tempting. But $90,000 is ridiculous. Hoping the Explorer electric comes in under $70,000
Thanks, Tom. Excellent. The only thing you were missing for me is interior roominess. I have an R1S on order, but I have now sat in one and didn't find it too comfortable (currently a Model Y driver, so wondering if I might change). I'm 6''3" and my son is 6'5" so leg room is key. My wife's Range Rover is TERRIBLE on that front. How's the Lightning relative to seat comfort and leg room? Thanks!!
I'm in my first week owning 2023 lightning, and so far, it's great and fun to drive, but it isn't worth the $107K price that I stupidly paid. Anyway, my only concern is finding a charging station! I'm still panicking and struggling to find a fast DC charging.
I like the videos you produce and this is a nice comparison video. I do, however, disagree on one thing. Does the Hummer EV have sun shade panels to block sunlight if it starts getting too hot? And then if you do remove the panels you've got to put them somewhere, like in the frunk, taking up space and being a little annoying having to do that. I think the F150 actually wins in the roof category.
GM didn't have the 19.2 kW Charger ready for the Hummer when it was in development. That charger was ready with the Lyriq, the 2024 Hummer EV will get the 19.2 kW charger.
You read my mind .... They are also in a partnership to add a bidirectional charging.... Which Lucid is also working on..... So I'm looking forward to seeing a future comparison test.....
Yeah, I know. But I can't review what it doesn't have. IMO, there is no excuse for a $110K truck with a 212 kWh battery not to have a proper way to charge it for daily use. 14-15 miles per hour is so 2010.
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney Yet no one is going to drain it all the way to 0 every single day (outside of rare and specific reasons)... We know this...
To each their own..... But for such an inefficient EV with such a large battery pack, a 19.2 kW capable onboard charger, should be standard equipment.... So, GM should have delayed the launch, until it was available, IMHO....
@@nc3826 They had the equipment they needed for the launch, they had the system validated, it is workable for people to charge at home for every day drivers especially with the average miles driven. Yes it could have been delayed but them people be mad about that. Well in any case you can get it on the EV3X start of next year.
Best use case for the Hummer is if you make Hollywood macho action films. Ford did a good job but with that big a battery pack, should be able to do at least 250 kW peak DC fast charge.
I have some questions. They are serious ones from my point of view but the EV industry seems to be overlooking. If I ask them in a public forum I might be exposing myself as dumb. Do you have any way that I can ask you questions directly?
Hey Tom, my Ford dealer in Billings, Mt. Sold me a new lightning but won't let me pick it up because it won't charge!? Any ideas? Obviously they have no clue and I'm bummed...
Well, first congratulations on the Lightning. Sorry to hear about this issue. I wonder if there is a shipping mode or something that needs to be turned off. The vehicles are checked - and charged at the factory, so it's strange that it would arrive at the dealership and not be able to accept power.
@State Of Charge thank you! I'm sooo excited. I have been watching your videos non stop obsorbing all the info and I love it! Shipping mode...interesting. I was thinking a bad cell in a battery might cause this? IDK I hope Ford can help them figure it out soon! Thanks again!
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney When the Lightning arrived at our dealership, we just plugged it in. I'm wondering what the issue is with his. It's most unusual. However, Ford usually will QUICKLY assist us if we have a new product and a new purchase that has a problem. They'll even send a field service engineer to assist us within a few days. Hopefully they'll resolve this QUICKLY.
I guess it depends how you use your truck but I would definitely give the number one spot for charging to the lightning. For me, 99% of the time I charge from home. With 16miles per hour, the Hummer would be last place for me by a country mile. I could careless how fast their DC charging ever might become for the few times I would use it. That is over 6hrs to get a 100miles. That is unacceptable... I don't understand how you can even consider that to be the best charging when the bulk of charging is done at home.
Hello Tom when you will do the charging analyzes for VW ID4 made in US? It has 170 kw charging capability and a lot of people want to know if is true or not...
The reason I asked you about this is nobody did it and I am waiting for my ID4 delivery( I am not sure if to buy it or not). Having a car which can charge in 18 min or 40 min makes the difference. Thanks for your answer!
The Out of Spec Studios in-depth video of the camp speaker for the Rivian definitely documented that it would not bind with the stereo system of the vehicle so unless that is changed, I don’t understand the comparison of that with the Hummers tailgate speakers, which are obviously associated with the stereo of the vehicle?
That Hummer looks like a bad day at the design office. I think pedestrian safety is no issue with that open arches. And really 240kWh batteries?! Get real.
This hogging is the same reason why in some condos where there is no individual billing for utilities is bad for the conservative users and the environment. There are the people who don’t give a F and will waste power and water.
Without having the data but I’m willing to bet rivian picks up the W for charging and would give it the edge over the hummer. Hummer imo should not be the winner at all, it’s just a weird concept for a EV.
I would say the rivian roof wins. Sure it needs a blind but that can be added aftermarket. Opening sunroofs are just leaks waiting to happen and make the car far weaker in a crash. The hummer roof is just stupid and adds massive amounts of weight to the already overweight vehicle. With such big packs and such low max charging rates they all have poor charging systems. Hopefully that can be fixed with software. You should be able to hit 3C. The lighting and rivian are great first EV trucks and hopefully the next models can find ways to double the battery capacity and cut weight. The hummer is a joke and hopefully GM go bankrupt for good this time
My recommendation is a 1993 Chevy Silverado…….. 😆 Aaaannnndd, the EV Sedan/SUV daily driver of your choice. If you don’t use a truck professionally and only need the capability occasionally, you’ll save a bunch of money. You’ll also have a backup vehicle if one or the other goes down and access to both fuel sources.
Good luck with that wish, but ICE vehicles catch fire much more often...For example. Hyundai just had to recall ICE vehicles....Due to them, catching fire.... Nothing is perfect in this world....
Anyone who has to defensively state, that they do not have "crippling insecurity", are obviously a pointless troll, to be pitied.... Good luck with that.....
@B.L.A. Just look at fords F150 track record. This being fords first all electric truck. Do you honestly think ford didn't build it as good or even better than they have their F150. And the fact that ford is determined to eventually go all electric. Common sense says the lightning is probably the best F150 that fords built to date. If you can't see that, you are obviously just not a ford person. But if you're even considering an all electric truck. Best you look into BUILT FORD TOUGH.
Why??? Lightning proves from an engineering standpoint, that the bespoke architecture meme, serves no useful purpose.... Other than for marketing.... and fwiw ford uses bespoke elements, where they make sense, such as its ladder frame.... but it shares other parts, saving money...
@@nc3826 I don’t think you care about my answer nor will you agree with it even if you read it. So in light of that I will refrain from commenting. It’s just my opinions.
This is bogus. You are comparing a work truck with two off-road trucks, as though they were all work trucks. Doesn’t matter that they are electric. You are comparing apples to an orange. I get it. You aren’t an off-roader. So what? You are comparing a road truck to two off-road trucks, and you dramatically skew the criteria toward the road/work truck category. So guess which truck wins? Give me a break.
This is legitimate comparison because very few truck buyers only do off-road. Most truck buyers do off-road, working, and general transportation. Clearly, they don’t buy two trucks, one specialized for each function. If you look closely at how Americans often use pick-up trucks, a majority of miles driven could be done with a sedan (ie, shopping, visit grandma, commuting, etc).
@@johnpoldo8817 Some trucks are designed to perform well off-road. Some aren’t. The market segment that the Rivian and Hummer were designed for-optimized for-isn’t seriously considered here. If it were, the Ram TRX and Ford Raptor would have been included. You can compare anything to anything. But market segmentation is a real and meaningful thing. It has been largely ignored here.
@@williamelkington5430 These are the only 3 all electric trucks on the market today. It's a comparison of 3 all electric trucks. Which actually shows exactly what you said. For off road driving the Rivian and Hummer win hands down but for regular driving and comfort the lightning wins hands down. So I'm not sure your comments about how these 3 trucks were compared to each other mean much of anything. GREAT COMPARISON VIDEO. THANKS!
@@pstoneking3418 Propulsion system and market segment are different considerations. Yes, you can compare products with other products outside their market segment. But to what end? What is the point? How does doing so illuminate anything? You can compare all electric sedans to one another. Or all electric SUVs. Or all electric vehicles. But why would you? The point of product comparisons is to help people consider what they might want to buy in the market segment they have interest in.

Great comparison. 👍
I would believe the weight of the Hummer, about 2,000 pounds heavier than the R1T, would be the deciding off-road factor giving the R1T the win. The weight really effects the Hummer's performance. See TFLEV taking the Hummer off-road.
Tom, it would be great to see a range comparison at 80 miles per hour. This would give a real world range for the speed most people drive. Thanks
Going to do a Rivian vs Lightning side by side range test on the highway at varying speeds. 70-80 mph
Windshields left to right, large medium, small. Was that planned? So it looks like the Rivian has the greatest frontal visibility. Great video, Tom!
Thanks!!
I didn't miss that, it's in #2 ride and comfort
I'm in my first week owning 2023 lightning, and so far, it's great and fun to drive, but it isn't worth the $107K price that I stupidly paid. Anyway, my only concern is finding a charging station! I'm still panicking and struggling to find a fast DC charging.
Excellent review, so are you keeping the Rivian or Lightning???
I'm keeping both until at least next summer. I'll decide then.
Great review! What about software? I've heard that Rivian is way better than the others in responsiveness, ease of use, and OTA updates.
I would prefer to wait for the GMC ev pickup!
Thank you!
How about serviceability? If you have an issue with something, how easy is it to get each serviced?
Now that the EQE is in the NA market with various styling and configuration options, are you able to do a future segment on the EQE? Thank you
GM didn't have the 19.2 kW Charger ready for the Hummer when it was in development.
Ford did a good job but with that big a battery pack, should be able to do at least 250 kW peak DC fast charge.
peak DC fast charge rates are just for show
Tom, are you doing a pro power backup video at some point? I am still debating on installing at out house we are building.
Yes. Installation is in 4 weeks. Videos to follow!
Great video, could you also check out some of the Chinese companies, would love your thoughts on them
I have some questions. They are serious ones from my point of view but the EV industry seems to be overlooking.
If I ask them in a public forum I might be exposing myself as dumb.
Do you have any way that I can ask you questions directly?
I totally enjoy my HUMMER. I do wish it had onboard power system and winch integration front and rear.
I disagree with you on off-road.
Shouldn't Ford/GM pricing have considered dealer markups/price gouging? Is Rivian doing that?
Not every dealer is adding ADM. I paid MSRP and so did the three other Lightning owners I know locally
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney thanks Tom. Around here, it's at least 10k extra due to allocation restrictions....
My🤚🏼was🆙🥇if you choose not to keep the Lightning in a rare laps of judgement. 😏
Rivian looks the ugliest, especially that front end.
Hummer looks the best, But speed is top end limited at 107, which sucks.
But which one are you going to keep??
TBD
If you could only have one which would you keep
Still undecided. Leaning R1T, but every time I drive the lightning I swing back to that.
Supposedly Ford is coming out with a update to Blue Cruise shortly, that will have auto lane change.
Hello Tom when you will do the charging analyzes for VW ID4 made in US? It has 170 kw charging capability and a lot of people want to know if is true or not...
I need VW to supply me with a car
The reason I asked you about this is nobody did it and I am waiting for my ID4 delivery( I am not sure if to buy it or not). Having a car which can charge in 18 min or 40 min makes the difference. Thanks for your answer!
So, which truck are you keeping???
I'm really not sure yet. Need to drive them both through the winter. They are both great trucks.
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney I don’t envy you having to choose. I’ll be watching the podcast and this channel to see what you do.
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney I look forward to the winter range testing.
wow lucky man lovely trucks wish Land Rover made ev based on the old Defender #LandRover #Rivian #fordf150 #gmchummer
You will sucess
That Hummer looks like a bad day at the design office.
I think pedestrian safety is no issue with that open arches. And really 240kWh batteries?!
Get real.
But which one does wife like to drive? That is important category
She likes both, actually, but if she's going to need to parallel park she takes the Rivian.
Aaaannnndd, the EV Sedan/SUV daily driver of your choice. If you don’t use a truck professionally and only need the capability occasionally, you’ll save a bunch of money.
You’ll also have a backup vehicle if one or the other goes down and access to both fuel sources.
I'D like to see if these vehicles catch fire after immersion of the battery pack in salt water.....like the teslas that are catching fire in Fla...😳
Good luck with that wish, but ICE vehicles catch fire much more often...For example. Hyundai just had to recall ICE vehicles....Due to them, catching fire.... Nothing is perfect in this world....
Is this a Sean Hannity quote?
when is Toyota going to join this race. I d rather wait for the Tundra EV if there ever will be one. And why they made Rivian R1T so ugly
F150 is the real truck here the other two are electric honda ridgeline.
@B.L.A. And I, in turn, feel sorry for YOU!
Can someone feel sorry for me please too?
GM gave you a Hummer🤭
It will be more interesting to compare ford’s ground up EV against these. Rivian gets an extra point from me for that.
Why??? Lightning proves from an engineering standpoint, that the bespoke architecture meme, serves no useful purpose.... Other than for marketing....
and fwiw ford uses bespoke elements, where they make sense, such as its ladder frame.... but it shares other parts, saving money...
The body is mostly carryover from the ICE truck, everything below that is ground up EV.
@@nc3826 I don’t think you care about my answer nor will you agree with it even if you read it. So in light of that I will refrain from commenting. It’s just my opinions.
@@heathwirt8919 I wonder what percent of it is produced by 3rd party companies vs ford engineering and manufacturing.
@@ZzHasbrozZ The design (body and frame), suspension, electric motors are all for Ford products. The inverters are produced by outside manufactures.
Thanks for the comment; sending a Kit Kat your way. 😀
