Returning To The 24-Hour Race That Almost Killed Me...

- The "24 Hours In The Old Pueblo" race is one of the biggest 24-hour races in the world. But this isn't Rich Payne's first rodeo, in fact, he's here for redemption! Last year Rich attempted the race but had to pull out due to medical reason. But this year he has learnt from his mistakes and is back for blood (hopefully not in his pee), following a more tailored training plan and bringing along a top-notch support team he's hoping to complete the race!

What is the longest ride you've ever done? Let us know in the chat 👇
By far, the 400km Nakdong River bike ride stretches from Andong City to Busan City, South Korea which it tooked me 3 days. But I’ll be taking the 700+km South Korea East Coast Bike Trail from Goseong (DMZ | Boundary Line from South to North Korea) all the way to Busan and hoping to complete it in 5 days (long weekend holiday) 🚵♂️🏞️🔥
332 km in 12:20 Hours with my Gravelbike
South Downs Way last year in one day 101 miles total 13hrs 34 moving time 16 hrs total time.
Round Beinn A'Ghlo in the Cairngorms 33 miles off road 4500 feet of climbing 28 degrees c all day .landrover or single track all the way .took us 10 hours and I was only 70 then.a day to remember.
90km without food and water
Hey everyone. Thanks for all the kind words and stoked you love the video. Here’s to more challenges 😅👊
Awesome rich! Love watching you ride and congrats man!!!
Very proud of you for coming back and finishing strong. I absolutely love your videos. They are inspiring.
You're a legend Rich!
pee color from clear, to yellowish, to mountain dew red last year😭
Well done, Rich! That was an incredible effort! Congratulations on finishing strong and positive! Great video insight into an amazing endurance race.
well done Rich, we need a video about what the presenters partners have to put up with when they other halfs are doing these big events.
Crikey she’d have some stories from back in the day travelling around to all the EWS races in a camper that’s for sure lol
@@richardpayne5176 i was a subscriber when you had your channel for the EWS races you did, missed them after you stopped.
Hey Rich,
I was in the Marine Corps for a spell. I was sick and did a double murph after coming back from leave and getting ready for a training cycle. I wound up having pretty bad rhabdo after the workout. It wound up haunting me for the rest of my career because of how badly it sidelined me. I recovered physically but it's something that mentally really messed me up for a few years.
Major props to you for working through it, and being able to come to my home in Arizona to crush the race again.
Hey! Sorry to hear you went through that, glad to hear you recovered from it. Rich crushed it this time round 👏
outstanding to see you not only complete the old pueblo but finish in style this year Rich
Rich absolutely smashed it 🎉
This was awesome rich , congratulations on coming back and finishing what you started!!🤙
awesome isn't it, we are all proud of the achievement! GO RICH! 💪
Awesome stuff, Rich!!! This is what I'm trying to teach my kids. You fall, you stand up... you check your losses... you learn from the experience... and you definitely come back to accomplish the thing!!! Great video, great ride, great spirit. And....
1. See
2. You
3. Next
4. Time
5. .... ...
Great to hear the awesome feedback Max, Rich is such a "there are no loses, only lessons learnt" character, it really is something that translates to everyday life, not just on the bike!
I get knocked down but if get up again, you’re never going to keep me down….. or something old that. Happy to have helped Amy way I can dude and I always try and look at things as glass half full 👊
Learning from the experience is key. That is how you grow as a person.
I'm 40 years young, and this year I have start racing marathon races. I can tell you this video is great motivation and awesome energy!
Congratulations Rich for finishing this monstrous race 🤘
Awesome to hear that you have started racing marathon races. Were you always into the painfull stuff or has your riding been quite varied over the years?
@@gmbn Little bit of both😄
That’s sick, good luck and who knows may see you on a start line soon 👊
Genuinely one of the most inspiring videos I have seen in a long time.
I have never wanted to run marathons or even really try XC but having gotten into mtn biking in the past couple years and following your now third 24 hour race it’s made me want to set this kind of goal.
Also. That look of sincerely deep satisfaction at the end of the interview was pretty cool too
Seriously best video for a long time and great story. Love the real life. We need more of those and congratulations 😊
@12:56 that kiss wasn't UCI Road Legal, that's 200 Swiss Francs ;-).
Glad you had fun this time around during the race.
Good job Rich! Always enjoy watching your long rides and challenges. Could do an Everest next 😄
You are a good egg Richard Payne, and you've got the best partner that a Richard Payne could possibly have. Thank you both for sharing your adventure.
Our pleasure mate and I’ll pass on the kind words to Aimee.
Rich man, you crack me up. Love your bants and the videos you put out for GMBN.
Also... your Mrs... What a woman, What a team player, You lucky pup you!
Been waiting for a while for this one, actually started to think it was never coming. 😅
We had to build up the hype for it 🤘
A really powerful video, this. Very, very chuffed for you. Massive congratulations on a massively impressive race!
the production quality of this video is amazing!
Outstanding video best in a long time, more of this please
I've been waiting for this return. LETS' GO RICH!!!
Glad to see GMBN presenters have enough cojones to come back for redemption, too bad we can't say the same about other presenters who talked about redemption but never returned to the Unbound XL.
Really impressed with the production on this video. Obviously Rich did a great job, but shout-out to the crew on the editing and shooting, it's head and shoulders above the usual videos.
Thanks for the great feedback!
I won 24OP solo single speed in 2023. It takes courage to get back out there the next year . Awesome work!
Congrats on the return completion. Well done. Only seems like yesterday I watched your first attempt. Great video guys!!!
Ha ha thanks only seemed like yesterday I did it 😅
Great vid as always
Keep em coming
Thanks for coming back to the desert and having a smashing race! Well-paced, great support...glad your better-half Aimee came along...and exacting revenge on last year's ride! Loved the production too! Wish you and the GMBN crew could have a corporate team here next year! Blake, Neil, and even Martyn on the random tandem for some laps! It would be a party for sure!
Well done Rich, Aimee and the wider team. Great to see you finish properly this year and with a smile on your face too!
Cracking video, glad you got round safely
Incredible effort Rich. Congrats to you and the team. Brilliant vid as well.
I’ve been waiting for this one to drop! Loved it. Awesome job Rich!
Bloody brilliant Rich. Massive congratulations.
loved this Vid, so interesting see all the stages you go through and the amazing support of your partner and team. Well done Rich def one to look back on in years to come
Congrats! I had pretty similar stats on chasing cancellara, 310km, 4600m elevation, 9200 kcal burned, and I crossed the line in 13h and was absolutely cooked, let alone 24h.
Sooo glad you made it! Well done, mate!
Congrats Rich! The best video gmbn has put out in a long time. Well done team.
Great video! Keep it up!
Gratz man, good job 💪
One of the best edits that has been released by GMBN thanks team🎉
30k in the desert as a fellow bald man A say hell NO 🤣
Huge respect Rich You a Legend ma guy 👌💪
Ha ha I’ve got shares in factor 50 sun cream now 😅
Congratulations Rich, very exciting and a great challenge. I saw the last video and now see you complete it. Fantastic!

Great effort Rich. Well done to you and your family and friends who helped you.
Great ride Mendip Man .... well balanced race and very respectable result. Great back up team too
Walk away Rich with a smile. Happy Trails
Great vid Rich! Really impressive.
5 words?
Redemption, unforgettable desert, memorable vibe…
Just an amazing video - love it!
Love this. Keep trucking.
Another wonderful video guys.
Redemption! Good job bud!
Fantastic effort Rich! An amazing achievement!
What an unbelievable achievement Rich, good on you
What an epic ride and video. Redemption is a great feeling. Thanks for the inspiration.
Congratulations! As an old gmbn viewer and Arizona resident, I was waiting for this video to come out,4 months! I was relieved and gladden ed by your triumph over this grueling challenge with the help of a good woman and proper hydrationand nutritrion, kudos to the nth degree! I feel however, our riding region was not represented by actual fun, as all the great riding is at altitude! Please look at the m/ lemmon drop, helio peak to ladybug on MtGraham, the amazing Sunrise bike park near pinetop........these are the kind of rides to make the heart sing! Dry, high altitude, pine and aspen forest, warm, deep loam, rock sections, amazing native American fry bread at 12,000ft,the best. I say this as an ex xc racer circa '87 to'96, I was at the first norba national at Whister 1987, I feel I know fun,and warmth plays a part. P,ease come again and experience our arizona sky islands. I love the UK, as a Canadian I now at 61,ride in the warm mountains all the time, making gains yes !
I love this. Thanks for sharing
Great work Rich!
Amazing ride Rich
Cudos to the max.
And an epic support crew
Cracking edit and incidental music by the way
Well done! Glad to have you here in AZ!!
Well done Rich! very good result....now time for beers🍻
Awesome on you! Awesome video!!
Great performance! 🥳🎉
Congrats!
I always love seeing Arizona stuff. I love it here.
I’d be interested to know if you had any sort of viral infection prior to your last race? Possible to trigger rhabdo if you’ve had an infection within 6-8 weeks of a big event like that. Or you could have just been unlucky and exercise was enough to trigger it. No failure last time mate, if fate decided to take you out with sickness that’s nothing to do with your fortitude. (In fact if you think you’re genuinely sick in a long distance race the safest thing to do is run away to fight another day). Hope you enjoyed your redemption though 👌
He was doing a lot of exercise before the last one Gavin. With the back-to-back 24h races, a lot of traveling, and working a full-time job, and regular home-life commitments, it added up!
Well done Rich, such an achievement.
Well done man, machine! 👊
Redeemed! Awesome work Rich! Any idea how many calories you consumed?
Thanks dude, around 9400
Good job man! 👍
Well done!
Well done Rich,absolutely brilliant ❤
You did fantastic mate. And to come back to prove your self after last time congratulations
Well Done Rich Brilliant Result .
Congrats Rich, way to come back in style man, and 13th too, awesome.
Well done! Hope to see GMBN come and try out the untamed African races...#FreedomChallenge#36One#Munga#CapeEpic
Congrats rich was a great comeback👍 don't know if could have done though I'd have alot fitter than I am now!
Well done! Love the Darth Maul head
Loved this video, I was hoping you'd be back. You had unfinished business. (I find it ironic that your number plate said "Peeblood" on it)
Rich you are a f***ing machine ! 💪😎
(stop leaving go-pro's littered around the f.o.d) 😅
🤖 ha ha thanks man didn’t feel like it after lol but stoked you liked the vid
Shout out to Aimee, your presence was invaluable. And to Rich, "redemption" is now officially part of your vocabulary.
Congratulations 😊
Go Team Peeblood! 😄
🤣🤣🤣
Love you challenge videos, id like to see more on depth on the training you did.
wicked to see you get your redemption Rich great job. 13th wasn't unlucky for you then!
Well Done Richard!
Love this…. 👍👍
Well done on the redemption,Rich! Truly deserved the finish!
I would love to know the fueling strategy to complete something like this
Most races are not fun to actually do . There are maybe some points where endorphins kick in and you feel good but their are not many of them . Many times it's just a forced grind of pain . Where the enjoyment lies is the completion . If you did well within the goals set that increased the satisfaction . I sure enjoy a redemption story and this is a good one
Well done, Rich!
Fantastic, Rich. Well done. Really well done. I did the opposite today. Turned back with my tail between my legs as the group rode away. Thes always tomorrow, I guess.
It's hard to believe there are 110 other people dumb enough, crazy enough, or fit enough, to take on this challenge. Way to go Rich one hell of an achievement
Well done Rich! 👏👏👏👏🫡🫡
well done👍👍👍
I am planning to ride a 24h race soon, this both motivated and scared me.
Congratulations 🎉 richard on completing that grueling race.
I got rhabdomyolysis the first time I ran a 100 mile ultramarathon. I was really lucky because I never got treated and it cleared up on its own. I'd never heard of the condition and just assumed I was super dehydrated. It was probably a year later before I learned any different. It's a real danger to endurance athletes that doesn't seem widely known about.
Great, great, great
Awesome
Manitou 👌🤘
Funny that your name was right by Tyler Pearce, already watched his video
