Canyon: "these bikes are also suitable for gravel paths and off-road trails where a short loss of tyre contact with the ground due to small stairs or steps at a height of 15 to 20 cm can occur." Blake: "I'll hold my own beer while jumping 2 meters in the air"
Man, that was insane show. But, this would be not possible without your tremendous skills. Ordinary man probably kill or hurt itself more than dozen times. Anyway you encourage me to shred some trails in my neighborhood with my no suspension 90's cromoly MTB. I will ventre, its geomety is closer to road bikes than current gravel bikes. Cheers
A major survival factor for that road bike is your skill and finesse as an expert rider. I’m sure a significantly less experienced rider would break welds on the first few jumps! 😂
Great video, reminds me of growing up. In the early 80's I was in high School and all I had was a Huffy 10 spd road bike. 37-590 road tires. My buddies and I would singletrack through the forest preserves all the time. Had one basic rule in that we need to keep the tires on the ground. I must say, frames and wheels are built so much stronger these days. Rims were bending all the time back then and we weren't in stuff that gnarly. My brother broke a fork when he tanked a wheelie/bunny hop over a log. We were essentially 40 yrs ahead of the gravel bike craze!
I used to race XC back in the 90s, and this is pretty much what I do every weekend now. I have a vintage steel road frame that I put some 38mm knobby tires on, a 50mm stem with 480mm flat bars, and converted to a 1by. It's a ton of fun and makes easy trails more challenging and fulfilling, but whenever things get really rough I'm always afraid that the fork is gonna fold under me or something, but it hasn't happened yet.
This brings back the memories of taking my Trek X01 CX bike out in Panorama, BC. Wasn't so bad, but I definitely got fatigued MUCH faster than riding my SC Hightower.
This was awesome! I took a road bike down some singletrack (not as gnarly as this) last year in Portland. It was so fun. I did put flat bars there for control, but the feeling was exhilarating.
My brother in law has some really cool trails in the woods behind his house. We like to go riding, him on his full suspension MTB and me on my cyclocross.. It's shockingly good in the trails and we have a blast in there.... Sure I struggle in some bits but as soon as the trail flattens out I get on his tail... Then once we're out of the woods and on the way back home on the gravel/paved road, that's when I make him huff and puff!!
I ride my 1984 Miyata road bike with 25mm tires on gravel and mild trails all the time and my specialized Tricross on MTB trails regularly. Good fun. An easy trail on my RSD sergeant V5 is quite challenging on skinny tires and drop bars : )
This reminds me of a few weeks ago where i was riding my '98 fully rigid mtb on a group ride. We went from gravel to tree root single track. Definitely tested my usage of the right lines, was a different type of fun!
I had pro XC friends in the 2000s that I would ride with. They consistently road their road bikes on pretty gnarly, rocky trails. "Underbiking" before it was a thing. I joined them a few times, then realized I wasn't getting my road bike for free like they were and got a MTB.
I grew up mountain biking on a Trek Antelope. This brought back so many memories, but really highlights why bicycles have become so specialized. A rigid bike can do it all, but at great cost to the rider. Modern bikes have really improved the experience.
This does make me feel a lot better about hitting pot holes :) Also, front wheel catching on your toes....that's the real killer of maneuverability. I was genuinely wondering if I had the thing set up right when I first got my road bike, turns out it is more or less inevitable on smaller frames.
Mind you in mot of those videos it's Sam Pilgrim putting those bikes through hell and back... so don't try it, you'll get rekt a lot quicker than the bike.
Exactly how I got in trouble with my wife the last two times. Not the wandering eye, the breaking things "jumping" on the way home. Very fun video, and relatable.
I do wonder though, given the extremely aggressive position of a road bike what's the time difference with a full sus? How much would the superior ground contact and control of the full sus overcome the aero advantage of the road bike, when the road bike does almost certainly need to brake more?
9.4 kilos isn't exactly a heavyweight, but considering some of the super lightweight carbon stuff out there from brands these days, well... We wouldn't want to break anything that nice just for a video! This bikes still 100% good to go and we can use in more vids 😍
@@gmbn How about videos making upgrades to the road bike to improve it as a MTB? Probably pretty pointless, but there are probably a few easy changes that would help quite a bit.
In NL we don't really have difficult or extreme trails so most times you can manage on any bike. One of the times I had most fun on the bike was when riding mtb trails on fixie, underbiking ftw
Amazing skill as always! 🎉 And good call to choose a cheaper aluminium bike, it hurt just thinking of my Aeroad doing the same stuff 😅 Even if it would survive I'd have a heartattack not only from the carbon creaking but also seeing you on an even more racy geometry 😮
As a very happy owner of a Canyon Endurace AL I'm kinda pleasantly surprised by how well it held up on the trail considering how hard it was ridden here. 😅 Guess I don't have to worry so much about riding the heck out of it on the road. Lol
Wow. You took a road bike down a trail I wouldn't want to even walk down! Not sure if that's brave or the other thing, but I'm impressed. Off now to take my little hybrid for s spin :-)
I competed in a xc race with my caad13 on 28c road tires because the race took place on my local trails that I would cut through on my road bike sometimes so I was confident enough to enter the race. I got smoked instantly because I was underbiked and unfamilar with xc racing. However I did complete the race with only dismounting twice. That day convinced me to get a full sus mtb and start mtb'ing
While doing similar downhill rides on my gravel bike, my arms were more tired from keeping my body from going over the handlebars than my legs were from riding all day.
It's how my mates and I rode firetrails and hiking tracks 45-50 years ago. Though I used my 5 speed Sturmey-Archer commuter communter bike. I'd never trash my road or track bike.
Same thoughts! Martyn would've had fun watching Blake if he was there filming with him! Blake really mastered that climb up there, you can tell it's the tire's traction on the roots while his technique is perfect.
I take my road bike (Kinesis Racelight T2 with 28mm smooth tyres) off road quite often, and it can be great fun. Gravel, grass, mud, but nothing as extreme as that. Hilarious.
We used road bikes in the bush on rutted, gravelly trails with badly made jumps back in the mid to late 80s. BMX was the only other option, which was no better. We didn't bother putting the chains back on until we needed it. Plenty of broken bikes and bodies.
that is the one advantage of AL or Ti Frames of road bikes they can take a lot, disadvantage is you will feel every single bump but they can take a lot, which is why many companies still use AL and Ti for frames of mountain bikes
I ride a fully rigid 26" MTB converted to dropbars, and it has only V-brakes. Every ride is a adrenaline rush because the brakes don't work that well, and the lack of suspension almost throws me of the bike... it makes me feel alive 🤣 XD
I wouldn't even think about riding these trails with my (old) full suspension MTB. Let alone one of my road bikes. Road bikes are great for getting around and traveling fast. MTB are great if you want to know how it feels riding like you have the handbrake slightly unreleased (on smooth terrain). And for the forest.
I have that same bike albeit the blacked out version. I run a grx derailleur and a 11-36 cassette it has seen gravel mud and some much smaller jumps than what you rode.
Ffffin hell Blake. Im scared for my life when there are puddles and a bit of gravel on country lanes. And you just go and do legit black stuff on that thing. Respect Blake and GMBN

Canyon's marketing department just cleared their road bikes for double diamond downhill trails. So this usage legally falls under factory warrenty 😂
