    This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2023 Honda HR-V subcompact crossover vehicles. The new HR-V is built on Honda’s enhanced global architecture that combines the best of the CR-V platform with the new 11th generation Civic platform. The new Honda HR-V has a 2L 4-cylinder matched to a CVT with 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. FWD and AWD options are available. There have been improvements to the ride, handling and overall refinement. In the city and once up to highway speeds the HR-V sails along but when accelerating quickly on the highway, the engine gets louder, a little more power would be nice for those passing moments. The all-new 2023 Honda HR-V offers 7” of ground clearance and is bigger than the outgoing model, it is longer by over 9” and almost 3” wider. Rear legroom is excellent for this category and the cargo area is also bigger with a low lift over height making loading large or heavy items easier. Standard features include, a 7” touchscreen, available 9”, 7” driver display, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, available wireless, manual driver and passenger seat, heated front seats and 17” wheels. Most of the extra features are on the top trims like a moonroof, a wireless charger, the larger touchscreen with navigation and leather trimmed upholstery. There is no offering of ventilated front seats, heated rear seats or a power driver or passenger seat. In the US, a power driver seat is available on the top trim. For fuel economy, the HR-V gets 9.4L/100 km, 25 MPG city and 7.8L/100 km, 30 MPG highway. This Honda is expensive and priced higher than its competitors, FWD starts at $28,730 CAD/$23,650 USD, AWD $31,030 CAD/$25,150 USD, Sport FWD $25,650 USD, Sport AWD $33,930 CAD/$27,150 USD, EX-L Navi FWD $27,450 USD, EX-L Navi AWD $37,130 CAD/$28,950 USD.

    Great video as always guys! I used to like Honda years ago when I owned a 2005 Civic 4 door. Nothing fancy but was pretty solid and good price and lasted us over a decade with very few issues. Their recent styling and pricing (cars AND parts) have gone overboard IMO and honestly there are just too many better options out there to consider. Plus, this looks too much like a rip off of the Porsche Cayenne in body styling. I applaud you calling Honda out on the pricing issue. It needs to be said and you guys said it perfectly.

    Got mine (base model fwd) 3 weeks ago and so far its exactly what i've expected.. Very happy to get this engine instead of the turbo one since I got the dillution problem back in 2017 with the crv. the power is ok even if you pass vehicules.. it just revs more doing it. Just got back from vacation and it did between 6.5-7.1 liter/100km (highway) with 3 person in the car and full of luggage but in the city its more like 9.1-9.4 (with no cargo) .. Only negative thing i found is the center console seem to be screwed to some weak bracket..

    Great review! I agree 100%. The weakness (again!) is the underpowered engine. Instead of spending 30k on this, I decided on a used Volvo XC40 for a couple of grand more. No comparison. If they made this into an affordable PHEV, it would be a game changer. Unfortunately, Honda's are no longer affordable vehicles for many people.

    I test drove this today. A Sport front wheel drive. The engine felt perfectly adequate. At urban/suburban speeds, it actually felt peppy. Only at highway speeds did it feel weaker, but still adequate.
    Space and comfort inside are very impressive, except for the rear cargo space, where it gets blown away by the CRV (the dealership has a CRV right next to it and we opened it up and compared features).
    Honestly, I was impressed. Unless you need a huge cargo space, this is a very fun and adequate vehicle.

  • @lryoung17
    @lryoung17 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I feel like the class up vehicle's base engine should always be available as a top model option for the subcompact vehicles. The CR-V has a more powerful hybrid on the top trim so there is no reason the HR-V couldn't at least for now have the turbo on a Sport Touring model.

    currently own a 2016 Honda Civic EX. Been a good car, no issues. Looking for a light off road (forest service roads) SUV. Most of what you say about the HRV i can live with. One plus for me IS the engine. I really hate GDI engines (extra $$ maintenance with carbon issues) so the Honda is appealing for its port injection. Would get the top trim but what really erks is the sound system. The top trim really needs the Bose sound that is in other Honda models. Why is it so hard to even do aftermarket upgrades? Seems simple to just swap out speakers and the amp. Add in a subwoofer. I looked into doing this for the Civic but not so easy because of the headunit.
    So right now, (even tho they have GDI) i am strongly leaning on Mazda CX30 and Subaru Forester. (or Crosstrek). The only problem with Kia is its a Kia (bic lighter of cars. Doesnt last long and is disposable)

    Excellent review. I applaud you for mentioning the cons that really needed to be said. To me, this is a failed redesign. It is no longer an HRV. We had one for a year. I hated the CVT but as a 2nd or 3rd vehicle it served its purpose well. It was roomier than expected, magic seats saved me a few times, handled ok, decent on gas and reliable with a proven engine. It was extremely cheap to maintain and long term, every part was cheap even in an accident. I even liked how it looked. Now it's hideous looking, bloated, too heavy for that engine, bad on gas, far far too pricey. In think ours was very well equipped for its class at 28k CDN. Now they want 37k??? Some will buy it because its a Honda but if any other brand made this, it would sit on lots forever or turned into rentals. Honda is living in a vacuum lately. That HRV we had, is now a cx5 gt. Honestly, go get the Mazda.

    • @bettysmith4527
      @bettysmith4527 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This vehicle is not 37K, not sure what you are talking about, maybe in Canada?? The 2023 HRV EX-L is 30,500 in the USA. The MPG is very similar to the old HRV.

      In Canada after taxes and with AWD it's roughly around there so yeah.
      That being said a CX-5 is even more expensive so I'm not sure where they're coming from in that regard.
      Yes there are cheaper alternatives to this however they really aren't any better in most regards and are probably a lot less reliable so there's that.
      I agree that it seems a bit pricey for what it is but as far as new (affordable) crossovers are concerned it's one of the better options rn.

    Love the video. The car is so so. It is great next gen design language from Honda. The power inadequacy was not addressed from the previous model. Some very apparent cost cutting tactics in the rear seat. The low sales numbers will send the message. Best to wait a couple of years for an updated version that may places it as a more competitive vehicle in Canada. Honda, are you watching and reading?

      Back in 2020 when I was looking for a vehicle I checked 2020 honda civic LX and the dealer after doing the math wanted $33k Canadian, so I went to Toyota and checked the 2020 Corolla LE and out of the door for $22.7k Canadian... these two trims are best comparison and also I was getting more from Toyota so I ended up with them. My main point is Honda is overrated and their prices are too much for what you get compared to competition.

    Its a major redesign that has a huge improvement of its unremarkable predecessor. Based on Civic architecture truly gives it much better handling and driving experience. What I can get a HR-V in the same showroom, can get a Civic hatchback, which is more attractive. Its a hatchback and not a compact SUV. That's what I chose before. If I have to choose again, it will be the same.

I have a story thats says a lot about Honda, i went to buy an SUV 4y ago and was trying the CRV, when i tried to deal for the car, they said 6% interest and the reason for this is Honda is so good and reliable that its ok to buy it at a high price with high interest, they are crazy doesn’t make sense to use reliability of the brand to put high price and interest. So I went for a Nissan rogue haha, they just lost forever a costumer.

They’ve had some reliability issues with their turbos and this NA engine, albeit average in power, is a brilliant one when considering reliability. The price of this Honda being a bit too high might be a problem. But it will sell well. I do like it… but not more than that VW Sportwagon… even used. Thanks for the video.

    Thanks for this review. I always enjoy your couple reviews! Personally, I find the new HRV VERY underwhelming. I would actually prefer the previous generation! I think the design of this new one is bland and borderline ugly. The engine would be great in something lightweight, but is too underpowered for this. No magic seats. No rear armrest. Fuel economy is just okay. Prices are way too high. I’m not even a fan of the interior hexagon grill. How will you clean behind that once dust starts to settle? Sorry to say this as I like Honda generally (my old CRX was one of my favorite cars!), but this new vehicle is a big fail in my opinion.

    Good review! Just absurd pricing in Canada -- & so much missing on this vehicle with the goofy grille; I try not to lol whenever I see it. Honda really blew it with this 'restyled' HR-V; such a disappointment!
    In the U.S., though, the 2023 HR-V does come in a couple of stylish new colors, but that is all I can say for it.
    I look forward to your review of the upcoming 2023 Corolla-Cross hybrid. Look out, Honda ...

    My dear mum, who’s looking for her ‘hooray for retirement compact hybrid SUV’, had her heart set on the hybrid HRV. Well, that is until we found out Honda only offers a mere four-seater HRV in our country. Needless to say she was super disappointed.
    Mum is a huge fan of Honda (and Japanese cars in general) since she’s owned a very dependable Accord for 20 years, and loved her old Subaru before it. I’m hoping there are better options for her out there, but as her only daughter lol I’m admittedly not much of a car person. The detail and care you put into your incredibly informative reviews is much appreciated from a newbie like me! Our relatives are keen on replacing their old Nissan Pathfinder with another Japanese brand SUV, so we’ll tag along with them to see what all these brands have to offer.

I traded my ‘22 civic for this and they honestly drive the exact same! If speed and power is what you want, wouldn’t a BMW X1 be more appropriate?

    Good looking car, appropriately conservative given the target market. The same fascia on a Civic looks a little too tame because the Civic demo should skew a little younger but on a subcompact crossover, spot on. Engine is dated but reliable. Pricing? If it’s overpriced then it won’t sell and dealers will have to start discounting. If it’s underpriced then dealers will raise the price from MSRP. At least in the U.S. Capitalism, you take the good with the bad.
    PS: Three VinFast dealerships just opened in my area. Will have to go for a look see and maybe a test drive 🙂.

    As a long time Honda owner and fan(89 Civic Si, 94 Civic Si, 98 Acura EL, and currently a 12 Fit Sport) I got say, this thing looks ugly boring. It like the designers looked at the current Ford Escape egg blob design, and wondered, "What if we made the HR-V more ugly and boring than a Ford Escape?" Also, aside from the absolute Honda die-hards, and even then. I think that is a tough sell, with this pricing/features deficit compared to it's competition, I wouldn't surprised if this model is dead in 2 years due to poor sales. I huge misstep for Honda here.

    This is a fair and accurate review. I don’t see this selling well in the US (for now). I think the Civic platform is a good upgrade for size and handling. Styling outside and in is nice. Mileage, poor acceleration, and lack of value vs. other options will be the problem. Until Honda improves hp and torque, this is a car for brand loyalists only who need a little more space and reliable (if weak) engine.

    I can say that the price may not be necessarily cheaper in the USA, because by the time the dealerships put their add-ons, and market adjustments, it’s getting close to 40k for the sport at least. I saw a sport and the dealership was asking for 41k . So, good luck if you can get your hands on one close to Honda’s MSRP. I’m pretty sure the the 2023 CRV’s price ( especially the hybrid) is going to be cutthroat at this rate.

The Honda Dealer up the road wants $42 ,000 USD for a top level trim including their made up charges like nitrogen fill tyres, $900 door edge guards etc. The Toyota Dealer has a three month wait for new RAV4s, the Honda Dealers have a couple of HRHs sitting on their lot with no buyers.
