Great review, we know now it's not a park for us. I guessed 5 for your rating, agree the fill, dump and closeness to other sites not great. Thanks for the honest review as always!
Thank you for the Magnet and sticker!! My daughter and I were so bummed that it was my husband that got to meet you while on his men's camping trip in Algonquin. Keep up the great work, we love your videos!
We stayed at the pull through site next to you about 7 years ago. It's only a pull through if there was no one in the site behind. It was hard to drive out when we left. We feel the same way about the park. The beach was posted unsafe for swimming while we were there and it was a hot few days. We did however get to kayak out for a day to explore the bays. No, we won't be back.
Cheryl & Ben: Sturgeon Bay has always been a prov, park it was never private. It was actually built by the Dept. of Highways (DHO) back in the 1950s and was very rustic (and is stil very rustic to this day). In the late 1950s Sturgeon Bay ws added to the Dept. of Lands & Forests provincial park system. There were several DHO parks that were added at the same time, such as Craigleith. The massive stone fireplaces are a signature of the old DHO parks. Now the four cabins and shower house were part of a private park and were purchased and added to Sturgeon Bay in the 1990s. And one more bit of history this was one of the parks that was contracted out to the private sector (privatization) in the mid 1970s as a pilot project and remained contracted for many, many years. It came back to OP has been operated by OP for years now. Source: Protected Place "AHistory of Ontario's Provincial Parks System" Killan, 1993
Rogers LTE worked well for us there was able to stream TVs in our trailer and there is a threaded water there you just need to connect your own hose to the threaded spot at the bottom and use the other valve halfway up
Thanks again for the reviews. My husband and I were looking at going to this park a few years ago and decided on something else. Based on what you showed would probably pass on this park.
I know the area your in I love it up there Yup I fish , Never been to that park terrible re the dump station . Right off get go Id want more space between me and the other camper, at least trees and bushes , I like some privacy. Love your popcorn popper . Rogers service works up there . Maybe ok for a stop over . thanks folks. ( I think they need to change a few things , ) . Cyprus lake campground is epic been all over the Bruce Trail.
Thanks to both of you for doing this park review. I was the one to ask you for this review. Sorry about that. lol. My parents took us camping here every summer back in the 70’s. My father had a 14’ aluminum boat with a 9.9 hp motor. Yes, he loved fishing and that is why we camped there. Your video has brought back so many memories as I have not been there ever since. I think I will return there for old time sake. Back in the day, there was a camp store across the highway. It looks like that is the showers and laundry now. I do believe as well that this park was private as well. My parents were friends with the owners or they were just running the park. I am not sure. Sorry about that branch hitting your hood. Of course that can happen at any park. Anyways, thanks again for this review as you will not be returning there. It is a great fishing, water sports and swimming park though. Nice and quiet too.
I forgot to mention. At this park back in the 70’s, the nightly rate was $4.00 per night. Included in this rate were blocks of ice delivered to your cooler, garbage pickup daily from your post on your site and all the firewood you wanted. Ahhh, the good old days.
I'm glad we went to Sturgeon Bay. We've never regretted going to any park. It has its charms and we like experiencing new things. We don't need to go back but now we know.
We stayed at that park last year in May. We were visiting a friend that has a cottage about a half hour from there. Our impression was the same as yours. It's not a park we will go to again. In our opinion, it needs quite a bit of work. Some of the sites were under water due to really bad drainage. There were some things that we thought were cool, like the stone fire pits. Like you said, if you are into fishing, this is your kind of park.
We were at Grundy Lake PP during the power outage. Must have just missed you at the Grundy Store. We also went to try and grab something to eat. Power was out all day and night and restored around 3am next morning.
Thanks for the review. Camping is over just got back from our last trip and now cleaning out the trailer getting ready to put away for another year but it sounds like will be able to watch a few more of your videos.
@@shawnsprague7401 it's a sad time of year having to winterize the trailer. The good things is that we have new park reviews to take us to the end of the year.
Another great review. Silver Lake provincial park Oh boy I’m looking forward to seeing what you think of that one. We were there last thanksgiving and for us it’s definitely a one and done.
So glad you’re going back to Bruce Natl. We were just there and wondered if Ben would still give the new fill/dump station area a Skunk 😂. I know intense hikes can be a challenge for Cheryl, but we did the Overhanging Point trail for some incredible views and hardly any crowds. It can’t be more difficult than hiking the Crack or Sleeping Giant tho. Also might be fun if you do an extra park review video separate from Bruce for Fathom Five to show people how to get there and what to do exploring Flowerpot, etc. Looking forward to the upcoming videos!
We really wanted to go back to Bruce Peninsula because we feel bad about slamming the dump/fill station so much. Hopefully it's much better now and we can focus the video on more positive things. We just hope our trailer will fit in our site. We know it's a lot tighter than most parks. Thanks for the suggestions.
The people there for fishing were very happy. I've never caught a muskie. Lots of big pikes but never a muskie. Sorry to hear about your cancelled Lake Superior trip. At some point we want to do the Circle Tour all around Lake Superior.
Oddly enough, for the hours of fishing, I've had better luck musky fishing in Lake Erie and Upper Niagara. My son picked up a 3' barred musky off Bonnie Island and my wife picked up a Silver musky (39") out by Carolynn island. You remember those places when you pick up a Musky. In over 30 years of fishing there, I've never picked up a Musky. I've hooked into a couple monsters in Lake Erie/upper Niagara and brought only one to the boat side to release. Lost the biggest one I've seen (about 50") in Sugarloaf harbour while trolling for pike. Offhand my guess is that 5% of my fishing time is down here in the Niagara Peninsula. Fishing up in the 30,000 islands is like fishing in a painting, the beauty is astounding.
totally agree with your review....mind you we never stayed there....we just drove through and looked around. We did the same at Silver and Sharbot...so it will be interesting to get your perspective on those two parks. As far as your rating and upsetting the people who love it there....I bet your rating doesn't bother them at all as they will continue to return and not have to worry about more competition in getting their "favourite" spot!!!
All the time we have people asking us to give their favourite park a low rating. They want to keep it a secret. So, you're right, they're probably happy for our rating.
About 7 of us stayed at this park a couple years ago (kids and adults). Staff went around writing people up for infractions. Never saw that before at a PP! We had two sites, mayb #7, 9... great views and because we were beside each other it was fine. But if you weren't family, it would be too close. Its a small park, like you say, with little to do. The staff put most of us off from returning to tell you the truth. Probably won't return. I'd give it a 5.
I have never actually stayed here, but I have been here once. It was May 29, 2020 towards the beginning of COVID. I took the day off work and went on a day road trip to check out some parks I had never been to and walk around. One of the parks was Sturgeon Bay. I stopped at Parry Sound and got a sub at Subway and took it up to Sturgeon Bay. The park was closed so I had to park near the office and walk in. I was the only one there and I went to the beach and sat at a picnic table eating my sub looking out at the water. I checked out the rest of the park and the best I can say about Sturgeon Bay is that it is a fine park to sit at the beach eating a sub.
We really enjoy your reviews; we especially appreciate knowing if potable water fills are threaded or not. As for cell service, we'll be watching your coverage of Point Farms, as we (and many other campers we spoke with) have noticed cell reception at the Lake Huron parks (Inverhuron for sure, perhaps Point Farms to a lesser degree) is dismal. Just got back from Inverhuron, where we got 5 bars on the beach but in the campground we got 0-2 bars most of our stay. People were walking up & down the road trying to get signal just to make phone calls. It was impossible to stream or even get a web site to load. We're with Telus. We keep reading & seeing videos about people using signal boosters ($600+) or hotspot routers with external antenna ($300 range) and wonder if you've encountered anyone using this type of device, and if so, what results they're having. We're not interested in Starlink etc., just want to boost the signal we receive on our cell phones, as we use them as hotspots for streaming. Thanks again, and we look forward to your next video!
Achray campground in Algonquin park has the same type of built-up firepit. We went up in October, and the design reflected the heat back at us. It was wonderful in the cooler weather! I stayed at this park in July of this year and thought your review was very fair and a true representation of what to expect. For folks that are not into fishing there is not much to do, it is however close (40min drive) to Grundy Lake where there are tons of trails etc. - but to be honest I would rather stay at Killbear or Grundy rather than drive the 40 min. Some other points from a tent camping standpoint - the lack of comfort station is an issue if you are staying more than a few nights. I would stay away from sites 31-35 they are electric but flood badly in the rain. Again, I thought your review was very fair, the only surprise was that you rated it lower than Rockpoint ;) On the plus side this park is very quiet and the staff are absolutely amazing. Thanks gain “Camping with the Coles” for a great park review, I really enjoy watching your adventures and perspectives of all the Ontario Parks.
Thanks for you thoughts on this. I would say that we stand by our rating in relation to Rock Point. The only real issue we had with Rock Point was that the comfort stations and outhouses were filthy. Oh, and no cell service. Other than that it wasn't a bad park for us.

Know this park all too well. Park known as the poor cousin to the glamorous Killbear. Spent many summers at a cottage just up from were you kayaked. This park has been used by many families over the years; in some cases several generations. . Many eventually bought cottages, when they were still affordable back in the day. Having a boat to," go out to the Georgian Bay, Pointe au Baril lighthouse, Ojibway Club, Hole in the Wall and Flatrock" was a special activity and a big reason some families bought a large powerboat up north when camping. Fishing, was a no brainer out the bay. I agree, 5 out 10; ministry rates their parks for funding, and in this cluster Sturgeon Bay has been neglected, no surprise. A ton of upgrades are necessary to make it a preferred destination, this is way overdue. In conclusion, a good short stay park that requires a powerboat to explore the Georgian Bay. Looking forward to your next reviews.
@@CampingwiththeColes our industry charge by the size. As much as I can see on the video you roughly looking at around $300-$600. Unfortunately aluminum adds to the repair cost:( But it is going to be a lot cheaper than body shop repair. Plus you keep your factory paint finish and it would be done in a few hours.
Aaron Provincial Park, near Dryden, Ontario, is our Sturgeon Bay. We stopped for a couple nights on the way home from a western trip and we definitely did not get the appeal of the park. It was good for fishing but there was nothing else to do. We'd probably rank it 5 - 5.5 as well. Not every provincial park is going to knock it out of the park (so to speak) for everyone.
Ha was about to say, did they forget they stayed at Lake St Peter? But totally get the park feeling smaller if the sites are closer together compared to St Peter
My least favourite park , it used to be a trailer park (yuck) and the highway into the park is terrible , the park is small and moving a trailer around is difficult . We wont return!
just one think about the fish species you guys mention...it's not pickerel its walleye...pickerel is part of the Esox family which is pike and musky....understand that canadians like to call walleye pickerel but that is not the correct name for that species...for people that maybe getting into the sport of fishing.... giving the correct terminology should be key

Ben find a paintless dent repair technician in your area to fix your truck. It's a fairly easy fix looks like (that's what I do for a living)
@@MrOri I heard that it's simple for a steel truck but not so much for aluminum. Do you think it can be done with the aluminum hood?
@@CampingwiththeColes aluminum is harder to repair for sure, but still doable.
@@MrOri any guesses on a cost?
@@CampingwiththeColes our industry charge by the size. As much as I can see on the video you roughly looking at around $300-$600. Unfortunately aluminum adds to the repair cost:( But it is going to be a lot cheaper than body shop repair. Plus you keep your factory paint finish and it would be done in a few hours.
@@MrOri thanks a lot👍
Aaron Provincial Park, near Dryden, Ontario, is our Sturgeon Bay. We stopped for a couple nights on the way home from a western trip and we definitely did not get the appeal of the park. It was good for fishing but there was nothing else to do. We'd probably rank it 5 - 5.5 as well.
Not every provincial park is going to knock it out of the park (so to speak) for everyone.
Exactly. Being there still beats a good day at work. That's why it still got over 5.
i thought Lake st peter was smaller with only 66 sites?
@@lindsayl5279 you are absolutely right. This park felt smaller to us because the sites are so small and close together.
Ha was about to say, did they forget they stayed at Lake St Peter? But totally get the park feeling smaller if the sites are closer together compared to St Peter
Well at least the branch hit the truck and not the trailer.
My wife and I toured this park a few years back hoping for an alternative to Killbear...not a fan at all
I'd say if you're up that way you might as well go to Killbear or Grundy. Both are excellent parks.
So….,5.25.
You even have quarters on your rating scale!
FIVE POINT TWO FIVE!!
Averages can save a marriage! 😂👍🏼
Happy wife = Happy life😆
We were there summer of 21 and hated everything about it.
😠
My least favourite park , it used to be a trailer park (yuck) and the highway into the park is terrible , the park is small and moving a trailer around is difficult . We wont return!
We understand😊
just one think about the fish species you guys mention...it's not pickerel its walleye...pickerel is part of the Esox family which is pike and musky....understand that canadians like to call walleye pickerel but that is not the correct name for that species...for people that maybe getting into the sport of fishing.... giving the correct terminology should be key
FYI for some reason your video isn't showing up in my "subscriptions" page, which is really annoying. I had no idea you even released a video until I saw it while scrolling other videos.
