Your discussion of internet access in Alaska reminded me of a conversation I had with a Sprint rep (yeah, I know - long gone) probably 22-23 years ago, where he said that all of northern Minnesota was served by a single DS-3 line (45 Mbps)! (For Sprint customers, at least.) How times have changed!

I live southwest of your last videos end spot at the Kitwanga junction. Our local newspaper ran an article that the Cassier Highway is to get major cell service upgrades the next coming year, now that it's very, very limited, how much a major upgrade would be, who knows, but it should be better.
An hour of Open Roading! 🎉 If you're ever back in the Homer area, water taxis will take you to some really great hikes only accessible by boat across the bay to Kachemak Bay State Park - Grace Ridge is an iconic one with really great views. As an added bonus, there are kelp forests in the bay that make really great habitat for sea otters, so it might increase the odds of seeing them up close. It's not unusual to come across sea otter rookeries in the area and the taxis will slow down a little bit for passengers to enjoy them :)
Wow, I can’t even imagine how much work you put into that! I am sure a lot of people are really going to benefit from such a comprehensive breakdown! 🙌 For your next trip check out the Crow Pass video trail guide put out by the Alaska state parks on TH-cam. You don’t have to do the whole thing - you could do a day hike to the prettiest part and there is even a public use cabin if you wanted to stay over.
@@OpenRoading I feel like the people who are disappointed by the trip are expecting a tourist destination. But that’s not what Alaska is, it’s the last frontier. And getting out into is the best part.
@@carmancloud I agree with a caveat...I also think not every place is for every person. People experience things differently for so many reasons. We knew the weather was gray in late summer, but we would have been struggling with too much more gray because we are people who just LOVE sunshine. I think if we had stayed in Alaska into September our videos would have lost some of the happy tone. 😂 -J
We just got back from a vacation to Arkansas, should I say RURAL Arkansas, The roads were something we had never had before. When we made our first stop , the hubby had to get out the tools to tighten so many screws etc. LOL. I thought of you guys and your warning that you just have to do this with an RV. The hubby stated well I guess i have a few minor repairs to make before the next trip.

Thank you for the very detailed & informative breakdown of your xpenditure, which all made sense. I’m still not convnced that stocking up some groceries beforehand was necessary - there may have been a price differential but actually you spent $$$$, just at a different time. And if you left Alaska with some of the items???? But in the end, wharever floats your boat (as we say in New Zealand!)
Oh we would do it differently the next time around. We would stock up only on items that we know might be hard to find - Dairy free specific items - Protein powder - Anything that we are brand specific on Then we would only "stock up" enough on the rest for the amount of time for us to get to Anchorage and then stock up again until the next time we'd be in Anchorage or a bigger city in Canada. Because trust me...if you end up doing a normal grocery trip at a rural town in either Alaska or Canada...you will spend soooooo much more money. But yes! We would have split up the stock ups. -J
I loved this video and the whole Alaska series. I'm so glad my 2 favorite RV channels did this together. Going to Alaska has been on my bucket list for years, but due to health issues, I've realized I will never be able to make the trip. But thanks to the 4 of you guys this summer, I was able to get to see it.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but when you first started planning for Alaska, Trinity wasn’t in your life, was she? I can see how much happiness she’s brought into your life, and your videos wouldn’t be the same without her now!
It’s true! When we considered adopting her, we wondered how Alaska would fit into those plans, but we are so grateful we have her and she was able to experience Alaska too!! -K
They are the best travelers to be honest. No fuss, no problems. Cody is doing OK - but he's showing his age and illness for sure. He keeps having some fun in the RV between naps and loves his meds every day. We both can't believe it's been almost a year since we thought we were about to lose him. We feel blessed he's continued to be part of the family for this long and we are so so grateful he didn't pass or need emergency care while we were in Alaska or Canada. -J
Your Canadian prices must be from Southern part of BC or Alberta because the farther north in the provinces and the Yukon prices are closer to Alaska. Same with your fuel costs, Alberta tends to be the cheapest fuel in Canada due to all the oil and gas production in the province.
100% They were all from Walmarts - I think in Alberta. We did pick some things up in Whitehorse and didn't feel like it was too different - but then again we were in a hurry so I may have missed some things! -J
I have to go with Joe @@OpenRoading on this one. It isn't whether you set foot on the ground, it's how much you experienced. You may get to see more from the plane flying over/around the mountain than you ever would had you just walked into the park and put "boots on the ground". So for me, it's definitely an experience-based assessment over a physical location, per say.
We cover the great empty PB jar in a video in 2 weeks. 😁 We didn't do a lot of vet scouting. We generally start looking when if a problem begins to arise. Thankfully, we didn't ever need one while we were north of the lower 48! -J

@OpenRoading One daughter stayed overnight between shifts at Tampa General Hospital. Another daughter rode it out in her dorm, which amazingly never lost power for more than a few seconds. Our son and his roommates did lose power and just got it back this evening. All three have been helping others with flooding and tree damaged homes. Glad your family is doing well.

My burning question is. As I am a Canadian and never tried Jiff peanut butter, Kraft peanut butter has always been my go to. Which do you feel is better?
Anytime you are in a cruise port, the restaurants are going to have higher prices. I travel and cruise. I find it's true in most cases. I don't think your activities prices were high at all. Or the Campgrounds costs. Again, I'm comparing what I pay for 2 weeks in Disney World.
@OpenRoading I am an avid Mouse person. The idea of going to Disney World on a family trip has saved my mental health a few times. Even doing housework listening to Disney songs gets my mind off my MS and pain. It's amazing how it helps me have a positive attitude. ☺️ I have friends in North Pole and Homer, so Alaska is on my bucket list, too.
I'm curious to know local motel rates versus campgrounds. If KOA cost you $90 per night, what were nearby motels charging? Same question when the dry camping was $15, what where local motels or cabins?
Our Bed and Breakfast in King Salmon was $400 a night. Granted, King Salmon isn't Anchorage but if you're in a touristy area....I would expect to pay touristy prices. 😁 -J
Ooooo Great question. I'm going to say that overall I think they were a touch more expensive. Butttttt there were some places that were downright theft. Homer for instance, I think it was $11 a load for a small washer. That was an outlier, but when I walked in there I was like "no....way...." -J
Ohhh! We didn't mention the Credit card thing (although we did in another video). You want to make sure your credit card doesn't have extra charges for international purchases. One of ours did and we discovered after making a few purchases. And yes, you want to be sure you know what your international phone plan is. Ours was covered 100% in Canada - but other plans on the same network cost $10 a day per line. 👀 That can get pricey quickly. Phone service was not super reliable anyway so we highly recommend starlink! -J
Trinity totally made the Alaska trip! She just didn't come with us to Brooks Falls (a quick overnight trip we did while we were camping in Hatcher Pass) Craig and VIctoria watched her for that night. She didn't come with us on that because it was a plane ride, then a float plane ride - a day in a national park full of bears, before finally getting to our bed and breakfast. -J
Bhahaha! If you can believe it, the only cinnamon rolls that were consumed on the entire trip were the ones at the Testa River Lodge! One you have perfection, you just can't go back to sub par. 😂 -J
😂 I got people trying to convince me that the poscard club will work wherever we go...so maybe next year we'll do an Ohio postcard club and see how it goes. 😁 -J

Thanks so much! Did you hear the Anthem snuck in there?! 😁 -J
@@OpenRoadingsure did! 🇨🇦 🇺🇸
I live southwest of your last videos end spot at the Kitwanga junction. Our local newspaper ran an article that the Cassier Highway is to get major cell service upgrades the next coming year, now that it's very, very limited, how much a major upgrade would be, who knows, but it should be better.
I mean... 1 tower would be huge. 😂 Thanks for that info! -J
An hour of Open Roading! 🎉
If you're ever back in the Homer area, water taxis will take you to some really great hikes only accessible by boat across the bay to Kachemak Bay State Park - Grace Ridge is an iconic one with really great views.
As an added bonus, there are kelp forests in the bay that make really great habitat for sea otters, so it might increase the odds of seeing them up close. It's not unusual to come across sea otter rookeries in the area and the taxis will slow down a little bit for passengers to enjoy them :)
We considered it! If we had spent an extra week we totally would have taken one of those! -J
Thanks so much! We want to do some more "epic hikes" when we go back! -J
@@OpenRoading That is true and it was so rainy this summer!
Terrific video and a great series! Thanks
So so glad you came along! Hopefully you enjoy what comes next! -J
Welcome back to America...LoL. OK, the lower 48. Great adventure you guys. Stay safe
Sometimes when you are in Alaska it's a weird feeling because you are in the US...but it doesn't quite feel that way since you are so crazy far from the rest of the country! -J
Thanks, great info.
You're welcome! -J
Yay my favorite couple/ channel ❤
Awww thank you so much! We are honored!! -K
I say you offer the milepost guide to your members only with your autographs to the highest bidder!
LOL! This amazing idea from a non-member. I'd do it but I'm pretty sure we'd make a whole 2 bucks on the endeavor. 😁 -J
I would love you to take a long trip into Canada as part of your video series---that would be fun to see!!
@@OpenRoading I am legally blind--I enjoy the comments and commentary more than the video sights.! I can't drive and I use many paths to help me even write ---my laptop is hooked up to a large screen tv and that still is not enough to see. Some are here for the sights --I am here to listen.
@@OpenRoadingSell Trinity’s paw or nose print. :) Take advantage of having royalty traveling with you!
@@MoniqueNelson-h6y We were going to come across it this year - but gas prices helped us decide to get back to the lower 48. -J
Good information!
Thanks so much! -J
We would stock up only on items that we know might be hard to find
- Dairy free specific items
- Protein powder
- Anything that we are brand specific on
Then we would only "stock up" enough on the rest for the amount of time for us to get to Anchorage and then stock up again until the next time we'd be in Anchorage or a bigger city in Canada.
Because trust me...if you end up doing a normal grocery trip at a rural town in either Alaska or Canada...you will spend soooooo much more money.
But yes! We would have split up the stock ups. -J
Good job!!!!
Thanks so much! -J
Another great video
Thank you!
Joe I’ll email ya Saturday God be with you guys thanks for the abundance of insight on RV open Roading ❤❤
Sounds good! I'll be watching the inbox! -J
@@OpenRoading cool you guys 👍
Correct me if I’m wrong, but when you first started planning for Alaska, Trinity wasn’t in your life, was she?
I can see how much happiness she’s brought into your life, and your videos wouldn’t be the same without her now!
It’s true! When we considered adopting her, we wondered how Alaska would fit into those plans, but we are so grateful we have her and she was able to experience Alaska too!! -K
we went all the places with our 40 foot motorhome no problem parking,
We only had issue parking down that one hill. Our issue was finding good boondocking. -J
Peanut butter with ANYTHING... is the FULL experience! :)
Great video. 🙏🥰💐 How was it traveling with Trin and Kody? How is Kody doing?🙏💖💙
Very cool
Thanks! -J
Sorry Joe, but I’m in Team Kalyn: unless your foot’s on the ground it doesn’t count!
I'm gonna keep campaigning! 😂 -J
@@4KrystylRoseand Joe converted me to this back in the video. So I agree.
@@4KrystylRose YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think there are 7 of us now. 😂 -J
Unrelated subject but I love those blue chairs your sitting in. Are they foldable and do you have a link or where you got them?
They are indeed! Unfortunately (if you are in the US...) We got them at Canadian Tire so I'm not sure you can get them in the US. 👀 -J
Did you bring enough PB? Did you scout out veterinary options? My furbrats can be meh or next level😂.
We cover the great empty PB jar in a video in 2 weeks. 😁
We didn't do a lot of vet scouting. We generally start looking when if a problem begins to arise. Thankfully, we didn't ever need one while we were north of the lower 48! -J
Happy friday🎉🎉🎉🎉
Happy Friday! Sorry for the delay! This video was getting edited all the way till 6pm Eastern and we found blazing fast internet nearby but it wasn't quite fast enough to get it up on time. 😭 -J

Thanks for keeping it real
I have a question, please can you tell me
how many jar of peanut butter you had left over.
Thanks

First of all, I hope your family in Florida is doing ok.
They are! Thank you. My brother was without power for 12 or so hours, my parents is still out, but live nearby so they can hang out with the bro's fam until theirs comes back. No damage - just light branches in the yard. So many on the coast felt it hard though. 😔 -J
@@turner120995 Good good good news! I'm sorry that I missed that you had family there as well! I'm usually better at keeping the names in context! on here! -J
Well yeah...compared to Disney we're talking cheapo prices! 😁 The "Mouse Tax" LOL -J
@@TravelingWithSpecialAbilities That's cool. Kalyn would love to visit the parks there some more. The campground there is on her bucket list. -J
@@OpenRoading Fort Wilderness?
@@TravelingWithSpecialAbilities Yes! That's the one. Don't tell Kalyn I couldn't remember the name. 👀 -J
Was laundry mats expensive? How much per loads?
Ooooo Great question. I'm going to say that overall I think they were a touch more expensive. Butttttt there were some places that were downright theft.
Homer for instance, I think it was $11 a load for a small washer. That was an outlier, but when I walked in there I was like "no....way...." -J
Two tired teachers went up there and they experienced phone and credit card troubles. Did you? Sorry if you said anything, I missed it.
How come your puppy dog did not make the trip. I guess that was before I joined??
Trinity totally made the Alaska trip! She just didn't come with us to Brooks Falls (a quick overnight trip we did while we were camping in Hatcher Pass) Craig and VIctoria watched her for that night. She didn't come with us on that because it was a plane ride, then a float plane ride - a day in a national park full of bears, before finally getting to our bed and breakfast. -J
I'd bet $500.00 of that grocery bill was Cinnamon Rolls......
Bhahaha! If you can believe it, the only cinnamon rolls that were consumed on the entire trip were the ones at the Testa River Lodge! One you have perfection, you just can't go back to sub par. 😂 -J
I'm not sure I'll ever be able to go to Alaska. I can't tolerate eating that much Peanut Butter. 😢
😂
How come everyone wants to visit Alaska, yet we never see “Join us on our trip to Ohio!” 🤪
😂 I got people trying to convince me that the poscard club will work wherever we go...so maybe next year we'll do an Ohio postcard club and see how it goes. 😁 -J
I'm in Yukon and take day trips to Alaska and would love to see Ohio
@@OpenRoading I think a postcard club where you send out a post card from each town you stop at (not necessarily a specific state or stop) would totally work. 😉
@@4KrystylRose Oh shoot...I've already been working on the Ohio idea... First stop - Cleveland. (I'm sure there are actually lots of fun things to do in Cleveland) -J
@@terryzanger7152 There are actually some pretty cool places in Ohio. It just doesn't strike the imagination like Alaska or even the Yukon. I got pretty psyched when we crossed into the Yukon. 😁 -J
