    You have some very good ideas there, Brian. I love the spirit of what you're doing. I especially love that your dogs go with you. I wish I had a rig that would permit that in my case with two sheep dogs. Cheers.

      It was a Veltop Classic 2+ model and is about 7 years old.
      I replaced the fiber rod extensions that held up the roof (easily removed) with two stainless steel whip antennas cut to the right length and this works great.

      @@m9078jk3 Works for you but I meant the roof and windshield of the ELF body shell that protects me here in Florida. I don't take the sun well and I like hauling all purchases completely out of the weather. Almost every day I haul recycling to various locations including bulky cardboard. I get collision protection from the full shell. I have hauled 12 one gallon jugs of water with room for 2 more, I hauled potted shrubs for landscaping that made it look like I was driving a jungle around. I have a trailer for hauling larger things. The high visibility, full lighting and signals and loud horn has saved me from dicey situations. If I lose my ELF I will buy another or similar new version but the PEBL is too hot and heavy for me.

  • @popeyegordon
    @popeyegordon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Those are some impressive mods in the front, Brian. First question is do you have full turning radius clearance for sharp low speed maneuvers with the enclosures? And your readout showed no battery voltage drop or current draw when you engaged your motors. Did you disconnect something? In Florida I need wheel well ventilation but many northern owners will be very interested with your mods so I am sharing your video with our large FB owners group. They may have more questions.

    • @brianduncan2149
      @brianduncan2149  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes you can turn the full radius with the enclosures.
      The 2nd cyclone motor uses a separate controller and doesn't use the cycle analyst. That's why you didn't see a current draw on the cycle analyst. I will remove the cyclone geared motor and use it on some future project. Its a bit loud, slow and really didn't improve my hill climbing ability. Im looking at installing a higher watt and torque motor to replace the current ELF motor. By the way, my current ELF motor is a GRIN TEch 1000 watt motor with 40 amp GRIN Tech controller. I burnt up my original elf motor many moons ago...ha. My own fault, look what I pull.

      @@brianduncan2149 Have you seen the video of that eccentric old guy who is crossing the US in n ELF plastered with Jesus signs while towing a heavy trailer loaded with 400 watts worth of solar panels? When he hit the first mountain range he added a second sprocket to gear down his motor for mountain grades. He probably had no other choice.

    • @brianduncan2149
      @brianduncan2149  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven't see that. Can you send the link. A problem that I found while bicycle touring is high cross winds in mountain passes and lack of any shoulder. At least that was the issue in the southern tiers. As far as the grade you can always get out of the elf and reach in and press the throttle and walk it up the mountain. I have done that once or twice on long big hills.

    Your doggy-dude friends have got so much spare energy! Have you ever considered making some harnesses and reins and letting the dogs run in front of you? Er, you could fix the ends of the reins to some sturdy bracket somewhere... Oh, I don't know, perhaps on the front of the ELF?
    And with all that snow and muck and slush on the ground, you'd be remiss if you didn't call out to warn the dogs to stay clear of it. Muck, slush, muckslush... Say it quickly and it sounds a bit like "MUSH." Hmm. Fancy that.
    I'm sure the huskies - I mean doggies - would enjoy the exercise, and you'd probably not have to pedal quite so hard on the hills...

      They do use a lot of salt. There's no negative effect on the elf. Being stainless steel, aluminum for the most part there's no rust problems.

      I made fabric doors, and I haven't had time to post a video, I will look at making fabric sip in wheel wells next year. I don't have time to manufacture any parts and sell them.

    Hello Brian,
    My doors are working out great. Did you make a video of how to make the wheel enclosures? I noticed you used two types of corrugated plastic. Would it be feasible to use just the thin black one? I also see zip cords. I also like the little cardboard rain flap. Do you have an idea for rain splash from the rear wheel? I tried a fender but it wouldn’t fit under the storage area.
    One more thing. Is that a No Trespassing sign I see?

      cut the fender so it won't need to go under the trunk area.

      Far cheaper than two car doors. And every penny invested in an ELF gives back 4 cents over a 10 year period. It saves you $30,000 every ten years you don't own a car.

      I got rid of my car 6 years ago when I bought the ELF. I have saved $18,000 so far by not owning a car. That's always more expensive. ELF just has bike maintenance costs.

    • @brianduncan2149
      @brianduncan2149  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The mountain drive gearing is for steep grades in the western united states. For the most part Michigan doesn't have that many hills where its needed. This video is old where I was working out concepts. I made fabric doors and have a front 2 wheel drive motor system.

    The Organic Transit owner group likes this video of yours I shared. Rob Cotter upvoted it with 10 others. I would struggle with the small area to climb in, lifting my old fat legs up over the well shrouds would be hard. I wonder if the center section of your wheel wells could be tapered down a lot since little extra room is needed when turning the wheels near the axle or top of the wheel.

    • @brianduncan2149
      @brianduncan2149  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I road a pebel this week. The pebel also has wheel well covers that stick out 4 inches or so. There about the same as mine. I don't think you can loose any distance off the width of the covers due to the wheel clearance. You would need to lengthen the feel shaft making the elf even wider.

    • @popeyegordon
      @popeyegordon 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brianduncan2149 If you drove a PEBL you know about that loud geared motor. I was referring to a scalloped wheel well with the center area only being tapered in where it needs no extra clearance during turns. The axle and top of wheel does not intrude more during turns, only the leading and trailing edge of the tire. That little additional area totaling almost two cubic feet would help me with my extra wide EEE duck feet that need extra room where my toes stick outward instead of straight ahead while in the pedaling position. I use the full platform pedals with heel cups. I ran across the mountain climbing ELF video by accident and don't remember how I found it.
