Many Christian denominations teach that God is a Trinity. However, note what the Encyclopædia Britannica states: “Neither the word Trinity nor the explicit doctrine appears in the New Testament . . . The doctrine developed gradually over several centuries and through many controversies.”
In fact, the God of the Bible is never described as being part of a Trinity. Note these Bible passages:
“Jehovah our God is one Jehovah.”-Deuteronomy 6:4.
“You, whose name is Jehovah, you alone are the Most High over all the earth.”-Psalm 83:18.
“This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.”-John 17:3.
      “God is only one.”-Galatians 3:20.
"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation."--Colossians 1:15
JESUS made it clear that some forms of worship are not acceptable to God. He spoke of “false prophets,” comparing them to a tree that produces worthless fruit and “gets cut down and thrown into the fire.” He also said: “Not everyone saying to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the kingdom of the heavens.”-Matthew 7:15-22.
Jesus, in fact, said regarding some who would claim to follow him: “I will confess to them: I never knew you! Get away from me, you workers of lawlessness.” (Matthew 7:23) Further, when speaking to the religious leaders of his day, Jesus applied to them God’s words to apostate Israel: “It is in vain that they keep worshiping me, because they teach as doctrines commands of men.”-Mark 7:6, 7.
Clearly, not all worship is approved by God or his Son. Thus, not all worship is true worship. Significantly, God did not approve of the forms of worship practiced by people in the nations surrounding Israel. In fact, he punished his people when they deviated from his laws and adopted such forms of worship.-Leviticus 18:21-30; Deuteronomy 18:9-12.
The “good news of the kingdom” is being “preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations.” (Matthew 24:14) This is not necessarily being done “with striking observableness”-in so obvious a way that every individual on earth will recognize it as a message from God. Yet, God’s truth is recognizable and strikes a responsive chord in honesthearted individuals who want to worship God in the way approved by him.-John 10:4, 27.

I have been researching about it for years. I've heard so many different points of view but the reality is that it is in fact a mystery.

Thank you so much Bishop Barron for you great videos! You are such a great communicator of our faith's fundimentals.
I like to think of the trinity as "ONE 1"; "O" as "The Father", "N" as "The Son", and "E" as "The Holy Spirit" all equating to "1". A distributed concept equating to a singular real value. We all form from God's "singularity" and we all form in GOD's "supersymmtrinity".

I have watched quite a lot from Bishop Barron over the last few years. I keep coming back to him and always leave with my faith enriched.
I do not have a denominational identity but very much respect the orthodox position and the consistency of the Catholic Church.
I have, through prayerful thought and open minded research overcome some of the classical objections to R.C. and the misgivings that remain are those one would probably find wherever fallen man has any influence. The organisation is imperfect, the organism, the (whole) body of Christ is not.
As my faith journey continues I shall no doubt enquire more of Bishop Barron, Trent Horn and Brant Pitre.
    Shalom. 🙏

IMO, Trinitarianism is the most elegant way of understanding how the God of the Bible can be both transcendent and immanent. We have a wholly Holy and Transcendent God the Father that decrees/begets, we have an Immanent God the Son (when speaking of the Person of Jesus Christ) that "breathes physical life" into the Father's decrees, and we have God the Holy Spirit as the "metaphysical glue" that holds it all together, and communicates God to us.

As a rather bold move: what could be added it how God forms an "image of himself". As Fr. Birngruber explains in his book, Morals for Lay People, it is through self-contemplation:
Colossians 1: "image of the invisible God" and "first born of all creation". As explained by Jesus in St. John 10:30: "I and the Father ARE one."

  • @krdiaz8026

The problem is, based on what I've observed from people who find it difficult to understand the Trinity, many think that the terms 'son' and 'father' describe human relationship. Rather, human language is limited when trying to explain God. Using the terms 'son' and 'father' is the best we can do if we are unable to present a lengthy explanation, like when an artist describes the color cerulean to a non-artist as 'blue.' Any artist worth his salt will know that cerulean is NOT blue.

      My personal understanding:
      Father == old person (past)
      Son == Baby (Future)
      Spirit == You (Present)
Present is spirit because there is no present
      God is "nothingness"
Nothingness is frame, where continuity is painted.
Every past dissolve into nothingness. (Past to nothingness, Father to God is permitted).
Past cannot migrate to present or future without dissolving in nothingness(God).
Create new trinity, substituting Past,Present,Future and Nothingness.
Futher to my personal understanding, universe, time itself is quantised. That mean everything is just slice of painting over nothiness. Every thing dissolve before time proceeds.

Another well put homiletic by your excellency. May I humbly note that the reference to the Spirit as God's sigh, while meaningful in itself (indeed Jesus breathed on the Apostles after His resurrection and said "receive the Holy Spirit") can be taken as seeming to diminish His full personhood. It might have helped to add that this Love between Father and Son lacks itself no divine perfection, including Personhood. Thus the simplest possible numeracy of God in Love is not two, but three Persons in one Unity. Thanks again for causing so many to think further on the Trinity, and necessarily our own relationship to our magnificent Creator.

The trinity ty is a uniquely Christian belief wherein Jesus is God.
Islam, as a matter of doctrine rejects that Jesus is God.
That said, I encourage you to further study the trinity and grapple with its mysteries.
Jesus is in fact God, and His death and resurrection at the Father’s behest cements that fact. His death and resurrection opened a new covenant between God and man through which we can be forgiven of our sins.
If you believe that Jesus is the Son of God and have faith that His death and resurrection can bring about the forgiveness of your sins, I implore you to pray to Him for the forgiveness of your sins and then to be baptized into His church.
The Christian path is a difficult one, no doubt, but it is the one and only way to enter into a relationship with God.
I’m no one special but you’re more than welcome to message me if you want to talk about God.

      Surah 6:34,
"Rejected were the messengers before thee: with patience and constancy they bore their rejection and their wrongs, until Our aid did reach them: there is none that can alter the words (and decrees) of Allah. Already hast thou received some account of those messengers."
      Surah 6:115,
"The word of thy Lord doth find its fulfillment in truth and in justice: None can change His words: for He is the one who heareth and knoweth all."
      Surah 18:27,
"And recite (and teach) what has been revealed to thee of the Book of thy Lord: none can change His Words, and none wilt thou find as a refuge other than Him."
......Since the Quran says that none can change the words of Allah and Mohammad believed the Bible to be GODS word,
Rafi Haritha and Sallam Mishkam and Malik al-Sayf and Rafi Huraymila came to him [Muhammad] and said: "Do you not allege that you follow the religion of Abraham and believe in the Torah which we have and testify that it is the truth from God?" He replied, "Certainly,
Ibn Ishaq's "Sirat Rasulallah", biography of Muhammad, page 268.

      50. "I come to confirm the Torah which preceded me and to make lawful to you some of the things you are forbidden. I bring you a sign from your Lord: therefore fear God and obey me."
      Dawood - Quran 5:46, 47
After them we sent forth Jesus, the son of Mary, confirming the Torah already revealed, and gave him the Gospel, in which there is guidance and light, corroborating what as revealed before it in the torah, a guide and admonition to the righteous.
      47. Therefore let those who follow the Gospel judge according to what God has revealed therein. Evil-doers are those that do not judge according to God's revelations.
      Ali - Quran 61:6
And remember Jesus the son of Mary said: "O Children of Israel! I am the apostle of Allah (sent) to you confirming the Law (which came) before me...
      Dawood - 29:46
Be courteous when you argue with People of the Book except with those among them who do evil. Say: "We believe in that which is revealed to us and which was revealed to you. Our God and your God is one.
      Dawood - 10:37
This Koran could not have been devised by any but by God. It confirms what went before it and fully explains the Scriptures. It is beyond doubt from the Lord of the universe.
      ETC, etc,etc,
Then you must believe what the bible teaches,
      John 1:1, 2,3,14 {The Holy Spirit thru John calls Jesus God}
In [the] beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and God was the Word .
Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ Λόγος, καὶ ὁ Λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν Θεόν, καὶ Θεὸς ἦν ὁ Λόγος.
En arche en ho logos kai ho logos en pros ton Theon kai theos en ho Logos
He was in [the] beginning with God.
All things through him came into being, and without him came into being not even one [thing] which has come into being.
And the Word flesh became, and tabernacled among us,

Simple concept of god in Christianity explained!!!
Christians believe in trinity, Jesus is fully god, the father is fully god, holly spirit is fully god. But there is not 3 fully god but 1 fully god! The trinity teaches that around 2000 years ago, god asked HIMSELF to go to earth then HE agreed with HIMSELF& volunteered HIMSELF to HIMSELF to offer HIMSELF to save mankind from HIMSELF for adams sin that most of the mankind didn’t commit. Then God impregnated a young female as HIMSELF with HIMSELF to be HIMSELF. God prayed to HIMSELF glorified HIMSELF repeatedly. God strengthened HIMSELF & talked to HIMSELF. Finally, God forsook HIMSELF & sacrificed HIMSELF to prove his loyalty to HIMSELF , while dead he resurrected HIMSELF so HE could exalt HIMSELF above HIMSELF then he sat at his own right hand!!!!

It just occurred to me that how we go about understanding the Trinity is, in some sense, a reflection of the Trinity itself. What the Trinity "is" is very abstract and mysterious. What the Trinity "does" is a bit more concrete, especially when thinking of the Divine Persons in terms of their Offices in executing Divine decrees (ie God the Father created the universe through the Son and in the Spirit). In other words, our gradual *understanding* of the Trinity's *being* proceeds from reflection on what the Trinity has begotten (ie the *doings* of the Trinity). Hence the analogy:
    Abstract Being Father (both beget)
    Gradual Understanding Spirit (both proceed)
    Concrete Doings Son (both begotten).
Just as the Spirit has inspired man to say, "no one comes to the Father, except through the Son".

(Trinity is False made up by Satan!)
Jesus is Gods Son that's it Not (God Almighty the Creator) Let's take a Look at the Bible and see what it Says
    1. Then why is God head of Christ just as Christ is Head of man? (1st coriethians 11:3)
2.) Then why does Scripture consistently phrase Jesus as a Separate person from God? (John 20:17); (John 14:1); (Mark 10:18); (John 17:1-3), Also in Heaven, (Luke 22:69)
    3.) Then how can Jesus have a god? (Micah 5:4), (pslams 45:6, 7; 89:26, John 20:17; (Romans 15:6;2), (Coriethians 1:3, Eph. 1:3; (Col. 1:3) (Mark 15:34); (John 17:1-3) Also in heaven (Rev. 1:6; 3:3, 12)
    4. Then why does Scripture say he was born and part of creation? (Colessians 1:15)
    5. Then why does (Rev. 3:14) Say that Jesus was the beginning of the Creation by God?
    6. Then why is he subject to god like we are subject to him? (1st Cor. 15:27,28); (Eph. 1:17)
    7. Then why does (Micah 5:2) say that Jesus Origin was from Early times?
    8. Then why does Jesus not know what God knows? (Matthew 24:36,) (Rev. 1:1); (Luke 8:45)
    9. Then why is Jesus still subject to (God) when he is as high as he will ever be? (1st Cor. 15:27,28)
    10. Then why does (Proverbs 8:22-31) show that the Messiah was created/Produced by God?
    11. Then why is he not powerful enough to subject things to himself? (1st Cor. 15:27); (Eph. 1:17,22)
    12. Then why would he have to be given any power & authority? (Matthew 28:18; 11:27; (John 5:22; 17:2; 3:35;) (2nd 1:17)
    13. Then why did he have to learn anything? (Hebrews 5:8), (John 5:19; 8:28)
    14. Then why is speaking against him not as bad as speaking against the Holy Spirit? (Matthew 12:31, 32;); (Luke 12:10)
    15. Then why did Jesus Call the Father the Only True God? (John 17:3)
    16. Then why did he need to be saved? (Hebrews 5:7); (John 12:27)
    17. Then why did he have to be exalted to leader & savior? (Acts 5:31)
    18. Then how can he be exalted and (Given) a higher name then he had? (Philippians 2:9-11); (Hebrews 1:2-4)
    19. Then why did he have to be given Life in himself? (John 5:25, 26)
    20. Then how could his Father be Greater then he and not equal trinity? (John 14:28)
    21. Then how could Jesus be tempted by Satan in(Matthew 4:10) when God cannot be tempted by Evil (James 1:13)
    22. Then why did Jesus (Worship) the Father (John 4:22)
    23. Then why can he not do anything of his own? (John 5:19; 6:38)
    24. Then why would Jesus pray to Anybody? (Luke 22:44; ) (John 17:1,2)
    25. Then why do John 1:18 and 1st John 4:9 say that Jesus is God's only Begotten Son?
    26. Then how can Jesus be God's servant? (Acts 4:26, 27,30)
    27. Then how could he receive strength from an angel? (Luke 22:43)
    28. Then how could he be the mediator between God & man? (1st Timothy 2:5)
    29. Then how could he be with God (ton theon)? (John 1:1)
    30. Then how could he be God's image? (Col. 1:15;) (Hebrews 1:3)
Then why is he called the agency (dia) of creation and not the originator (ek)? (1cor. 8:6); (John 1:1-3); (Prov. 8:30) (Hebrews 2:10); (Col. 1:15, 16)
    32. Then why did Jesus say God was good in a way that Jesus was not?(Mark 10:18)
    33. Then why does Jesus have the voice of the Archangel and not the voice of God? (1st thess. 4:16)
    34. Then why is the only worship given to him the same given to humans ? (Heb. 1:6) (Matt. 18:26;); (Rev. 3:9)
    35. Then why do many who believe and rely on a few so called proof texts instead of the context of the consisent teachings of the entire Bible?
36.then how can Jesus be commanded to do anything? (John 12:49), (deutronemy 18:18)
    37. Then why did Steven see 2 separate entities God & Jesus and not just one god or 3 person's? (Acts 7:55)
    38. Then how could Jesus be seen at God's right hand?(Luke 22:69); (Acts 7;55); (Romans 8:34)
    39. Then how could Jesus be exalted not to become God himself, but to the position of the right hand of God?(,Acts 2:33)
    40. Then why would he have to receive a revelation from God?(rev. 1:1)
    41. Then why is he called God's begotten Son before he came to Earth? (John 3:16); (Galations 4:4), (1st John 4:9)
    42. Then how could he have a father (John 20:17)
    43. Then how could he come in Flesh? (1st Kings 8:27); (Acts 17:24, 25)
    44. Then why did Jesus not come in his own Name? (John 5:41-44)
    45. Then why did Jesus come down from Heaven to do God's will and Not His Own? (Luke 22:42); (John 6:38) (John 5:30) (John 8:42)
    46. Then how could Jesus appear before God when he went back to (Heaven)? (Hebrews 9:24)
    47. Then how could Jesus die? Can God die? Can part of God die? (Romans 5:10); (Acts 5:30); (Habbuk 1:12); ,(1st time. 6:16); (Numbers 23:19) (1st Cor. 15:3); (Plsams 90:2); (Daniel 6:25-26)
    48. Then why is it that God ressurrected Jesus? (Acts 2:32) (Acts 5:30)
    (Romans 10:9,10)
    49. Then why can we see him if No Man has seen God at any time? (John 1:18)
    50. Then why is there not one clear scripture where Jesus is called God the Son, (Equal to those declaring God the Father)
    51. How is it that the Jews rounded up some false witnesses to make up lies to obtain a death sentence for Jesus, but niether the Jewish officials nor even one of those false witnesses made a claim that Jesus was God or Equally god? (Matthew 26:59-67)
    52. John summed up his whole Gospel by saying that it was written that we may believe that Jesus is Christ, the son of God. Why is there no mention in that summary of the entire Gospel of what would be the Most important thing of all that Jesus is God? (John 20:31)

Around 6:30 in the video, I began to wonder however, if God reproducing his image in the form of the Son, does not contradict
in some way the everlasting concept of the Trinity which we believe has had no beginning? If God reproduce a perfect image of himself at one time, and this later became Jesus incarnate, than does that not also mean that technically Jesus the Son of God had a beginning?

One way of looking at the Trinity is as follows: If someone holds up an index finger it signifies what we think of as one. If we were to remove the knuckle from that finger, it would no longer be complete. Just as three knuckles form one finger, whole and complete, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit comprise One God, as Trinity. Peace and All Good!

I'd be interested to hear how the doctrine of the trinity and the idea of the divine simplicity can both be true. How have these been reconciled by theologians? If the divine nature is truly simple, immutable, etc., how can there be such "communication" between what seem to be "parts"? I've heard some people respond to this question with answers like, "It's a paradox" or, "our finite minds simply cannot comprehend it", but it's hard to see this approach as anything other than a cop out. I'd love to hear your perspective, Bishop Barron. I'd also love to hear what viewers think.

    • @tomasdadamo6481
      @tomasdadamo6481 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for your perspective. To an extent, I agree. At the same time, however, we do make claims about God's nature based on reason, which help to bring more light to our understanding to particular aspects of God's self-revelation . I think Aquinas' argument for the divine simplicity is an example of this. I also think the Bishop's explanation above regarding the trinity is another example. I hold both to be true.
But if we are going to make any such statements--and I think we are and ought to--I think we also must assume responsibility for them. Thus, when multiple statements we make about God seem incompatible, I think it is important to interrogate our terms more closely. To retreat to a kind of agnosticism regarding the ontology of God when we have already made strong statements about it is to not take responsibility for the validity of those claims.
Also, regarding self-revelation, I think there is an argument to be made that all understanding is the self-revelation of God's logos in all existing things. I don't think we can account for the intelligibility of being any other way. Traditionally a distinction can be made between "special" revelation in Scripture and "general" revelation in nature, but ultimately all is "self"-revelation. So all theology is the product of our interaction with God's self-revelation, no matter how abstract the argument.
I am happy to hear critique of my perspective on this. Also, please do let me know if I've misunderstood your point above.

    • @ikkinwithattitude
      @ikkinwithattitude 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I'd integrate simplicity and Trinity this way:
      1) Nothing which is too simple to exist can exist.
      2) Anything which possesses no capability to affect anything which exists cannot be said to exist. (In other words, communication is inherent to existence.)
      3) By definition, God exists eternally, prior to the existence of anything other than Himself.
      4) Therefore, God must must contain within Himself the capacity to affect/communicate with Himself.
      4) If God is able to affect/communicate with Himself prior to the existence of anything else, He must also contain within Himself the action which causes that effect.
      5) Therefore, God must contain at least three elements -- cause, effect, and action.
      6) Therefore, a Trinity is the simplest entity which can exist and fulfill the philosophical requirements of God.
Now, if you're wondering how it's possible for communication to be simultaneously eternal and capable of acting within time, that's where the concept of a divine Logos comes in -- an ordering principle need not change to result in different results over time (just load up a video game disc to see that concept in action). And, for what it's worth, the Logos (as the second divine Person) is consistent with simplicity in much the same way as the Trinity is -- existence as we know it simply wouldn't function without it.

My way of explaining this? God is simple. We are stupid. If god so chose to reveal the intricacy of the trinity, heck even of himself, it would make utter and perfect sense so much so we'd recognize it as more simple than water. It is not complicated, it is a mystery. Try comprehending the concept of a multiverse with me. Or how about a world where men don't exist. Pretty hard huh? What would that be like? How would everything work? But now, we can comprehend both a little. Because we are surrounded by the universe and men do exist (I think I exist). Both are things we regularly interact with on a physical level. But god? No man see's the face of God. We barely understand "God" we imagine him as an old guy with a white beard, but that's never said in the bible, is it? Or how about heaven as a place with a gate and clouds? I believe we know there is a gate, but clouds? Not at all. Human imagination. Now is there anything in the world like the trinity? Not even close. However that works is simple. I don't know why or how, but I don't think anyone accepted the faith because of the trinity. It's something you accept is true because the opposite is unsupported in scripture and well... faith. Trust me, everyone from Saint Patrick to not Bishop Arius learned this one the hardway. It's a mystery. We can understand it, but only if God told us. Because he's the only one who knows. Kind of like anyone else, only they know themselves well enough to explain themselves

    • @jurisprudens

The Divine Persons are not "parts". God has no parts. The Persons are more like "faces" or "sides" of the incomprehensible essence of God. Remember the fable of three blind men who were touching the elephant? One touched the trunk and said that the elephant was a "rope", the other hugged its leg and called the elephant a "column", the third one touched the elephant's side and called it a "wall". They are all correct - the elephant is all three of these things, remaining, however, one undivided elephant. In the same way, God reveals Himself to us in three ways.

I have been struggling to strengthen my faith. Also, what always bothering me is the images of Saints including Jesus. Where did it come from? I mean Jesus and his desciples lived 2000 years ago. How did they get painted? I doubt painting was already there at the time of Jesus.

One question I have about the idea of Jesus's equal divinity with God and The Holy Spirit is this; in the New Testament Jesus is described as clearly possessing human qualities, such as sorrow and anger, and more than once expresses rather plaintively his lack of understanding of issues that it seems would obviously be understood by an omniscient creator. He's also spoken of as growing in his holiness and understanding, I believe. I know there is a doctrinal reconciliation of the limited human qualities of Jesus with a perfect and immutable creator, but I've never completely understood it. This probably has more to do with my own limits than with a faulty explanation, but it's something I haven't been able to get past. Anyway, I greatly enjoy your videos, and I hope the spirit of this comment doesn't seem adversarial.

Are sorrow and wrath limitations? Jesus said Himself, "Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be consoled." Humans do not like to deal with displeasurable circumstances, so we think that it is bad to be sad. But on the other hand, we intuitively know the importance of mercy, and mercy literally means "miserable heart," as in the heart which is strong enough to take on the misery of others. Most of the confusion about Jesus' dual nature has to do with our own limited understanding of our own nature as humans. Keep looking at what you are and where you come from.

Sorrow and wrath would certainly count as limitations in a divine being. How could a perfect and immutable God be subject to any limitation, especially limitations as obvious as human emotion?

Human emotions are not imperfections. Wallowing is not good, but feeling is a part of how you are made. Wallowing in anger or sadness becomes sinful in its self-indulgence. But feeling sadness is as essential to understanding the nature of your life as is feeling joy. If you are not a Christian and you are wondering about this question, I can only point you to reflect on the true nature of your life. Being in a perpetual state of equanimity is not the same as an absence of feeling -- and I find people only have a problem understanding this when they are too focused on the faculty of their own intellect; i.e. philosophy can only help you understand up to a point. --- If you are a Christian, I point you to St. Faustina's diary, where Jesus Himself explicitly imparts to the world through St. Faustina that He is "Love and Mercy Itself." Mercy naturally flows from the nature of pure love. Mercy means "misericordia," or "miserable heart." This kind of misery is not imperfection, but the perfection of virtue. Only the most virtuous are strong enough to take on the sorrow of others, for the sake of the world.

Trinidad Molina Our emotions are assets, not limitations. They help to frame what matters and paint our understanding of the world. Without them, we literally have no way to care or make meaning.

Trinidad Molina Perhaps that is why there is a certain spectacular but terrible tragic beauty when one hears of a person suffering and making a truly selfless act even through undeserved suffering. Mercy is the purest expression of love and the most beautiful thing humanity can conceive, but mercy should never be made to be pummeled into showing its depths. For the deeper it must, the more something ought not have to be. I'm other words, it is incredibly beautiful to behold, but it should never come to that extreme.

We were made in gods image 🙏 The father= God the son= Christ the holy spirt= the love of man the spirit and love we have for god... a lot of these interpretations separate us from god I believe that’s not what god wants at all he wants us to wake up and realize how special we actually are in that trinity 🙏🙏🙏

Thank you, Bishop for you wonderful videos. I always enjoying watching them. Here is a question I have about this one: You said that the Father generates an image of himself. Does this mean that you believe the Father came before the Son and somehow formed the Son?

Well said! It always seems that priests struggle with this in their homilies. Maybe you could work with priests in your region on improving homilies, such as this?
