"I spent my youth avoiding eye contact with most of my straight male classmates just to be able to walk down the hallway in peace. It was during those years that I developed a deep, subconscious fear of all straight men - my bullies. I began lumping them all into a box, making sweeping assumptions that all straight men were violent and homophobic. After a decade of keeping them in this box, I was mortified to realize that I had become the bully and was perpetuating the cycle of abuse.
It was particularly jarring to make this realization in 2016, as our political climate grew darker. People were becoming increasingly polarized and my mindset wasn’t helping. To help make sense of it all, I searched for hopeful stories of unity and, at best, understanding. I WAS WRONG is my contribution to these themes and telling of the narrative work I hope to create: art that extends an olive branch between different schools of thought.
Poking fun at white gay men, masculinity and performative activism, I WAS WRONG is a cheeky exploration of cyclical trauma and a reminder that we often have more in common with each other than we might think."

I live in awe of trauma's power to create villains out of victims, myself included.
I wrote this following a period when I struggled to make peace with the more unsavory elements of my personality, most of which began as defense mechanisms against childhood bullying. I thought it might be therapeutic to create a character who poked fun at all the different parts of myself I wish I could exorcise and watch him get his comeuppance. And... therapeutic it was! 10/10 would recommend the experience lol.

Thank you, this was really clever. I’m going to watch again with my husband tonight. The only thing I didn’t understand was why the older brother wouldn’t hug his own little brother in the opening scene? I especially loved the last few seconds, those bros forgave and moved on real fast - and the actors deserve a lot of credit all-around, although especially in that scene.

Great stuff! Cringeworthy realistic! Pete‘s teenage years traumas obviously still sticking with him leading to resenting/cutting out his brother for probably teasing him back then. Classical „moving out but not on/leaving behind yet carrying it all the way“ scenario. The upcoming car crash was kinda predictable from the start, but it was well written and really well acted! Loved the twist about the straights being a lot more complex than what you‘d give then at first glance. We tend to think our somewhat more complicated life gives us a higher ground in understanding life‘s complexities but then again we‘re just as narrow-minded and prejudiced as everyone else. We just have different prejudices. I did not really miss them being apologetic about what happened 15 years ago, but loved the fact they were totally at ease with their buddy being a) gay b) a sexworker. Shows the power of friendship can be damn strong. And I love the fact that Pete’s bubble kinda burst a bit and he came out (no pun intended) being a lot rounder as a character than he went into the night.

Odd and disheartening that the gay guy is the only one who is one-dimensional -- and the only one who apologizes.
I found it refreshingly comical that the gay protagonist was the only uptight dislikable guy in the group! And straight boys get bullied by their older brothers too.

I understand where the main protagonist was coming from. He was bullied by these guys and not one of them apologised and explained how they had changed. "We grew up" was a weasel phrase to place the locus of responsibility back on him. Is he supposed to be some kind of mind reader?

Watching this reminded me of a situation 40 years ago. I was a serious long-distance cyclist. I frequently went on long rides with James. I worked with his wife. I'm openly gay and socialized with them on occasion along with my boyfriend. Their younger son Ryan had finished high school, was away at art school and was in the process of coming out. James scheduled an all-day ride with me when Ryan was home for the weekend and complained to me that his son needed to man-up. I have few regrets. One of the biggest is that I did not call James out for what he was doing.
When Ryan graduated, he moved across the country and owns a successful business.
James died 5 years ago. Ryan was not at the funeral.

This should have been the title! I sincerely regret having watched it cause the movie belittles childhood trauma most gay people suffer from, saying that I disliked the movie would be an understatement!
This is purely enraging, nothing about this short movie is likeable. How does the victim end up being the one who apologises after all the childhood trauma they caused him? How on earth does he end up being the bad guy, the damage he caused is repairable but the trauma he suffered isn't! The worst part is that they end up kinda laughing at him, and show no shadow of remorse for what they made him go through, they should've at least acknowledged and presented genuine apologies to him, IN OTHER WORDS HE KEEPS BEING THE VICTIM WHOSE EMOTIONS KEEP BEING DISREGARDED!!
I was bullied and grew out of it cause i don't see the point on holding a grudge agaisnt someone i don't even know anything about anymore, i would really dislike to realize i turned like this guy cause i couldn't get over and stayed stuck in the past, it's not good for anybody

@@jacobmccain8794 how do you know it's torture? the dialog didn't reveal any details, it can range from teasing to bullying to abuse, the point is the audience can't know for sure. And the whole point of the film is not to make assumptions.
It's understandable he didn't move on. Most people who have been bullied for whatever reason want to be able to get revenge on their bullies if they have the opportunity. Gay or not I wouldn't say sorry for ruining his social media account. Once a bully always a bully. Only motivation changes. Most bullies don't realise the damage they have done.
Change gay to autistic, and there is my story. I didn't get to confront anyone except by mentioning it on the high school web page; no names, just what happened. I wrote that since MANY now have children and grandchildren who are on the Autism Spectrum, they won't want to make the same mistake! Some of the worst offenders are now deceased; I do not rejoice in knowing that. Quite the opposite: I can never know if THEY ever 'grew up.'

The subject of this short film is messed up, especially the part of the straight guy saying that the bullying bit is in the past. That is disrespectful for those have been bullied in their for being gay.

It feels like there was the potential for a really good story here but it got lost in the awkwardness. It was bad enough that the bullies not only didn't apologize but didn't even think they'd done something wrong but to finish the whole thing off with... them trying to convince Peter to have sex with one of his bullies, when he clearly still holds some resentment toward all of them, as payback? That shit's just creepy sorry.

As someone who was bullied in my youth for being gay, I have to say 11:40 made me mad. It's realistic but still aggravating. He tells them they used to bully him when they were younger and they play it off like, "It's called growing up", "ask anyone, there older brother and his friends fucked with them". I'm sorry but NO. You don't get to dismiss the torment you inflicted on someone else by saying boys will be boys or act like there anger is childish when in fact all they see when they look at you is an ignorant homophobic bully because of how YOU treated them. I'm sure to the brother who never defended him and sided with his bully friends it was nothing, but to the person being tormented, it was painful. It caused a rift with his brother and likely causes him anxiety when interacting with straight people. I just hate how it all gets played off like it's no big deal. No apology or acknowledgment. Again, realistic but still aggravating 😡

I think you need psychological help. It really is called growing up and quit resenting people, especially when they change their ways for the better. This is what happens when you hold on to so much resentment and never get over your problems, you live in your own victimhood mentality and blame everyone else for your problems. Seek help.
Yes they downplayed it very badly and gave absurd comparisons. Bullying someone for something that's not their fault and by which they aren't hurting anyone is unacceptable and not to be taken lightly this has and still is taking so many lives.
100% agree, and came here to say the same thing. There's a world of difference between horsing around doing stupid and dangerous pranks with friends, and making someone believe they are worthless inside in a way that stays with them. The protagonists pain and trauma is real, and his anger at those guys is totally valid, and the friends and brother totally dismissed it. They owe him a real and sincere apology for what they did. I don't think they could realistically move on and be friends without that.
I hate that statement boys will be boy. Or we were just kids, ect. It is now time 2023 time for my 50th high school reunion, I haven't been to one so far. I wanted to go to the 25th but the part that didn't won! So now it's time for the 50th, and I don't know if I can muster the energy to go or not. I have nothing in common with those people and the people I huge with probably won't be there either, that's just a feeling. I have meet and cared for there family members in the hospital through the years.

Okay! They All Need Group Therapy!
I like the idea presented here where some people (hopefully not the majority) in minority groups have been empowered and taught to stand up to such an extent that it becomes problematic as it inhibits their ability to know when/how to remove presumptions and assumptions. So, I like that the gay brother "was wrong" by assuming things without knowing the real truth (after all, we are not really taught how to deal with these things; we are inclined towards suppression to avoid confrontation). However, nobody (including the gay brother) took responsibility nor ownership of their actions including all the consequences of such. The gay brother, honorably, implicitly took responsibility for what he did and made suggestions of how to remedy the situation including being transparent enough about his discomfort about the suggested idea, and a resolution was made about hiring someone to play a "mature version" of a real story --- very nice idea. Yet, besides that resolution that emerged and settled within the short movie, there is a lot more happening there that needs to get addressed for the mental and physical well-being of the whole group; the whole society. Every single one of them has a lot of work to do on their "Personal Growth Journeys." Sincere, authentic, and genuine apologies are needed as part of forgiving oneself and others; trust can be constructed through transparency, respect, emotional regulation, and being allowed to be themselves again with each other; perhaps, boundaries need to also be established and respected; soul cleansing from old, dirty, rotten laundry desperately needs deep cleaning; and most importantly the consequences of actions (trauma, emotional and physical well-being, self-identity) must be address now that it emerged to the surface, which is an opportunity to discover and heal many wounds of the past, present, and future for the best. A lot of talk and even more emphatically listening is critical for this group to become everything they have the potential to become as per the ending.
Group Therapy should be concerned for a sequel.
This short film is literally toxic to me, like I had to come back to see if it would give me a nosebleed again or if perhaps it was a one time thing, but my hands are shaking, my heart is racing, and yep, I wish I never saw this. The description says that it's supposed to be a comedy, aimed at ending the cycle of bullying and what not. I'm thinking therapy is a much better bet. Back in school I had it pretty rough, I was humiliated in all sorts of ways for like 8 years. Did I fantasize about getting fucked by some of the bullies that would sexually harass me? Well I certainly wasn't going to fantasize about girls, and I guess I didn't want to be a monk. I didn't know any good kids. But say that I did have some completely unhealthy sexual fantasy about a school bully, living that fantasy would have destroyed me, surely I wouldn't be able to live with myself.
Yes, I also found this film revolting. I choose to avoid confrontation, but, when it comes, I take no prisoners.
As an older gay man, I find Eli's behavior completely cringeworthy and toxic, but I also wholeheartedly agree with others about the gaslighting. I'm a bit confused as to why Eli would've been there in the first place. If he hated them so much, why put yourself in that situation in the first place? Understanding the writer's impetus for work, that part seems irrelevant, but still. There's a reason I go for years without seeing my family.

I really like it for several reasons. 1-the story is timely and deals with real conversations. 2-the only fans reference, 3-gay men playing the gay roles -we get to tell our own stories and get some acting parts instead of giving them away. Well done. Love the cast also -especially Mikey and Nick

They should have apologized. The ending seems to come from a homophobic perpetrator’s perspective/fantasy? and not from the actual victim. A cop out from those who insists on “but I have a lot of gay friends” or “I have many black friends” and goes on to commit offenses that showcases the exact opposite.
Advice: If you find yourself thinking "It's right to do this to them becauce they deserve it", them most likely whatever it is you are about to do or say is very very wrong. Even in subtle ways

You can still see with one eye. I believe in karma whether I’m the one dishing it out or it happens naturally. To suggest that i am immature for feeling resentment from the torment a bully caused me is the same thinking that the bullies in the video display toward the victim. I hope you can one day grow enough to realize that actions have consequences and sometimes those consequences come in the form of “eye for an eye”. Sometimes that’s the only way to find healing.

11:40 The brothers friends could have said I am sorry for the bullying :/ There was a bully at my school who everyone feared. however i got to be friends with him . The reason why I became friends with him was to hide my own gayness as i seen how other gays got bullied and I didn't like what I saw. No would would think I was gay being plas with the most alpha , toxic ,masculinity guy in my school. a few months of being his friend one night at one of his house parties i got very drunk and high on weed. I passed out in his bedroom. soon afterwards I woke up with the pain of him trying rape my ass. I pushed him off me. He told me that if I told any of the other homies what he tried to do he would murder me. this proves that even the straightest most toughest and roughest masculine guys can be sexually repressed. i blame his father. as his father was a religious extremist who brainwashed his own son into believing two guys together is the most sinful of all. Religion is so fake. It stinks of lies. and hypocrites. I would never trust a faithful religious person. NO way. They use their religion usually to excuse their own inner demons which they don't want to confront. When I date people I usually ask if they are religious. when it's a no. It's a yes for me.
What people call religion is no religion. It is mostly evil stuff as you said. Religion means being connected.
If people have no religion they are materialists. Also evil. They don’t take responsibility. So we need something in between. Religion by heart not by rules. Great story. I can relate to some of the actions exhibited by the younger brother. I must also mention how 11:45 - 11:55 made me so angry, just brushing aside his trauma and not apologizing for what they did to him.
Thinking about why I felt such anger made me realize that to keep myself safe I have distanced myself from people who have treated me harshly and haven't bothered to keep up with their lives. The idea of maybe one day meeting them again to discover that they have grown and become healthier people and then they expect me to brush off what they did will be difficult.

As someone who was bullied similar to those who have commented here, I have a bit of a different reaction to the story. I'm in synch when it comes to the group trivializing ownership of the pain they have caused. At the very least since they've "grown up" they might have apologized for the suffering they'd caused, even acknowledging that once they knew better they've attempted to do better.
But the part that really gets to me is the instant and unbridled revenge by the gay character. It encapsulates the worst of this connected world we live in, the ease with which we spew hate, the cancel culture, and the impact of trolls/haters on sometimes innocent people.. What might have happened if he had taken the guy aside and (even in anger) and asked "WTF?" We see others through our lens, distorted by our experience, and more often than not being unaware of "the rest of the story."
Perhaps if he had asked, he might have not reacted so swiftly and perpetuated the bullying. Sure he could still be angry at the suffering he had endured, but maybe, just maybe he might have had some compassion as well. Compassion for the experience of someone who so hated himself, that he acted out inappropriately. None of this means he has to accept or even like the other, just that it might have provided him with some peace knowing that the hate he experienced was less about him than about the hater. BTW, I definitely hit the "like" because this made me think rather than get angry or cry.
Umm....this was a very annoying watch. Nice dialogue, didn't at all sound mechanical. I understand the message that the writer wants to convey (mind you it was not from the movie, but from the little write-up pinned on top of the comments) but trashy dialogue topics, honestly. However, the acting was good I don't know how, especially from the gay guy. I don't know but the whole thing just feels irky. Sorry, that's what I think. It felt a bit homophobic and VERY VERY AWKWARD. I don't know if thats what they were going for but hmm.......Anyway, bye.

i went to high school with someone who later became a famous gay porn star . he was never mean to me and we had a class together but his bio says he isn't from here but if you asked him he knows who i am .
The intro call really struck a nerve with me and was uncomfortably familiar. I think all Queer people have been there at some point. “These people are going to say really hateful things, but just be cool while they tear down your community.”

*Dear Tyler Cunningham, this film would've been so much better if Pete stood up for himself at the end, and called them out for not apologizing, nor realizing the pain and trauma that they have caused him. That would've made this film much more impactful. But it seems like you just wanted this film to be bleak and depressing instead of empowering. You even ended it with "I WAS WRONG" as if saying that we shouldn't be on Pete's side, nor sympathize with what he was going through here. I don't like this film because you're deliberately saying that those guys were in the right, and you let them win. Let's hope you make a better film next time.*
I almost feel like this film should have been longer to get more of the character development more. Maybe an extra 5 minutes. It's hard to sympathize with both sides when they each have valid points. IN the end - don't mix emotions and alcohol. yOu'll make a fool of yourself somehow. All in all - I dug the film. I still enjoyed it for what it is. 8/10.

Sometimes brothers can be a pain in the ass, but I would never had let anyone to bully my younger brother ever, like his older brother did, damn!!!! I'm so pissed off.

I thought it had good nuance and some interesting perspective on how you never know exactly what a person's final product will be in life. My high school bully and I are both out and good friends now.
What an interesting film. Although I might be the only one who’s actually satisfied that he got the chance to tell those dudes that he’s pissed how they bullied him and now they’re “cool with having a gay friend”. And I propably would have done the same thing to his best friend.
Sure it was wrong in the end, but I think they all deserved what he called them out for.
Still, I also think it was needed that he fucked up and felt the immediate consequences. Sometimes, you do get presumptuous yourself just to get back at presumptuous people, and that’s always wrong.
All in all, a great story that a lot of people can relate to and maybe learn from.
A true millennial wouldn't admit he was wrong or would say "I'm sorry." This movie fails.
No, see. The problem here is that "poking fun at gay white men" is standing in as an excuse for justifying political regression. "Poking fun at gay white men" (especially out of a fear of violence from straight or closeted bullies), doesn't require sexist drunk baiting, conspiracy quoting about antifa, or reduction of BLM to "I draw the line at looting," which is what the screenplay establishes. This isn't a film about being prejudiced due to masculinized violence--it's a reflection of the trauma. The main character seems to drink more than anyone else (alcoholism as coping) and the way that this film is ostensibly LGBTQIA+ but actually not (from someone claiming to be gay) pretty exactly mirrors the position of the film's sex worker, who is the most handsome, and certainly the least dickish in terms of behavior in the film itself, ... i.e., the apparently film-maker's wish-fulfillment. It's really hard to see what "exorcism" is happening here--what part of the brutalized gay kid projected in this film needs being ganged up on by his abusers, pardon, I mean "poked fun at." There are plenty of ways to express how "the left" over-does it at times, but this is not the way. Why live in awe of trauma's power to create villains out of victims? Why not live in awe of human resiliency not to become an apologist for white male wounded victimhood (whether on 6 January or in Gaza now).

I just dont understand why many gay men feel they need to expose or shame someone like that in public. I had a friend once wanted to "out" his closeted ex-bf to his family because he got dumped. I had to talk him out from doing so. Gosh!! Mates, please dont do that. People are at liberty or have reasons to do what they do. Just as long as they dont endanger or harm us. Be nice. Having said that, I dont mean bullying of course, that is NO EXCUSE !!
"it's called growing up" no it's not. Growing up means you chane yourself for the better, that means fixing your past mistakes and not just shrug it off. The worst person here is the brother because he obviously care more about his friends than his little brother who were bullied by them. My brother messed around with me when I was a kid, but he never involved his friends. And as we grew up, he became very protective of me and took care of me when he can. Just because other brothers being a POS to their kid brother doesn't justify your action for being a POS to yours either.
