Breadwinner, not a contest. So much intense emotional storytelling from a point of view that not many people in the world think of when talking about the events of that story. I love it to death and absolutely recommend you watch it sometime.
@@fuffofox You can follow Wolfwalkers pretty well since they kinda explain/show what the world is, while Song of the Sea kind of expects the viewers to already know Irish folklore. Didn't really bother or confuse me since I assumed it is most likely based on folklore. But those who aren't used to it would be confused
To be honest, I don't totally blame Grandma from wanting to take her grandchildren with her. Her son is clearly in not the best state of mind and while we as the audience see a magical moment between Saorise and the sea lions, it would actually be really terrifying experience to find out that your little granddaughter went swimming ALONE in THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT while your son was getting drunk at a pub.
This was really heavily based on "The Selkie Wife" or "The Selkie Bride", which is a traditional folk tale in parts of the British Isles (particularly Scotland). Like most folk stories, it has many variations, but, generally, it goes like this: A fisherman spots a group of selkies (a type of seal-like fairy that could turn human by removing their skin), and then coerces a beautiful selkie into marrying him by stealing her skin while she wasn't looking (she's all "Give it back! I can't return home without it!" and he's all "Well, I have it and you're gonna do what I say. And I say you marry me."). So they get married and have a bunch of kids, all while he's got the skin safely hidden away. Then, through one means or another, the selkie finds the skin and immediately leaves. Some versions have her say a final farewell, or reveal that she was already married to another selkie, or have her sometimes visit while everyone's asleep and leave presents on the children's birthdays. Most versions insist that, despite everything, the fisherman and selkie had a happy marriage - with them getting along quite well, and the selkie genuinely loving her new family.

I relate to this so hard. I recently found a video on my phone and it was specifically just the lullaby because I loved it so much back then. Definitely just a fever a dream now I need to go back and watch this. But I do remember loving this movie.
I had this moment too, remembering tiny moments and a single melody that I could hum but not know the words, leaving it a mystery for me. Years later in my junior year of high school my sister watched it and I looked at the movie in confusion and happiness knowing that I knew the melody
Every time I see a movie that I’ve seen on one of your “Ever HEARD” videos, I get excited, and when I haven’t seen it, I get curious. Either way, I click.

My little sister has been obsessed with cartoon saloon animations since this came out. I definitely know this as her childhood movie and has dreamed of having a selkie coat to swim away in all the time. I like how the art has also influenced her art and made it more elegant over time. Nothing wrong with my little pony art but it was fun to see a evolution.
Now that Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, and Wolfwalkers are branded as the Irish Folklore Trilogy, I actually swap Wolfwalkers and Song of the Sea in the viewing order. They were all created as standalone movies but if we consider them a series, making that switch puts it in chronological order. Song of the Sea's ending is also a better capstone when you look at the themes of how all the fae creatures interact and are impacted by humanity. From having complete dominion over all outside of small human settlements in Secret of Kells, to being pushed back and needing to migrate and relocate as civilization expands further into their territory in Wolfwalkers, then finally the state we see in Song of the Sea. People have claimed pretty much all of Ireland with the fae only persisting in small hidden pockets among us in places like the center of roundabouts or in the sea. So many of them were turning into stone and becoming inanimate as a result of their sadness and Macha's influence. Then there's the climax where all their spirits are set free and they depart to their own world leaving only a few remnants behind. It's a kind of melancholic ending but also beautiful.
This movie is honestly one of my favorites and when I showed it to the kids I babysit, it was the only time that I have seen them be quiet for an entire movie and it was wonderful. They loved it and the oldest asked for a selkie coat for her birthday which I made for her and it has made her love seals along with her favorite penguins. I think this movie showed them that it was okay to feel their emotions and not bottle them up like they are thought to in school. For that I think it’s a great movie.
I freaking LOVED everything about this movie when it first came out. The graphics, the characters, the designs, the songs, the stories. It made my overly big imagination as a kid take off. I'm DEFINITELY gonna rewatch this today, thanks for reminding me about it
The grandma actually showed a couple more times of bottling up emotions. She told Ben to stop crying , and I think there was a medication scene ? Could be interpreted as so. Correct me if I’m wrong however
I remember watching this movie when I was younger, but I was too young to comprehend much of what was happening, so this is like a little piece of nostalgia.
It's debatable whether Saiorse's decision was logical/hard or not. On one hand she has a family that still kind of needed to be put back together and is the one of the only remaining parts of her mother that have. On the other hand, she gets a chance to live a life in the magical world and get to know her mother. I understand why she chose Ben and Conner, she's known them all her life and they do sort of need her. But it we can't help but wonder, why can't the magic world and human world be tangled? Because that's kind of the main thing about this scene, once she chooses she won't be able to interact with the other. And to think this is placed on a six year old it's a bit too much. I wonder what would happen if she chose to be a selkie.
I think the reason why humanity and magik cant be entangled is because either our world right now is too advanced or fragile to understamd the magic, or it just wasnt ment for humanity
i really remember watching it vaguely when i was still in kindergarten, yes i am very young back then, through the years i became invested finding out the name of the movie but gave bc i cant find it... A few days ago I found out the name of this film, and of course, I couldn’t help but watch it one more time. I was enthralled. Amazed. It was if I was watching it for the first time. Something that will always stick to me about it is the visuals, as a kid the emotional scenes didn't hit that much, but now I would absolutely rewatch it for the real feels!
I'm a massive Cartoon Saloon. As someone who his interested in animation and is from Ireland this is my favourite movie of all time! It's so calming and beautifully animated, I'm glad you are reviewing it! Edit: 8:16 Those are nettles! They hurt a lot and produce a non-fatal toxin! Saosie uses doc leaves to make him feel better because they're a natural cure for nettle stings!
Ever watched Bartok the Magnificent? Bartok, the endearing albino bat from Anastasia, returns in Bartok the Magnificent, his own animated musical. It was a childhood favorite of mine.
I haven’t watched this movie in so long and yesterday I was trying to find it and gave up till I see this and another thing if you have ever seen River Dance the you will understand, Bens voice also sounds like the main character from River Dance I forgot his name but ya they are both such good movies

I REMEMBER OH MY GOODNESS!! This was a part of my childhood I’ve always loved!! I could never remember it’s name or parts of it. But I can see all the memories ALL THE NOSTALGIA AHH
this film is really important to my family as we watch it over and over again its my mother's favourite animated movie ever and carton saloon is criminally underrated.
Strange they chose owls for Macha, as she's more represented as an ancient Horse Goddess (usually a Moon-White or Silver-Gray Mare) but owls represent wisdom so therefore all the older women in this film are intentionally drawn owl-like, not just Macha and the Grandmother. Macha's real bird symbol is Crow. ...Another not-so-nice possibility is that (as what often happens in selkie tales) the father trapped the selkie to marry him at first. The mother had to find the key for the chest he kept her seal-skin in. Clues to this possible past is the original key mounted on the wall. Looks like she grew to love him but still had to go back for her health.
Alright, I need to say a couple of things: 1) Great video Ros Mo!❤ As always, you made it funny and enjoyable. Nice work.👍 2) I found out about this movie 5 years ago when I was searching on Google about animated clips, and one of them was a gif of Ben smashing Saoirse's face to the cake.🎂😂 3) Conor reminds me of Flint🤠 from Mother 3. He used to be a loving, caring father, but after the lose of her wife and older son, he spent most of his days at trying to find Claus and visiting Hinawa's grave. But at the end, he finally leaves his sad past to be the father Lucas once remembered, altought this only last very few moments due to the awakening of the Dragon. 4) There is a little easter egg where Aisling (a character from another movie of Cartoon Saloon, The Secret of Kells) appears in the bus which Ben and Saoirse hop in. Or is the real Aisling or a girl with a really good costume due to Halloween.🎃 5) Right in this moment -> 5:35 - I can't help but laught at Saoirse's expression.😑 6) Happy birthday Ros Mo!🎉🎂
I just watched it for the first time in 5 years last night I love it so much! I remembered it all those five years just little clips in my mind Vividly. But just in nearly the end of 2022 I finally found the name of it I was so excited!!!! I missed it!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Yes, I have heard of it. The creators of Song of the sea also made The secret of Kells, and Wolfwalkers, and I would describe all three as Fantastic! I also like trying to spot the easter eggs they leave referring to their past films. For example, I spotted Aisling while watching Song of the sea, and I saw the eye of Krom in Wolfwalkers.

I'm a massive Cartoon Saloon. As someone who his interested in animation and is from Ireland this is my favourite movie of all time!
It's so calming and beautifully animated, I'm glad you are reviewing it!

Those are nettles! They hurt a lot and produce a non-fatal toxin! Saosie uses doc leaves to make him feel better because they're a natural cure for nettle stings!
I LOVE THIS MOVIE THANK YOU FOR REVIEWING IT 😭❤
I remember watching this movie as a child while I was in the hospital, gosh this was my comfort movie! It's so nice hearing people talk about it ;
spent five minutes pacing my room just seeing the thumbnail THIS MOVIE WAS MY CHILDHOOOOOOOD
that clip of ben begging not to be taken and his father yelling at him did not make my chest tighten and my eyes water what are you talking about??
Netheir did I. I just said I felt bad for him at that moment 😊

This was my favorite movie as a kid! Thanks for reviewing it!
I WATCHED THIS MOVIE WHEN I WAS REALLY YOUNG BUT I DIDN'T KNOW THE TITLE UNTIL NOW THANK YOU
Funny thing is I used to love that movie when I was younger
Ever watched Bartok the Magnificent?
Bartok, the endearing albino bat from Anastasia, returns in Bartok the Magnificent, his own animated musical.
It was a childhood favorite of mine.
I'VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR THAT GODDAMN MOVIE NAME FOR YEARS OMG
OMG, i watched this movie as a kid and ive been trying to find this again because i forgot the title 😢.
Song of the sea was my favorite movie as a child 😭😭 i loved this movie so much omggg-
I haven’t watched this movie in so long and yesterday I was trying to find it and gave up till I see this and another thing if you have ever seen River Dance the you will understand, Bens voice also sounds like the main character from River Dance I forgot his name but ya they are both such good movies
I'll be sure to check that out!
I watched this years ago with my siblings and cousins and I loved it so much!!!
I remember when I was little my dad had turned this on, I protested and protested, but when it turned on I loved it, soon forgot the name. And I thank you alot for recognizing this amazing movie.
I REMEMBER OH MY GOODNESS!! This was a part of my childhood I’ve always loved!! I could never remember it’s name or parts of it. But I can see all the memories ALL THE NOSTALGIA AHH
Song of the sea is my childhood movie🍿 and I still love it
I loved this movie, there was so much emotion and Caracter devopment in a beautiful art style with some of the best music in any movie.
I randomly took it out of the library a few years ago and I absolutely loved every minute of it. I haven't seen anything of it since
Song of the sea is one of my all-time favourites. I also suggest the movie Secret of Kells
this film is really important to my family as we watch it over and over again its my mother's favourite animated movie ever and carton saloon is criminally underrated.
Omg thats all so interesting thanks for sharing!! But if thats the case of the selkie, that would be so tragic 😭
I remember watching this at school, it was great!
Alright, I need to say a couple of things:
1) Great video Ros Mo!❤ As always, you made it funny and enjoyable. Nice work.👍
2) I found out about this movie 5 years ago when I was searching on Google about animated clips, and one of them was a gif of Ben smashing Saoirse's face to the cake.🎂😂
3) Conor reminds me of Flint🤠 from Mother 3.
Or is the real Aisling or a girl with a really good costume due to Halloween.🎃
5) Right in this moment -> 5:35 - I can't help but laught at Saoirse's expression.😑
6) Happy birthday Ros Mo!🎉🎂
Ahhh Song of The Sea was my absolute childhood! I loved the art and watching it when I was very young. Thanks Ros!!!
I also asked for this thank you!😁
I love your vids!
As an Irish person myself I'm so happy you reviewed this movie as well!
I'm glad that you know and love this film, since it's my favorite from Cartoon Saloon and one of my favorite animated films of all time
I just watched it for the first time in 5 years last night I love it so much!
For example, I spotted Aisling while watching Song of the sea, and I saw the eye of Krom in Wolfwalkers.
when i was 7, i watched this movie and loved it. TY SM! for making this video.
AAAaaa Song of the Sea is one of my favourite movies! I'm so glad you covered it, I've loved watching your "ever heard of" series 💙💙

I never watched the movie but I took an interest with this after one of our school magazines featured this as a topic for us to read and to reflect on the character's actions. Honestly I will give props to the person who made that article for us to reflect what happened in the movie.
Song of the sea is my absolute favourite by cartoon saloon!! As someone from Ireland it's just so beautiful aaaaaaaa, also her song and her singing dúlamán is just so relaxing ofmmffmmf beloved
This movie always gives me chills and tears whenever I watch it. I feel whole when I see this movie in a way few movies do
i LOVE cartoon saloon, i'm an animator living as a teenager in ireland and i look to it for inspiration often. might move to kilkenny and work there someday. as a kid, it was a magical experience watching song of the sea in a cinema, it was dubbed in irish and i watched it that way.
“Ever heard of song of the sea?” Oh yeah, it’s only been my fav movie for ABOUT 3 YEARS! (And a childhood enjoyable movie I’d ask my mom to put on every now and then. Wasnt my FAV movie back then, but I liked it!)
