I am a Ram 1500 owner with the 5.7. It has cylinder deactivation as well, called MDS, Multi displacement system, which is similar to AFM. I am surprised to hear that you can't turn it off and run on all 8. With the MDS system, either turning on the tow/haul mode or using the gear limiter will disable the MDS. I am surprised GMs system doesn't work similarly.
Just got my 2019 z71 in April and I love it. Even though I miss the horsepower of my 2013 Hemi quad cab, working in the Oil and gas industry actually benefits with the dynamic fuel system, especially when I'm driving from my home in Texas to Wyoming and Montana. I always find it interesting that Chevrolet base engines tend to have lower horsepower but last the longest(based on my observations)
I honestly haven’t noticed it yet because I still have the stock exhaust. I’m very impressed by the MPG that I’m getting with my Silverado. I’m averaging between 20 to 25 MPG. If it’s going to save me gas like that I honestly don’t mind it.
On the 2021 Silverado and Sierra with the 5.3 V8 , you can get the engine with code YK9-AFM/DFM DELETE with a $50.00 rebate and the start/stop delete for another $50.00 rebate. Now if that engine was on the Suburban/Tahoe and Yukon....

They can't put a button in the truck to deactivate DFM or AFM. The EPA won't give them "credits" for a defeatable fuel economy/emissions system. It's the same reason why some vehicles don't allow you to turn off the auto start-stop system that shuts the engine off when you come to a complete stop. They don't get credit for having it if the manufacturer lets the owner turn it off. AFM and DFM can be disabled. There are devices that plug into the OBDII port down by the hood release that will not let the engine deactivate cylinders. There are also tuners that can disable the system permanently. Either way, the engine will be in V8 mode permanently and you will never have a chance of a lifter issue. AFM and DFM are a lot more reliable than they used to be. The primary way they fail these days is by waiting too long to change engine oil. Dirty oil causes the vast majority of lifter issues. It's similar to the most common ways Ford engines develop problems... dirty oil clogging up the oil feeds for the cam phasers and lash adjusters. People buy expensive full synthetics that tell you it's good for 10,000 miles. It's far better for the engine to buy cheaper syn-blends and change them every 5,000 miles.
In my 2014 i can keep it out of AFM mode at all times, by putting the gear shift in manual mode and leaving it in 5th gear, instead of 6th. Can anyone with a 2019+ confirm that works with DFM?
I just brought one of these and I did want something that was more fuel efficient than my03 s10 but the main reason I got a Silverado was wanted a v8 engine. It wasn't until I test drove it that I realised it didn't roar like a v8 which honestly I'm a bit sad about

It will have the same sound as a Corsa exhaust so it will be a lot louder than stock but not as harsh as a raspy cat back.
Kevin's Auto Channel did you ever find a 2019 range disabler
"cylinder deactivation technology and 17 different cylinder patterns" ...sounds like a very overly complicated, over engineered system that will be problematic and short lived with lots of repair costs... prove me wrong.
Dfm lifter sucks, $6000 repair, cam goes bad $9000, stretch fit belts, not even sure how to get the water pump off because 1st the ac pump has to come off and there’s no slack in the housing to get that off. Stay away from these trucks and this engine, to the engineers responsible? You have COMPLETELY screwed the buyer, enjoy your check.
Why are the trannys junk, they should last longer than 32 k unlike mine new off the lot
The 5.3 and 6.2 engines are dropping lifters and bending push rods at 5000 miles on the 2021 models. It's a shame how bad the quality control is getting.
My 2008 silverado ran from 100k when I bought it now its at 360k and it just dropped a lifter last month, wich I will be fixing I love that truck it's worked alot In itife and has had no problems, the truck was built not bought, it's hauled 100s of cord of firewood down dirt roads with no hiccups, the tranny is still solid, unlike the tranny in my 2017 5.3
All new Gmc cars and trucks shit nothing just problem dont buy it
Don’t like it
