That could be referring to where the driveshaft(s) come out of the T-case. But I’m not sure, would recommend getting some ramps and just looking around under there to see if it’s the actuator leaking or at one of the driveshaft entry/exit points
If it is electronically actuated and not a shift lever type like the GX I don’t think this will work because you won’t be able to rotate the actuator once it disengages.
I saw on where another You Tuber shows how to...remove the Actuator from a 4runner. He shows a small gear on the side ...that you remove allowing the actuator to side out. It's on TH-cam. The 4runner does have 2 rods.
Just a helpful comment. My 02 4runner had an oil leak from the top of the transfer case... Found out that the 4 wheel drive lever actuator flange plate gaskets failed. Caused oil seepage down the sides... 4 bolts hold down this flange. Easy to get to from the top. You will need to remove parts of the center console. Made new gaskets ..cleaned and installed..Upper leak issue fixed. Just saying...may help.
What year gx470 is this? I have a Sequoia with the same looking transfer case actuator but am wondering if it has the two rods you mentioned that prevents it from coming out or has the one like the GX. Thanks!
This is an 04 GX. Should be the same from 03-09 for the GXs. The one rod is for locking the center diff and the second rod is for if the rig needs to electronically select 4hi or 4lo. So if you twist an electronic knob or button or something, it needs that second rod in there. If the rig has a physical shift lever with a mechanical connection to the T case (like the GX) then it has the single rod.
@@justinbrownell5511 well the leaky transfer case was the least of my issues because my four wheel drive did not work the previous owner said that it slammed into four wheel drive automatically when they were driving and they never use the four wheel drive. I ended up sourcing a used transfer case locally for $1,000 with around 100,000 miles on it I installed that one and my four wheel drive is working now. It is quite a bit of work to drop the transfer case split it open disassemble the transfer case in order to fix the seals. Too bad there is not an easier fix that I know of
I'm about to do this to mine. My cousin works for Lexus and owns a GX (that has this leak) and didn't seem to know about this fix. Hopefully this can fix both of ours. Do you by chance have the part number for the inner seal that you didn't have to change in the video?
I watched several of these videos before attempting to replace this o-ring. Super simple job, didn’t even have to jack up the vehicle due to the high ground clearance. 12mm and 5/8” sockets with a breaker bar was all that was needed. Dealership (stealership?) quoted me $1400 to do this 1 hour job, and they have to go by “the book” and charge the amount given. Since it was a Toyota dealership, they told me it was like the Toyota actuator (which has two shafts and not the single shaft) and that their instruction was to “crack the case”. I told them they were wrong (why not get an actuator for the Toyota and the Lexus and compare?). I also sent them an email telling them to call up youtube and watch the videos. Never heard from them. Ignorance is bliss if you get to charge customers more money. Now, how do we contact the people that write “the book” and tell them they’re wrong?
Dealers don’t care. They’d rather catch ignorant fish who don’t know better. That’s why I make this information public. Hopefully people will save money
You’re correct! When I filmed this video that new shaft seal was still in transit and I had a road trip coming up. 3 years later, I finally changed it out: th-cam.com/video/ygjXbxY6QGE/w-d-xo.html
Pennychaser1 Since this is a rubber seal failure, the time it needs to be changed depends on your local conditions and driving habits. It is somewhat of a factory defect so it is not part of the normal maintenance schedule. You can look under the actuator and see if there is any fluid. If there’s not, you’re good to go, no problem.
On my 4 runner I had the same split on the vacuum hose. Cut the crack off the line, and reroute the hose to give you an extra couple inches. The tape fix will work until it gets wet.
Greg Z. Thanks for the tip that’s definitely a better solution. After a bit more research, I’ve determined that this is a breather for the transfer case actuator, so I will reroute all my diff breathers, and this breather into the engine bay in case I go through any water. Maybe I’ll do a video on that as well
I have a problem with my 2003 Lexus GX470 and hope you can help me. I recently took my car to my mechanic. He noticed that the transfer case had a small amount of metal shavings. Do I need a new case or can the gears be replaced? Everything that could possibly be fixed has been done. But, the transfer case metal shavings prevents me from traveling from Texas to New Mexico. Please let me know if you have a way to fix it. Thank you.
Hi Vincent, sorry you’re having this issue… unfortunately there is no way for me to know the best route to fix your transfer case just from reading that there are metal shavings. I’d have to defer to the mechanic who has eyes-on the vehicle. The gears can be replaced but the cheaper route is usually to find a functional replacement transfer case at a junkyard.

Here you go. I also just uploaded a rock sliders install video if you’re interested.
Does opening it lose its timming lapse?
Just a helpful comment.
My 02 4runner had an oil leak from the top of the transfer case...
Found out that the 4 wheel drive lever actuator flange plate gaskets failed. Caused oil seepage down the sides...
4 bolts hold down this flange.
Easy to get to from the top.
You will need to remove parts of the center console.
Made new gaskets ..cleaned and installed..Upper leak issue fixed.
Just saying...may help.
Also I can't move it until I put it on low ie Aux gear b4 it can move
Does anyone have the part numbers for all the seals including the ones he says he ordered just in case
Hey Tyler, here you go: www.ebay.com/p/1732896224?iid=264703999702
Thanks!
Jesse Clark, did you find a fix for your sequoia? I have a 2010 with the same leak. Hoping to not spend thousands!
Too bad there is not an easier fix that I know of
Awesome Channel!
I'm about to do this to mine. My cousin works for Lexus and owns a GX (that has this leak) and didn't seem to know about this fix. Hopefully this can fix both of ours. Do you by chance have the part number for the inner seal that you didn't have to change in the video?
I would recommend just buying this kit. It has all the seals you will need: www.ebay.com/p/1732896224
The link seams to just be for the o-ring. Any link on just the oil seal? Thanks
I sell these kits on eBay! Great video.
Post the link and I’ll pin it!
Was there other issues the leak was creating or was it just a leak?
No other issues, thankfully. The fluid level could have gotten dangerously low if I didn’t address the issue though.
Hello. Great, but with o-ring you must to replace the seal too, if not, you will have actuator full of oil..
You’re correct! When I filmed this video that new shaft seal was still in transit and I had a road trip coming up. 3 years later, I finally changed it out: th-cam.com/video/ygjXbxY6QGE/w-d-xo.html
Just did the same thing yesterday) 👍 Where are you from? My name is Oleg, i am from Russia, Novosibirsk
@@kaktusofftube Hi Oleg! Wow, Novosibirsk looks beautiful from the Google images. I’m Daniel from Huntington Beach, California, USA
Is this also called transfer case seal?
I think a transfer case seal would be the gasket that is in the middle of the transfer case. This is just the transfer case actuator o-ring seal.
Great job, you ever changed the other seals or this fixed your problems?
This fixed it. Never had an issue again. It’s been about 5k miles
@@lexus_offroad_adventures did you use synthetic oil or regular? Thanks again!!
Any update to the leak a few months out? Still good?
Thanks for the video by the way, just ordered the $12 in parts. Dealer quoted $3,700
Unbelievable quote. It’s perfect. No leaks. Actuator functions flawlessly. Glad I could be of some help!
@@lexus_offroad_adventures thank you again, just did it today and no leaks! My father in law helped a lot and it only took 35 minutes!
@@isaacmeyer5066 beyond stoked to hear this! Cheers
At what mileage does this happen? What function does it serve? Appreciate the vid
Maybe I’ll do a video on that as well
Excellent 👌

@@lexus_offroad_adventures Your answer is exactly what my mechanic said. I thought it would be easier. Thanks for the quick response. I’m a new subscriber.
just did it! way easier than i thought it would be. cent diff lock still works, hopefully i just didnt mess up the seals putting it back on :0
Nice work!
I have a 4runner and it's a 11.5 hr job😢
🙏🙏🙏
I have a car, a broad twat model 2012, I opened the double dynamo, and I did not know how to ride the double Dimno in you, a video clip of the installation of a double dynamo car.
Step no. 7 indeed😅😅🤣🤣🤣
Step number 8, have milk at hand

1/4’ short ratchet- not much torque
@@ketratech8165 haha yeah, I was pretty new to working on cars 5 years ago. Got a lot better over time just trying new things. I did an updated actuator seal replacement video btw. (That shaft seal that looked “ok” was not ok, and let in a bunch of fluid over time).
@@ketratech8165 here’s the link to the newer video: th-cam.com/video/ygjXbxY6QGE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ETFUxmaQUfM91EJ8
Thats not a cloth. Thats a Poptart. Lol
VERY FUNNY THIS.. YES THE BOX COMES OFF BUT BUT BUT GETTING IT BACK ON AGAIN IS IMPOSSIBLE WHITEOUT RIPPING THE NEW SEAL ON THE SELECTOR SHAFT AND MORE IMPORTANT GETTING THE TIMING RIGHT INSIDE THE BOX.. DONT DONT DONT DO IT ,, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.. TRANSFER CASE NEEDS TO COME APART TO FIX IT
Lol I just did the whole thing on video, the diff lock works fine for me to this day, and you’re saying it doesn’t work? Do you work for a Toyota/Lexus dealer or something 🤣 also, I have the links to a new selector shaft seal if you are worried about that. That seal is actually installed at the Actuator and doesn’t require the transfer case to be split. As for getting the timing right, you just need to rotate the actuator on like I show in the video. The gears will engage if you do it right
Gotta agree..with your comment.
The STEALERSHIPs hate us GEARHEADS, that prove them WRONG!!
Thanks for sharing.
YOU TUBERS ROCK !!!
My center diff is stuck on and won’t disengage. I tried pulling off the actuator but it won’t budge. Could it be because the center is engaged?
