Hey Riley - it's possible to pump on a regular skateboard but it's a bit different and a bit more tricky too. If you're starting out and are learning to improve your surfing too, I'd recommend a surfskate because the trucks are looser, the feeling is more similar to surfing too. If you're using the surfskate as a surf trainer, you might like to try to get a board which replicates that a bit more.
