  • MSCI's Global Head of ESG Research & Development, Dr. Oliver Marchand, journeys on a scientific trail of climate change from early 19th century France, when scientists first discovered the greenhouse effect, to a Hawaiian volcano in 1958 and movie theatres around the world in 2006, all the way to Paris in 2015 and, finally, to today, as the world commits to climate action.

We don't need net-zero emissions. We need "negative" emissions. We need to suck the CO2 out of the atmosphere at a rate faster than we're placing it into the atmosphere, and we have to overall lower the ppm to pre-industrial levels.
Really, there's three things we can do. 1, decrease our rate of burning fossil fuels so we don't cause economic collapses, but we still lower the burning of fossil fuels by 90% to 99% this century (there will still remain niche uses for gas & oil). 2, suck the CO2 and other greenhouse gasses out of the atmosphere, ocean, and directly at the industrial sites where CO2 and other emissions are produced at relatively high concentrations (example: straight out of the smokestacks of coal/gas power plants). Finally 3, increase the planet's albedo locally and globally to reflect visible sunlight into space in order to lower our local & global heat.

We didn't stop using TVs because we were forced to, and that would never have worked, an innovation came along. Green energy is great, but this isn't TV it's life and death, sacrificing ppl now for ppl later is not an acceptable position either.

What an eye-opening and moving film! We are the Unified Filmmakers and currently looking for short films about climate change for our next year´s festival. If you want to join our Festival, submit your film on FilmFreeway:

      What an erudite comment.
You do realize that CO2 isn't the only GHG right?

Even back in 1968 the fossil fuel companies knew about Co2 climate change being dangerous. The American Petroleum Institute commissioned a paper on it from the Stanford Research Institute which revealed exactly how important it was, yet the fossil fuel companies kept spouting bs about climate change not happening, or even being good for us. You've fallen hook line and sinker for fossil fuel company propaganda!

So you say methane gas causes global warming. Saturn’s moon Titan has more methane gas than 3 earths combined and Titan’s surface temperature is -290F. So with all of that methane gas on Titan, why isn’t Titan a second sun in our universe?

It receives significantly less solar energy.

Are you dumb or stupid? Less sunlight reaches Titan than Earth 😭😭😭

Venus is within the habitable zone of our solar system, and is only unbearably hot because of the greenhouse effect and CO2 there. This isn't methane gas, but it is an example of how the composition of a planet's atmosphere affects its temperature. About methane, nitrogen oxide and sunlight is necessary for the creation of ozone, which I'm pretty sure is what you're talking about. If there is no nitrogen oxide on Titan, and the sunlight is faint, then no ozone can be created. Additionally, the high pressure creates an opaque atmosphere, leading to what some call the "anti-greenhouse effect". This effect halves the effect of the greenhouse effect on Titan.
