Kita honestly showcased the most development in terms of performing throughout the show. She went from strumming the guitar with her whole arm in episode 5 to simply using her wrists like Bocchi and Ryo in this episode. Her improvising also shows how skilled she has become despite how much she tries to deny it.
32:40 That moment when Kita goes from calling Bocchi "Gotou-san" to "Hitori-chan" is huge! There's a reason so much emphasis is put on it. Kita is actually fairly formal, usually referring to the others by senpai or san. So her opening up and calling Hitori by her first name signifies how close she now feels to Bocchi. Also I think she's the only one to regularly use "Hitori". The other band members always call her Bocchi instead. This scene was also used as an example to help explain honorifics by Taenyan Japanese Academy. It's worth the 2 minute watch imo
Thank you for the react series! BtR was the one that made me found your channel, and also the first time to make me register twitch just to watch your stream I hope it gets a sequel because the next arc will be even more rock!
Another kinda cute thing about the characters referring to her by name instead of Bocchi is because the term hitori-bocchi is a shorthand for a lonely or solitary person. Them changing up how they call her shows not only that they've grown closer, but also redefines how she is presented to the world.
Thank you for this! I know the copystrike system must be a pain to deal with, so I appreciate the effort. Hope you'll continue uploading reacts in this channel for years to come.
Thank you for the insightful breakdown of the series! Found you while going through a bunch of reaction vid on the series.. and I find your method and style of commentary quite refreshing! Maybe it's a bit too much to ask, but I'll try my luck anyway; I would be genuinely interested to see your thoughts and character breakdown on the main characters from "My Teen Romantic Comedy is Wrong, as I expected" or maybe even the "Hyouka" series.
Hi Brady, I've been checking out your watch of this show after discovering you from your Disco Elysium series. I'm sure you get a lot of anime recommendations, but I think you'd really be able to get into Girls Band Cry in a lot of the same ways you did Bocchi - the subject matter is similar, both being band shows, but in the same way that Bocchi is great at creatively visualizinh the feeling of anxiety, Girls Band Cry is great at giving very frank and honest depictions of the ways that its characters are hurt and are learning to heal with each other. The main character, Nina, drops out of high school and runs away from home after a particularly severe bullying incident. She's anxious, but instead of retreating inward like bocchi, she directs her negative feelings outward into the world and tends to smoulder or explode when she isn't feeling well. Momoka, the other main character, is introduced as being mature and worldly, but as Nina gets closer, she discovers that Momoka is flighty, evasive, and projects her own inadequacies and fears onto others. And the cast continues to grow into a 5-member band where everyone is working through their own interpersonal problems around each other. The show has felt important because it really doesn't shy away from depicting lifestyles and social issues that japanese society/the japanese media industry in particular tend to consider unsavory to depict openly. If you want to give it a shot once Disco is out the door, there's an official english translation streaming on an indonesian streaming service, or you can get the most reputable fansub translation from NakayubiSubs. As of writing this, the show is about to release Episode 11 out of a 13-episode season, so it's a few weeks away from being finished. Really been enjoying your work and wanted to give you a heads up recommendation about a show that has come to mean a lot to me! Take care and hope you keep enjoying what you do ❤
It would be really interesting if you read the Scummy Bandman Bocchi manga on stream. It’s a fanmade alternate future with bad ending Bocchi, but surprisingly true to characters and with a good emotional journey over its short story.
There is something you described here that actually happened in an anime, World Dai Star, I won't say what it was to not spoil you, but something very important that you said it was just hinted here, explicitly happened in the last episodes of that anime.
Thank you for watching and analyzing, but you've missed A LOT in that episode. Kita's improvisation was the biggest character growth of the entire show, her power pose, glances to Bocchi, leading and supporting. Just think for a moment what it takes for a relatively new guitarist girl to make a perfect triangle stance in front of the entire school and start improvising on the fly! You should definitely re-watch that song, but look at the girls, not on the Bocchi. From the moment she broke the string to when she uses a slide. It was very impressive wordless dialogue, in their gestures, face expressions and through music phrases. Ryo was ready to move on without Bocchi solo, but immediately changed a phrase as soon as she noticed how Bocchi picked up that glass, then she nod at Nijika and Nijika responded with nod and extra beats. Very very impressive stuff, adaptation on the fly, all happened in 3-4 seconds. Don't neglect Kita's arc. It is arguably even deeper than Bocchi's.
I wouldn’t say it’s deeper, Bocchi had to work a lot harder in general to change, but in terms of her musical accomplishments Kita’s improved at an very impressive rate for sure
It's interesting that a lot of Bocchi's big growth moments are effectively her turning her reflexive catatrophizing into a weapon she can use. She's already constantly creating doomsday scenearios and imagining every possible way she could fail, so when she *does* seem to be failing, there's nothing stopping her from trying something bold that even the others wouldn't be able to do, because their mode of failure is "oh, man, this sucks, we'll have to do better next time" and not "the sky is already falling and this is the end of everything". She needs her friends there to give her that initial push and get into a situation where failure *can* happen, but when she is, she can use her imagination to see ways *out* of problems that nobody else can, just like she normally sees unlikely ways she's going to fail that nobody else does. Also, note that just because she's the main character, Bocchi isn't the only one massively growing here. Nijika and especially Ryo are relatively static most of the time, but Kita always had room to develop and a desire to do so, and we can finally see it clearly happening. Before, Kita wanted to use music as a way to get close to Ryo, but was unable to convince herself she truly could change herself enough to become a "real" musician and ran away. But now, she truly wants to become a better band member not for what it can get her extrinsically, but because it gives her intrinsic validation coming from herself that she's becoming someone capable of supporting Bocchi. This isn't the insecure need for validation that defined her relationship with Ryo and many of her other "extrovert" interactions with friends, but instead her seeing something amazing inside Bocchi that she wants *other people* to see, appreciate and validate her for as much as she does, and that new, more mature kind of want fuelling her growth. That makes her want to push Bocchi, which sometimes ends a little disastrously when she misjudges what she's ready for, like putting the spotlight on her this episode, but often gives Bocchi the impetus she needs to put herself forward despite her catastrophizing, and to try to live up to what Kita seems to see in her despite not quite believing it's there herself, like Kita submitting the performance application. Whether it's framed as a romantic Bokita relationship or otherwise, it's unexpectedly an example of an unhealthy or at least immature pursuit of validation (notice me, Ryo-senpai!) maturing into something much more healthy and which promotes growth in both of them.
Good points here, with a different point of view focus this could totally be Kita's show as easily as it is Bocchi's. I hope one day she gets a spin-off or something like Hiroi is getting.

Yeah this might be my favorite moment from the whole show honestly. It's great development for both of their characters.
"literally picking the glass with her FUCKING agents of change" is the most Euro Brady reaction I've ever seen
🤣👐

Fuck, even on fourth rewatch, this episode doesn't fail to bring a singular tear to one of my eyes.

I remember just how gratifying the finale was. This was truly a special anime
finally, episode 12 ❤
