Back in the day we got 12 inch glasspacks that were bigger diameter than exhaust. We would heat them up with a torch then drop them in water. That breaks the fibers and pretty much makes it straight pipe. We did this because you had to had to have a muffler for inspection. The shorter the glasspack the better.
Yeah I had a 94 firebird 3.4 v6 had true dues with no cats on it with 2 and a half tubing out on both side of the car with Short glasspack mufflers and it was like running open headers on that car the faster I go the Lowder it was
Haha my muffler rusted through so I straight piped that sucker. It’s pretty quiet at idle and I can get around pretty quietly and quickly doesn’t get really loud until like 3500 rpm definitely better than an muffler with a softball sized hole that rattled like a civ
Also, a larger length and overall case size (especially compared to the in/out diameters), the more sound control the mufflers have. While that may reduce overall exhaust sound volume, it also controls the sound better, so if you're driving a very stock vehicle (stock cam, intake, manifolds, etc) it helps it sound much better. Save the straightpipe for race vehicles that actually sound good untamed like that. If you want more sound volume but still want that smooth, powerful sound control, use a smaller version of the same muffler. Instead of a 30", use an 18" glasspack. Instead of a 4x9x14 Magnaflow, use a 4x9x11. Simple as that.
Lastly, tricks to reduce interior volume and drone: position X, H, or Y pipe either closer or further downstream (need to play with it for your particular vehicle & engine), position muffler as far back as possible (if you place muffler AFTER the rear axle, that results in a SIGNIFICANT drop in cabin volume (I have a video I did that personally on)), add a secondary X pipe or use a muffler like a Cherry Bomb Vortex which acts like an X pipe due to internal design, and is great for a true dual setup with a dual in/out configuration on a single muffler (my current daily has this setup and it's hardly louder than stock when idling and cruising. Moderately loud when you mash on it tho. I am using an X pipe and that CB Vortex dual in/out muffler for my setup, and it's perfect for your daily driver to keep exhaust levels conversation and music friendly while idling and cruising, and still within reason while accelerating).

@@getskared Please watch Engineering Explained's video on exhaust backpressure. It's an informative and simple summation of why that is inaccurate. The goal of a combustion engine is to remove used combustion gases as quickly as possible. If you have backpressure, it will do work against the motion of pistons, and will increase emissions, reduce performance, and fuel consumption, which is pretty self explanatory since your engine will have to work harder. This is why race cars have exhaust systems that are very loud and efficient as possible, because mufflers and catalytic convertors in a typical vehicle increase backpressure. I recommend doing some more research on how exhaust works and the effects of backpressure. Cars needing backpressure is one of the most common misconceptions about combustion engines, and is simply false. I used to think the same thing, and thought about how an exhaust system works and it didn't make sense. I did more research, and sure enough, it doesn't make sense. Remember, back pressure will fight back against the engine. A small amount of back pressure is helpful, because it creates a negative flow that will help to completely empty the combustion chamber, but it minimally affects performance and modern cars still have more backpressure than necessary (due to noise and emissions restrictions). You can always go wrong with straight pipes. No refined sound at all! My truck has 1 7/8 longtubes, rull 3 inch exhaust through mufflers. I can almost guarantee its louder than that thing and has an actual tonal quality to it.
I put glasspacks on my 87 chevy 1 ton dually, 454. It was ok, but after about UK they got better and better. The straight pipes i had earlier would pop a lot when you let off the throttle. With the glasspacks it didn't pop. I like the glasspacks better
Straight pipe sounds terrible. My V8 Colorado has headers and a 3" single exhaust with a high-flow catalytic converter and Flowmaster Super 44 on it, it's PLENTY loud and sounds very, very good. Not terribly disturbing at idle/low rpm cruise, but really bellows on hard acceleration. Straight pipe's illegal and too loud even at idle to not be obnoxious, I do a lot of camping in the bed with a topper and it's nice to be able to fire the truck up and get warm for a few without pissing everyone around me off. The only thing open exhaust sounds good on is race engines through open headers. I have headers and collector mufflers with short dumps on my woods rig, a 5.2 Grand Cherokee, and even it's too loud.
Unpopular opinion - I actually preferred the sharp, crisp sound of the straight pipe over the mumble off the glasspack. I feel it suits the application better on an old beat truck... On a clean daily or a family wagon the glasspack would probably sound less hick though.
Also, using a high quality straight-thru muffler like Magnaflow, Corla, Corsa, etc, the packing type and quality is better and will never blow out, keeping that new sound virtually forever, or at least the life of the vehicle.

Straigh muffler delete is sexy. But i would go with Glasspacks. Now heres a great questions. Whats the difference between Cherrybomb Glasspack VS Thrush Glasspack? Also when are you gonna get high flow cats? If your state doesnt require emmisions. When are you gonna cut off your cats?
I like the glass pack it just sounds better. If you want that louder more define sound get a shorter pack like an 18” or 12” pack you will have a little bit louder sound at idle but when you give it gas you will definitely hear that and some more popping also. But it won’t annoy anyone next to you at a stoplight. But when you take off they will definitely hear you. The straight pipe has never really sounded good unless you are at a track. But you made a good video of it.
I’ve been running my first 23” in length, 2.5” inlets with 3” bulb of that center of the cherrybomb glasspack, down to the trd sport muffler on my 2015 lifted Scion xB. For 4-5 years and it’s a perfect sounds for daily. And it sounds like what a TRD should sound like as a catback version exhaust that should came out from Toyota dealer. I love these cherrybombs mufflers/glasspack. Now I have a small exhaust leak on the welding so it hold up very well. But now I will get a full new carback exhaust by 2.5”. From Vibrant performance- ultra quiet resonator, down to the 12” length with a 3” bulb center of the glasspack, to the side exhaust. Something different and this will sound much deeper and more aggressive for daily. I don’t want an obnoxious loud exhaust. Just a perfect volume for my vehicles needs.🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Great video. Thanks for being thorough. Interesting choice that ultimately depends on preference and desire. For me, the glass pack takes it! I'd love to see a comparison video between brand new glasspack and well aged glasspack. Those straight pipes do pack a punch that's siiiiiiick!
If you want to be loud and growly, then straight pipe exhaust tubing is for you. But if you want to sound nice and clean and still have some noise then glass packs are for you. I personally like the glass packs better because they sound much cleaner than straight tubing
Growly, no. Poppy and blatt-blatty, yes. The glasspack growled. The straightpipe basically did V8 flatulating..... Equivalent as a V8 form of all the fart can Hondas out there. Farting loudly, but with 8 cylinders instead of 4. 😒
Depends ones preference..i like the Glasspack cause inside was dampening enough that one can hear the morn news and keeps the sound of Glasspack outside of truck..cause after awhile of driving str8 pipes and headers gets kinda loud and there are times one just wants to cruise easy .
The glass pack footage the grass and trees were all green. The straight pipe turned the grass brown and the leaves fell from the trees. I’m going with the glass pack. 😂 Great video by the way!
The Cherry Bomb sounded great on your truck. I’m thinking of replacing the mid-muffler “suitcase” with a pair of Cherry Bomb mufflers on my Dodge Durango w/ 5.7 Hemi. Great videos.
I definitely like the even roar of the glasspack and remidms me of my classic 70`s muscle car i used to have ; the straight pipe sounds to me like you got a leak or a hole somewhere in the exhaust system ,too much rattle and high pitch pops !...good comparison video, thanks !
Great video. My truck right now is straight piped, but I like the glass pack as well. The glass pack on my subs rumbled way more than the straight pipe.

I had a straight pipe on my 04 Silverado .... It was just a little to loud when I floored it. What I did was put a 12 inch cherry bomb on it and now it awesome !
I had the 12" one chamber cherry bomb exhaust with a turn down. Loved it. Trying a 25" thrust glasspack next week. I will see which I like better. Exhaust is cut off right now and with the hemi its annoying. But holy crap you get stares when you punch it lol
The straight pipe sounds very different in person. I heard it in many videos and did not like like. So when i cut off my stock muffler i went straight to a flowmaster super 10. When i got tired of that muffler i went muffler delete and man it sounds good. I now have a 3 inch cat back pipe i got from an 07 n up silverado at a junkyard (bolts right up and 99 to 06s have 2.5 piping) with and autozone 5 inch resonated exhaust tip in front of my rear passenger side wheel (side exit) and its the best exhaust soung iv had.
80% glass pack, 20% straight. From certain angles and positions, sometimes one was far more pleasant than the other, lol. Guess a person needs to decide which is more important to them. 🤷♂️

I straight piped my Tacoma sophomore year, let’s just say I wish I had known about exhaust dump valves back then. My new setup is a straight side pipe for looks and sound and a quiet old man pipe tucked under the bed (for the neighbors) that I can switch remotely
I had a 2002 6.0 that I ran straight piped for about a year. That goofy thing made a tremendous amount of racket. Finally had a Flowmaster 50 dual out installed on it after that by a shop and it was so much more pleasant to spend long road trips in.
I like the straight pipe. It seemed quieter inside the cab. I currently have the cherry bomb single to dual flat muffler. It's just way to loud in the cab. I just ordered a y pipe adapter. Thanks for the video
Cherry Bomb , growing up in the 70's . It was sweet sounding on hot rods. All my mufflers have been Cherry Bombs. Love that intimidating rumble at the traffic lights. If they can't see you , they can sure hear you coming..
Test - my innocent comment keeps getting censored for no good reason, I was gonna tell you a really cool idea for exhaust pipes, but I guess I'm just a terrible person
I prefer the sound of the strait pipe in place of the muffler over the glass pack. I think a lot of it depends on if you want the raw rumble and crackle sound or a little smoother lower growl. Both sound good in my opinion though.
@@jordanfindley7538 cut the muffler so far and I already like it and do not regret it whatsoever. Will now cut the rest and straight pipe it all the way to the back instead of dumping at the side

Haven't heard that sound in years! Back in the late 1960s My first car was a *1963 Ford Fairlane*, red & white loved that car! My dad's auto parts shop was sponsoring a race car and for some reason he decided to "soup up" my car's engine maybe because he was always working on that race car but in any case he decided to also add cherry-bomb mufflers. Every time I stopped at a light and a teenage boy came by, they'd rev their engine because those mufflers my dad added would go VROOM VROOM! When the light turned green I'd "pop the clutch" and zoooom I won! Ha-ha silly boys! Whatever my dad did to the engine it was super fast. Luckily I never got a ticket maybe rural living helped, not many police on those old country roads, awwww great memories! Making the biggest "dusty rooster tails" was fun!
True duals with Glasspacks is a really sweet sound or a Flowmaster 40 series without catalysts. Those are my favorite setups.
Or glasspacks without convertors.
The exhaust with the Cherry Bomb sounds just about right.
Love the straight pipe sound
Glass pack had a more powerful smooth sound. In my opinion glass pack is it.
Unpopular opinion - I actually preferred the sharp, crisp sound of the straight pipe over the mumble off the glasspack. I feel it suits the application better on an old beat truck... On a clean daily or a family wagon the glasspack would probably sound less hick though.
Jacob O'Brien so do I!!! I have a glasspack and will be adding a straight pipe slavery soon!!!
Straight pipe is more aggressive and strong but I would prefer the glass pack for a daily driver
Guy knows how to make a useful video. You need to consult others on TH-cam that don't. Lol.
Also, using a high quality straight-thru muffler like Magnaflow, Corla, Corsa, etc, the packing type and quality is better and will never blow out, keeping that new sound virtually forever, or at least the life of the vehicle.
Probably the best video I’ve seen in the ways of comparison. Bravo
What sounded better? Glasspack or Straight Exhaust Tube?

I have the same truck, and mine is straight-piped. I prefer the straight pipe...
Straight pipe forsure thats what i have on my 5.4 should try putting a 5 or 6 inch tip it would sound real good
I like the straight pipes better. It's sexy makes a woman's pussy wet.
I liked the straight exhaust on most shots. So straight
That’s cute. My 5.7L is straight piped with 30in glasspacks in her. Sounds beautiful. I like the video man. It was nice to hear the comparison.
ok boomer
I loved the straight pipe! The glass pack was alright, but the straight pipe just sounded beefier!
Beefier as in beef stew?
For sure it did!
They sound annoying in real life I had an 03 4.8
Not healthy for the motor though
But sounds good

I prefer the glass pack myself.
I always loved how cherry bombs sounded. My dad had a pair on his 67 Chevy pickup
Muffler delete...I'm doing this on my 2013 GMC, Thanks bud, awesome video
I got a Straight pipe 5.2 V8 and it scares the shit outta Everyone and sounds so good.
I liked that straight pipe sound when it pop at the end
The in cab drone didnt sound that loud compared to the glass pack
I got true dual exhaust with cherry bombs and 5 inch stacks on my 93 Ford with the 7.3. love it
If you want to be loud and growly, then straight pipe exhaust tubing is for you.
@@JoeIsCrazyWillman indeed
amazed how quiet the straight-pipe sounds inside the cabin
Depends ones preference..i like the Glasspack cause inside was dampening enough that one can hear the morn news and keeps the sound of Glasspack outside of truck..cause after awhile of driving str8 pipes and headers gets kinda loud and there are times one just wants to cruise easy .
I would say on a newer truck I would do glass pack but the straight pipe definitely fits your truck.
Glasspack sounds great! Straight pipe will get you a HEFTY ticket.
Not everywhere
Yup, better Safe than Sorry.
I was considering the glass pack, though not anymore. Your video allowed me to determine I'm looking for something in between
I definitely like the even roar of the glasspack and remidms me of my classic 70`s muscle car i used to have ; the straight pipe sounds to me like you got a leak or a hole somewhere in the exhaust system ,too much rattle and high pitch pops !...good comparison video, thanks !
Straightpipe for sure thats how I ran my 78 Cutlass and thats how im runnin my 07 Silverado
I'm loving the cherry bomb. Bro.
Great video. My truck right now is straight piped, but I like the glass pack as well. The glass pack on my subs rumbled way more than the straight pipe.
Straight exhaust sounds amazing 😍
Amen. I have my dads ‘95 Chevy Cheyenne. It’s a dual exhaust straight pipe. It sounds awesome
I had 04 Tahoe 5.3 straight piped with 3" exhaust, loved the sound of straight pipes. I'm working on my dad's ole 94 Silverado now it was are father son project till he passed away so I'm working on finishing it up
I hope the '94 turns out nice.
Don't be that guy with a straight pipe, just sounds like an old ski boat. Glasspack!
... so you can sound like watery Chili Cheese farts passing by? No
@@twportre8809 I think you just described what a straight pipe sounds like when it's cruising on backroad
Its a chevy it always sounds like a wet chilli cheese fart under water lol 😆
I have my 4.8l straight piped with long tube headers now that’s a good sound 😆
How much did the setup cost for you?
ChevyDude I payed 375$ for the exhaust set up and 290$ for the long tube headers it’s worth it sounds amazing I’ll post a video if your interested?
@@brandonbarnwell7992 sure brother, post away. I would love to check it out
ChevyDude alright man video is up I will be posting a better video soon this one is just for now hope you enjoy the sound! It’s actually sounds like I have a cam on it lol
I have a 66 c10 with long tube headers straight pipe before the back wheels and a 5.7L v8 and I love the sound
I straight piped my Tacoma sophomore year, let’s just say I wish I had known about exhaust dump valves back then. My new setup is a straight side pipe for looks and sound and a quiet old man pipe tucked under the bed (for the neighbors) that I can switch remotely
I Love my Flowmaster Muffler
I had a super 44 on a dodge 5.2 with 5.5 echos under cab stupid loud I could drown out straits
Best video on this subject on TH-cam thanks.... I'm going straight pipe on my Corvette
What a weird way to start a video
I love the way the flowmaster sounds on my 2000 5.3, its loud enough to know it’s running but won’t make the neighborhood mad
Straight Pipe all the way!!! Big and Loud makes me proud!!!
I had a 2002 6.0 that I ran straight piped for about a year. That goofy thing made a tremendous amount of racket. Finally had a Flowmaster 50 dual out installed on it after that by a shop and it was so much more pleasant to spend long road trips in.
💀
I like the straight pipe. It seemed quieter inside the cab. I currently have the cherry bomb single to dual flat muffler. It's just way to loud in the cab. I just ordered a y pipe adapter. Thanks for the video
Agreed.
Cherry Bomb , growing up in the 70's . It was sweet sounding on hot rods. All my mufflers have been Cherry Bombs. Love that intimidating rumble at the traffic lights. If they can't see you , they can sure hear you coming..
I have a glass pack on my jeep. Amazing sound. I will never go back.
I have a cherry bomb glass pack on my 4.7L V8 Dakota, this video makes me want to replace that with a straightpipe!
I love my glass packs I think they sound amazing not to loud not to quiet they are just perfect with my cam they sound even better
The straight pipe sounded more quiet than the glass pack from the inside. I like the straight pipe.
I loved the straight pipes. I live out in the Nevada desert and I'm doing it . Can't wait.
the cherry bomb wins hands down. the straight pipe sounds like it running under water
James Hall I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about lmao, the straight pipe sounds waaaay better than a glass pack
Everybody has their own opinion guys, calm down 😂
@@ThenotMrNiceGuy0109 lmao
Thats because it doesn't have the backpressure it needs to run properly straight piped
Like the sound of the glasspack reving better. Not sure how to describe it. Has a more dignified sound to it. Less like a derby car.
The straight pipe sounds more visceral and raw. The glass pack sounds too tame to spend money on.
Test - my innocent comment keeps getting censored for no good reason, I was gonna tell you a really cool idea for exhaust pipes, but I guess I'm just a terrible person
Straight pipe sounds better thanks I was trying to decide between a cherry bomb or straight pipe
I prefer the sound of the strait pipe in place of the muffler over the glass pack. I think a lot of it depends on if you want the raw rumble and crackle sound or a little smoother lower growl. Both sound good in my opinion though.
I'm trying to figure out if I should straight pipe or glasspack. I want a deep rumble and not the louder option
@@frankthegerman4426 just straight pipe it bro I did.
@@frankthegerman4426 Sounds amazing and not too obnoxious. Definitely sounds smooth and rumbles
@@jordanfindley7538 cut the muffler so far and I already like it and do not regret it whatsoever. Will now cut the rest and straight pipe it all the way to the back instead of dumping at the side
@@frankthegerman4426 got duals on my 05 dodge ram 5.7 hemi with 4 inch tips and still have the cats, she sounds mean and people like it
The glass pack sounds better for sure, it's still loud but resonated. Less vibration sound and less popping on the decelerations.
I like the sound of the cherry bomb much more. It does sound like a well maintained powerful engine. While the straight pipe sounds like there is a hole in the exhaust somewhere
The straight pipe sounds like a NASCAR.
Well-maintained powerful engines don't have mufflers.
(not sure if anyone says that anymore but it's the dust from driving fast down a dirt road)
