  • Glasspacks Vs Flowmaster- Which one do you prefer #glasspacks #holleyIn this video I compare the difference in sound of my previous exhaust to my current set up. The car is a 1956 Belair with a 327 SBC and a 3 speed automatic transmission. The previous exhaust system was long tube headers with 2 1/4" pipe into generic Glasspack mufflers. They exited out the back with chrome pencil tips under the rear bumper. The current set up is Corvette style cast exhaust manifolds into 2 1/2" pipe. It has two Flowmaster 40 series Delta mufflers with no crossover pipe. The tail pipes are tucked up under the corner of the bumpers so that they are not seen. In the Glasspack clips it had a Carter 600 cfm carb and in the Flowmaster clips it has a Holley Sniper.
Below is the link to the Flowmaster 40 Delta mufflers.

For close to 20 years, i fabricated Lobak Mufflers, and they were custom made in different sizes for different applications. They were track mufflers on a lot of stock cars and for dirt track cars, and we even made them to as side pipes on cobra cars as well as inserts in boat headers. Flowmaster wouldnt test against them in the early years, and flowmaster had a problem of the ends breaking off. The patent ran out on them and now a few companies make copies.

Glass packs are great if they're installed right. Most don't install them correctly. I've always used a 30" glasspack/2- 1 for each cylinder bank. NO crossover & or H pipe before or after glasspacks. I've always put then in the middle of the car. Run 2&1/2" pipe back & over the rear axial & up around the sides of fuel tank & straight out to just past the rear bumper. Great sound & the fumes are out of the way. Plus, the sound goes out the back instead of in the car.

When it comes to tri 5 Chevy, I love the 1956 Chevy because everything is in the right place. Most people prefer that beautiful 1957 but if it's not black I don't want it. I grew up as a teen around a 56 Nomad with custom paint and to me that was the coolest car on the planet. I'm thinking silver base or white but the rest of it was psychedelic colors with metal flakes in the paint and it was show car or magazine condition and I always thought that wasn't nutn on the planet as cool as that car was. That's why I fell in love with the 1956 Chevrolet and the dude that had it totalled it and I had a hard time getting over it lol...I kept it shined up and he got run into a rock wall and it wasn't even his fault but I's mad over the car cause I seen wrecks and people fixed em but he was rollin and it wore the car out. I never seen it anymore cause I asked him if I could have it if I go get it from the wrecker service that towed it and he's right and so lucky to have made it out alive. Rock walls are hard on even the heavy metal vehicles lol...Finally 1 day me and my brother went to look at it and the engine trans and the whole car was a total mess and it ran dam good for a small block engine putting out maybe 567hp cause I remember he took it to Virginia and dynoed it cause it was strong heavy and fast lol

I put glasspacks on it shortly after I bought it (new in 2000), but switched to 40 series Flowmasters after about a year. My opinion as a guy who graduated high school in the early 90s....glass packs were considered the old fashioned "el-cheapo" budget muffler at that time.....flowmasters were the new and "high tech & state of the art" thing that the serious street race cars were running to get into the 10 to 12 sec et range....they sounded really exotic untill every 5.0 mustang on earth had them by the late 90s.
I still have a transverse 2.5" true dual exhaust flowmaster set up on my 75 455 trans am and love it..... although Im partial....to me a big bore long stroke RAIV cammed 455 pontiac will sound pretty mean with just about any muffler LOL! 😉👍

I like both. Changing to manifolds makes a big difference by itself, but it's still a good comparison. The glass pack and headers sounds more hot rod, the flow master and manifolds sounds more like a newer truck with a good exhaust on it. Hard to explain but newer vehicles (1998+) Chevy trucks just started to sound different. That's also because of the LS style heads. But I'll always say a SBC sounds better and I like your current setup! 👍

I HAVE USED BOTH ON MY 1961 SUNLINER. AT FIRST THE GLASSPACKS SOUND BETTER BUT AFTER AWHILE THE EXHAUST STARTS TO SOUND TINNY. THE FLOWMASTERS DO NOT SOUND AS GOOD AT FIRST BUT MONTHS LATER STILL SOUND THE SAME. POWER OUTPUT WAS NOT MUCH DIFFERANT BETWEEN THE 2

Its a great old school CHEV. The glass packs were the best, my opinion.

It may be because I'm a Boomer that I now prefer the toned down Flowmasters over the raspier sounding glasspacks.

Personal experience is that Flowmasters always sounded better with longtube headers, optional h-pipe

I like to take my 69 c 10 on road trips. At end of day I still like throaty sound…and no headache. Conversations are also easier to have. Just sayn.

On Chevy glass pack. On Ford flow master. Just my opinion.
Love the way the garage door opens. 😂

    Great 56 !
    Great comparison.
    I wonder if it’s a generational thing ? I’m 55 Y/O.
I usually HATE the sound of Flow Masters. I took mine off my 70 Chevy truck 5 minutes after I got that truck home & put glass packs on it.
Yours are the best sounding flow masters I ever heard, but I still strongly prefer the packs.

Thank you. I did not install an x or H pipe and I think that is why they still sound raspy at the high RPM's :)

Depends on the build for me I prefer flowmasters tho especially on a hot rod or something but something to cruise in glass packs aren’t bad

Glasspacks ftw….i got 3” dual glasspacks about 16” after the collectors on my long tube headers and the exhaust exits right past the door openings on my nova before the rear tires…..its gotta LSA supercharged 370” lq9 in it, youd never know it was supercharged cause the exhaust is so loud you cannot hear the blower…..my c/10 on the other hand has 2.5” summit flowmaster knock offs and basically routed the same as my nova but instead it has a vortech centrifugal supercharged 5.3 in it and its definitely noticable ….the blower is way louder than the motor!!!…..im gonna put the dual 3” glasspacks on it soon too!!!

Fantastic video and fantastic car. BOTH sounded great on the car but I am leaning towards the glasspacks myself. Just a more classic old school sound to me. I'm putting a 350 4 bbl in my 57 this summer and I was looking for what kind of exhaust. I am also going with Ram's horns exhaust. Too many problems with headers over the years. So I say a big thanks for having this video. It helped me a lot. Love the car.

Sounds better with the glass packs for sure. I have always liked a muffler like the dyno max ultra flows. They are straight through like a cherry bomb style glass pack but much larger which cuts out some of the high frequencies and rasp for a deeper tone. I always thought glass packs were too raspy and flowmasters always sound hollow and cheap for some reason.

Thanks for your time and for sharing..u about made me spill my coffee when you pulled out with tender hooked up..as if I've never done THAT. I'd be curious about the difference between the HEADERS and the MANIFOLD alone. That has to be a factor in the two setups.

    • @BigRed_1980
      @BigRed_1980  ปีที่แล้ว

I know that the headers flow more and most likely make the glasspacks a bit louder. It’s hard to say though as I cannot feel any performance difference between the two setups so it would lead me to believe the difference is minimal.

@@BigRed_1980 I believe in the "seat of the pants" is always better on a street car than anything else. I'm all about the FI but I love the old-school look. I liked your SUN gauge you had and I think your "field car" look good with chrome reverse wheels LOL. I'm changing up the exhaust on my car and I've been looking at some Flowmaster mufflers. And I like the MF #10416 mufflers. Your video has me curious about the 40 series Delta.

I tried to get a Flowmaster muffler for my RX4 years ago, and no one would se me one. Apparently they melt when matched to the Wankel.
