Your explanation as to why sketches can usually look better was mind blowing! Never once did i think of it in that way! I think that probably explains why im always more interested in artists sketches alot more than there finished pieces. Im admittedly alot more egotistical than an average person so i guess i like my own brains interpretation laid on top of other people's works than i like there own completed vision that has no room for individual interpretation. Seriously! Thank you alot for such an insightful explanation! This episode was like a jimmy neutron brain blast.
Another problem in recognizing popular face is that we know him through the years and different ages.. so my mind see all versions of his face at once! Impossible to paint that :P
I'm going to oil paint Bill Murray toasted on a piece of sliced bread right now. Closeup at angle and at eye level, off center with distant kitchen counter in background. Brilliant, thank you!
Awesome painting of an awesome subject!--loved Bill Murray in Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, Life Aquatic and Fantastic Mr. Fox, some of my fav movies with one of my top fav actors.
Excellent stuff. I just showed my youngest two the Ghostbuster movies and they knew who you'd painted. Your painting approach also does a great job of showing just how much of a likeness is contained in the eyes, nose and mouth area... once you had those in place the likeness just started popping out.
Thank you for the honest video. Its hard to realize there is a struggle in the painting process when one is already so established as a painter, but you show us artists we need to push through the process and come out on the other side regardless. I was also intrigued that you are painting from pop culture. You mentioned it is a break from gallery work, but could one still use paintings like these (like of our favorite movie characters or from fandom) as a part of our portfolio? Or even shown it in an exhibition? I am trying myself to build a larger portfolio but it is hard sometimes to come with what I should paint next. I'd love to hear your tips on that. Thanks!
For me personally I don’t view this as part of my main body of work. But not because it’s pop culture related... It’s just not something that I explore intellectually and artistically in the same way as I do my other work.
I loved this video. I can't belive that a portrait painter like you would do a painting like this, with a reference image from one of the best scenes from the ghostbusters movie. That was really original
My three greatest loves: art, food, and Bull Murray 😄 Thank you for explaining why I can paint a stranger but struggle with someone I know- because of heightened expectations. Love it, as always.
Your knowledge on painting likeness is a godsend, my friend. I've been wondering why I can do a good likeness if it's just something I toss off in a sketch but why I struggle with painting a likeness on canvas and you brought the light. Likeness is a mystery to me. I feel like ultimately getting someone's essence accurately on a canvas is like somehow painting the invisible.
Would love to see a comparison with a character image that's ideal for painting (great lighting, high definition frame) ♡ to show how you defeat the struggles from this reference
Interesting explanation for why a sketch that originally feels spot on to the likeness when more rendered falls further away. Hadn't thought about it from that angle of the mind filling in the details when it is vague.
I remember Ghost busters well. The genius marketing campaign in London which started with posters everywhere saying, 'They're coming' all over the underground buses etc. A little known fact, the building they run from in the beginning, about 10 years ago one of my photos made it into an exhibition there. Great video as usual.
i love this painting, you might have struggled with it but you made him so beautiful and captured his endearing essence. i love watching your videos and you motivate me to paint.
I already loved the channel but as an 80s kid who makes movies, the fact that you love Ghostbusters, Bill Murray, and other 80s movies and nostalgia proved I was in the right place LOL
It's so challenging to work on a painting that's not going as planned, but I think it turned out great! Christopher Walken is my favorite actor from the 80s and 90s and I drew a portrait of him years ago for my home. It was kitsch but I loved it. Thanks for including my favorite quote from the movie! Gunga Galunga!
Can you make a video about the different types and shapes of brushes you use while painting a portrait? I’m a complete beginner and trying to figure out what brushes i should get for a start, and what brushes are good for what. Thanks for sharing your wonderful tips and painting process! They are so therapeutic to watch.
Well, just because you can’t see the love handles doesn’t mean they’re not there 😅. But I struggle with this all the time myself... so much to do but so little time.
Thank you for the Trekell link, but please reveal a little more about your brushes, such as natural or synthetic, which line of rounds, or whatever you are willing to share. Beautiful work, as usual. Thanks.
This video came at such a good time. I'm so frustrated with a study that I'm trying to paint of my cousin. I'm running into the same issues. My reference image isn't that good and I'm clashing with trying to paint what I know vs what I see. I'm going to try to think of it more as a caricature and paint the aspects of her face that make her look like herself. I've been trying to keep it vague but I notice myself still getting irritated that her face shape isn't turning out correct or that her head isn't tilted the same as in the photo. Her nose and her mouth are also difficult for me to paint. I've never had so much trouble and frustration painting a face but I also don't want to give up on this study because I've tried painting her 2 other times with different reference pictures and I gave up on both of them. 😤😑
This is dope as hell! The original Ghostbusters is one of my all-time favorite movies. Bill Murray rocks! (Though Egon was my favorite Ghostbuster. 😉) I love your style and you're super inspiring. Amazing painting and video! Definitely will be subscribing.
I know this is an old video, but after watching this and hearing about your struggles it got me thinking as to why you didn't use multitudes of references? Surely there's a picture of Bill Murray on Google looking towards the camera in better quality, that you could have used to help yourself get the textures and lighting as you wanted? Just a quick thought from a fan :)
How you know what colour will suits better in specific spot ? For example, doing eye-bags, you put kind of orange/pink mix and why not some grey red mix - or lower cheek, goes from yellow/orange to red/brown... why not some other colors (obviously in skin colors range) . To specify my question... is your color matching a "game of guessing" ?
As a Pennsylvania resident and native, I have to say we can't stand groundhog's day which makes it hard to enjoy the movie - in a very light hearted way. Gobblers Knob and the little town of Punxsutawney is nearly my backyard so I prefer Bill Murray in Ghost Busters and Zombieland (pretty sure the younger viewers know that one!). I enjoyed the video and you have broken down and stricted rules that I was told I had to follow to be an artist. Thank you.
I guess if I was to dare speak to your frustration, since I have not the skill level you possess AT all, either your signature is not the juxtaposing of details and generality or realism and imagery but the beautiful eyes. I see a more tired/frustrated look in the photo of his eyes (which also makes him look so much older) than in your interpretation of his beautiful eyes. How anyone can capture EMOTION with paint at all is so far beyond my comprehension I should just shut my mouth! btw, thank you SO much for your work, I have been inspired to paint! And I was an art major in college and hate painting the most of all the mediums.

@@AlpayEfe If I could get flesh tones to look as good as they do in this painting, I would be happy. I'm struggling for such a long time to paint a picture of Jessica Jones. It would be cool if you did an oil painting of her.
Things don't always work out. As with many things in life. Even after 10,000+ hours into my painting career I will occasionally come up against a pose, lighting situation, or subject matter in general that just does not want to cooperate on the canvas. Just because the last ten paintings were successful doesn't mean the eleventh will be. That's an important thing to learn, early on especially.
One thing that I suspect would be hard to capture in paint is that Bill has really rough skin with pot holes in and around the cheek area. I really dig this artist what I like is that he seems to capture the frustration of painting unlike some of the happier youtubers who present painting like it's all eating cake and unicorn farts. It's also worrying because I am 2 years into art night classes and just starting to get okay and I kind of hoped for a time when I didn't find the whole process really fun but super frustrating.
How do you deal with copyright when doing stuff from movie stills ? Btw ... i thought I spoted a trekell.... niiiiiice Sometimes a sketch looks more like the person her/himself ¡¿¡¿
Didn't look below, and I know it's annoying to hear someone say 'here's what's missing' or such like, but the two things that jump out at me is I first think of Bill Murry's face as pockmarked... and also, you have his upper lip (area between nose and actual lip) too long. IDK if that's the true fix for getting a better Bill Murry experience from this, but yeah... something to consider.
Painting is literally impossible for me, I can’t mix colors right or just brush over the canvas and it’s a masterpiece like some artist I don’t get it.
Thumbs up if you wanna see Bill Murray’s face on a piece of toast...

you mention that your favourite brush are from Trekell but the link only goes to the generic brush page. is there specific ones that you like and use?

Yeah, sometimes I actually do. If you look at my video of „Valkyrie“ you can see it
it looks like bill is actually sitting behind the canvas and you simply erase it with the brush
