I got tired of color picking on my digital art (even quit oil painting because color mixing was very difficult, always comes out gray and muddy) and thought that I should learn color theory, and I found your channel. I have spent hours and hours watching and re-watching your tutorials, and I can say that my colors and values have improved A LOT. Thank you, Sir!
I really love your method! I'm in the process of gearing up for oils but in the meantime, I'm doing gouache and I can apply the same theory to it. Color matching the value first, and then the hue, using your colour chart, covering the canvas slowly and surely. Wow! How well that works! I'm a professional VFX artist so my eye is well trained in subtle colour variances but I am still learning how to match colours while mixing paint efficiently. I've traced over my reference material in photoshop, transferred it on my paper canvas over a light table so proportions are solid. Using my reference material on a 1 to 1 scale on my laptop while I paint. Excited to start in oils soon!
I’m a new artist in the process of learning and experimenting and your videos are an excellent source of knowledge and experience... Thank you for sharing this information!
I remember learning this concept in art school and thinking about how it's a good analogy for life. Therefore, you must care for the object and its surroundings. I think I got this technique down after reading Ian Robert's. I try to color match regions after laying down a super thin sketch, and then follow up by modifying colors and setting in some artistic contrast so it doesn't look too much like the reference.
Good discussion of the problems inherent in our ability to see, or rather to understand HOW we see, that is to say, how our brains interpret visual information. Another problem involves photography, although this has improved with the rise of HDR (or made everything even worse!). The point is: the camera lens (even the best of them) and the digital sensor (again, even the best) doesn't see values well. In fact the camera tends to exaggerate overall contrast. For example, in the above video, the light coming through the windows is nearly white and the area between them nearly black, but if we were in the room in the same position as the camera, we could see all kinds of values and colors outside on the neighboring wall and what's really going on behind the instructor. Even the values in his face are exaggerated by the camera, the shadow side being made darker and the lighter a bit lighter than we would see it. One can verify this phenomenon very simply--compare your smartphone screen to the subject when taking a picture. So, for painting, those who are using photographs for reference might want to keep this in mind. Old timers knew these weaknesses of photography. Dodging and burning was normal darkroom practice--knock down the highlights and bring up the shadows. Anselm Adams did this. This isn't to say that photography deceives. It tells a lot of truth. The reality is that our eyes aren't just lenses, they're very, very sophisticated ones. Our eyes are capable of doing what no man made lens can--perceive INTENSITY of light ALONG WITH color. So, for example, we see a highway at night, cars with red, yellow and white lights everywhere. The white headlights are the brightest, right? Not necessarily. A reddish brake light up close is giving us more light than a faraway headlight. It is more intense, despite the "fact" that red is darker than white in value. A painter might claim--you're not really seeing "white" light, but some tone of gray. This is only true in PAINTING, where white is the highest key "color," that is the lightest possible value capable of representing light. Herein lies a truth: pigments in oil aren't reality, they're stand-ins. They have to represent all that our eyes are capable of seeing. If you can help out his neighbor in Austin with the sponsorship of the Young Ukrainian family please do. My friend is also sponsoring a gal and child (same scenario) and the United States Gov. requires the following, or they can’t come over, and that’s a tall requirement . Quote: “I had to guarantee 100% of all costs for two years. That’s travel to the US. While here I must provide food shelter medical care (100% coverage), education like college or trade school and housing. 100% of their needs. “
Anyone who has enough space to home a family escaping war should seriously consider helping people out. It would be gratefully appreciated and a great service to a people fighting the brave fight for freedom
The colors on the vase are not the same colors on the video, because apparently the camera compensates. I went to my HD screen and boxed my hands around each dot on the vase, and the dot on the whitest part of the vase is certainly not the same color as the other dots when I isolate the dot. It's the camera, because I'm sure your principle or theory is correct. It's not technically correct on the video, so that's confusing.
Boxing your hands is clearly the wrong technique for you. I grabbed screenshots (at 1080p) and took them into a painting program. Using the light dot, because you think that's a problem area, I zoomed in to the point of pixilation and then manually checked the RGB of side-by-side. I can confirm the colours are identical. I mean PRECISELY, MATHEMATICALLY identical. I know YT compression can screw things up, but not in this case. Not in 1080p that's for certain. I didn't check other resolutions.
@@darthkek1953 Great input. Thanks. When one looks at the video as an example of the same color, that is misleading, but I understand your point that in fact it is the same on the canvas. Showing actual contrast on the video is just confusing. Thanks again!!
Anyone who can provide a temporary home for Ukrainians families escaping war is doing tremendous service to freedom and the right to live a decent life on the principles we all hold dear in the west. Thankyou to all of them
I'm on the other side of that, I know the difficulty that people are having in Ukraine and the refugees and I know where to donate if I'm going to, but I clicked on to hear some teaching on painting in oils. Not about anything else, I'm out!
Here we go again with Ukraine. If you cared about Ukraine where were you when the citizens have been crying help for the sex trafficking they been suffering for years?? Give me a break! Unsubscribed
Hi, I'm from Ukraine and what we have nowadays is biggest shit we're fasing as a nation in at least 50 years, so what you're talking about? Is it bad to try to help people who became a refugee? You just picking one problem and trying to tell that instead of caring about INNORMOUS problem a person should care about other stuff which has happened in the past? What's wrong with you?
I donated to the Ukraine refugees at his neighbors because all I need to know is they’ve fled a war and are in need. Why are you casting shade on Mark’s attempt to help?
I highly respect Mark and I chalk it up to him being compassionate for his neighbor/friend, as I highly doubt he has any real understanding of the situation outside of what he’s been told by his neighbor and what he’s imbibed via the mainstream media. Most Americans have ZERO understanding of this war and what led to it, let alone any other aspect of that part of the world, so I am doing my best to be patient with those around me. I will say though that my patience is wearing thin, and seeing the same people who for years have selectively weaponized “ethnic/racial hatred” as the pinnacle of all evil, engage in the demonization of an entire ethnic culture/country(Russia)and it’s people….let’s just say that these individuals have greatly affirmed my assumptions about their personal moral character as well as the hollowness of their Neoliberal zealotry. Russophobia is deeply ingrained in this country in an almost genetic capacity. The post-wwii lens by which the greater west has defined it’s identity was carved from the block of several great caricatures, but primarily from one of juxtaposition to the USSR. The war in Ukraine is directly related to this “great powers” conflict however I’m still discouraged by the speed with which so many normally decent western people jumped on the vilification of Russia with a rabid willfulness to totally overlook the egregious actions of not only the government of Ukraine, but also the scumbags in Washington who also have blood dripping from their hands. Most people however can’t be bothered to take a long hard self-reflective look at not only our own country’s complicity in this war, but also at their own selective moral outrage. Denying what has been happening since 2014 and then wailing hysterically about “Russian aggression” is a tell tale sign you have no real comprehension of the actual situation. Hopefully, as this operation wraps up, the objective reality will eek out from under the paper-thin rug from whence our utterly degenerate media/regime has tried to sweep it under, and the people in the west who are not irretrievably possessed ideologues will come to see that the reality in Ukraine is far more complicated than they’ve been led to believe. Integrity and reason seem to be in short supply these days, and even though I tend to be extremely Spenglerian about the dying west, I still try to have faith in the goodness of most people. Mark’s willingness to make a plea to help this young family should be a testament to that.
@@shayneswenson Why are you so convinced that Russian side of this story is trustworthy? Basically, you just pick a side based on your personal sympathies and antipathies. If you're not involved in any way, if you didn't communicate with actual Ukrainians, for example, then how can you know if there's any real russophobia that might've lead to the things that allegedly had been happening in the eastern Ukraine since 2014? If you can understand Russian, you can look for the videos with interviews in Donbass that were made in the last 8 years. The streets aren't ruined, people aren't hiding somewhere, they're just living their lives. Look at Mariupol then and now, after Russian invasion (you can also look for the diaries of Mariupol people that managed to survive). Mind you, the battles were going on only in the small area near the Russian border, and the most active phase was in 2014. For the last couple of years, it was almost quiet there, there were less than 10 deaths in total last year or in the preceding one. By the way, many people from there fled deeper into Ukraine instead of leaving the country. Why would they, if they were allegedly persecuted here? And the rest of eastern Ukraine has been doing fine until February 24. As did the southern part (those two are the most Russian-speaking and some southern cities have been occupied by Russia this spring). And all the other cities here... I live in Kyiv and I mostly speak Russian, and I've never got into trouble because of that. My father is from Russia, and the worst thing that ever happened to him is having to use Ukrainian when giving lectures in the university: it was a bit inconvenient to adapt when he just started. My acquaintances moved from Russia to Ukraine after 2014 and were never treated with hostility or something. Even after 2014 you can still hear Russian on TV and radio, buy books in Russian, watch a play in Russian in the theatre, learn Russian language and literature in some schools and universities, be served in Russian if you ask. There were blatantly pro-Russian parties in the parliament even a month into the literal war with Russia. Even the far-right nationalistic parties weren't represented there; almost no one votes for them. Zelensky has always been far from being a nationalist, having pretty moderate liberal-leaning views; Russian-speaking till the presidency. Even the Azov battalion initially was formed in Mariupol/Berdyansk, and many of its members speak Russian and might have Russian roots. It makes zero sense for them to discriminate against people that are just like them, basically their friends, family, or their neighbors... they all live in the localities that's been turned into rubble. I don't why your sympathies lie with Russia -- maybe because you're actually from there or you have Russian roots, or you just simply support those who oppose the collective West that you despise... but how can you ignore the obvious, like the aggressive foreign policy of USSR and even modern Russia, or the history of its relationships with the neighboring countries? It's more about Russia vs former USSR colonies than Russia vs West. Look into the preceding wars where Russia was involved. There's lots of similarities. Russia is still a pretty machiavellian state. And you can still admire its culture, art, literature, certain personalities, and so on but why necessarrily support the actions of the government?
@@muhlenstedt whole your message is a simple manipulation in style "what about you...". And still this is not an answer from Mark why exactly he choose to promote this family and not refugees from any other country.
@@megacloudhead For you is manipulation for me it is just a principle: before accusing or pointing the fingers to others, one should ask himself/herself if has the moral authority to do it . It is too easy to question or criticize, and it is just false when people judge without acting as better examples. To help people Mark does not need justifications. Beside this, you do not know if and what he did in the past for another refugee grupe. The Ucranie crisis is acute know, it is naturally that this stays in focus.

Mark I wanted to ask I have brushes and I can't seem to remove paint got any strong ideas? Oil paint!
If you use acetone that should help get the dried up oil paint out of the brushes.
@@RobertF- Thanx Robert!
Acetone won’t help much
The only product that really works is
Brush cleaner (methylene chloride)
And let them rest for a day
Only use it outdoors or in a well ventilated area

thank you!
My biggest challenge!
Trust the process
good luck to all emmigrants from ukraine
The windows behind you look like paintings!
Those windows make your scene look painted.
Never seen one of those little mics being mounted on glasses rather than your shirt lol
This isn't an airport you don't need to announce your departure.
The war in Ukraine is still a thing? Apparently this is where I get my news these days
Already billions of tax payers money going there, while there is poverty and high inflation in USA.
All paintings are difficult, incuding watercolor :://
Here we go again with Ukraine. If you cared about Ukraine where were you when the citizens have been crying help for the sex trafficking they been suffering for years?? Give me a break!

Buh-bye.
goodbye, you won't be missed
That was such a Christian comment
Come on, Mark. You know _nothing_ about the war in Ukraine. Stick to art, something you do know.

Why you didnt promote a single refugee from Iraq, Syria, Libya, Ethiopia, Afganistan? They dont deserve the same?
Wrong skin colour, another religion, some westerners don’t consider us as civilized people.
@@muhlenstedt Do you mean refugees from Ukrain is a "trendy thing" and other refugees doesn't suffer anymore? You see - this kind of manipulations works both way... I am just trying to say there is much more than Ukrainian refugees, and if Mark is so responsive, we will see other in next videos, right?
@@megacloudhead No, I do not mean that, I am just commenting that the press gives focuses to the latest crisis . I do not have any knowledge about Marks mind and soul, I can not say what moves him now and in the future.
Please, could you mention your support of censorship on your next video? It's fun getting to know you....
