They are actually talking about Mike Mangini, and then you have fragments of El estepario playing to DT's music to make it seem as if they were talking about him. from the comments below I'm not sure everyone got that.
Nope. Cause DT doesn't play with triggers and they would realise he's not half as good as he seems. Which btw is exactly what we can see in this video. Have you noticed that he sounds sloppy af compared to his videos? It's because he knew/was told that he couldn't edit the audio or use triggers.

After that I lost the little respect I had for him - he's obviously an accomplished drummer, but nobody would have even noticed him if he didn't doctor his videos to death. El Esterpario would not have got the job because he’s too much for them. They couldn’t cope with how awesome he is. They’d all be overshadowed. El, is too good that I’m afraid he has limited his options. The only place I could see him playing is Asgard. 🤣
I don't want to blame El Estepario Siberiano which i really really appreciate, especially since his took his drumming style more professionnally and seriously, but i don't think you realize how a person like Mike Mangini has an infinite range of tools and skills that make him probably one of the most versatile and technic drummer in the world. I can totally understand the critics about his playing style, which i kind of agree, but at this time they had to replace a legendary and iconic drummer, and choose the guy that was both able to replicate at the perfection the play style, the sound of Portnoy, and have a true musician brain that has all the knowledge to adapt and create such complexe compositions. At the end, even if the level that El Estepario Siberiano achieved during the time which is completely insane, i think he is still a self taught drummer that probably lacks a lot of knowledge when it comes to music theory and creating from scratch with super high level musicians as John Petrucci or Jordan Rudess. I mean, playing a jam with this guys is really not the same thing as making a perfect cover of popular songs. Improvising with such musicians is not something everybody can do and i am not sure that El Estepario Siberiano would be at the level of Mangini in this kind of exercices. + to be honest, there are probably more hidden stories and relationships between musicians that led them to choose Mangini, and the fact that they basically all came from Berkley is something to consider in my mind. They know those environnement and the industry behind it more than very well.
I don't think so. Mangini can write out all the time signatures as well as playing them. You can't get much more technical than Mangini. He just isn't quite as creative as Portnoy. Both are hard to beat.
Gotta call fake on this one. The comments by the band were the exact comments they made on Mike Mangini. Not that El Estpario isn't great because he is. But whomever made this one cheated you all. Not real. And not that he wouldn't do a great job, but Portnoy is just as creative and musical. I think El Estipario is a bit quicker and a bit tighter.
