***** It's possible yes, I think it would only be a high Yoyo combined with a quick stall and the following hammerhead. However, the pilot would lose too much speed to have any chance of catching the German. And that that Luftwaffe pilot would surely not keep flying straight, making himself a perfect target. This maneuver can only be used defensively, I would say. And don't worry about your English, it's perfectly fine. I'm not a native speaker myself, but I can understand you :)
BoarhideGaming Actually, that maneuver is real. You're thinking then why didn't all pilots use this trick? Because there's a 80% chance of failing this maneuver.
Ryan | Spazzybacca it's also completely useless in combat because it won't be anything like in this movie. And where did you get that 80% from? Is that a recorded stat or did you just make this up the same way the film makers invented a new physics.
The P40's wing-loading is 37.5 lb/ft^2, 90% of the P51's 39. The Bf 109 G-6 (the one in this clip, and one of the most common) had a wingloading of 40 ft/lb^2, which was virtually the same. But the Messerschmidt was only 75% the weight of the Mustang, implying it would be able to withstand it better. A 190 couldn't, with a wingloading of 49 ft/lb. And the swept-wing design of the Flankers and Hornets would actually, in all likelihood, snap the wings if they did this at their typical speeds.
@@VF000O Yeah, this isn't a cobra though, he basically did a backflip. The Flanker could definitely perform a similar maneuver but not this tight. Still, it's a lot more plausible than a fucking P-51 doing it.
lol let me point out the problems here -the MG151 on the 109 would have shredded the P-51 if it scored that many hits -the P-51 cant perform anything close to a kulbit like in the video, even less in battle -the P-51's 50cals can usually not destroy a BF109 that fast, took quite a few hits, not just a short pass
RX-78 -2 well yeah but it's impossible for it to perform such a maneuver anyway, its just really fucked up lol even non aviation fans can see the lack of realism here
Pickleman Not a fighter, you have to spray it with M2s to kill a large target like a plane. They only kill human sized targets. This one shotkill crap is just pure american fantasy. The only areal weapon that could do that in WW2 was the german MK-108.
Pickleman it is you who is incorrect. Of course you can get a lucky hit, but it took in general a good burst to cause any kind of significant damage, not a little strafe to cause an instakill. The 50cal was becoming ineffective for air combat from 1943 onward with the newer faster, tougher and better armed fighters but the Americans still used them until the Korean war when the pilots finally begged for them to be removed. The only reason they didn't get rid of them earlier was because they didn't have any decent cannons in production to replace them with. The only cannon they had was the AN/M2 which is a cheap low quality copy of the British Hispano HS.404 until the M61 came, which they are still using to this day.
the P51 DOES actually have a siren whistle sound though when it flies overhead... Because of the bottom air intake... the others DO NOT sound like sirens...
lets not even begin on the part where one of the US pilots tanks over 6 30mm explosive cannon shells in a head on with a jet... its what I call "Black magic"
@@tic-tac9323 Given that the loads for .50cal belts included incendiary rounds, and that the pilot in question shot the torpedo launchers causing them to ignite and explode... It was a very real tactic in WW2 that US pilots would do against enemy ships. If they lacked any dedicated ordinance, they'd strafe the torpedoes hoping to get that lucky hit. One set of pilots did this in a dive against a Japanese Cruiser by firing down into the stacks which caused one of the boilers to explode and that crippled the ship. So, yeah, it's very possible to put a ship out of action using only HMGs, you just have to hit the right spot with the right bullet.
@@Tank50us - Nope... The only credited incident in which planes used machine guns to destroy a Navy Vessel was 4 P47's that strafed an Italian Ariete class destroyer that was being under the control of the DKM. The Vessel was not at combat stations and had no securities in place. It is believed that machine-gun fire made its way into a powder magazine due to the vessel not having hatches secured. There are no credited incidents of Japanese ships being cripple by machine gunfire. Also, help me understand something... I want to see if you understand the comedy of your claim... A pilot, diving at a Japanese cruiser was able to visually identify that the round from his flight traversed the funnel and destroyed a boiler... Diving at a cruiser... Being fired at the whole time. Flax and 20mm bursts all around them, while approaching at over 200kts... Having to pull out of the dive at 500ft MINIMUM or risk crashing... You're telling me that a pilot was able to visually confirm a boiler being destroyed, through a smoke funnel at 500ft with explosions all around him, whilst trying his best to pull out of a dive without crashing? Please... Provide sources haha XD
That spin maneuver was not shown correctly in the movie, but it can be done. Recently Guy Martin (motorcycle rider) was riding with a stunt pilot and they did that very maneuver, but plane literally flips forward and is pointed backwards. Did the Red Tails actually use this extraordinary maneuver? That's for each of us to believe or not.
oh.. and P-51 never flew cover INSIDE of the bomber formation. That is about the dumbest thing anyone can think of.. It should've been the Fw190s attacking the bomber formation while Bf109s provided cover and fought the P51s. This movie is just BS
Whatsup1492 you can just piss off, you don’t have to call out the realism in the movie, it’s a movie, not a documentary, so you don’t have to say jack shit
Daniel457 that doesn’t mean there has to be realism in the fighter and bomber formations, based on true events means the story, not the realism of the actions and scenes
Not only would his airframe been terribly damaged in that flip, but G-forces would have caused him to go unconsciousness to the point where he would wake up in an irrecoverable dive LOL
@@17MrLeon Yeah very realistic. A sudden bleed of speed within seconds only modern day fighters would be able to pull off. Maybye it was real but the pilot pulled WAY higher and dived
Ok, again this maneouver happened and it was pulled of in P51D. Why do you keep bringing matter that has been already put to the side. It did not have to be modern airplane. BECAUSE IT FUCKING HAPPENED EXACTLY LIKE THIS.
@@17MrLeon no way that shit is real. The plane would have either pulled upward in an arc or broken apart. No aircraft was ever made to do that. The pilot would instantly black out from massive G force. This was George Lucas crap at it's most stupid.
"Dark Blue World" made in 2001 - It is based on the events surrounding the Polish pilots that flew Spitfires for the RAF after Poland was invaded. Pretty good movie too. Some minor liberties, but overall quite accurate and the flying combat is a close to real as you can get. They even include actual gun camera footage.
judging by how tight the turn was, in reality the plane would have: A) Stalled, never finished the turn, or B) had its wings ripped off by G forces C) Pilot would have blacked out. D) All of the above. I think it was meant to look like a high yo-yo, but such a tight turn would require thrust vectoring like on the F-22, as the wings and tail would stall from the high angle of attack.
He was going pretty fast, wouldn't have instantly stalled. It would be B and C. It looked like he did basically a loop but just super compressed. In real life he would have gone out way wider and likely stalled at the apex of the climb.
"wir müssen das auf hart machen, biegt ein" which means "we gotta do it the hard way, turn" should have said "wir müssen das auf die harte art/tour machen, formation brechen" or something which means "we need to do it the hard way, break formation" late reply, but its a reply lmao
If anybodys ever seen the show dogfights that maneuver is possible and was used in combat. Pilots put on air brakes and chop throttle pulling up steeply into a stall. Then kick the rudder out so they do a flat spin while stationary, hopefully landing some hits on the enemy before falling into a nosedive, they then gain speed as they fall and throttle up. I know it looks like a backflip in the movie but really its not its a steep yaw.
I am so tired of these video game-like world war two movies. Can Hollywood please just make a decent film that's historically accurate? Maybe even focus on the other side of the war, instead of the continual 'Murica garbage?
Yes, I think there should be more movies that show WWII from the Axis side. Most of the newer WWII movies are American produced that show americans during WWII killing all the nazis and stuff, has crappy CGI and has a happy ending. But hey, there might be some movies out there we haven't heard of.

The Chaika's a biplane. Biplanes can pull similar shenanigans to this, but you're not going to do it in a monoplane unless maybe it's one of those Red Bull air racers.
Great movie ,but highly inaccurate if he did that going at the same speed in the real world he would of ripped his wings or the very least stalled and gone into a flat spin.
For anyone who is actually pointing out the "illogical" mistakes in the movie are just as stupid as the people who believe them. Clearly the movie was not meant to be "Historically accurate"
Semptar suchus No, it isnt. We can assume that they were flying at an altitude where the P51 would have performed at it's best. Say, over 6kms. Since it performed well at this altitude, we can also assume that both it and the Bf 109 were going over 500km/h. Doing that "flick" would have likely made the pilot black out, or even tear the wings off the plane due to the G forces. Not possible.
That's not the hammerhead turn. A hammerhead turn is like a cross is intermediate between a World War I style Immellman, and the Cobra Turn. In the hammerhead you pull up and yaw to the side you want to head up too and let the stall reverse your plane. This is the stall turn, the way it is preformed is you lower the throttle, hit the breaks, lower the flaps, then you pull back on the stick, then do hard left/right rudder, all within a short time frame to snap the P-51/Bf 109 in a banking loop...

Connor Branscombe Lucas has not made a good movie since the fucking 80`s, and back then his ex wife saved indiana Jones and Star Wars by rewriting lines, and taking charge of the editing, if you want to know what a movie totaly controlled by lucas looks like, just look at the prequels, this has been know for years, Lucas is a good idea man, just a shit writer and director, this is hardly a contriversial statement, im guessing by your comment that you think this is a good movie?
+Orin00r How is asking for a good movie destroying cinema? Instead, it's helping cinema get better. It's idiots like you who have infested all kinds of areas including gaming, and what you specialize in is taking shit like on disc DLC, Microtransactions and all that corporate shit but you just smile and wave, and thank them for taking your money too. Same applies to cinema. If you don't demand good movies be made, the cinema is gonna get worse and worse. +cybermat47 is right. A movie about planes which takes into account the laws of physics and maybe tries a little harder to make the enemies a bit more than just stupid unskilled idiots who were given planes to control right after they finished cooking school would be great.
All these people who think this is some sort of propaganda are idiots. This was made by George Lucas, who had a bit of a boner for dogfight scenes. During the creation of the Death Star battle in the original Star Wars movie, George took a bunch of different scenes from WW2 fighter pilot movies and archival footage of WW2, and spliced them together as their storyboard. So with how much of WW2 buff George Lucas is, you`d imagine he`d probably want to do a movie based on WW2, right? And he likes to make movies where the underdogs fight a huge empire, (Rebels vs Empire, Indiana Jones vs Nazis) right? And who were a group of underdogs in WW2? Black fighter pilots during WW2. So maybe, it wasn`t propaganda. Maybe he just wanted to do another movie.
Its biased because they are the protagonists. Your mistake was expecting a Lucas film to be realistic. Remember how Indiana Jones has the Nazis looking for the Ark of the Covenant, or the Holy Grail?
I know the Germans were trying to defend their country, I`m not saying they were evil at any point. My point is that George Lucas is the type of guy who won`t let facts get in the way of a good story. For instance, the Red Tails never flew P-51Ds, they flew P-51Cs. Plus, you never see them fly P-47s, they just transition straight to the Mustangs. This has nothing to do with bias, this is just plot armor, and protagonist-centered morality. Directors stretch the facts in historical movies all the time. In the movie Jarhead, the main characters get strafed by an A-10, which never happened in the real story. It was actually a friendly fire incident with an Abrams tank.
That I can agree on. Keep in mind, contrary to what the movie says, the redtails did lose bombers to enemy fighters. Like many p51 squadrons though, they certainly put up an iron wall against the jerrys that made picking away at the bombers ever the more difficult.
Wouldn't you believe the wild maneuver at 0:48 could actually be pulled off? A P-51 pilot named, Richard Candelaria, pulled that same maneuver against a German ace and shot him down.
BEFORE the experts start saying this or that was wrong- This isnt a historical documentary. It's HOLLYWOOD and they ALWAYS change movies in order to make more money
For anyone doubting Lightning’s stunt the scene is based off an account one of the veterans recalled, they say they saw one of the red tails pull a stunt just like that
+megaman922934 Not at that speed with that high weight. The manuver is doable, but NOT under any of these circumstances. Probably doable if it was a slower A6M already in a climb with a stalling F4F behind him.

BoarhideGaming No I did not make up the 80% it's true.
Man the hell you mean with the Sukhoi Flankers. Su-30 Can Defo Pull A Cobra
@@VF000O Yeah, this isn't a cobra though, he basically did a backflip. The Flanker could definitely perform a similar maneuver but not this tight. Still, it's a lot more plausible than a fucking P-51 doing it.

lol let me point out the problems here
-the MG151 on the 109 would have shredded the P-51 if it scored that many hits
-the P-51 cant perform anything close to a kulbit like in the video, even less in battle
-the P-51's 50cals can usually not destroy a BF109 that fast, took quite a few hits, not just a short pass
P51 has a low G wing load so no.
RX-78 -2 well yeah but it's impossible for it to perform such a maneuver anyway, its just really fucked up lol even non aviation fans can see the lack of realism here
Sanya Bennett Really? So you can pull 20G's like that?
Also the 109 apparently are equipped with Stuka sirens. I just hate this movie!
That stuff is in every world war 2 movie that had planes except dunkirk.
that wasn't even close to the Jericho.
the P51 DOES actually have a siren whistle sound though when it flies overhead... Because of the bottom air intake... the others DO NOT sound like sirens...
@@EscanV That is actually the air inlet for the radiator. The actual air intakes are in the nose.

its what I call "Black magic"
Skogze No, that is playing WT with high ping for you.
Or the part in the movie where they strafe a fucking *LIGHT CRUISER* and cause it explode, all with 6 50. cals
Pringles Gaming 4 actually

"Dark Blue World" made in 2001 - It is based on the events surrounding the Polish pilots that flew Spitfires for the RAF after Poland was invaded.

Some minor liberties, but overall quite accurate and the flying combat is a close to real as you can get.

judging by how tight the turn was, in reality the plane would have:
A) Stalled, never finished the turn, or
B) had its wings ripped off by G forces
C) Pilot would have blacked out.
A little trick I learned. It's called breaking the laws of physics.

@Berke Seven Yeah 5 year old comment I know but this is not possible in any plane that does not have thrust vectoring
So I guess the tuskegee experiment was a succes

Tbh I've seen a I-153 Chaika do that maneuver so it is possible.
The Chaika's a biplane. Biplanes can pull similar shenanigans to this, but you're not going to do it in a monoplane unless maybe it's one of those Red Bull air racers.
About as realistic as U-571
All these people hating on this movie are the same ones that think American sniper is a true story
I don't believe an airplane can make such a tight turn. A nowadays fighter jet can, but I don't think a 1940's fighter plane could.
Modern day jets aren't turnfighters. There is literally no way that this could ever happen. The pilot would die from the gravitational forces.
It could stall and flip like that I guess but in a rigt such as that, I think not
You cant fly with 400 km/h and suddenly do a backflip and shoot down a plane afterwards. Especially not with a p-51d because it flys like a brick.
Baum MainBattleTank Yeah, p51s were some of the heaviest single engine fighters of the war, and red tails was generally an autistic movie

DSRT888 that flick at 0:42 is actually possible
Semptar suchus
No, it isnt.
Semptar suchus no its not please dont say things you dont know, the absolutely massive g force would probaly break the plane and criple the pilot
My favourite part by far 👌🏼😂😈🔥
When the show forgot how to deal with physics and engineering xD
When you pay close attention, it's almost a stall maneuver.
His last words before he died was NO! what a legend.

RC dogfights might be more accurate than this
