Mrs. America recounts the movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and the unexpected backlash led by Phyllis Schlafly, aka “the sweetheart of the silent majority.” Through the eyes of the women of the era, the FX series explores how one of the toughest battlegrounds in the culture wars of the 70s helped give rise to the Moral Majority and forever shifted the political landscape.

This is absolutely the best part of the series.

She got exactly what she campaigned for: she kept going on and on about how a woman's place was in the home. And that's exactly what she got. I can see now how the character of Serena Joy from "The Handmaid's Tale" was based off of her

Indeed she was inspired for Serena.

What really infuriates me about her is the fact that by doing the work she did, she did not abide by what she thought women should be (housewife and mother). The final moment of her through the window is great symbolism.

Yankee Countess -- Not exactly true. Schlafly also believed that a woman should have a choice to work outside the home.

Oh well, she got exactly what she campaigned for; she totally deserved it. No tears shed for her.

Phyllis Schlafly was a terrible person. She deserved to be tossed aside. Appointing Sandra Day O'Connor was probably one of the best things Reagan did as President. She was the swing vote on many important cases and she admitted when she was wrong. In 1986 she ruled against gay rights in Bowers v Hardwick. However in 2003 she ruled in favor of gay rights in Lawrence v Texas. She admitted she was wrong in 1986 and had evolved on the issue. Admitting one's mistakes takes a lot of courage and grace.

@@anneb889 Not everyone. Anti LGBT rhetoric is way worse now than during the W years. It was a wedge issue in 2004 but the focus was really only on marriage equality. Now the right is targeting drag queens. Teachers are often the only adult allies to LGBT kids and teens. Now now they’re facing penalties for being supportive to students in need.

She didn't really care about the ERA, she cared about power, fame, and influence. Her passion was defense issues but the Washington patriarchy laughed at women involving themselves in such issues, so she became the chauvanists' mouthpiece, because it served their interests to get a woman to mouth their talking points for them, just like it serves white interests for people like Candace Owens to say racism isn't real. She jumped on it as a career opportunity, it had nothing to do with how she herself lived her own life, although she was a for real homophobe.
