    Referring to your comment with the Log playback. There's isn't really a set and stone standard for this process. Canon C-Series cameras are typically shooting for network television and or documentaries. from the conversations I've had with a post-house they're dealing with quick turnarounds and so they use the proxies from the SD card to edit, and link the RAW for the grading. It saves them time with editing and also gives them the intention of exposure from the DP/Op, but when the time is right the RAW but gives them the thicker negative to fine-tune and make corrections. You could argue for Red that it's a hassle to change each clip in davinci to the proper log profile for the grading process.
    It may be worth trying to use the same lenses & filters next time. Just a quick swap if you're both standing in for each other. Blooming halation is usually a result from the glass - not the digital sensor. I do like the bloom from your red, but I usually am using diffusion filters on my shoots.

    Depending on your workflow and color space there are some advantages to working with the log. What your software is doing is conforming your 16 stops of dynamic range to the 6-8 stops of rec709. Because of this, you will lose a lot of highlight detail because it is getting squished. Also it is a misconception that you can just add contrast to a log image to make it normal but that is not the case. Best method is to use a color space transform to convert your raw footage into the color space and gamut of your project. Best to use IPP2 on RED with Redwidegamut and LOG3G10.

    You said the scarlet has a global shutter... pretty sure that just the komodo :)
    Also fairly sure the flare is due, at least partly, to the different OLPF.
    The thing that gave away the Canon was that weird drop into black. It's like there's no 'toe' to the image, it just clips to black really quick (around your jacket and such). I notice this even on their stills cameras shooting raw VS sony, fuji, etc. The bright parts look great, but trying to bring up the shadows is usually just raises the black level. It goes from pretty dark grey to pure black, without transition. Look at the two shots from behind, at about 50 seconds in, to see what I'm talking about.
    As for the LOG raw, it's mathematically more efficient, allowing you to use, say 12 bits, rather than 16 linear bits like the Red does, with minimal loss in information. Also, pretty sure Red still has patents on full 14/16bit linear raw in camera, and other companies have to pay them to be able to do that. That said, I always assumed Arri/whoever makes their sensor had a patent on DGO, I might be wrong, but it's likely that it's since expired, hence we're seeing it in other cameras. (though it's possible canon paid to license it)

      @@anthonyhoward-crow4180 Technically the 'motion mount' can give any red a global shutter, but it's an expensive accessory, with some downsides, and not super common.

    • @anthonyhoward-crow4180
      @anthonyhoward-crow4180 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SCrowley91 Thats cool, I didn't know about the motion mount. Either way thought, the global shutter comment didn't make sense in this situation since it doesn't produce a more "cinematic image", it just gets rid of rolling shutter, which isn't applicable in this scenario.

    The reason that I knew camera A is the C300 and camera B is the red is because Matt owns a Red, and Danny owns a C300, so therefore they would be shooting the other person with their camera.

  • @MrMacroJesseSky
    @MrMacroJesseSky 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Arriraw is a log encoded image. Raw is 16bit, but that 16 bit is impossible to use all of it, so the log encoding is a nice “wrapper” for all of that information. 16 bit linear raw is equal to 12 bit log encoded raw

  • @borneofilms
    @borneofilms 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for this. Both great cameras, for sure! The two other major pros for the RED are a) pre-recording and b) greater resolution. C300 also offers pre-recording but only a couple of seconds, whereas RED Gemini for example has 20 plus seconds pre record... or is it 30 seconds? I forget. Why pre-record and the added resolution are so valuable... join my masterclass LOL :)

    Full frame v lock is 300$ and its the best out there.
    About the flare, its probably the lens.
    Log photage is for total controll from blacks to highlights, and punch in colors. Its easier to build up a stand point then ripping it down.

    • @NOYBNOYB
      @NOYBNOYB 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      AoLP - Glad you mentioned all of this. -For anyone who didn't understand "Full Frame" is the company name for the v-mount battery adapter. -It works great with the C300 Mkiii and the camera gives you a couple minutes of warning time when the power starts dropping on the v-mount battery. -Matt, you have to share the Full Frame part info with your friend! Also, AoLP you are correct it is the lens - if you use a DZOfilm lens you get very beautiful flare. -I didnt like the look of the flare on the Red it looked almost like a haze not a flare. -Possibly TH-cam compression?

  • @NOYBNOYB
    @NOYBNOYB 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Matt, awesome video! Just wanted to mention one other thing I noticed. The footage of the c300 in the woods shows almost no bokeh. They both have a super 35 sensor right? I have the c300 markiii and the same lens (Sigma 18-35) and do notice its a little tougher to get that bokeh but the difference is really pronounced (by comparison to the red) when looking at the trees in the background. Thanks for the awesome comparison!

    FINALLY!! COLLAB WITH DANNY 🤩🤩

  • @anthonyfesce4073
    @anthonyfesce4073 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Let's start with the good stuff: Nice experiment and funny review.
    I also agree with your opinion that in here the RED Camera looks a tad more cinematic, even if in this case the work on the C300mk3 file was probably sub-optimal.
    BUT a couple of notes on the C300mk3 (because it's one of our cameras): the DGO Technology works from 24p to 60p, aren't you using some more intense slomo here? Well of course above that threshold the C300mk3 is not using its real plus and it's losing one stop of exposure.
    Second thing, I can't understand how you consider the Linear workflow a plus, the Log workflow for a professional DIT or Colorist is like wearing contact lenses in the morning.
    Third thing, it's quite improbable that a flare is somehow connected with some element that has not optical properties. Thus it's quite certainly the lens. Second option a filter. Not the sensor.
    Last thing: the WHY Canon and everyone else need to use a Log RAW file. Actually it's because of RED that patented the in-camera Compressed RAW and it has been gatekeeping that technology ever since. The only alternative to avoid having huge files is to use log RAW. CanonRAW Light is probably using some sort of compression (probably with the complacency of RED) but it can't rely on massive compression ratios so it necessarily needs to register it in Log.

    Camera A is the C300 mkiii. The colors and the smooth stabilization gave it away for me. And the shot in the puddle of the B camera looked very red and was it cropped?

  • @My123Tutorials
    @My123Tutorials 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I felt like TH-cam compressed that footage so hard that I could barely see the difference. ...or it's just me. ^^
    But I agree the C300 III looks way more digital and the RED more "filmic". I also think you could fix this by adding a diffusion filter and having some fun in post. Anyway... both looked great.

    I'm pretty sure that the bloom was coming from the RED OLPF, your RED had a Sigma lens as well...Anyway the RED was looking more cinematic to my eyes, but the look could have been matched with a diffusion filter on the Sigma 18-35 and C300MIII (even if it's not the same as an OLPF)

  • @alexlubensky
    @alexlubensky 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It’s the lens blooming, not the sensor. Also the defaul setting of sharpness in Canon Raw is set to 10, which actually the same as if you apply sharpening to your image. In XF-avc there is no sharpening, so if you set it to 0 in raw you’re going to see the real sensor detail. It’s Canon’s trick to make the raw look different in a perceptive way

    I don't understand the point of the "DGO" sensor and all of this supposed increased range if the highlights are so harsh? The Canon C300 Mk2 or the Red in these examples has a much smoother image to my eyes. The Arri Alexa has noise, but beautiful in the highlights. I'm not sure what the obsession with clean shadows, over highlight performance is about.

    Camera A: Canon
    Camera B: RED
    The Reason I thought this right away (before noticing who was filming which video,) is that Camera B's colors looked more REDdy while Camera A's looked bright and clean (as Canon is known for their awesome colors. What cemented it in my mind was the two clips at 1:01 . There, Camera A obviously had much more dynamic range than camera B. At 3:23 you covered it and I think that the more bloom is because the RED doesn't have as much dynamic range and so it can't retain the highlights as much
