This makes a lot of sense, since coincidentally, Caelid and the Consecrated Snowfield are the only two areas with above-ground Nox influences. If it were previously that you'd access these areas by uncovering the ground beneath, then their locations above-ground become far less surprising.
I suppose the theme of natural disasters plagueing the world over the course of the game still remains via Radahn/the burning Erdtree, so not everything was lost.

Its crazy how much stuff is left in the game files, FS has tendency to scrap stuff thats often pretty well developed(Kales questline, cut parts in ds1, DeS 6th archstone) which makes me pretty sad. I know a lot of this is cut for the reason and this one seems like it was pretty early in development but I wish that one day we will see a game from them that realized all their bonkers ideas in action rather than through data mining.

@@deathbyslipknot Bro I don't think you know how games are made. From Soft is pretty tight lipped about their dev process but their paper trails point towards something like 2000-2010 era Valve or Nintendo. Tonnes of iteration and prototyping, and some of these hints of the iterations and prototypes make it to the retail build, it doesn't mean From had to rush their game out lmao. Producers/directors have lists and lists of primary, secondary, and tertiary features, part of production is pruning those lists into something that can be made on a reasonable timeframe with the maximum impact. Every game has cut content, there's an entire wiki dedicated to it and more crucible knight fights sounds terrible to so it makes sense why it was cut.

Makes a lot of sense for the fingers to be dead now, then. And also explains some of the weird Graces on the upper levels of the towers. I don't think it would take us back to any era. The lore in all versions of the game is that the Crucible Knights were rejected by the current order, we have examples of them betraying and being imprisoned, so I think they killed the Fingers we see.
I do think they also planned for terrain changing events but ended up shooting themselves on the foot with time and resources.
Also, Floh used to be a Crucible Knight in the OOB CNT stuff. The one we could kill by falling through the ground. Bloodhounds are now servants of Caria.

This whole before/after cataclysms makes me think of your video of Leyndell when it's under siege and that NPC that seemed to be from before the time period where the game takes place. It makes me think that at some point the game might have been intended to take place during the shattering, or at least during some active "end of the world" scenario instead of you showing up to an already destroyed land. Of course the game taking place in a land that's already fallen is pretty typical for Fromsoft, but I could see them trying to be ambitious and make your character an active part of the cataclysm. Or maybe sequences like this could've been meant as some kind of flashback or time travel? Kinda like the giant memories in DS2. Or maybe this could've even been part of the cut dream mechanic? Like you'd go back through dreams to fight the crucible knights, and doing so would be what caused the areas to look destroyed like they are now.
Either way I can see why it ended up being cut lol. The elden ring map is already huge and ambitious enough, having to make pre and post cataclysm versions of each area would have been a lot of work! But it really does seem like the players actions permanently changing the entire game world is something that Fromsoft really wants to pull off. They've had plenty of examples of areas that go through "phases" like Leyndell, or Ashina Castle, or dark Anor Londo. And even the blood moon and the insight system in Bloodborne felt like things they probably wanted to change the whole game with, but were only able to have effects for a limited number of areas. Unfortunately it seems like that's still too ambitious of a goal for now, but I really hope it's something From can make happen in some future game! Radahn's meteor is one of my favourite moments in Elden Ring, and a whole game being based around the ability to change the map like that would be amazing!

    How it could have gone:
You visit each divine tower after completing a "continent" and killing its main boss. Then you defeat the tower's Crucible Knight, by doing so you trigger a meteor strike that nukes the whole continent. The Crucible knights all represent a different era of the past, killing them sort of undoes the results of that era having passed, returning the continent into a primordial, unformed state
The destroyed maps of the surface continents could lead to more underground maps like the eternal city
When you become Elden Lord, you can remake the world in your image and reform the continents in different ways, like returning everything to normal with the "normal" or Golden Order ending, bringing the Eternal Cities to the surface with Ranni's ending, turning everything into a Caelid hellscape with a Rot ending, or skeletons everywhere with the Fia/Godwyn ending...
those changes to the world carrying over into NG, so you'd choose a completely different game to play in the next run

For the "trigger the meteor animation", that's kinda interesting for the implications with the eternal cities. I'm especially thinking about the giant's mountaintop and the nameless eternal city (which isn't directly under that, but it's the closest).

I think this makes a tons of sense considering the origin of crucible knights. It seems to me that similar to albinauric archers, these crucible knights were droplets from the amber of the life crucible, the primordial form of the erdtree. The evidence are sufficient too, from the crucible knights set item descriptions, the high holy defense of the crucible sets compare to the high magic defense of the blue silver set. Crucible knights also don't bleed blood, they bleed golden amber. By defeating the guardians of the divine tower, who are the offsprings of life's crucible, triggers the historical events happened in times of the crucible, makes full sense.

Talented devs like those at Fromsoft set themselves up for success by creating a strong foundation which can be built upon in many different ways. It's likely not all of these areas was intended to have its own cataclysmic event but they were looking for the right location to have it out of a handful of options, and the engineers built in the proper hooks so the designers could test out their concepts in game. For whatever reason, it didn't work out. Maybe it was a design decision, technical, scheduling, or budget.

I'm usually one to play devil's advocate, and I'm going to do so again
The divine towers, while grand, don't really need a boss fight at the top of each one, especially if they were how you would grant power back to your runes as you do now.
I'm almost positive this was cut for that reason, why have the divine towers be another forced boss to activate the reward from the boss you just beat?
As for "plains meteor," unless I missed it you didn't really show a meteor striking caelid, which means it's most likely "plains meteor" means the cutscene is in the plains (ie caelid) as it is. It's very possible that in early drafts, you had to kill Radahn, then kill the crucible and activate the rune, and activation of that rune is what causes the meteor strike, and it was likely streamlined in the full game. As for the consecrated snowfield, it seems in early drafts much more of the game was accessible to the player, and often in open world games like this, they make interactibles and other things of that nature that can be activated at any time to ensure continuity. After all, if they decided to have snowfield end up being early game after early development having it be late game, a lot more work would have to be done than if they just had interactibles ready to go.
Overall, I get what you're getting at, but this, like most with Elden Ring, seems to be cut for player streamlining, and not so much because they couldn't get it done.
    That's just my two cents

I don't want an Elden ring sequel, I want a redux where they restore all the cut content and flesh out the ideas.... And add covenants. Make it the perfect game, it sounds amazing to change the geography of the map and go into different underground areas for some extra crucible and nox lore.

This would've been far more interesting than reducing the Crucible Knights to just dungeon bosses and the occasional enemy you bump into. Though for this idea to really work Fromsoft would've had to give each knight a different weapon. As it stands we only have the sword knight and spear knight, it would've been interesting if the remaining knights specialized in weapons tied to different stats such as dex, arcane and int.

Given the enormous moveset and how they tend to fly away to their death, the crucible knight was clearly a boss concept that got scraped and turned into a regular enemy. At least they had enough decency to make them not respawn after being killed. Most likely reason: crucible incantations, armor and weapons. Either a few bosses would have to drop tons of loot or there would be so many crucible knight boss fights that it would seem like a complete asset over usage.

There are currently 8 Crucible Knights in the game if i'm not mistaken, so they were cut down from 16? not such a bad idea, i mean we fight 4 spear guys and 4 sword and shield guys, guess fighting each of them 8 times was a bit too much :P

    • @gholosco1122
      @gholosco1122 ปีที่แล้ว +3

There are a few more than eight. We have
      - 2 in Limgrave: Stormveil cliff side (sword) and Evergaol (sword)
      - 3 in Siofra: on the way to the Gargoyles boss fight (sword & spear) and in the area accessed from the Four Belfries (sword)
      - 1 in Cealid: part of the Redmane castle boss fight (sword)
      - 2 in Altus: Auriza boss fight (sword and spear)
      - 2 in Leyndell: in the large round building (spear) and close to Radagon statue (spear)
      - 1 in Gelmir: Tanith's bodyguard (sword)
      - 1 in Deeproot Depths: Siluria boss (spear)
      - 2 in Farum Azula: next to petrified dragon (sword) and on the way to Boltdrake +2 (sword)
So that's 14 already. If there were 2 more on the Divine Towers of Limgrave and Caelid, we'd have 16 already.

Now what I'm wondering, if the Crucible Knights belonged to Godfrey (item description) and Marika made each of Godfrey's warriors Tarnished (Melina dialog), shouldn't that include the Crucible Knights as well? That might even explain why we don't see all 16, some may not have been called by grace yet. But it feels more like they're not considered Tarnished in the lore, although there's no explanation why.

just recently.. when i went to a divine tower, i kinda notice. the material of the building, is unlike any others. the texture kinda like.. an eroded stone works. very similar to a lot ruined pillars we see across the world, like the one in that mountain behind radahn arena. and the ruin strewn precipice. by the looks of it. these ruins is far older than even farum azula. as such.. i assume the divine towers are also way older, than even the erdtree itself.

It'd be so cool if there were more than 2 types of crucible knight... if each divine tower had a seperate, named crucible knight with his/her own unique fighting style. A cool side thing you could've done thru the main game, slaying Godfrey's 8 (instead of 16) knights. And beating a Great rune-holding demigod would grant access to one tower.
The final isolated tower would feature a 2v1, with 2 unique crucible knights built from the ground up to compliment each other in an engaging 2v1 boss battle.

All the divine towers are literally boss arenas on top, what the hell happened? It would've been lame fighting another Crucible Knight, but they could've done something cool like make you fight a spectre of the boss who's great rune you're trying to obtain with reduced health similar to the Godfrey boss fight but with the challenge of fighting in a confined space without summons. The first time I climbed a divine tower I fully was expecting to fight a ghost of Godrick again but we got nothing, the runes are just sitting there. Why couldn't they have given the game another year in development and finished all this stuff.

Starting to feel like the story of Elden Ring was wrecked as a consequence of development issues. So much cut content hinting at awesome lore that is inconsistent with the final product. I'm starting to suspect that Elden Rings story is as shattered as the ring itself. What remains is simply inconsistency masquerading as mystery.

    • @Knights_of_the_Nine

It really probably wasn't. We really are ignorant of the story development process. It's very typical for a story to evolve as you write it and be completely different at various stages.
