Things Jon got wrong, Civ 6 Edition:
    1) 20:10 The units you get from Hippodrome buildings are free in terms of _resource cost_ not money. So you can build them without horses and etc, and tanks etc don't use oil (which is actually quite handy) but they have their normal maintenance cost.
    2) 31:45 Holy Cities always exert pressure from their religion even if it doesn't otherwise exist, so even if the religion has been eradicated it has a chance to come back. That said, the pressure usually isn't really enough to overcome all the pressure of whatever religion has replaced it, so it rarely matters
    3) Jon appears to have entirely forgotten that Byzantium spreads religious pressure by killing units (even though he can see it happening in front of him, but hey that's -1 Perception for you). This is a lot cheaper faith wise than sending missionaries and it's definitely better to _not_ pre-convert in Dramatic Ages mode because you get a lot of Era score for converting cities of someone you are at war with (35:31). That said Crusade does give some reason to pre-convert regardless, but you only really need to convert the border cities - the very act of taking them will cause your religion to spread further into the enemy empire.

Things Jon doesn't know about Civ. You can stop your cities from revolting by stationing troops in them. Losing Arnheim wasn't necessary. Tilburg didn't need to be razed either, it's not like his army was spread out too thin, it was all centered in that area, would have been easy to leave troops in the city for a few turns until the unrest died down.

Note when you look at the world ranking and hover over "domination victory", it counts the number of foreign capitals you have captured first, military strength second, so at 53:40, you would have to look at the others military strength too, if you want to make sure you actually have the most military strength. Because it just counts "Jon have capture 1 foreign capital, he's leading" while everyone else (probably) have capture 0. But the runner up could have 350 military strength, and thus more than Jon.

  • @UthersonL

Many players miss this feature: if you turn on the ribbon in the options menu, you'll have an always-on-screen summary of each civ's situation (score; total military strength; science and culture income; current gold, faith and favours) to find the wealthiest trade partner, help you better know what to expect of them or decide who might be the biggest threat or the easiest snack.

There's a lot of impressive figures to choose from in Byzantine history. Justinian and Basil II aside, some other obvious choices include:
Heraclius (610 - 641): saved the Empire from the Persians after nearly thirty years of war
Leo III (717 - 741): successfully defended Constantinople from an Arab siege and, again, saved the Empire.
Constantine V (741 - 775): Leo III's son, fought many battles against the Bulgars, rebuilt the Aqueduct of Valens, created the _Tagmata_ and was otherwise successful in nearly everything he tried.
Constantine VII (944 - 959): the archetypal Byzantine Emperor, an intellectual palace creature whose writings are among the most defining for our modern understanding of the Byzantine world.
Nicephorus Phokas (963 - 969): The infamous "white death of the Saracens", a ruthlessly efficient general who reclaimed Cilicia, Crete and Antioch for the Empire, and reduced a hostile Emirate based in Aleppo to a client state.
Alexios Komnenos (1081 - 1118): brought an end to the post-Manzikert crisis and launched the Empire into one last period of resurgence before the decline became terminal.

@@olefredrikskjegstad5972 Good list. If you include Nikephoros Phokas, you might as well include the excellent John I Tzimiskes who replaced him. Nikephoros Phokas, John I, and Basil II are considered the apogee of Byzantine power.

    Ahhh, Emperor difficulty.
I feel so superior after winning my first 5 deity games in the last days. And I know that sucks. A lot. But I dooooooooo... I doooo... I had that stupid "ah yeah, emperor, uhuh uhuh", sipping on my imaginary tea, when I went to that part of the video.
I mean, it's no fun to play deity. At first. You really need to micromanage shit, react to everything that happens, have a loooot of luck (twice I had a godlike start, then two neighbours in the next 8 tiles, and both decided to attack, when I had the first guy under control the second guy declared, nothing at all to do there, tried to be friendly, but couldn't sell anything, so war on turn 20 and I did go for slinger warrior after the scout when I saw the first guy settle 4 tiles from me :D after 5 turns :D), and finish it out effectively. But hell, I had a turn 221 culture victory yesterday and it felt great. Could have gone sub 200 if I went to close-out-mode earlier, but I built some banks and harbour stuff because I didn't think it was actually over so soon.
It's really a great game. Started Civ with this one, no experience before - but I always loved those kinda games, Anno 1504, AoE, those kinda stuff. Loved to see a game like that on PS4, and it really really is a great game from the start - I loved to build everything, wonders, teer three buildings on every district in every city, until I saw the "you lost" screen in my first games. Then I started to see through the win conditions, hated (and still hate) religion, won several domination games because of culture and had no idea why, but I loved it. Then I looked at some youtubers playing civ, learned a lot, and well, now I play deity. It is really, really deep and I love that. And I feel like they made the highest difficulty a real good challenge. Tough, but beatable. The whole difficulty setting is quite good - to win constantly on a difficulty, you need to know stuff. To win the next difficulty, you need to know more. And there's not a single way to win it, you can win it by different approaches. Get high production citys which will win you the thing longterm, while you're planning ahead a long time - very possible. Completely bypassing industrial zones - absolutely doable (well, not on a space race). The higher the difficulty gets, the better the AI gets (by getting more and more bonusses) and the more you need to look at what you yourself are doing. And there's always a completely new game, since you need to use what the map gives you in each and every game.
Just a great game. What's 10 hours for one single encounter? ;)
