Hi Clarke, good to see something from you as you'd been missing from my downloads for a while. Having cancers removed isn't for the faint of heart. I've had two go rounds with the bastard, prostate, and bowel, and niether were particularly reassuring. However, I'm now 11 years clear of the last, bowel, and hope there's no more. I'm glad to hear they got all of yours. Your surgeon seems to have done a neat job of retaining your facial features, ugly as they are, so at least your wife and kids won't freak out. (That's a sick joke on my part. You look just fine to even a blind man). Looking forward to the cannon project. I take it you're actually intending to fire it when done? What sort of propellant and shell would be used? Surely not ball shot? There's a bunch of bronze cannons in Cuba laying around various sites. Think they'd miss one?. They're big enough to cast two of yours. Regards from Canada's banana belt. 🤞🇨🇦🍌🥋🇺🇦🕊🇺🇲🐖💩🐑👍
Squeamish?? Oh, that ain't nothing! I've seen my own skull, at least in the mirror. All jokes aside, I'm so glad they got it all! Take it easy and we'll wait for the next casting video.
Don't go rushing back into the foundry, make sure you heal up first. We can wait for new video's while you do that👍 Going to be an interesting project next year and i am wondering how you are going to handle the amount of bronze you need to melt all at once to pull that pour off.
Fun Fact- In the mid 1860's the Tredagr Iron Works in Richmond was using water cooled cores to improve the microstructure of cannon barrels. I read a story about it in American Heritage of Invention & Technology magazine about 30 years ago.
I think youtube causes cancer. I have been noticing that there seems to be an increase of creators with cancer. Thanks for the video keep on keeping on.
Engles Coach Works... here on youtube.. Best wheelwright we have these days👍. Dave is the master. Sorry you joined my club... the skin cancer survivor club.. Be well and take care of it..
Welcome to the south, battle scars are a thing to be proud because you have lived and are still living live to it’s fullest potential, thanks for sharing your life….
Good morning Clarke, glad you finally opened the patreon feature on your site. I too have been in a fight with a dermatologist, who brought a knife to the fight, and guess who won. Same surgery but not as extensive as your procedure. Just joined your Patreon club and will ship you the promised toy Monday .
Hey Clark: You need to find a scrap yard in the Vicksburg area that has one of those X-ray devices that work like a hand-held chromatigraph and give a read out of the elements in a given material. Good luck with the project!
Having done this plenty, that incision on your nose looks awesome. A good day is when they remove all the bad stuff. A better day is when everything is still the same shape afterward. Folks, get your skin checked.
Clarke, follow your doctors orders and get well. I'll enjoy watching you make this cannon, I used to make custom barrels for the black powder crowd including 2 bore rifled barrels. If ill health hadn't put an end to it, I could have set you up to rifle the bore on this barrel to make it the same as the Vicksburg museum's gun. My late wife would have liked this series too, she collected miniature cannons and would have had a full sized cannon in the yard if we could have afforded one.
hope you heal up fine and fast . My dad has nearly all the skin on his ears removed . It took forever to heal. It looks nothing like what you got going on. You look fine. My dad looked scary without the bandages. All swollen ears without skin is creepy. It probably 2 years to look normal. And doctors orders were to stay out of the sun. Wishing you a speedy recovery! ✌️
The engraving is great my friend. We are all super happy that operatable cancer surgery was/is a success. More and more of we older folk are suffering from a cancer of one way or another. Mine is in my bladder. I see the Chicken's Run is available now so I am more than SUPPER HAPPY to come along for this new adventure my friend. Onward eh.
I'll be frank with you: primarily I clicked on this video because of its title. But the project is interesting as well, looking forward to see what'll come of it
I'm glad to hear everything went well for you Clark. 👍👍 A little sad Dave Engels isn't making the "carriage" for the Cannon as it would've been some good content but c'est la vie.
Those cannons were notoriously fragile. That is why there are only 3 that exist. I contacted South Bend Replicas in South Bend Indiana,to inquire about having one of their barrels cast in bronze. I was told that, the foundries they use,for all their efforts, the barrels were hit and miss.Mostly miss. The barrel may look good but, when they drilled the bore, they would hit a big rotten spot,(dross). This made the barrels decorator barrels.Good luck with that project.
I wish you good health and a speedy recovery !! do not push your self to early make shore you are fully heald before you go back because the infrared radiation could do the unheald skin some damage and slow down the healing process and we all want you back to tip top condition asap
I look forward to seeing how you design the core box and how you will stand it up or likely hang it in the mold. I'm also curious if you would use some kind of chaplet to ensure that the core stays centered in the mold.
There were a lot of bells melted down in the south and poured into cannons during the war. The south had a huge problem producing bronze in that there were no high output tin mines in the eastern US. The south had a good supply of copper in Kentucky and Tennessee but for tin they were dependent on imports. Due to the constant blockade of southern ports, the amount of tin they received wasn't sufficient to meet the needs of cannon makers in the south. There were adequate supplies of iron in the southern states though so they put that to use but they never had the amount of heavy industry that the north had so it was a losing battle.
I thought you had invented “Talk to the Hat. We hope you have an uneventful recovery from the skin cancer surgery. MOHS surgery is very effective procedure.
Getting stiches out feels funny but doesn't really hurt. That's if who's doing it knows what they are doing. Have had alot of stiches removed in my lifetime. Taken alot them out myself with nail clippers and tweezers. Good luck and don't fret.🙂
Clark, my possible cousin. I am down in Bassfield if you need something let me know. The confederate cannon is an excellent subject and a credit to you and the state.
Man, I gotta tell you if I could swing a trip there to see you pour that I would definitely make it happen. I am new into casting and that would be a learning experience. Plus I want to make a .50 cal cannon:)
My guess is that cannon will be one of a few types of bronze. that being: G C90500 is composed of 88% copper, 10% tin, and 2% zinc, as is British Admiralty gunmetal. This could be the other formula they used as well: 83% copper, 14% tin, 3% zinc, and 0.8% phosphorus. But it is entirely possible to make cannon's of bell metal, and their is nothing saying that bells was not used in the making of that cannon but that is usually a 4:1 ratio of copper and tin. If it was made in the Confederate states who knows what it is made out of.
Curious about the paperwork behind making/owning a working canon. Maybe you could offer a 12-18” version in your store? Hope everything heals as expected.
Thanks for another great video. I just had Moh's on almost exactly the same place on my nose. And a small one on the other side of my nose, and a 2 incher on my neck. Its not that bad. Anyway they say chicks dig scars, right?
I'll give a second for Dave Engels - But I think that he's minimizing how many jobs he's taking on, lately - trying to catch up on lots of projects, himself. Good to see you got that skin cancer taken care of - get it done early before it can spread. Hope your recovery goes well! And - looking from the front - you barely notice it on camera.... until you point it out.
Did you consider for a canon model stuck of styrofoam sheets? It can be assembled around temporary core with rifling. After assembly, you swivel the core out. And burn the model out while casing. With your CNC router, it should not be a problem to make such slices.
I had some skin cancer removed from my forehead and the bandage they used to cover it made me think they used a pad women use when they have their monthly flow happening going
@@scottjones7279 A mindset? I've only ever heard of the term "Yankee" as a broad general term for people from the northern half of the country, or in the case of the British, they use "yank" to describe anyone from anywhere in the US. I think more specific terms would be helpful. I assume that the term "Yankee mindset" probably could be better summed up by something like "elitist mindset", no?
Yikes, what a terrible title for a video. I almost didn't watch it, but I had faith you weren't promoting that political trash. I'll watch and hope for the best.
Ah Clarke, I have been through cancer 8 times now (one variety has turned multifocal) 4 rounds of radiotherapy, and 2 years back a sqarmish cell carcinoma taken of my face as well, with that history I understand how you feel, but remember chicks find scars sexy 😁 besides when you are a good looking as us we need to give the competition a chance by trying to uglify ourselves! On a serious note mate, at least our oncologists are on top of it and the alternative to the fix is pretty grim "it's only rust" a bit of Bondo will fix it! Tony from Rural Western Australia 🇦🇺 🦘

YIKES - skin cancer! I have had it on my face also with the accompanying scars. But it’s far better than being dead. Glad you are on the mend.
What OP said mate. Skin cancer, hell cancer in general, is a nightmare.

Take care on recovering.. hope it won't hurt too much while healing... my experience is that most of the pain is in the end of the healing.
You're looking good, Clarke. Enjoyed our visit. I'll check in on you next week.
You could use scap and get an assay and modify the metal mix.
“All right, watch this!” I had to laugh. An ambitious project!!
Hope all goes well Clarke, take it easy in the meantime buddy, we can wait for content.

I'm glad that they got it all. It's good to see you are healing up well. Take your time. Your health is more important than a video.
Looking forward to the cannon project. Hope you heal up quickly, Clarke!
That doesn't look bad. I shattered my right leg in a fall in February. You should see the scars from that. They sliced and diced me.😂😂😂

Heal up fast. Stay safe and extremely healthy.
Scars on face are the best. I have a few. Stitches coming out kinda tickles, no worries.

With a scar like that, you could spin a tale about dueling with swords during your student years in Heidelberg. Take care. Wish you well.
Cool laser work!
you tell Rucker to check his machinist handbook, should find there some bronze recipies. good luck!
Man I miss Kilroy. Nuff Said
That’s gonna be a giant crucible!

@2:14 I laugh every time I see this view.
I am assuming it was a basil cell hopefully. I have had two and know the process so follow doctors orders and as you said, no worry about the scars.
I want to order a half scale cannon
Rest up and get well
That rifling reminds me of Henry rifling
For gun carriage plans, the Old Courthouse Museum has plans for period field carriages by Lutz
so dont feel bad all us old goats have been through similer yup it sucks
Engels would have been a good choice for a carriage. Hope Bob has some prior experience makin' wheels :-)
Gettin' stitches out's a breeze.

The Cannon was poured either using a sand core or a steel core. I just don't think it was poured solid and machined.
