There is something rather beautiful about speed runners coming out of retirement to teach the kids a thing or two. “Hey guys, just coming back from a 15 year break. I got a new world record by the way.”
The bombshell at the end. My jaw dropped outright. Every soul who's ever been within striking distance or WR in ANY stage is a monster, and the ones who've torn away huge chunks on their own are just too good to be believed. This is art.
I was around during the GameFAQs days! I joined the forums when the HRC topic was on number 10. I remember Tinister and OMFG I REMEMBER M64M. This was an enormous walk down memory lane. Thank you ptas!
I love hearing about TAS progress, because unlike Speedruns, it's not all just trying to have good enough reflexes until you win, or resetting & starting the run over if you don't get good RNG; A TAS is all about the routing & strategy, & not whether someone's luck or reflexes are good enough that day. & that's why I love it! Thanks so much for uploading this! Will probably comment more later!
I love your BTT content, this was another really well organized and written video. So much respect for all of the people pushing Melee's single-player content to its limit!
great video! also, not sure how possible it is, but it would be really cool to see over-lays of the first and last record set for each character to see how it's evolved.
@@PracticalTAS yeah I was thinking maybe there'd be an easier method of fixing the stage to a set view, similar to what stabilization software does. But I'm no video editor so I'll leave it up to the pros like you
I look forward to seeing the new Nana (or was it Popo) route in another video, but for now know that I found your channel through Peach and am glad to see more. Looking forward to the next time I hear the Smash voice declare "A New Record!"
As a casual smash fan who's never been big into speedrunning, this was incredible. Honestly amazing narration and storytelling to draw you in and keep you invested in this tale. Despite a 25 minute runtime I was hanging on every word. Seriously well edited!
First, I just want to thank the Melee community. It helped me to become a better person. Quick question tho: If I really want someone to enter a Melee "inspired" event, what's the best way to do so? Fox taught me that money talks. Marth taught me to grab onto any opportunity I see. But Roy, tho. He said that if I tell my mom that I love her and she tells me that I don't have to do a 9-5 to impress her, then I'll succeed in life. Who's advice should I listen to?
This is one of the coolest videos on gaming history I’ve ever watched. I never even liked melee but I’m just so happy there are games that so many people can band together to get excited about.
Wow! Easily my favorite part is the returning Samus runner, actually inspirational. One of those stories I wish i could explain to all my friends who don't know about speedrunning 😅
I actually met Mudi at a retro gaming convention in Germany. Someone was schmooving on the lone Gamecube setup which happened to have melee on it, so I played him in a game, got dumpstered, then he said "do you want to see something cool?" Then preceeded to complete Young Link's BTT trial in record time. After that, he told me who he was. Really cool guy.
Considering the progress over the previous decade this is extremely impressive. Would love to see more community challenges like this... Good clean fun.
Mario 64 Master is a mad man with the code sheets just to push Metroid world record just a few frames is remarkable 0/ McCloud and Pikachu and young link world records are impressive too :)
22:28 "first blood was soon struck" Hi, I'm Peter Griffin, here to explain the joke. what appears to be an error in scripting here is the inaccuracy in depicting the symbiotic relationship between the two words blood, and draw. at some point in history it became common for actions involving cutting human skin and rupturing the blood vessels underneath causing the blood to leak from out of the body into open air to be distinguished with the word "Draw". this is possibly most famously depicted in the movie "First Blood" which was released in 1982. in this film, the character Rambo, when talking to another character, says the legendary line, "they drew first blood, not me". granted, this use of the phrase is less literal than other uses, considering the first antagonistic action taken against Rambo was the harassment from the police officer which did not involve physical violence, but the point still stands. Now, as I was saying: this youtube video seemingly incorrectly uses the word Struck instead of Draw, though in this case the grammatically correct form of the word would be Drawn. this is NOT actually an error as has been pointed out by zero (0) other commenters before me, and there is no confusion that this comment needs to resolve. in truth, the writer of this script was actually referring to the way that the characters in beloved video game super smash brothers melee Strike the targets in one of the more technically inclined sub-game modes, "break the targets". in a classified interview sometime last month, user Practical TAS informed our interviewer that this choice of wording was intentional, and it spoke to the inherent violence of the game mode and the highly competitive nature of the speedrunning community. Practical TAS declined to comment further.
This video deserves WAY more views. Super well researched and really entertaining - obviously made with a lot of passion, just like the Peach video. keep up the good work mate!
There actually is a TAS of unlocking all the characters that uses SDs to get the game count up as fast as possible. It uses Captain Falcon because his combo of run speed and fall speed is optimal lol th-cam.com/video/gmOzz9kNV0M/w-d-xo.html
Your history videos are so dope, especially the BTT ones! And this one had the coolest arc so far. Super just my opinion but I think if you yoinked some music from summoning salt it would make the story seem more epic. Melee music is great but I've heard it so much I just tune it out. Idk, just something you could think about. Hope this video blows up!
Serious question: if competitive Melee players can modify their controllers with notches for more reliable angles between gates, what's stopping BTT speedrunners from doing the same thing?
I was concerned none of the Link's records would be shaved down during this race to sub 3, but mad props to MegaQwertification for managing to get Young Link a spot in this fascinating video with his dedication, you have my respect sir.

You can tell this video took a hella long time to complete. The TAS record shown at 7:35 is more than _5 months_ old at this point. It couldn’t have been an oversight, either, since the one who broke the record was Practical TAS himself.

That's an interesting idea, a full overlay might need TAS recreations of the records though since the cameras would get out of sync.
