It keeps active seniors being active and passing their experience on to a younger generation. I'll bet his character does not need the money, but needs the feeling of belonging to something better than sitting at home all day and wasting away.
You nailed it. I LOVE this movie and DeNiro plays his role to a T. He's happily retired, living comfortably, he has grown up children who he loves and who have lives of their own now and his wife is recently passed away. He doesn't need the money, he needs the sense of drive, belonging and routine he once had when he was a career man.
It would be great for businesses. There is a great need for the gentlemen's touch on today's aggressive takeover style. Even KFC management feels like heavy industry.
And if it gets to be commonplace, it will impose even more impossible expectations on young people who just finished school. If you can get an intern with 50 years of experience you will choose them instead of someone with zero. Internship is supposed to get you enough experience for an entry level job. And already the requirements for that include more years of experience than physically possible for a freshly graduated person. You really want to make it worse? How will people start a life and families if they can't even get an internship because every job is filled with experienced old people who already raised a family and now they're just bored and just need something to do? It's unfortunate that some people have to work past retirement because money is too tight otherwise but don't make it a desirable thing.
