Minor error: House Florent first supported Renly's claim to the throne following the other Reach lords. Renly himself mocked Stannis at the siege of Storm's End, facing him the fact that he lost his own wife's house's support. However, according to Petyr Baelish, House Florent was the first to bend the knee to Stannis after the assassination of Renly.

That's because the politics is about people and you can relate to their humanity. The Others and Dragons are powerful forces of nature with nothing for the audience to relate to with regards to humanity.
Dragons essentially represent weapons of mass destruction and The Others represent a harsh climate, the winter and hunger and people dying to these natural environmental elements. There's little room for narrative intrigue here.

    • @joebates93
      @joebates93 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Well, the others could be climate change in our humanity. Something impending, that people keep warning about, but nothing is being done about it because we're bickering amongst ourselves over petty BS and we may be doomed because of it. Idk what dragons could represent though. Nukes?

They really savaged some of these storylines in the show. Up until the end of season 3 it was still pretty faithful to the overall events. But after that, Stannis and Littlefinger were severely ruined. Both are meant to be extremely smart and capable rulers but theyre portrayed as a stock tragic figure and stock bad guy. It sucks. The show needed more politics and intrigue, and less spectacle and fan service.

    For all to read...
Even if Stannis does defeat the Boltons and restores House Stark, he would have some extreme challenges to face if he wants to take the throne, let alone defending against the others:
First and foremost, Aegon's Invasion is already gaining momentum by taking over the Stormlands. He has the most professional mercenary company that has a mixture of infantry and cavalry as well as a few elephants. That is a huge asset as elephants easily scare horses. Jon Connington would also have a ruthless and pragmatic mindset after years of exile, meaning that he and the Golden Company will fight dirty to order to win the war.
Second, Storm's End, the last piece of Stannis' land in Southern Westeros, is all but taken over by the Golden Company. Ironically, Stannis was planning to send Ser Justin Massey to hire them. Even more insulting, JonCon would take a lesson from ruthless Lord Tywin and violate sacred hospitality and kill Stannis' men there, taking the massive fortress.
Third, with Quentyn Martell burned to ashes, Prince Doran would eventually find out that his son is dead. With Aegon's victories, a letter from JonCon, and with Plan A considered a failure, he would resort to having all of Dorne swear loyalty to Aegon and go to war for him, no matter what. This would make sense considering that he wants "vengeance, justice, fire and blood" after the death of his sister and niece.
Fourth, Aegon's momentum will no doubt lure some "friends from the Reach." House Rowan would join because they are Targaryen loyalists. Ruthless Lord Randyll Tarly would also join Aegon under the promise of rewards and prestige that Lord Mace Tyrell would take for himself, at least on three occasions. Those three cases are ownership of Brightwater Keep, the home of House Florent, Randyll's in-law family; and the credit of defeating Robert and Stannis Baratheon (in the battles of Ashford and the Blackwater respectively). House Tyrell would NOT able to switch sides because of Margery Tyrell's marraige to King Tommen. As long as both of the newlyweds live, House Tyrell would have to stick with the Lannisters in the meantime.
Fifth, with Littlefinger as Lord Paramount of the Trident and regent to the Lord Paramount of the Vale, he basically controls two of the nine regions of Westeros. If Stannis is not quick enough, Littlefinger could have all of Riverlands and the Vale support Aegon instead of Stannis, possibly to gain even more power and prestige. Considering Littlefinger's current plans and with him hiding Ned Stark's oldest daughter, this is more than likely.
Sixth, the rearming of the Faith Militant and the rise of their High Sparrow has created a three-way fight for control of King's Landing against Houses Lannister and Tyrell. With Aegon's Invasion, the Faith could possibly support him over King Tommen. With more and more people joining them, chaos and violence will flourish in King's Landing.
Seventh, the murder of Kevan Lannister is the start of Lord Varys taking a more active role in order to make Aegon king. With his mastery of acting, he can use that to influence people such as the High Sparrow to either support Aegon or create trouble in the city.
Lastly, dragons will come to Westeros, no matter the outcome at the Battle of Meereen. While the Mother of Dragons might arrive with her three children, the Unsullied, and the Dothraki; It might ALSO be possible that King Euron Greyjoy could take control of a dragon with his sacred Dragonbinder horn (Possible R.I.P. Victarion) and cause havoc. Dragons coming to Westeros will bring fire and blood to everyone, including Stannis' forces.
So, in short, Stannis and his forces would have an extremely uphill struggle after the Battle of Ice.

Honestly of the 5 kings in this war Robb Stark was the most intelligent. He was brilliant on the battlefield and was crushing the Lannisters but he knew that he needed help. He wanted peace with Renly because he knew if he could keep Tywin busy Renly had a great chance of taking the Iron Throne. We wanted peace with the Greyjoys because he knew Balon only wanted to be an independent kingdom like the north and their alliance would cripple the Lannisters on both land and sea. However the greed and stupidity of the other kings cost him his goals because they didn't think Robb's plan would work. Imagine if Theon was able to convince his father to side with the North. That would be an alliance no one could stand against.

The thing I love about this War is about the politics regarding the noble houses, how just a mistake (the execution of Ned Stark) can start a massive civil war, how wispers of a possible truth may inspire many people to take advantage. Also I love how this wars teaches us that wars are not only won through battles, I mean Robb Stark was never defeated in battle but a series of mistakes made him lose the whole North, the war and his life. And most importantly, this showed how humanity always finds a way to destroy itself when there are things that we should take care of instead of pitty kings. The Others are that example, we know they are coming, that only a united Westeros can defeat them but this war has weakened everyone, no matter who wins this war, if they don't stop now, this will be the end of all and the coming of the Long Night once and for all

After reading tons of fanfics on what could have been, I will never fail to look at the books themselves and see how this is literally the worst case scenario through and through. Constant, cataclysmic war that has totally enraptured the 7 kingdoms minus dorne and the vale, and look at the losses. The riverlands is more a memory than a reality, depopulated and ruined to shit. The north has been betrayed, invaded, and has fought itself many times over, with the western coast under years of strain from the ironborne, house bolton stubbornly holding onto their gains in the midst of the worst winter in history, and the houses of the north still not in accord all the while a vestige of the war of 5 kings continues to push for his claim up there. Based on what we know, it looks like (and i truly hope) that stannis will win in the books against the boltons, but at what cost?
Say he wins winterfell with whatever troops survive, winter is already here. He will undoubtedly march south, likely taking moat cailin and meeting up with hired sellswords from braavos. The what? March once again against the lannisters, only this time they will be without tywin, likely fighting themselves in some way in kinds landing if the show actually displays anything, Ok, so with an army he will fight agains the weary and dying in the riverlands, perhaps eliminate house frey for good and march toward kings landing with mostly foreign swords, since thats almost al thats left. Dorne surely backs Aegon, although im convinced hes a mummers dragon, and it breaks my heart that Jon will probably continue in the north, despite the fact that he is clearly the trueborn heir that he is. So then you probably end up with dorne and the "stormlands" (golden company) fighting against the reach, while the reach itself either wins against euron in the south, or some sort of kraken blood sacrifice makes things go apeshit. Now the reach is being ruined, when their food is desperately needed in the north where the real fight is taking place. Regardless, this is just the renewed war for the throne.
whats left of the lannisters may end up fighting against Stannis much as they fought against Robb, with some sort of northern support because I suspect a stark comes back to winterfell, likely Rickon or Jon perhaps. Whether the Tyrells die in Kings landing or not, the reach is in an insanely bad situation, all the while Daenarys eventually takes dragonstone and begins her own war for the throne. I suspect that Baelish, with the corpse of the riverlands and the vale, supports the lannisters and does something with Sansa once he gets her. Now what??
By the seven this is constant war and loss, while the white fucking walkers are probably taking the damn wall with an undermanned, understrength, non-unified nights watch, not even accounting for a possible horn that just blows the wall to bits. Now, the war for the dawn is beginning in what? the last two books that will never be written? And instead of my rose tinted glasses versions of fanfictions where the kingdoms are unified, prepared, sometimes more dragons and riders even, where even then they take considerable losses in pursuit of victory, instead the situation is literally the worst case.
The north is devastated, not unified, and bled dry. The white walkers trounce the north no questions asked if the wall can't hold for some time. People across the kindgoms offer no support to the true war, they are either dead or dying, and have bigger fish to fry as the blackfyre rebellion occurs for the last time, a targaryen with 3 dragons is probably burning lannisters and members of the golden company, and the lannisters exist in tatters as do the reach if dorne and Euron tag team both sides. So much for food i guess. The throne is a joke more than ever, the vale has forced under the command of a scheming lunatic, who will believe he has a chance at the throne before he believes in grumpkins and snarks.
The end result? Stannis (one of the few great commanders left) probably dies in the riverlands or in a second battle for kings landing, or my favorite to daenarys who just puts him out of his misery. A mummers dragon sees initial success, only to have to come to terms with the fact that he literally is a mercenary king, and unloved by the people. He either also loses to the true dragon, or horrifies me with initial success, or god forbid an attempted assassination or marriage to the true dragon. I have no idea how GRRM slots Jon into all of this, he either rises to become a protagonist in its fullest sense, or falls to the wayside trying to convince people of the true war, at least initially.
I Don't see how the burned out husk of winterfell, or any of the north for that matter (save for maybe bear island) makes it through the initial while walker invasion. The walkers gain considerable forces, and at best i see a stand by the neck from the forces of the living, if they are even ready by that time. Baelish has to die before anyone commits to this war, i Dont think the lannisters could be of any help, the reach is either in disarray or at best unwilling to help either, perhaps dany helps but what about Aegon? He is fresh in the conflict when he invades westeros, would certainly not be on Jon's side if the truth comes out, and perhaps won't even ally with Dany as they both want the throne for themselves. Does he die too? With his fresh army of mercenaries, not that they would fight against the white walkers, they would probably flee to essos long before that.
THIS is the worst case scenario, and it is what GRRM loves to contemplate and write about. It is much more accurate to humanity itself than the shit I read, although I fear that this could end up with the white walkers... winning... I mean we don't even know if they have a night king, we have no idea if killing one takes the wytes that they raised personally, and we Dont have an inkling of knowledge as to their powers when it comes to bringing true winter to the continent. With invasion after invasion, civil war after civil war, there is an unforgivable amount of animosity between sides--
No one will ever trust the Iron Borne again, nor after two civil wars and now Eurons nonsense. Where they made all these boats, where they got all of these sailors is beyond me. The Lannisters are fucked in reputation and in leadership with Tywins death, and has burned bridges with the riverlands, north, perhaps even the reach is Cersei does what she may do, and was already an enemy of Dorne, whatever their plans are. (Not to mention the stormlands and vale). Who gives a shit about a throne at this point, the kingdoms are pretty much completely disunited now no matter the outcome. Perhaps only the dragons can reign in the kingdoms reluctantly, and dany would have to be pretty flawless to do so, which i suspect she will not.

@@Darius0109 Jon I agree but could be a subversion of expectations if he comes back changed or if he does not end up as a true protagonist. As for Stannis, I wouldn't call that fanservice for two reasons: One is that if the northern conspiracy is true and if he does indeed use the ice to sink the frey army, then that is both an earned redemption of the blackwater and a believable coup against Bolton rule, meaning that Stannis wins convincingly and less like the miracle that was the Battle of the Bastards. Second is that Stannis winning is allowing him to descend further into madness, George has already confirmed that Shireen meets the same fate in the books, so it would be less fan service if he ends up being an antagonist himself. On another note, I do not consider things fan service when they allow for the story to be expanded upon, and I simply think that Stannis' camp offers better story than the Bolton one. No good POVs now in Winterfell, I would rather see through a returned Davos or something the clusterfuck that would be Stannis trying to rule over the north through this mess...

...in James Hibberd's book "Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon"
(talking about the 2013 meeting with D&D) "It wasn’t easy for me. I didn’t want to give away my books. It’s not easy to talk about the end of my books. Every character has a different end. I told them who would be on the Iron Throne, and I told them some big twists like Hodor and “hold the door,” and Stannis’s decision to burn his daughter. We didn’t get to everybody by any means. Especially the minor characters, who may have very different endings."@@Darius0109
So not only did he plan (in 2013, obviously could change over time) for a similar fate for Shireen, he explicitly said for this book that it was "Stannis' decision", which insinuates that he will at least be around long enough for that command to be given. Now, he could retreat with the remnants of an army to Castle Black or Eastwatch, and make the order there out of desperation, but at the very least his story does not end at Winterfell based on existing evidence.
There is the "Frey Pies" theory that Wyman has baked three Freys into a pie that is served at Ramsey's wedding feast, there are possibilities like poison, or simply killing Bolton leadership and the army choosing to retreat to the Dreadfort rather than continue a siege without leaders. Or a passageway could be opened in the night for the besieging army, while the guards are drugged during a feast or celebration, While Stannis' force is enjoined by other Northern houses that switch sides.

@darius0109 late by several months but as for the Ironborn most of their men is mostly because they actually haven't lost any real decisive battles in the war yet. The one's left in the North were mostly skeleton garrisons with Moat Cailin having only like 65 defenders with only 55 being actually capable of fighting (which them holding off the Boltons for as long as they did that's impressive). So their manpower is mostly because besides Asha whose in the North the Ironborn are united, have most of their manpower, and as for their ships well they're longships. Even the Iron Fleet ships while larger likely wouldn't take too long to make. And the favored Ironborn naval tactic is to board enemy ships and then take said ships for their own so a good portion of their navy is filled with taken mainlander ships as Theon notes in one of his POV Chapters and since the Ironborn wear armour even when they're on their ships they have significant advantage over the other mainlanders so long as they board their ships and as shown with the Taking of the Shield Islands by Euron they're led by someone whose a competent military leader.

Melisandre deliberately unleashed the baby WITHOUT permission so that when Renly is killed under mysterious circumstances, Stannis believes that it was the will of the Lord of Light. As Professor Attewell of Race for the Iron Throne said regarding Stannis' seeing Renly's death:
"When viewed in context, I think we should take him at his word - that Stannis subconsciously experienced the assassination of Renly but did not order it. Earlier in the same chapter, when the parlay is debating whether Brienne killed Renly, Stannis cuts across the argument by saying “the Lord of Light willed that my brother die for his treason.” For all that Stannis might not be the most fervent R’hllorite, he clearly has come to believe in Melisandre’s prophecies."

@@DrSwiftkiller But then if Stannis wasn't apart of the assassination how comes Melisandre obtained the Kings blood to make the shadow. Doesn't she need kingsblood in order to perform her magic? Stannis and Shireen where the only ones around Melisandre that have kings blood (as they had not gained Edric Storm yet) and It's never implied that Shireen had anything to do with it so it had to be Stannis's blood she used.

@@amanimckenzie32 King's blood was never an ingredient to make a shadow assassin, only the life force of a person. Shadow magic is not exclusive to followers of R'hllor. Melisandre deliberately leaves out information to Stannis so that his faith in the Lord of Light becomes stronger. She even offers to make more shadow babies with Davos in ASOS, Davos III:
“Is the brave Ser Onions so frightened of a passing shadow? Take heart, then. Shadows only live when given birth by light, and the king’s fires burn so low I dare not draw off any more to make another son. It might well kill him.” Melisandre moved closer. “With another man, though…a man whose flames still burn hot and high…if you truly wish to serve your king’s cause, come to my chamber one night. I could give you pleasure such as you have never known, and with your life-fire I could make…”

@@DrSwiftkiller Oh I never knew that you can do it with anyone. Anyways even if you can use any blood don't we know that Melisandre used Stannis's since she said in the quote you just used 'The king's fires burn so low I dare not draw any more to make another son. It might well kill him.' We also know she used Stannis since after the death of Renly and Courtney Penrose he looks drastically older. And also if her magic doesn't require Kings blood why does she need Edric as a sacrifice.

Basicly in books Aegon Targeryen(the one that was supposed to be killed during sack of Kings Landing before events from book and TV series) is revealed to be alive at some point. Because of Vays scheming, Golden Company of mercenaries side with him and they invade Stormlands at the end of V. I think it happens before Margaery trial.

It's unfair to say that Catelyn started the war. I'd argue tensions already rose when Jon Arryn was murdered. But Catelyn should have taken Tyrion north instead of to the Vale of cuckoo Lysa. They'd at least had time to talk if they had gone north

Please, someone could shed light on who is Aegon VI? Is he the son of Elia Martell, and is he still alive? I haven't read the books yet. Isn't Danny the 'last' known Targaryen in the books? Or Aegon VI = JS? (This last doesn't make sense according to the video.)

    • @Atromboniste

In the books, according to lord Varys, he swaped Aegon with a random kid and sent him to Essos with Rhaegar's best friend Jon Connington.
There is a theory that this claim is false however and he is in reality a Blackfire, a member of a bastard branch of house Targaryen (maybe you've heared about the Blackfire rebelion?), a fact that both him and Jon C ignore.
That is believed to be the reason that the golden company (a merc company created by the Blackfires) and lord Varys(who is believed to be a Blackfire himself) support him.

    • @ubelyildmar2368
      @ubelyildmar2368 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Wow, thanks! It would be a crazy plot twist, if this would appear in the show. The producers didn't leave much options for some of the characters (e.g. Varys) in the show, though. What a pity.

    • @gfilmer7150

@@ubelyildmar2368 If Aegon were in the show, it wouldn’t solved the many pacing issues with Seasons 5&6. It also would’ve been a much more engaging story than Dany vs. Cersei in Seasons 7&8. Hell, Aegon becoming loved by the people and Varys using propaganda to make him more loved and Dany look more like a villainous barbarian would explain why Dany burns King’s Landing.

The Realm will be a terrible shape. It would be divided between three kings and The Iron Throne would be plagued by so much corruption. With a divided realm means all out war, which means so many men don't have to die will die in the constant wars caused by that vile traitor. Also, so many brothers would fight each other over lands, so even more people will die.
