I worked the airfield for 23 years. Great place to work with all the people in the department. Retired this year and I’m gonna miss this place. The snow removal was the best part of my job on the runways. 21R- 3L was always the last to be cleaned or left closed during significant snow storms
No that was Anglin or another contractor who took care of the de-ice pads. 4 pads and the taxi ways and runways was to much for us to handle. We did them sometimes on light snowfall days. They’re called in after 2” of snow I believe
I could seriously watch this all day......thank you for uploading. I'll be making my first trip into DTW in about a month from now - coming back from Paris. Looking forward to it.
The 757 is truly; the sportscar of airliners. Take note of how little runway is used and it has the ability to simply climb. To cruising altitude without the step approach the 320 and 737s must take
jmurphy1973 One of my most enjoyable flights involved the 757’s daddy, the 727. I had a late Sunday night flight on Delta’s 727-200, a former Western Airlines aircraft, It was a SLC-DEN flight just 45-55 minutes with 3 passengers and a couple of cabin crews. The FO moved us to the rear and had a surprise waiting for us. Rather than a rolling takeoff, it was a stand on the brakes while the three engines were winding up, release the brakes and really fly, takeoff. We lifted off pinned to our seatbacks, Once at 12,000 feet the angle of attack increased and it seemed like we rocketed over the Wasatch Range. When I wrote “the 737 and 320’s need to take off in stages” it means the aircraft flies to 19,000 burns off fuel then it can move to 25,000 burn off more fuel before moving up to 29,000 etc. While the 727 and the 757 can fly directly to their altitude without stages other narrowbodies cannot. The altitudes ,mentioned are pulled out of the air the flight plan and ATC decide how to implement the stages. The ride that night was about the most enjoyable one I can remember, there wasn’t much of any traffic that late, I’m sure we were given pretty direct routing, the flight was early.
Bobby Paluga that’s not true delta was getting 727s before that and got them in the northeastern merger. If you look at tail numbers the delta ones were all DL ending and westerns were WA
Jon Hanf You’re far too sure of yourself, please know what your talking about before you tell someone they’re wrong. At the April 1987 merger Western had 46 727-200’s EVERYONE went into Delta’s inventory and were repainted in Delta’s colors. I flew on a former Western Airlines 727 with a former Western crew based at SLC. For 2-3 of those Sunday nights I flew with the same crew holding that same line. Many of those 737s and 727 were serviced at SLC Western/Deltas maintenance hanger. The Northwest merger with Delta occurred Oct 2008, 21 years after the Western merger. Somehow you have badly confused the mergers. Western Fleet At merger-Boeing 727-200 46, 737-200 19 40 on order, 737-300 3 14 on order, DC-10 10. “The Western brand was discontinued and the employee workforces were fully merged on April 1, 1987. All of Western's aircraft were repainted in Delta's livery, including ten McDonnell Douglas DC-10 wide body trijets. Delta eventually decided to eliminate the DC-10s from the combined fleet as they already operated a considerable number of Lockheed L-1011 TriStar wide body jetliners-a similar type when compared with the DC-10. Western's former Salt Lake City hub became a major Delta hub, and Delta currently uses Los Angeles International Airport as a major gateway and hub as well”
My mouth is wide open from pure joy. Good morning My DC-10. You were a former United Airlines Baby. We go way back when we both lived in Denver. It is Wonderful to see you again. Shukrun, Thank you.
Stapleton was my old sabbatical place. I would park along side the fence near the runway and critique takeoffs, what I now call lift ups and landings. I miss those wonderful days. Thank you United Airlines.
I love all the heavies that Boeing makes! 747’s (sadly out of service) 757, 767, 777, 787 etc. They are such beautiful birds and I’m so so thrilled at the fact that these US carriers take such good care of them! Great spotting video mate! Liked and subbed
Love the sounds, but I didn’t realize that an E2 or a 717 were quite as loud. Your camera took excellent video images as well as laying down the sound. You have a great viewing place as well as a damn good zoom. Is it just me or do 319’s ;look weird as hell to anyone else. Love the PSA color scheme, now that was a great airline.
My grandparents farm in Romulus is a runaway, not to mention the former Nike Missile base at Merriman and Superior. My moms parents farm is the UPS facility and what’s even funnier is I work for those guys. What you’re missing out on is the extensive cool history of the Romulus Air Base, the wac component, the ferrying of lend- lease aircraft and the military aircraft crashes and lives lost in that time period. Not to mention air shows and the former National Air Guard unit that flew several fighter types.
American Airlines with a PSA Livery.......AWESOME! I used to fly PSA frequently, does anyone know why AA has painted one of their jets to look like PSA? Gotta love the smile!
They did all the paint schemes of airlines they have taken over all the years as a tribute. Several planes are painted with the various airline livery... The best one being the AA Astrojet!!!!
Thanks! And yes you're right, but all of FedEx's DC-10s are known as MD-10s because they upgraded the cockpit (to the same as the MD-11) to no longer require a flight engineer. Thus, they renamed it the MD-10
Interesting, I knew they converted to the two-man cockpit, but I was unaware that they actually re-designated it to the MD-10. Makes perfect sense, though. Thanks! And keep up the great videos, I could literally just sit and watch them all day! 👍
I’ve got footage of 2 747’s taking off on 21R-3L which is just an 8000 ft runway. Also the Concord landing and taking off on 22L-4R way back in the early 2000’s
going on my first ever plane in 5 weeks to Detroit....going from Tucson to Denver then to Detroit taking off will suck as i hate heights but arriving will be relief...haha this video helps first tine flyers as to what to expect...lol

Yeah, they definitely have some really old narrow bodies. MD88/90s, 757s, NWA's A320s, and 767-300s are ancient. They're fast approaching 30 years old. The narrow body fleet has gotten and is getting much younger. They've ordered 400+ new 737-900ER, A321ceo/neo, and A220 frames. We won't see the MD88/90 for much longer. I don't think they want to part ways with the 757s.
And most of the planes are former Northwest or AirTran. They took over Northwest, but got a deal on like 80 Boeing 717's from Southwest/AirTran merger, thus the tail numbers end in "AT". Great deal for Delta as they are essentially the last version of the DC-9/MD-80/88/90 which Delta had hundreds of in the fleet.
@@LeppAviation Haha.. exactly.. on break at the deice pads, I'll get my camera, get a nice close up of a A346 or something and then when an RJ passes I just put the camera down. I wonder how the pilots feel, no attention with their planes. haha
Never realized Delta flies so many old aircraft...damn. Time to renew the fleet...you're making plenty of cash with all the 767s you've had for over 25 years.
Delta has an older fleet, but they do a great job at maintaining the fleet. Most of the older planes have new interiors and the passengers think it’s a brand new airplane.
I will hop on a Delta MD88/90/Boeing 717 any day despite age. Those planes are tanks and Delta has crews with many hours working on or flying them. Love the 3/2 seating too. Odds of getting stuck in a middle seat only 20%
Great job with tagging all the planes with their ages. I bet Southwest wishes it had back all of the Boeing 717 ships they sold off to Delta after they took over AirTran! Those suckers are bulletproof and don't get grounded like the 737-Max 8
Detroit Metro is Very under rated if you ask me
Uncle Chuckles Yes it is!!

I worked the airfield for 23 years. Great place to work with all the people in the department. Retired this year and I’m gonna miss this place. The snow removal was the best part of my job on the runways. 21R- 3L was always the last to be cleaned or left closed during significant snow storms

Thanks for the compliment. But it was both shifts I directed along with others that helped
Huge responsibility working there with the safety of thousands in your hands. Have a great retirement
I teared up seeing the famous smile of PSA. Haven't seen them since I was a kid in the 80s.
Love the "Flying Pencil" at 3:00
And I don't mind Delta, never had an issue flying with them, but I really miss seeing the big red tails of NWA.
An A340-600 is also an flying pencil,i think
Hehe, that's only -200, 757-300 is a real flying stick
flying pencil lmao
All amazing aircrafts but that fedex MD 10 stole the show imo
Wonderful graphics and video...thank you so much.

Bobby Paluga great point and yes it’s a true workhorse
I've always told my son it was a hot rod. Got to fly on a nearly empty one from MSP to DTW in the late 80's. Awesome plane.

I just drove under the taxi ways today as I cut to Eureka rd from Middlebelt. Always go this way to watch the aircraft.
Great video! You did your homework with the labels as well. Lots of fun to watch! +1

Amazing as always!
That 43 year old DC-10-10 looked and took off like it was new. They should all be unretired and put into service. Your videos are awesome.
Love the PSA retro A319. One of my earliest flights was on a PSA 727. The first was a Piedmont YS-11 with a 737-200 return.

Except for then 787 the 777-300er oh and let's not forget the A380
The 717 is actually one smart looking plane.
Kudos !! MD10s are pretty rare these days !! +1sub

That’s just the aviation channel I have. I used to have it on this account but I don’t like doing it on this one so I made a new one.
Actually, that was an MD-10 (DC-10 with an MD-11 cockpit).
hello,where did you film from?
Great video! A minor correction though; @1:07, the FedEx (N396FE) is a DC 10, as it pre-dates the McDonnell-Douglas MD model designation.
