COOi Sustainability Coding Bootcamp 2024

As we commemorate Mandela Day, I’m thrilled to reflect on the COOi Sustainability Coding Bootcamp, which took place from June 30th to July 5th. This bootcamp was a true embodiment of Madiba’s legacy, fostering education and empowerment among 31 young girls from four different schools.
Despite some initial changes in attendance, the energy and dedication of the participants were palpable. The inclusion of new faces like Andiswa Sibisi and Simphiwe Mlambo only added to the vibrancy of our group. Under the guidance of three dedicated teachers, these bright minds delved into frontend and backend web development, engaged in interactive coding exercises, and showcased their creativity during our coding hackathon.
The week was filled with learning, laughter, and the forging of new friendships, as the girls bonded in their mixed dorm arrangements. This experience wasn’t just about coding-it was about building a community, fostering resilience, and empowering the next generation to dream big and work towards a sustainable future.
As the Marketing Lead behind this initiative, I am incredibly proud of what we achieved. This bootcamp is a testament to the power of education and hands-on learning in shaping future leaders. It also serves as a powerful reminder of Nelson Mandela’s words: "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
