  • Concrete Tables // How To Concrete Tables // Outdoor Furniture … In this video, I tackle concrete tables for the very first time. I really wanted white concrete for the tops of these patio tables to give a nice contrast between the white oak and sapele bases. Concrete Countertop Solutions offered to supply the white concrete countertop mix, pigment and sealer to help accomplish my vision. The result was exactly what I wanted and I’m super pleased with the look and finish of the concrete table tops. Since these concrete tables will live outdoors, I wanted a durable finish with UV protection. Total Boat offered up some of their great products to help as well! For a bombproof finish, the first couple coats of finish would ideally be the TotalBoat Penetrating Epoxy to seal the wood, followed by 4-6 coats of the Gleam 2.0. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t on my side as the cold winter temperatures rolled in, so I skipped the epoxy coats and went straight for 4 coats of the Gleam. *(See below for a 15% off coupon code for TotalBoat products)*. I also used different joinery methods on each table base to show you what can be done if you don’t have a Domino and want to use traditional drawbore mortise & tenon joinery. #concretecountertops #concrete #patiotables #concretetable

    Keith, man you really are a great educator! I’ve been doing this stuff all my life, and I’m learning So much from you every video I watch. I’m not amazed because I want to learn, therefore I do! At 57 years old I feel that if I stop learning I will die... I’ve spent my career as a welder/fabricator and I plan on spending the rest of my lifetime becoming a craftsman in al other trades!

    Nice job. I just completed a concrete top for my outdoor grill station but used Rapid Set brand mortar mix I purchased at Home Depot. This stuff is amazing. Did 1 1/2 inch pour which required no reinforcement and took it out of the form in one hour.

    Awesome project, as usual. The only thing I would have added is a drip inducer to the bottom of the table top before the concrete set. At this point, I think a small bead of caulk or silicone a 1/4 inch in from the bottom edge might do the trick. Probably not necessary but the devil is in the details! Lovely tables! That 3° angle really adds an evolved geometry to the look of the tables. Given that outdoor surfaces are rarely flush, did you need to make any adjustments or temporary wedges to make a straight and wobble-free surface? Tx for the video, another great one 👍

    These tables look awesome.! I love the combination and design.! 🔥 And as a little trick i picked up recently from a video of "JBo Airbrush" for saving your finnish dripping over the rim and side of your cans, you can make a V-shape with tape just on the inner rim of the can opening. That way the finnish runs over the tape and doesnt get caught in this groove or runs down the sides. Also makes pouring more accurate.

      @@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking hahaha love it.! 😂 I found it unbelievably satisfying to peel the V-shape tape off and seeing the super clean can underneath. Just like removing the tape after a miter glue up. Thanks for your engagement in the comments, i appreciate it 😎 have a wonderful christmas and all the best ✨ (don't feel forced to reply. No need😂😂)

    Outstanding job Keith! You're an educator for sure. Any idea how durable the concrete top is in terms of weather?

    • @KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking
      @KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much!! According to the manufacturer, the Aqua Thane M35 coating that I put on it will hold up well outdoors. And if it starts to break down over the years, it's such a small area that it can easily be re-coated.

    Great build, I'm a fan of the white/wood combo. How have these held up to the weather so far?

    • @KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking
      @KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking  ปีที่แล้ว

      The white concrete is still perfect! The white oak needs a cleaning, but it's still stout and no signs of decay.

    Very nice work! Curious, were they at all top heavy, and what wood species did you like working with the best? Thanks.

    • @KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking
      @KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! The tops were 50 pounds each, so a little awkward to flip and lift, but not too bad. I prefer the white oak because it’s much harder and isn’t as susceptible to damage as the sapele. I also prefer the color and grain of the white oak.

    First TH-cam question like and question EVER. First of all your style, explanation of technique and commentary was great. I have literally only built one thing out of wood in my life and am looking at changing that very soon. I am currently between houses while waiting to finish building and then close on my new home. So I have been binge watching wood channels EVERY night for over two months. I have now convinced myself that I can build anything and am ready to take on the wood making world, lol. Anyhow, I am curious, did you sell these? If so what was your cost vs sell? Also how much time (days) as well as actual build time did you have in the project? Great vid, subscribed today and will be checking out more videos as well. Thank you for your time and response.

      Hey Brandon! Thanks so much for the comment and the kind words. There’s definitely a ton of great content on this platform to learn from. I didn’t sell these tables as they were built for my house. And I worked on them sporadically for like 8 months so I’m not sure how long they took. The Domino version is much quicker than the mortise and tenon and that BASE could easily be done in less than a day. To build the forms and pour the concrete is probably another day.
