    Thank you for this video. I was wondering if it was possible to work as a psychotherapist after studying a masters in clinical psychology

    • @philsguidetopsyd
      @philsguidetopsyd  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! Masters degrees usually set students up for licensure, if a masters program does that, then that’s perfect. Whether LPCC, LPC, LCSW, or other licensures will allow someone to do psychotherapy. I think there may be some certifications that teach things like CBT but I’m not sure if that person can call themselves a therapist, there’s certain restrictions and guidelines based on state laws that make that tricky. But to answer your question, if a masters in clinical psychology prepares students for licensure or some sort of national certification then yes they could work as psychotherapist after obtaining the graduate degree.

    Do you recommend a master degree in clinical mental health counseling before going into a PhD in Clinical psychology?

    • @philsguidetopsyd
      @philsguidetopsyd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kyra, it probably wouldn't hurt, and it more so depends if someone thinks they need it to get accepted into a PhD program. But it's a great option (less debt if you decide you don't need the PhD, plenty of jobs, and good for if you just want to do therapy). But there are many people who to save time/money skip the masters degree and apply to PhD programs and see if they can get in, then if they don't get in start looking into masters. Hope that helps!

    Please what's the difference between Msc psychology and Msc clinical psychology?

    • @philsguidetopsyd
      @philsguidetopsyd  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It really depends on the program. “Clinical” typically refers to some form of therapy. A program that is just a masters in psychology could be more so related to research. It’s usually best to reach out to the school just to make sure!

    I can’t decide between clinical psychology or psychiatry. I have my BA in psychology and I have not taken any med school prerequisites for psychiatry.
    The difference in pay is my main dilemma. How profitable is clinical psychology really? I live in Washington state and the pay seems dismal in comparison…
    I just can’t decide if it’s worth sticking w/ clinical psychology bc I already have my BA or if I should “restart” for psychiatry

    • @markcruz9315
      @markcruz9315 ปีที่แล้ว

      My long term goal is to have a yearly profit of 200k. I’m afraid of committing to psychology because working up to that amount seems like it would (at least) take the same amount of time it would for me to become a psychiatrist

    • @philsguidetopsyd
      @philsguidetopsyd  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I hear where you're coming from, I had to choose between med school and clinical psychology and I made the decision to choose psyd because of my belief and value in therapy for patients. I know that as a psychiatrist they do therapy too, but it's a small percentage and the training looks different than it does compared to clinical psychology. If you love what you do the pay is just a bonus is what a mentor has always told me!
      I will say there are plenty of opportunities to make a diverse array of income as a clinical psychologist-private practice is probably the best way to build income from multiple streams (selling courses, speaking at events, research, teaching, consulting, or even social media etc.) and there are some mid-level psychology positions whether tenured at a university or working in a VA who have very competitive salaries comparable to physicians. It just depends on what you value more. Best of luck!

    • @philsguidetopsyd
      @philsguidetopsyd  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sure, it really depends on what your goals are! I'd suggest joining a psychology club, shadowing some psychologists, getting good grades and research experience and maybe looking through a few grad programs that you might find an interest in. Best of luck!

    hey i subscribed to your videos they have given me a good understanding on what career field im interested in. Im currently going back to school majoring in psychology but the career field im interested becoming a pediatric neuropsychologist would I need to do clinical psychology program or the neuropsychology program ?

    • @philsguidetopsyd
      @philsguidetopsyd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! Both programs will get you to the same destination. A lot of clinical psychology programs have neuro tracks in their program that provide different practicum, research, or courses that allow students to prepare for neuro internships. But even if a PsyD program doesn't have those things, it's possible to become a clinical psychologist first and then get the necessary experiences to apply for neuropsychology board certification.

    quick question: i am a medical doctor with a 2 year working experience and i would want to branch into clinical psychology ,what steps do i have to take?

    • @philsguidetopsyd
      @philsguidetopsyd  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is a great but tough question! I guess it depends on what your goals are and how long you would want to go back to school. I've heard of people getting a psychiatric residency to help them become more acquainted to the field of therapy, medication, and psych assessments since they already have an M.D. That might be the fastest path. The other path might be just getting a masters in clinical psychology so that you can do therapy with clients. With your education I'm not sure if you would necessarily have to get a PhD/PsyD in clinical psychology and go back to school for 4-6 more years, but I could be wrong. Hope that helps!

    • @philsguidetopsyd
      @philsguidetopsyd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s totally up to you! Some people feel ready to jump in and some people like to get some experience first. Depends on the time and money as well as if the country you live in requires a masters before the PhD.

    • @sophie7571

    hi!! Sooo im ready to pick my fields in psych, wondering if I should go with Clinical or child and adolescence? Whats the difference? Why shud I pick clinical over child?

    • @philsguidetopsyd
      @philsguidetopsyd  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, great question. Depending on the school you pick or the program, you may choose what interests you the most. Do you want to work with just children? Do you want to work with a general population? Being a clinical psychologist you can work with all populations, if you choose to focus on child and adolescence it's just a specialty and focus that you may specialize in that population. So it's up to you on what you prefer to choose. A child psychologist or clinical psychologist are the same profession but work with different populations and there are many people who become general clinical psychologists and specialize later on in their career so it just depends on the path and how they get there.
