3:58 That cadence of the chime followed by the "Greater Than or Less Than, Level 1" chant has been stuck indelibly in my brain since childhood, and pops in there randomly every now and again. Just did, actually, which is why I searched for this video. The demo song from my Yamaha keyboard has the same effect.

That was my first replay button as a kid. My cousin had a Speak n Math and I would press that button like 20 times before actually playing it.

yours too? mine was always the number stumper intro, which I always thought was fun to play over and over until it drove Mom crazy and she finally had to tell me to stop. Then after I listened to her play that very game, and she later taught me how to play it myself, it became one of my favorites.

There's a story behind the "greater than less than" sample from TI employee Nick Hulbert "We had recorded and digitized all of the speech words and phrases that would be used in the Speak & Math and working the late shift getting ready for a demonstration the next morning. There were three of us working the final digitized "tweaking" when we realized that one of the phrases was missing from the collection. The phrase was " is greater than or less than". TI was using the professional voice of a radio announcer out of the Dallas area and we were in Lubbock. We knew that we couldn't load the Speak & Math simulator ( no actual unit yet) without the full collection as each word and phrase had a unique address. So we quickly fired up the sound room and recorded and digitized that phrase using the lowest frequency voice of the three of us. We added it to the simulator thinking it would suffice for the demonstration and we could capture the actual voice at a later date. It turns out that the next day while we were sleeping, the demonstration was conducted, the quality control group evaluated the words and approved the voice library. Our co worker Doug Wickey ended up being the voice for the Speak & Math for that one phrase "is greater than or less than". If you have a unit try playing that game and you'll definitely notice a different voice for that one phrase. Don't know how the quality folks missed it but then no one ever complained. Strange that they didn't notice and I hear the difference as plain as day. Doug's voice is not as deep and his diction is much different."

I got emotional when i heard em start it up and it played that opening tune. I had this EXACT SAME ONE. i was about 3 or 4 years old mashing buttons. I havent seen it since, till today. I got all misty eyes like a wuss. I remember it sounding low and scarey when the battery was low, then to high pitch crackling sounds when the batter is damn near dead. Eventually the screen broke and when i played it the sound worked but i get all kinds of weird shapes on the screen. It looked like predator numbers. i thought id look it up, but i wasnt ready to hear the sounds. I forgot about it and when it sounded off, i went back, waay back. Thank you for a trip down memory lane and reminding me of how old i am. If anyone bother to read this and you are real young. My message is to you. Cherish your time as a child, cause in a flash youll be like me. This is awesome. This video made my fuckin day.

I had one of these for years that I got for Christmas when I was about 5 or 6, that I kept into my adulthood. I wanted to pass it down to my own daughter, along with my Speak N Spell, but found that when I put batteries in them to test them out, they unfortunately both stopped working, which was really disappointing.

As a huge deadmau5 fan and someone who owned this toy, I NEVER noticed that. I was thinking about how this sounds like a lot of his vocal samples like in sometimes things get whatever, and was thinking I might one day sample this toy myself but apparently it's been done! Cool info!
