The only complaint I have about the Haikyu community is that EVERYONE freaks out about Tsukki in Season 1 and you hear too much "just wait", or "I love Tsukkis journey" like shut the fuck up, it's so much better when it comes out of left field and is a huge surprise. I remember hating him so much compared to the rest of the team and this episode was a GIANT turn for me, but they've already been softening you up for a whole season saying "he's my favorite" "give him a chance" like bro you guys ruined a giant mood swing that could have been way more fun to watch. Stop ruining reaction channels. Other than that the Haikyuu fans are the best. 🧡

I understand you point, I might even agree a little bit, but your aggressiveness is kinda throwing me off a bit. I'd say lets keep it respectful between haikyuu lovers, no need to cuss at eachother.
This legend community is still small, so it'll hit a lot more "directly" between us. Please, lets keep it nice and loving while we still can "control" the community. We're gonna be the same throughout for a while, so lets get along? Love that you engange, and I'll defend your right to give your opinion all the way. But, just, keep things civilized.

The really sad part is that Tsukki's brother is actually a very good player, being the ace of a middle school team and shown when he's able to receive the ball straight into the basketball hoop. The Karasuno roster at that time was just so deep that even someone as skilled and passionate as him was relegated to not even suiting up during games, essentially relegated to practice squad.
Tsukki's attitude of "if I don't really invest in it, I don't have to worry about being devastated if it doesn't work out" is pretty common, and a bit relatable. If I tell myself I wasn't that serious about it in the first place, failure has a much smaller impact.

Tsukki's got a classic fear of failure.
If he tries his hardest and fails, well he's seen how that ate up his brother. And he lied to his face to protect his pride. It completely shattered the idolized vision he had of his brother.
But hey, if I'm just playing in a silly school club and I fail, well no harm no fowl. I wasnt that invested anyways.

One thing is that Tsukki's brother was on the team and tried his very best to become a regular - just for all of his hard work amounting to nothing, not only because there was so many better players than him, but also because (and I think that's the reason Tsukki has such distain and complex towards Hinata) it was the time for the Little Giant - a player who should've been inferior to Tsukki's brother, and yet was the most remarkable player among the team. So Hinata makes it a painful analogy of a path Tsukki doesn't want to experience, and honestly, I understand that. Why trying, if this one passionate guy will win in the long run anyway? 🏐🖤

  • @amyjohnson3776
    @amyjohnson3776 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +74

The "Other due" is Akaashi, the setter from Fukurodani, so he is Bokuto's setter. Yamaguchi is the only one who could have approached Tsukki about this because he was there when it all went down. While it didn't hit Yamaguchi in the same way, he would have seen the changes in Tsukki after seeing his older brother in the stands. (BTW Tsukki's brother was part of the team but because it was so big he couldn't even make it on the bench. A lot of the people behind the banner are teammates that are in the reserve but aren't on the bench. So he wasn't lying about practicing and all his hard work, it just didn't pay off in his 3 years on the team. His "pointless lies" were all about all the games he said he played.) I also love that you see just why Yamaguchi is friends with Tsukki when he can be such a sassy butt, that sassy butt saved his butt lol. This is such a pivotal episode for Tsukki appreciation, we see so much into his character. I love that Bokuto (and Kuroo and Akaashi to some extent) doesn't sugar coat things for Tsukki. They are very straight with him which I think is the best way to get through to Tsukki. He very much deals with black and white thinking and that is how Bokuto talks to him in that scene. He presents it in a way, this is how it is and this is what can happen to you. There is emotion but it isn't emotional thinking, it that makes sense. Bokuto lays it out, he had a moment and that was what hooked him to volleyball. It also wasn't a moment tied to anyone else, which I think is the piece Tsukki was missing before. It isn't about being "the best" it is about having a way to effectively fight no matter if there is someone better.
Bokuto (and Akaashi) are my favorite non Karasuno players (there are so many characters you can't pit them all against each other it is easier if you can have catagories lol) and this is the episode that made it happen. I think this is my favorite episode because it showcases my 2 favorites in the development of until this point was my least favorite character. I always hated Tsukki until I understood him.
I love your new watching buddy, I keep forgetting to tell you that. It truly puts a smile on my face!

    The worried little "where's Bokuto?" @ 3:22.
I'd never fully thought about it until you pointed it out, but at that moment when Tsuki starts to block Bokuto seriously, his hand is taking up the whole of the screen; it's another sign, apart from the harsh lines, of how completely dominant he is at that moment!

This is one of my favorite episodes in Haikyuu - not only because of Tsukki's growth but also because of Yamaguchi. Yamaguchi was always seen as Tsukki's sidekick. Someone stuck in a relationship that was not balanced. But this episode revealed that Yamaguchi and Tsukki have a nice bond - they were friends for years and know each other's struggles and insecurities. Yamaguchi knew Tsukki was struggling, but respected him enough to not interfere until he deemed it necessary. And the way Tsukki reacted to the confrontation? He respected Yamaguchi's opinion, he listened to him and his words motivated him to go ask more questions and look for guidance from Kuroo, Bokuto, and Akaashi. You are very observant so I'm sure you will notice small details in this show regarding Tsukki and Yamaguchi relationship and respect they have for each other - those might be small gestures but oh, it is so lovely to notice them :)

  • @ZyxiaYrah
    @ZyxiaYrah 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +16

I can just imagine Tsukki still thinking of his brother and the Little Giant, arriving in Karasuno and seeing short, loud tangerine who loudly proclaims he wants to be the ace. It must have been a cruel irony to him, like the past repeating itself. His brother never became better than the Little Giant, so how can he be better than Hinata, the next little giant? I'd be extra pissed and conflicted too, TF. It sounds like the universe wanted to play a joke on him. He's not even a top 5 favorite of mine, but I have so much empathy for him.
Also, slight tangent; I love how the stage play adapted this storyline, especially the "what do you need other than pride?" It was so emotional and dramatic, it's so good.
I also notice a lot of people being a little bit surprised that Tsukki speaks respectfully towards Kuroo, Bokuto and Akaashi. It's understandable because he's a brat. I don't know if this has been brought up before, but I want to point out that although his words are sassy, he does follow the hierarchy. He speaks formally towards his upperclassmen. He even uses a softer (?) pronoun to refer to himself (Boku). For example, even Suga and Kenma, who are polite and quiet respectively, use rougher language to refer to themselves (Ore) compared to Tsukki. So basically, he's a brat with manners. That's why Tanaka calls him cheeky all the time.

What Bokuto said to tsukki is the same that Simada-san said to Yamaguchi on season one when he asked Yamaguchi if he enjoyed the match versus aoba johsai and he said no. Shimada- san said that Ukai coach told them "You have to be good to enjoy sports" . For Bokuto that means that you can have your moment and you'll be hooked into volleyball but first you have to train and search that moment. I mean, what a beautiful writting!!

    Haikyuu Day!
Bokuto deserves so much credit for his speech, and I rarely see people acknowledge that. Tsukki had no cheeky comments and was engaged in the convo (something we've almost never seen- he's always in the back, bad body language) shows me how muc Bokuto's honest/blunt feelings deeply affect him. He's already acting/playing differently by the next day's practice.
IIRC Fukurodani means Owls so Bokuto is physically embodiment of that.

In my opinion, Tsuki's story and the fact that his progression was soooo sooo slow before, if any at all,and then...click- let's move, asking ppl for advice, trying more etc all happening so fast is a perfect example of smn who has a mind block, once that is gone then everything moves rapidly. The sassiness doesnt go away though...it's a permanent delight!hahahahah

it really puts tsukishima's aversion to hard work into perspective, as well as his dislike of hinata. his brother worked hard and did everything right, even down to the meals he ate, but it still wasn't enough to succeed. and with hinata, his brother was completely outshone by the previous little giant, so he's completely convinced himself that history is just gonna repeat between him and hinata.
unrelated but "is volleyball fun" "not really" "maybe that's because you suck" is one of my favorite exchanges in the show

    Great episode!
Just wanted to clarify something. When Tsukki said ""We don't have to stop it?" he wasn't actually asking for guidance, it was something better.
Ukai was saying "Ok, we can't just kill block Bokuto, let's try to soft block so we don't end up just getting straight up scored", so Tsukki said something like "What you mean we can't stop it? What if I can?" so he was showing that he actually wanted to kill block Bokuto, and was asking for permission to do so

The guy on the left is the Fukurodani Setter, he is the guy who doesnt look in Bokuto commercial break. He plays a straight man for him :D
Love the understanding of Tsukki's arc. To clarify - his brother was on the team but he was so weak compared to the dozens of other players, he didnt even make the bench. Kinda like the guys who made fun of Hinata in episode 1 and Kageyama told them to shut up and stop riding coattails of better players.
I absolutely love the thing Bokuto tells Tsukki. Its so beautiful and true - for every sport. I still remember the first time when I had my moment in basketball - I was dribbling with game on the line and three people were coming to cut me off, and my body just pulled up and sunk the cleanest midrange shot I have ever sent. I didnt even realize that I shot the ball until after it went through, it happened on pure instinct - I get chills recalling it now and its been ten years.
I wouldnt say Tsukki is asking for guidance. He is like "So we dont have to play full gas?" :D - I also would say he didnt exactly fully buy in, he is just willing to try being serious now. :P
Also about Tsukki's brother - the reason he lied is cuz he is the "illusionary hero", he didnt want to let Tsukki down cuz he idolized him so much, but he just wasnt as cracked as he was in Tsukki's head.

He was on the team, but at the time, it was such a competitive school, with so many great players, he wasn't even on the bench, even though he was working hard. When Kei asked him if he was the same position as in middle school, while Kei was talking about being the ace, the brother was thinking more of 'middle blocker' or 'wing spiker', so he agreed, but when Kei assumed he meant "ace" I think he didn't have the heart to disappoint his younger brother, and started lying to him. I'm sure he didn't want to lie, but it just happened, not realizing how much it would affect Kei.

for Tsukki's internal monologue there is small translation mistake.
instead of "it was everything to my brother", he said "I thought it was everything to my brother and made him tell pointless lie"
from this I think Tsukki actually partly blames himself for his brother's lie, for looking up so much to him etc.

Tsukki will forever be a little brat lol I think you got it right, his brother lying to him and seeing how much it destroyed him to have his little brother see through his facade (last episode when tsukki saw him destroy his room) got him to the point to not let things matter so much to get to that point of hurt and despair but still hating to loose. Yamaguchi's speech always gives me chills.

The part where tsukkie says, “it was everything for my brother” right before Yamaguchi come, the actual translation is “it was just a club, but I saw it as everything of what my brother is” and then he goes “which ended up making him lie “. (my English isn’t perfect sorry)

I absolutely love Bokuto's point in this episode; it's applicable to SOOOO many things in life. You can't have fun until you're good at something. When you're new you're always constrained by your own skill, your understanding, your practice. You dont know what to do in different situations. You lose and dont know why. But when you actually get good enough at something you can finally have fun because you can think things and make them real.

13:38 Tsukki's brother was on the team, but was not a regular. This was the strongest team in Karasuno's recent history (or ever), the team with Little Giant and the only team that made it to Nationals, so they got a lot of strong players. Remember how Tsukki's brother was the ace on his middle school team. He couldn't even crack the regular team at Karasuno. That's how strong this team was. As you already know, there can only be 12 players on the floor. The rest of the team would have to be up in the bleachers. That's where Tsukki's brother is right now. He went to practice every day and practiced very hard. He just wasn't good enough to make the starting rotation, unfortunately. The pressure of his little brother idolizing him was what made him lie. And that's what made Tsukki not want to try hard. It's like a defense mechanism for him.

I've had moments like those where you're just hooked on a sport after it. One of them was really a crossover between two. I was playing a cricket game and a catch came to me up high, I jumped for it but only got the top of my fingers to it. Instinctively from my volleyball I was playing as well, I spun in the air, landed on the ground already starting a dive and made a diving catch behind me after slowing it down from the initial touch. That's only 1 of many moments from many sports, but right then, even though it was during cricket I loved volleyball even more.... and it increased my love of cricket at the time too. I couldn't get enough of either wanting to repeat moments like that for both sports.

Haven’t even watched it yet but your fishing hat in the back is cracking me up.
    Okay I watched.
Everyone has already said all my thoughts about this episode for me but goddamn. This will always be my most painful and probably favorite episode ever. I was different in that I loved Tsukki from the moment he was introduced but I still greatly appreciated seeing his growth, cause he obviously has some things to work through. It’s interesting to see your reaction to his story from an older brother perspective cause I see it from a youngest sibling perspective myself. The age gap is very similar between my siblings and I and imagining a situation like this knowing how much I looked up to them would have absolutely crushed me forever. It really shows just how much Tsukki does like volleyball if he continues to play even after this betrayal. I like to think Yamaguchi had a big part in that over the years. Thank god for Yams.

Its a sad story and it makes perfect sense, but it also amuses me that his trauma has to be volleyball related XD

Yay, we made it to this episode! I find that I end up relating to Yamaguchi here, especially in the flashbacks. I think I tend to be pretty harsh with myself in terms of my abilities, and look up to people who have a lot of natural talent, skill, and confidence. There's admiration but also some jealousy too, but I prefer to at least be able to be friends with the person I see as better, to be close to them and try to be better because they inspire me. That's how I read Yamaguchi seeking out Tsukki's friendship, even if he's worried that Tsukki called him "lame" along with his bullies, if he can be like Tsukki, then maybe he can become cool and confident too. And so I love the moment in this episode where Yamaguchi calls Tsukki out, it just feels so powerful and his words really hit home for me.
I understand Tsukki's thinking, that there's always going to be someone better, so why bother trying at all? I can get trapped in that kind of defeated thought cycle, but if I catch myself in it, I just think back to Yamaguchi asking "what more do you need than pride?" and it helps me through. And just as a character growth moment for him too, it's so good. Yamaguchi is always saying "sorry, Tsukki!" so it must have been hard for him to tell Tsukki that he's in the wrong for not even trying. I appreciate that Tsukki doesn't get mad, but realizes that the kid who's always been following him around has surpassed him, that he's matured past him, and that makes him cool in his eyes.
Oh also, I think something interesting to point out is that, despite Tsukki's lack of effort in the team, his attitude that it's "just a club", and the traumatic experience he had when he realized his brother had lied to him... he still chose to go to the same school as his brother, to join the same club as his brother...
Hinata and Tsukki really are like the sun and the moon. Hinata is passionate and moves on instinct, he does and says what he feels without putting much thought into it. Tsukki is all intellect, he's always thinking and calculating, and barely anything he does is based in heated emotion. So I think maybe Tsukki has trouble accessing his emotions, even when they do inform his decisions and actions. He doesn't try hard at volleyball because he calculated that the potential gains aren't worth the effort, but actually it's because of the hurt he felt at his brother's betrayal that he holds back, believing that him trying so hard and failing led to the lies (personally I think it was because his brother was disappointed that he wasn't on the team, but at home with Tsukki he could at least pretend, that at least someone saw him as amazing). So I think Tsukki's decision to follow in his brother's footsteps says a lot about how he actually feels about the sport and the team. I don't think he hates volleyball, but I do think maybe he resents it for taking away his hero.

My take on this is Akiteru (Kei's brother) was on the team, but not ON the roster because the school was using a caste system in picking their current roster. Remember, at that point Karasuno was a powerhouse- meaning everyone's gonna want to join their Volleyball club. Plus, the team was at its strongest when the Little Giant was playing. Also, this team was also under Grandpa Ukai's coaching, meaning it probably has strict rules (if you remember, even third-year Ukai (current coach) was not even a regular if I remember correctly).

"It's just a club" in Japanese was "Tadano bukatsu". Tadanobu is a Japanese name, Katsu is often used as a name too, hence the joke "Whoah, that sounds like a name".
Don't worry if you don't get it, the joke went over my head too before I started to work on my Japanese 😂
Hinata never hates anyone, true. He actually knows what to say to each person and when to not to say anything. That's why he made so much friends along the way.

As a GoT fan, I really appreciate that you said Tsukki still said and did some things you didn't like, even though you felt bad for him. Some people tend to excuse what the character did because of their sad backstory. Having a sad backstory is explanation, but not an excuse. (GoT have many characters with sad backstory, even its greatest villains. And some characters went through the same situations, but reacted differently. Their reaction to what happened to them is sometimes what differentiates the good guy from the bad guy.)
I felt the same with Kageyama in the earlier part of the show, but they showed him starting to change after realising his mistakes, so I ended up liking him sooner. Tsukki (and Oikawa) took a bit longer for me, but baby steps, lol! A change in perspective can spark a change in Tsukki's attitude, and a change in attitude can change his actions. Tsukki is the slowest burn to ever burn, lol!
I honestly felt bad for Akiteru. He worked so hard until his 3rd year, hoping that he would have a chance to play, but it didn't happen. And he probably cried not just out of frustration but also out of shame because Tsukki caught his lies. He is Tsukki's first heartbreak.
At first, I thought Tsukki hated Hinata and Kageyama because he saw his brother in them, how passionate they are when it comes to volleyball. But later, I thought he also saw himself in his brother and the Little Giant in Hinata. He probably thought no matter how hard his brother practiced, he was no match to the Little Giant. So it's useless to put more effort into volleyball since he won't be good enough to beat Hinata anyway.
But now, I also think maybe it's not that Tsukki's brother is not good enough, but he was just in the wrong place. I read a comment before that maybe if Akiteru went to Shiratorizawa, he could have had a higher chance of becoming a regular player. Shiratorizawa is a school that values height and power. His brother is an ace spiker in middle school, and he is very tall. Just like Kageyama would not have become the player that he is now if he went to Aoba Johsai, maybe his brother was also in the wrong environment. Maybe Karasuno was just not the right school for him to thrive.
And YES! Hinata does not have a hater bone in his body. He's very empathetic. He's the purest little angel, he's the sweetest cinnamon roll, he's the goodest of the good bois! 😂😂😂 (That's why I hate it when Tsukki is mean to him.)
Also, baby Bokuto is a very mischievous baby. If Mama is distracted, he will get himself into trouble. That's why he fell down the back, because mama is not paying attention, lol!

Okay, so right in volleyball you can have six players on the court and six players on the bench at any given time? So Karasuno, at that time, had such a large team- such a large roster- that Akiteru (Kei's brother) couldn't even make it onto the bench. It's kinda sad. But yeah, the players who don't make the bench would sit up in the stands with the cheering section.
Edit: also, I feel like I should clarify a little thing about Kuroo's name. In Japanese, a double vowel means an extended vowel, rather than shifting the sound like in English. So his name is pronounced Kuro-o, rather than with an oo like in zoo. English doesn't generally have vowel length distinctions like this, but it's what makes Japanese sound how it does.

21:06 ''he's being so respectful right now''.
So about that, one of the things i find very funny about his character us that he is always polite ! Gramatically speaking Tsukki uses what is called Keigo which is japanese polite forms. He always uses the long form of the verbs (more polite) always uses desu and i can give you many examples of that. Which is why it's funny as hell that he is sooo sassy because the way he speaks doesn't match what he actually says. So bro is saying the rudest things in the nicest forms and it gives eveyone a whiplash.
Hinata is the opposite. Keigo ? He doesn't know her. He doesn't use any form of grammatical politness but he is always saying the nicest things.
21:20 ''who's this guy on the left'' how dare you that is my baby😂😂Akaashi Keiji, he is the setter of Fukurodani and we say him in previous episode. He's the one throwing funny comments whenever Bokuto does anyhting.
21:42 i felt like you were do confused about this joke which is normal because it doesn't actually translate to english well. So there are two ways to say ''just a club''. You can say ''tada no bukatsu'' or you can say ''taka ga bukatsu''. Tsuki uses the second one but Bokuto hears the first one. The first one kind of sounds like a name because ''Tadanobu'' is an actual name and ''katsu'' can be a last name. But kuroo jumps in with ''you're wrong he said Taka ga Bukatsu''.
''Shut this annyoying owl'' i mean he does look like an Owl but the joke is also that Fukurodani has the kanji for Fukuro which Owl in japanese. Not only that but his name is written with the kanji for Mimizuki which is Horned Owl, hence the character design. I think Akaashi's name is based on the rufous legged owl.
Haikyuu has a lot of teams based on animals. Karasuno (crows), Nekoma (cats), Fukurodani (Owl). Shiratorizawa (Swan) You'll meet others along the line too.

Yeah, that bit where Bokuto and Kuroo talk about "just a club" sounding like a name is super lost in translation, because it's based on a pun. But even considering that the translation is just confusing, like how does "just a club" become "Mary Club?" But crappy translation is nothing new for the Crunchyroll subtitles. So let me explain the joke. Won't make it funny, but at least maybe less confusing! What Tsukki says is たかが部活, "takaga bukatsu," just a club activity. But what Bokuto says in response is ただの部活, "tada no bukatsu," which means the same thing but with maybe a slightly different nuance. And then he thinks that sounds like a person's name, Kuroo piping in with "like Tada Nobukatsu?" which does indeed sound like a name. But of course that's not what Tsukki actually says so they're disappointed that there wasn't a pun after all.
What's truly tragic about how untranslatable this joke is that it's actually referenced much later and it's really funny if you get it, but most won't.
