    I was one of the QA Leads for this game when we took this over at THQ. It was one of my shortest projects, but i just remember having so much fun with it. I couldn't believe how bad it was when we first got it. The dev team did an amazing job at fixing it up in such a short period of time. It's also a shame it didn't release with it's original soundtrack.

      I agree. While Juiced 2 had a great car list, good customization and I liked the story premise, even if it became a dull grind, the wonky "super-arcade" physics became a huge detriment once you got into League 3 cars. NFS, MC and SRS all had better arcade physics. Sure the graphics were better in 2 and even hold up pretty well today, but it was also a PS3 v PS2 release. Juiced 1 looks on par with its contemporary counterparts. In addition, many of the tracks in Juiced 2 were down right stupid, giving a "Monday, Monday, Monday" monster trucks vibe the entire time, not something I think was even popular in 2007. The DNA thing was cool, but no matter how I drove, it always looked the same. For all it's faults, Juiced 1 still had a better car list and variety than any NFS offering at the time and had many features that other games just weren't offering.

    Ride height actually did affect handling, specifically travel/compliance. While it's not very noticeable on FWD and AWD cars, it can make a world of difference on RWD cars, especially on bumpy sweepers. While how low you could get away with and still be driveable varied by car, it's generally a good idea to keep the slider out of the lowest 4th or 5th of its range...

    • @mattizie91
      @mattizie91 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Not just ride height, but the bodykit and specifically spoilers make a HUGE difference. It's even possible to set up cars that you can actually CONTROL and counter steer to recover from slides/drifts by purposefully removing the rear wing altogether. Do that and all of a sudden if you enter the corner right, you can sail through it with little to no steering input in a constant slide. Getting it right is the most rewarding feeling from any racing game I've ever played.

    • @TheSilverShadow17
      @TheSilverShadow17 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mattizie91That's not how downforce physics work, you can't expect to enter corners at fast speed without a form of load on the rear wheels on RWD cars especially aerodynamic load

    Man I loved this as a kid. Never actually managed to complete it either, just spent probably over a hundred hours in the campaign gaining and losing rep without real progress, but the racing was fun.
    I even managed to lose so many vipers in pink slip races (thanks to them spinning out so easily) that apparently I maxed out some sort of internal counter and the car dealer no longer had any vipers to sell. Which is basically when I stopped playing because everything was a class 1 race and other cars weren't really viable.
    I should really get around to replaying this at some point.

    This is one of the best videos I've seen covering Juiced. I wanted to add a few notes to some topics you covered:
    3:27 Juiced is still playable online today with an edit to the game's .exe. I made a tool called Juiced Editor that can patch online play in with a few clicks. You can do crew races, showoffs, and even pink slips against other players. Admittedly the game's community is dormant at the moment, but occasionally we get together and host some events.
    4:38 An additional fun fact on top of that: some of the race routes on the world map don't actually match the in-game routes, most notably with West Anderson.
    27:24 You can skip these pink slips by accepting their offer, and backing out at the screen right before the Mustang loading screen (the one with the six grid spots). You won't lose your car or any respect - all that happens is that the race is recorded as a loss in your stats, which most people will overlook anyways.
    I've also experimented with an .exe patch that disables the pink slip calls entirely, which I'll implement into a future version of Juiced Editor if things work out.
    28:21 This sounds like you rejected a host challenge from Carlos, and not a pink slip. Rejecting a host challenge will always cut your respect down to below the host privilege threshold (around 8-900), so I'm assuming you had about 1,2-1,300 respect at the time. Carlos does not penalize you for rejecting pink slips more than any other rival.
    28:41 You can skip days in the calendar if you want to cycle to a certain event. The button for it is shown at the bottom.
    29:06 Showoffs actually have more complexity than you might have realized. There's an assortment of combo moves in the game that encourage you to string certain combinations of tricks with huge point bonuses. (You can perform a Ding Dong with a bootleg turn + 180 + J-turn + bootleg turn, for example.) Good showoff scores incorporating these can go well beyond 1,000,000 points.
    ...but I can't blame you for not catching on to these, because the game never tells you what combinations there are - not even in the tutorial. The only way you can find them besides rigorous trial and error is in the instruction manual in re-releases of the game. Showoffs can be a ton of fun, but Juice Games did a terrible job communicating one of the core facets of them.
    I'm glad you enjoyed going through Juiced, and thankful for making such a good retrospective on your experience with it. It's inspired me to get back into the game and resume some old modding projects. Keep up the great work!

      Thank you for this comment man. I've seen videos pop up here and there of people having r34 drift battles from like 3 or 4 years ago then the videos vanished. Was wondering how people were still accessing the online mode of this game but that makes a lot of sense to me now. It's sad how little information is provided in a video format for this game period. But it's an aged racing game at this point. Just happy there's still people enjoying this game even if it's a small crowd. I'll come back to the game every year or two and still have a blast with the driving mechanics. I loved the punishing nature of this game cause it made you feel unstoppable when you go on a pink slip streak only to take one corner bad and lose your most loved car. Such a slept on game.

    Imo Juiced hands down has the best career mode out of all the "tuner" racing games from that era. The way events are spread throughout the calendar, the respect and betting mechanics make up for a much more immersive and exciting feel than any other game. The lack of a "restart" option contrary to most ppls expectations is also an amazing quirk is yet another thing that skyrockets the fun factor of this title.

    Every so often I replay Juiced, and my newest finished playthrough aligns with your thoughts pretty well. I honestly think that a reimagining of Juiced's core concepts, brought with modern sensibilities and features, could leave a mark in the arcade-ish racing scene.
    My recurring complaints stem from the car handling dynamics, limited tuning and upgrading, and lack of variety in race events. Most every car requires max length gear ratios from the garage, because there's basically no other way to increase speed. Muscle cars on longer drag races get absolutely smoked by 6-speed, or even 5-speed shoeboxes. Auto transmission feels pretty awful to manage, what with massive torque losses according to the dyno, but remapping on PC is... troublesome. Then, you have a very limited variety of race layouts, only bolstered by car classes, reverse routes and maybe going in team races vs. solo.
    But I always come back to the game. It offers a more challenging, more punishing experience that has you interact with basically every system in the game, from class-specific rides to even side-bets and pink slips. Cross-crew respect gains and losses are a terrific idea, and I feel quite silly for only appreciating it after nearly 18 years instead.
    Understandably this wasn't possible at the time, from hardware limitations to budget restrictions. But if, pray tell, Juiced had a second chance at life... I'd love to see rival crews be expanded upon. Each of them have distinct liveries, interests and respect ranges. These can be bolstered by more on-screen presence of not just the crew leaders, but also of the regular members and racers. Race intros can have special cinematics depending on the team hosting the events, through a combination of flares, flags, various party accessories, people gathering around cars and performing tricks, and just the attitudes of the "main crews" and how they present themselves to the players. I recently imagine Public Chaos and Vixens as partygoers, while Wild Cats are no-nonsense racers who always stick together.
    Pushing the concept even further, how about cross-region races? It's odd how, in practice, Omega Tau and Legion share a fair chunk of races and territory in practice with no gameplay consequences. Maybe some higher-stakes races can cover two or more regions, with the participating crews being at the forefront of the race in terms of battling each other, or even in the cinematics. Maybe even have it such that the "influence" of each crew grows or diminishes based on inter-crew relationships, which get strained based on actions in a race, and especially by the results or simple existence of cross-region races. These also tackle the storyline aspect, creating a semi-randomized story where you might get a bigger focus from several crews, which always differ per playthrough, if not are influenced by the player themselves.
    Then there's the natural inclusion of traffic in higher-stakes races, a freeroam mode with roaming racers... In fact, I sometimes think how nice cruising through an opened up Angel City could be like. The game already links some regions together with modelled streets and layouts between certain races; filling in more of the space with roads and simply interesting places can do wonders.
    Juiced, I feel, deserves to be remembered and even applauded for daring to push the envelope. Modern racing games still can't quite match the stakes provided in a 2005 title. The potential for organic "storytelling" in a grounded, accessible yet challenging street racing game is through the roof. Heck, NFS can learn some lessons from Juiced - even if, 18 years ago, Juiced played second fiddle to NFS in the eyes of the public.

    A Geforce 6600GT, Athlon 64 3400+, 2005 around the corner, what a time to be alive, Of course i had a Sempron, FX 5200 and optimism, but something that new games miss and Juiced is a prime example of, is how good music choice can turn 20 minutes into 2 hours, even if the game is mediocre, good music carried the cash in titles from this era, its amazing that we almost never saw this game but i'm glad we did as it was one of the few games to focus on the UK car scene whereas the rest were clearly western driven titles. I think if it were to come back, rather than try to claw at the past, focusing on the Cash days scene, betting, slips, raw street touge and grudge racing would go straight in line with the phone calls and unique little bits of this game and if it had extensive customisation to allow for flexibility in tastes like Juiced and UG2, people could still live the old game through a successor done right, the outrageous kits, wraps, silly tints, vents and neons of the import craze.

    Well, Juiced was one of the first racing games I ever bought, so nostalgia from this video hits me really hard (even though I still play it from time to time).
    As for the topics you cover, there's stuff I'd like to address, so get ready for a long ride:
    0:30 I can agree that the delay caused by the THQ takeover ruined the timing of the game's release, but honestly, had Acclaim managed to release it before going bust, it wouldn't have been nearly half as good as it turned out to be in the end (I still can't forget the cringy intro from the Acclaim version 🤮).
    3:05 Oh, you bet I did watch that ad on YT years ago, it was hilarious 😂
    3:37 The online multiplayer holds on to this day (with some workarounds regarding GameSpy, but still) and being able to bring your singleplayer career cars to online races was a great concept 🤩
    3:58 In my early years spent with this game, I didn't care much about the Arcade mode, I always chose to use the Unlock All cheat code to access all cars and tracks in the Custom Race mode. It wasn't until recently that I learned there were features that required you to complete 100% of both Arcade and Career, regardless of whether the code was used or not.
    7:29 I wouldn't classify Juiced as an arcade, it's definitely more of an early simcade. Juiced 2 on the other hand, is way more arcade (kinda like the situation with Project Cars, but the jump towards arcade doesn't hurt as much).
    8:00 As I've played Juiced on a keyboard most of the time, I found stuff like throttle management pretty much impossible to do. The only way to somehow control the RWD cars was to turn down the steering sensitivity. However, once I got used to manual shifting, I could have better control of the car in the corners.
    8:20 I can get behind that. Basically, any attempt to countersteer results in upsetting the car's balance and eventually spinning out.
    8:52 The CR-X is definitely the best starter car in this game. It has some decent power and is dirt cheap compared to the other two (206 would leave you grinding a lot for parts to become competitive, while the Beetle is just overpriced).
    10:01 This is one thing (probably of a few) which Juiced did better than Forza - it has the side skirts for the CR-X! Also, the diversity of spoilers is definitely something Forza should learn from Juiced (Okay, Gran Turismo might give much more freedom of customization, but still).
    11:05 The livery system was pretty simplistic at the time (just like Most Wanted allowed only a single layer at a time), but the manufacturer decals was something Juiced nailed. Too bad the placement was locked only to a single layout, but it still looked decent.
    11:41 I can't agree with you on this one. The ride height plays a huge role in how the car handles bumps and pavements. Slam the car too low and you'll be stopped by any curb and spin out after hitting the slightest bump in the road.
    11:57 It's worth mentioning that not all parts affect the hp (obviously, it would be awkward to see a car gain 10 bhp from new suspension or brakes), which makes building stock class prototypes easy and fun 😊
    12:24 That's another cool feature in the career mode as the crew livery is fitted automatically to the car without the need to browse the same stuff all over or make manual adjustments just to give a consistent look.
    13:07 I absolutely agree, the soundtrack in Juiced is filled to the brim with bangers, rivalling the AAA titles of its time. I even listen to some of these tracks when I drive around in The Crew 2.
    14:38 I think the calendar was a clever compensation for the lack of free roam.
    17:07 The betting system was awesome, but it's a shame a single bet was capped at 500k. Obviously, people found an exploit which would make one millions in a few minutes using this system (I won't get into detail here, google it yourselves). As for losing bets or pinks, a workaround also has been found (just gotta know where the saves are located, the rest is pretty straightforward).
    19:48 Completing the Career mode due to its non-linearity can surely take from 2-3 hours if you're speedrunning to maybe even a few years if you're not in a hurry 😂
    22:47 There is a simple and rather stress-free method to improve your crew members - just send them to do sprints (drag races). Despite going mainly in a straight line, the overall experience ends up more rewarding than letting them do circuit races, messing up big time and damaging some of the rivals' cars. One frustrating thing about racing with crewmates is that you can't control their aggression once you cross the finish line, which forces you to let them past to make sure they make it safely to the end.
    23:39 I'm so glad Juice Games chose not to implement rubberbanding. This gives a more authentic feeling to the races.
    25:29 Sure, there are challenges that can be done with stock cars (sometimes it's even better if it's stock or close to stock) but The Wild Cats' Speed Challenge definitely isn't one of them. I remember to this day the struggle of keeping my class 6 Supra above 140 mph on the oval while dealing with the constant reminder to drive faster 😫
    28:01 There's a way to avoid losing the car in a pink slip race without any penalties to the respect. You just need to know at which menu to quit.
    28:11 I totally agree, especially when the race on the next day in the calendar is something you don't want to miss out on (like a sponsored event) but a rival offers a pink slip race. This is a lose-lose situation where you lose either reputation for turning down the pink slip race or the chance to win a prototype part should you accept the offer.
    28:57 I think showoff events are more common in the early stages of Career and it's really worth doing them. Obviously, since every time you enter the minimum score increases, it's for the best if you bank a lot of points early on to get massive amounts of respect from Vixens
    29:54 I can't say I agree with you on this one. Sticking to one trick the whole time would eventually punish you as the spectators grow more and more bored. Therefore, it's worth learning all those skills and pulling off Bonus Moves to boost the multiplier even faster and avoid losing points instead of gaining them. The best choice for Showoff events would be a powerful FWD car as they can do pretty much everything (try pulling off a J-turn or a boomerang in a RWD, or a donut in a 4WD).
    32:40 You know, stories have a thing that kind of limits player's freedom - linearity. In case of Juiced, the lack of a well-developed plot allows you to progress at your own pace and gives sense and purpose to the calendar.
    34:11 The endgame certainly is something AAA titles even from recent years should've learned from Juiced. Going full sandbox is a huge YES from me. As for the Extreme Nitrous Arcade series, as the name suggests, there is an added challenge of the stuck NOS valve, activating whenever you step on the throttle. Also, completing all Arcade series unlocks prototype mods for all cars in Custom Race, which is awesome (meanwhile, unlocking Junkman parts for My Cars in NFSMW is so easy it's boring).
    I don't know if you didn't mind or simply forgot to mention it, but the default controls are pretty awkward (like, who in the right mind shifts with square bracket keys or, when playing with automatic gearbox, reverses using End, or pulls the handbrake with B while looking back with Space? And what's with a separate control mapping window where you assign an action to a key rather than vice versa? Not gonna lie, Juice Games had some crazy ideas 🥴)
    All in all, Juiced had an impressive potential but at the time of release it was heavily underappreciated. Nowadays though, it certainly has become a cult classic (at least to those who played it) which deserves just as much love as the Black Box NFS games, Midnight Club 3, SRS and the like.
    Of course, I'd love to see you cover Juiced 2 as well.

    32:50 I actually had no idea there was a way to do that or that there was any end game screen. I was late to this game and started playing it on PS2 back in 2019 out of curiosity. I loved the soundtrack, cars, and structure of the game. But once I bought my favorite cars (mostly muscle and RWD cars) , upgrades and raced most of regions in the city I thought I was done lol. Now I gotta go back just to earn the ability to Not lose respect in races 😤

    I was 11 when this came out. I remember reading about this mysterious street racing game in Xbox magazine with cel-shaded graphics. (It did at the time of the preview screenshots). I played the demo on that month's disk and I remember being impressed, then it completely disappeared for at least two years and we heard nothing. Juice Games was in a building about a mile away from where my house was, so it felt great to finally get my hands on it even with THQ on the cover as it was a game developed in my hometown. I feel lucky to have grown up around all of this culture. TF&TF in 2001 with that bright green Eclipse, the brown R34 GTR on the cover of NFS: Underground. Watching bootlegs of Video Option, that Signal Auto R34 video from Japan, that video where two guys showed up to a dealer on a weeknight and filmed themselves "testing" a then-new Mustang SVT "Terminator" convertible which introduced my 12 year old British brain to the sounds of supercharged 4.6 modulars. I used to be constantly scrolling our local Japanese import dealer because they had R33 GTS-Ts for £3k, which I *could definitely afford once I turned 16*. Excellent era.

    Every time I play Juiced I get taken back by how unique the car selection is. Only Underground 2 had a Corsa and the fact that the game had Aussie cars like the Holden Monaro and the Falcon. The selection of low end hatches that you'd totally expect people to tune up and take racing is really nice to see, underground would have a couple before moving into the Japanese imports, Juiced really highlights the breadth of the scene.

    I remember playing Juiced 2 Hot Import Nights back in highschool, albeit the PSP version of the game and for what it was it was pretty fun tbh. The betting and Pinkslip modes were a cool addition yet when playing you have to be quite careful of your opponents, especially in Pinkslips one mistake and you lose your car although you could always have the chance to get it back by doing those same type of races.
    It's a shame that we don't have those type of game modes in today's racing games.

    Best things about it for me was the handling, sense of speed and betting. Especially how the cars actually feel... to this date, no other game has been able to replicate the feeling of rubber chewing up the tarmac as u drive around a bend and floor it out of that corner, obviously its still arcadey but feelw good.... its hard to explain just have to experience it.
    This game is one of my time greats💯

    I've played Juiced so much it should be criminal. To the point where I understood all the cars ups and downs to a T. When I saw you bet on Jack's supra a part of me died 😂 Then the very next clip you are neck to neck with a 22b which besides the viper is in it's own class basically. That car is a demon in juiced. This game to me was never a perfect game but it really captured something a lot of racing games didn't of the time like the watch/crew races where you only had to spectate. The game had a surprising amount of content for the time. Whilst the handling could definitely be punishing it felt really good compared to other street racing games of the time. Thank you for this video though I didn't know I needed this

    • @TeaKanji
      @TeaKanji ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Seems like you know your stuff. What's your top picks for classes 8 and 7? I'm quite enjoying the Clio for its on-rails handling, and the Corolla seems to put in some fast lap times despite its low top speed, but I'm still only scratching the surface of this game. For class 7 I assume it's 22B, bugeye Impreza and Evo VI all the way.

    • @trentdd15
      @trentdd15 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TeaKanji I actually did some retesting after I made that comment because class 8 specifically is a weird one. From Class 7 to 4 AWD Subi's and Evo's dominate. I used to think cars like the 3000gt and eclipse were up there but honestly they get walked by a subie or evo. From my research the dodge dart/punto had the best acceleration off the line in class 8 but you can also detune a mr2 to class 8 and it'll have a slightly higher top speed but mid acceleration lol. 02 Type R integra, celica, and civic are all pretty close runner ups in class 8 though. Also I discovered for class 7+ the bug eye actually beats the 22b in top speed but both cars are almost identical. Don't expect a whole lot of variance in class 8 just cause it's all FWD cars with like one or two possible RWD cars which is hardly an upgrade in this game. Neon hits 138 at the top speed usually where the top speed is the mr2 at 140 in class 8. So I'd take bets on the neon all day. Once you get used to knowing which cars have the best acceleration they are typically gonna be the problem.

    I had this game and played the hell out of it. The twitchy rwd car mechanics and lack of transmission upgrades were serious drawbacks. I did find a way of getting past losing money in the betting system. If I remember it correctly, you saved the game, pulled out the memory card and if you won the bet you popped the card back in and saved. If you lost you just reload from before the loss.
